I’m a big foodie and have eaten at a great many restaurants and takeouts across New Zealand. Forbidden City is a class above and undoubtedly my favourite. I’ve dined at restaurant numerous times and every single time the food is insanely delicious. The dumplings, dim sum, wontons, fried noodles, sweet and sour fish, salt and pepper squid, braised eggplant - every dish at this restaurant is amazingly tasteful and something I crave daily. If you’re looking for authentic and absolutely delicious Chinese cuisine - make sure you check this gem out!

Ordered 4 or 5 takeaway dishes from this restaurant recently -they let me know the food might take a few minutes to prepare but despite the fact that they were incredibly busy, it was ready pretty quick. All of the dishes were still piping hot when we got them home and the food was absolutely delicious, best Chinese I have had in ages. Also good value for money. Have already recommended to a few friends and we will definitely be back :)

Decent place. Plus halal. Food was tasty. Some dishes were expensive but the. This is nz.. Certainly recommended..

Never disappointed with my meal and the very prompt service! Prices good for the portion sizes as well! The black pepper beef is my favourite😋

The eggplant dish and the double cooked lamb were just amazing! The fish was humongous. Very speedy service, but it felt like the people serving were not interested in serving. But the food made up for it. To my surprise, they are one of the few good Halal certified restaurants.

Quaint traditional Chinese restaurant. A cosy warm environment with decent food and friendly efficient service. The Peking Duck is very generous in size along with all the bells and whistles that come with it. A worthwhile visit.

Clean and delicious, huge portions and very good quality, we got our order pretty quick and freshly. Over all flawless experience, absolutely recommended and will definitely go there again.

Many impressive points. Very fast service, food prepared lightning fast, meal a massive portion, delicious and a very affordable price. They were happy to modify my meal to make it vegan friendly. Excited to try out more from Forbidden City.

Peking duck recommended. I personally don’t like eggplant my friend ordered a dish it was eggplant at first I thought it was mushroom and I love mushroom but then later on they told me it was eggplant. I was surprised because this is the first time that I am liking a dish with eggplant in it. It was amazing. I love the sauce and everything. Def should try it.

Food was a little overdone, customer service a tad bit wanting, but good dining space and potential for improvement.

I went here in lunchtime, there is a lunch menu for little bit cheaper price. But mapa-topu was salty and not tasty. Chicken was little bit better.

A very nice authentic Chinese restaurant. Very close to the Queensgate shopping mall.Can get busy around 6pm so would suggest reserving a table before you go.

If you come to this restaurant on weekends it's almost impossible to get a table, Advance booking is recommended.by the way ，All kinds of practices of lamb and fish are our favorites

A good Chinese restaurant in Lower Hutt Queens Street. Soups, meat, seafoods and vege. Noodles and rice. Share dishes would be good to eat variety dishes. Generouse portion. Any left over ask a doggy bag.

My family and I absolutely love this place, we have discovered some new favorites and always come here when we can. The food is the main point, it's just fabulous. The service is great, they always serve an appetizer but you don't have to wait long anyway. Highly recommend this place, but don't come too late or it'll be full!

One of the few halal places. Very nice Asian food. Saw quiet a few non muslim Asians comibg to this place too. Tip: book before showing up. If there is no space the owner will just let u know. Very fast service.

Best food. This is a regular for my husband and I and my family. Braised egg plant best by far and salt & pepper deep fry tofu my favourite two dishes, fried beans, veg dishes, perking duck my family favourite too, it's time to try something new. Must ask them next time any suggestions?

Amazing food!! I have been looking for a Chinese halal shop for a very long time in Wellington ! So happy to have found this place. The food is really delicious. The service is very fast too.

Forbidden city is a child friendly restaurant. I've been there many times in the last 5 years. Ive taken my toddler there . Its hallal too so my Muslim friend could dine. The food prices are really good for quantity, it can feed a large family. Really tasty authentic food.

What a delicious and beautiful blue cod fish dish! The fish body is slit into cubes and deep fried in a way that makes it mushroom up into what might be mistaken for many shrimp attached to a fishtail. It is covered in a sweet and slightly sour sauce. The eggplant dish is so tasty and the fried silken tofu is softened in a light sauce and is divine. The duck is perfectly cooked and I have never had a better fried lamb rack. The restaurant is Hallal as well, and has many vegetarian dishes, so our table of mixed cultures was fully satisfied. Sorry I was too busy eating and forgot to take a photo. Besides, the food comes out at different times, the minute it is ready. Service is quick here, but they didn't mind us taking our time.

very yummy. their ho fun is scrumptious. very good prices. service is good. I waited about 10 mins for food. This place is usually packed in the weekend, so yeah probably best to book for weekend or go during the weekdays.

This is simply one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Wellington area, in terms of authenticity. Love their complementary preserved vegetables - they're delicious. I've been there half a dozen times already and don't remember one dish that wasn't up to standard.

Delicious food. Awful service. The young girl there is uninterested and unprofessional. At least the food is very nice. Was going to be zero stars due to poor service, but the good is so very delicious I must give higher score. Popular place with Beijing locals and Embassy staff. Please make the service better then I will consider five stars.

Went here with my family, we are Muslim and here we can eat halal dimsum and many more. We ordered steamed siumay and fried wonton (dimsum), hotplate blackpapper, fried rice, noodles, and stir fry green beans, and all were EXCELLENT. Large selection of food, and all looks yummy yummy, I drolled even to think about how it tastes like. Staffs friendly too. Too bad I forgot to take pictures, but absolutely coming back for witnessing some more delicious food.

Service is good, staff are friendly. Food is execlent, some of the best northern chinese I've had out side of China. Double cooked lamb ribs and the beef pancake are a must try.

The food here is fantastic! Especially the peppered lamb on the hotplate and the meat pancakes, delicious. We ordered so much food for eight people including starters and the bill was under $200.

Really nice food!!! We (group of 6) ordered 6 dishes - the hand made noodle was huge and amazing, spicy chicken was really yummy if u like spicy, beef strips with peta was really good too, but the fish wasn't very fresh.

Really delicious food here! You probably wouldn't come for the atmosphere, but the food is tasty as heck and they do continuous tea refills.. they don't serve pork. I tried the lemon fish, black bean beef, bok choy with garlic and duck, all were delish! this is the kinda place you wanna order a variety and share.

One of my favourite halal resteraunts, yes owned by chinese muslims. Its very very rare to find halal chinese food, and me being half chinese am always very happy when i eat here. The food is absolutely delicious, and the owners are super friendly. Price is expensive though, but it is indeed worth it.

We were in a hurry and ordered salted chicken along with a beef and mushrooms dish. Both arrived within 5 minutes of ordering. And both dishes were so vert tasty.

First time here, great tasting food. Had the duck and it was good. Had a variety of food and thought they were all yummy and tasty. Will definitely be coming back.

Went there on a wet day. Staff given us soup first to warm us up. Food was ready in minutes. Delicious source and quite spacious. Staff were friendly. Price was reasonable.

Doesn't sell alcohol. Service was quick. Meal was best ever. If you have enough people they can also offer lazy Susan dining. Also available as takeaway.

Best part of my meal, Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Lemon Chicken was too sweet and not the best actually. Service was ridiculous and unprofessional.
