Stunning meal to celebrate a birthday, couldn't fault anything, am even sure the staff served us with a smile from behind their masks! This has to be the best restaurant in Hanmer Springs...the photo is of their awesome Venison

A lovely evening with beautifully arranged dishes. Seared scallops and a side of seasonal vegetables is a tasty option for a light main. The eye fillet was delicious and perfectly cooked and presented. I can recommend the liquorice sticky pudding for dessert. Wonderful, balanced sweetness. The staff were great. Friendly, personable and relaxed. Wonderful ambience and setting. Am looking forward to dining here again on our next visit.

Nice place to grab a meal when in Hanmer. The staff were very friendly throughout and were happy to have a little chat as opposed to just delivering your food. Speaking of, the food was very tasty with good sized portions. I was full so couldn't finish my meal and the owner checked if I didn't like the meal, but it was just that I had no more room! It was nice to see someone making sure that the meal was up to scratch. I can tell they would take any feedback gladly. We dined during covid-19 level two and they were following the correct protocols to keep everyone safe.

Absolutely amazing meal! Have been to Hamner many times but never here. Stopped in on a whim and so lucky to get a table (you really should book). Wonderful service and the food was incredible. I had a wonderful seafood rice dish (almost a risotto) whilst my wife had Lamb Shank. We then had a fantastic Creme Brûlée and Fondant for dessert. I can’t recommend this place enough!

A quiet Monday evening, two of us for dinner. Absolutely fabulous - not too crowded, delicious food, good wine and beer range, service was quick and professional without feeling rushed. The staff were attentive and friendly, the restaurant was adequately lit, there was music playing which we didn't have to shout over to speak. If pressed, I could say that it could have been just a little warmer. Our mains were a good size, my ribeye was cooked perfectly, and the vegetables were cooked but still crisp. The price was also good - 2 drinks, 2 delicious mains and a very nice dessert, $120. Of course, the really big negative is that it's way too far from Christchurch... Our meal was a wonderful end to a very enjoyable day; we will definitely be back.

This place came highly recommended by most so we were really looking forward to trying it out. And good lord it didn't disappoint. The restaurant (building rather) comes steeped in history. The setting is an old villa which has been converted to a cozy restaurant who have won numerous awards for their Beef and Lamb. The entrees as featured below were the Duck Liver Parfait which had bold flavours and was immaculately presented. The second entree was the seared scallops which was served in a luxurious shallot broth which was both light and delicate at the same time. This was perfectly paired with the Terrace Edge Pinot Gris For main we chose the Merino Lamb and the Wild Venison. The Lamb was (yes I'm going to say this) hands down the best tasting Lamb I have ever tasted. It was so beautifully cooked. Delectable and tender with the perfect crunch from the pistachio crumb all balanced off with a perfect jus. The perfect wine pairing for this was the Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir. Unfortunately we were too full to even attempt dessert but don't let that take anything away from the beautiful gastronomic journey that No. 31 provides. One that is definitely from an unexpected place.

Enjoyable meal. I had wild goat entree then pork main. My wife scallops with pork belly then lamb main. Desert was chocolate orange fondant. We both found the pork on the dry side but other than that no complaints. Lamb was devine as was the fondant. Staff were friendly. Will be back.

Hanmer offers limited up market restaurants, a few come and then go over time. "No 31" previously "The Laurels" has been there for many years and has always been a favourite. The competition is by and large pubs, fast food restaurants and takeaways, the current exceptions being the Heritage Hotel and Braemar Lodge both offer a similar level of cuisine and price to 31. To maintain a competitive edge a restaurant needs to consistently reassess itself and maintain a "sparkle" others lack, particularly if it wants top dollar. Number 31 was always our go to place in Hanmer, at least once during each visit. Our last meal there 3 nights ago was, we felt, uninspiring Fish cakes that arrived minus the pickled zuccini advertised on the menu, venison that was just a rather bland stew. Up market restaurants need to "inspire", this didn't. in the past it has. We attempted to give feedback, but this did not appear to be accepted well, "its the same Chef as last time," being the response. A missed opportunity to find the specifics of our dissatisfaction. Please No 31, any feedback, positive or negative, is valuable, especially the negative as it offers a chance to stay ahead of the game, its not a personal attack, embrace it, we want you to be the best but you won't be if customers are disappointed and you don't know why.

Delicious Canterbury 400gm Flintstone Steak, grilled mushrooms with red onion marmalade and topped with steak butter, Terrace Edge Pinot Noir jus. Along with a side of fries and black garlic aioli and tomato chilli jam. Full of yummy flavours and the service was excellent.

Absolutely stellar experience, checked out the reviews before I went and I gotta say, this place checks out. The absolute height of luxury. Had the venison with a tidy glass of Syrah, followed by oysters for dessert, not exactly orthodox, but it was the full kiwi experience. As an aussie living in NZ, I have to say this was my most memorable dinner experience I've had here, topped off by a dash of snow out the window. The waitress - Hannah, is an absolute gem. Her service is impeccable and she is the garnish on the fine ingredients that make this place what it is. Yours truly, Benn.

My husband and I went for dinner and the food was amazing and cooked to perfection! I had the scallops to start and the venison for main and my husband had the mushroom and walnut pate to start and the lamb loin for main. All meals were perfect! So delicious! The restaurant was small but just right for the wait staff to attend to you quickly and for the chef to ensure every meal was perfect. I'd recommend booking in advance when its busy in town. This restaurant is a very nice place for a great meal.

We drove up from Christchurch and wanted somewhere nice with a nice menu. 31 fitted the bill and we booked there for dinner. We were not disappointed. Both meals were tasty and filling, the wine and dessert also good choices. We were served by Kristen who is a STAR. She was very pleasant and made excellent suggestions, perfectly rounding off our evening.

Excellent menu choices with local produce. Great to see wild game on the menu. We had an oysters kilpatrick dish and a spiced wild goat curry to start and then a wild venison main and a pork main. The desserts were fantastic with the creme brulee and the liquorice sticky pudding being a stand out dish! Needless to say, the food was exquisite. The service was warm and friendly and perfectly executed. Lovely atmosphere in an old villa. Can't wait to come back!

Super service from friendly and informed staff who knew their menu well. We shared the lamb shoulder which was superb. The duck fat potatoes were as crispy and fluffy as you could wish for. The breads to start could have done with another pottle of something to dip in but were still pretty darn delicious. Try the rose cocktail! It's a stunner.

During our recent stay in Hanmer Springs we had the pleasure of dining at No, 31 on two occasions. We could not rate higher our experience, the food was delicious the service superior. The entrees were innovative ( we especially enjoyed the Duck Liver Pate and the Scallops) and on a beautiful summer’s evening we could not go past the Salmon for our mains. The wine menu had a good and well priced selection of local wines which we enjoyed sampling. We would not hesitate to recommend this wonderful restaurant. Thank you No.31 we will be back.

Amazing resturaunt for our group of friends traveling around the south island from Auckland. Absolutely loved the experience, super nice owner. Well refined dishes. Sorry to the young kiwi waitress I called an Aussie. Also please someone get the head chef a proper grill so he can serve much better steaks than he/she already does.

Food was really nice. Service from the staff was very good. Would have given 5 stars but the manager was very rude to her staff, which was an unpleasant way to end our night. The staff member made a simple mistake on the till, no big deal but the manager was incredibly impatient with her. I would recommend this manager had some training in people skills and being civil.

Just heading into winter, we came in early for dinner. It was quiet, warm and the staff serving us were delightful. I had the duck and my partner the pork. The meat was soft the veges not overcooked, the cocktails beautiful and the best creme brulee ive had in a long time! would highly recommend!

Thanks to Jan a local at liquor land who recommended this place to eat dinner. If you want something nice to eat, this is the place in Hamner Springs. Menu is nice and short for those who take their time narrowing the list down. I booked ahead in the early arvo I suggest to do so. I had the starter of the scallops on saffron risotto was my fave of the night. My main, recommended by our friendly waiter who was also full of good recommendations of places to go after, was the confit duck, sauce slightly to sweet for my liking but was still good. Partner had the Angus fillet which was mouth watering had a beautiful smoked flavour. The pork and venison was also ordered at our table which looked amazing. A+ for presentation 😃 would deff come back. Expect the bill to be about $300 for 4 people and drinks.

I first ordered beer and waited for the main NZ LAMB RACK. The ribbed meat has an impact on the appearance and is delicious, The knife was not easy to use and I was having a hard time. However, when the waitress called out, "It's delicious, but it's a little difficult to use this knife. He immediately brought me another knife. The wines were also substantial, and the dessert wine at the end had a very elegant sweetness, which was a good memory. The waitress's concern was warm and it was a pleasant time.
