The best Mexican restaurant in Wellington area. Food Fresh and tasty and great service. I didn't manage to take photos of the flautas (really a pleasure, that mixture of flavors and textures are a delight to the palate) This place never stops surprising me, the drinks were delicious. I attach photos of the tacos de nopal (they are vegetarian) and the taste of the nopal is fresh and intense, pisco sour and 3 leches.

Margaritas were delicious as was the food and the desserts … just yummy … we had tres leche & pie de limón (the small size was more than enough for one I had to take half home). Staff are friendly, service was very fast I think we were in and out within and hour!

Great tasting food, very mild levels of spice. Had a range of different styles as well, variety is always appreciated. I ordered the ground beef but it looked and tasted like pulled pork. No issue here, I enjoy both but it might be for others. Not specifically a restaurant issue but after trying several times on two different nights I couldn't get a car park anywhere near and had to go back to my motel and order via Uber Eats.

Absolutely delicious food & fantastic staff who know their stuff & are friendly & professional. You have a choice of the size of your meal and they are substantial anyway. The quesadilla was scrumptious, tender, marinated chicken sandwiched between 2 tortillas with cheese & served with salsa that was full of authentic flavours, yummy pickled onions & salad. Will definitely return!

We ordered enchiladas suizas, tacos cachete, tacos hongos, and a margarita grande while waiting for the takeout. The food and drinks were delicious and definitely authentic Mexican. I was also surprised that the food tasted fresh hours later when we got home. The ambience and staff were incredibly welcoming.

True traditional Mexican cuisine in the culinary heart of Petone. Their 'Carne Asada' defies description, you have not lived until you have tried it. The exquisite food, and the incredibly warm and welcoming staff combine to produce an ultimately comfortable dining experience.

Divine! I love Mexican food and miss it terribly, so I was so excited to notice this place while in Petone. I immediately planned a birthday trip and wasn't disappointed. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is so tasty! It's cozy and the Day of the Dead decor suits. Get a pitcher of Margaritas (I'd suggest on the rocks) - great value and perfect for 2. The desserts fly out, but we only tried the flan- heavenly!

Amazing authentic Mexican food, plus the atmosphere is incredible. The meals here are so tasty and remind me so much of meals I had on my honeymoon in Mexico. I was honestly impressed and really enjoyed my meal.

This is the first Mexican restaurant I've been to where the food tasted AUTHENTIC (I'm married to a Mexican who is a great cook.) The menu was varied and not overpriced, and there was a gluten-free and dairy-free option (tacos) which I really enjoyed. The people I went with loved their meals, too. The service was friendly and helpful, the ambiance was cool and the music was perfect. If there was a dessert option that was gluten-free, dairy-free and refined-sugar-free I'd have given them FIVE stars. Can't wait to take the rest of my family there.

I love this place. Excellent restaurant, delicious food, amazing Mexican decorations and pictures, even the toilets look gorgeous, super friendly staff. Lots of on-street parking.

Also known as Cantina it is a burst of colours and Mexican flavours on Jackson St. The menu is varied and suits most palettes. Many items are not spicy unless you specify some heat. There is a lot of cheese which makes dinner very filling. In saying this, it is worth getting dessert, even if it is to take away. The bar is extensive and stocks at least 10 brands of tequila. They have a good menu of non-alcoholic drinks and the Mexican Chilli Lemonade is particularly enjoyable. It has quite a kick. Service is a bit slow yet they are friendly and very helpful in describing the Spanish worded menu items. Worth coming back, just allow longer time frames.

Easily the best Mexican restaurant by far in the Wellington region. My wife and I go here once a week and it's the closest we've come to going to Mexican restaurants in LA, California. I recommend the chilli lemonade to drink and the Huarache Patria de Milanesa for the main with Tres Leches to finish it off for dessert. The staff are really friendly and we always feel well looked after here. 10/10

The restaurant was packed midweek - sign of a popular place. I was expecting some sharpness from the lime in my margarita but it was a tad sweet for my liking. The jalapeno poppers were very mild and lacked any real flavours. The guacamole was punchy and we loved it. My vegetarian enchiladas were excellent albeit the portions a bit scanty for the price. Overall a good vibe with good food.

Good. Really good. My Family enjoyed the atmosphere. Seems authentic. I had a chorizo quesadilla. Everyone voted it the best choice. Ok. Maybe the chicken was the best. Anyway it was all good. Dessert was a churro with icecream. Consensus was that if we had nothing else we should at least have the churros. Try the chilli lemonade. Oh and make a reservation just in case. The place was packed when we got there (a Saturday) and we were lucky to get a table.

If I could give this place more stars I would. The food is simply divine, amazing, authentic. Great service, friendly staff, and everything is delicious. I can’t wait to go back and have an even bigger feed. Come hungry and you won’t be disappointed. I also loved their vegetarian options, jackfruit taco and the cactus was AMAZING. Would be 5 stars as their food is very authentic and their pisco sours are sublime but a while back we had a bad interchange when we turned up for our booking and they turned us away saying we must have booked at Mexico across the street and that still hurts.

We had an exceptional lunch at the friendly Viva Mexico in Petone Wellington. I had a fish dish slow cooked with tomato ,capers and olives it was so tasty, my partner had pulled pork with corn tortillas, salad, rice and beans, was also very tasty. The premises was activley been cleaned and toilets also very clean also. I would highly recommend this restaurant for its food, staff, atmosphere, and cleanliness.

We were visiting from San Diego, California where we get a lot of good Mexican food. We loved our meal at Viva Mexico, it was nice to find great Mexican food so far from home. The service was wonderful too. They were very nice employees. If you want the real authentic Mexican food this is a great restaurant.

Brilliant atmosphere, the place is decked out perfectly with a real Mexican feel. The wait staff are on point and very happy to help. Its best to book ahead for weekend or public holidays as this place fills up fast which is not surprising as the meals are divine! If you are not sure what to have, ask and they are great at helping you through the menu to find something you like. Will be back again soon! Oh and if you can't dine in they will do take aways.

Viva Mexico has long been the most authentic Mexican restaurant in Wellington. Forget the typical nachos or burritos that you may be used to from the franchise restaurants, the food here is unique, fresh and delicious. Excellent atmosphere, excellent drinks menu, and friendly service

Oh my god. I dont believe how amazing the fish tacos are. Its insane. I couldn't stop eating it. How have i never been here before. Absolutely loved everything on my plate. Definitely going here again. Wish I took pics of it, but I was too hungry.

This restaurant has a very nice decor. Outside seating is available and staff are very friendly. I tried the pickled cactus tacos which were very nice. Portions are quite small so 5 tacos or something of a similar quantity would be a good size to order for a meal.

This was the first time I had eaten Mexican food it was well presented the flavors complemented each other it was not too spicy. Compliments to the chef and entire team. The atmosphere was so calming with the Mexican music staff very friendly I would recomend the Viva Mexico to family friends and staff.

Not up to standard reflected in reviews or of previous visits. Three of has had enchiladas that had obviously been sitting under a grill for 10-15 minutes too long and were a dry black mass that was hard to cut and pry off plate. Chips and dip, tacos and desert were fine. Waiting staff were friendly but not attentive and quick to grab part finished drinks/food so they could get away. The restaurant is quite large with only one heater evident so it was cold and draughty. Also there was a large protruding wine display made from a pallet mounted on the wall above our table and one of our guests banged his head hard standing up- Get rid of it!!!! Prices are reasonable but we wouldn’t go back based on this experience. 3 stars is generous and yes it was Viva Mexico

We stopped here for lunch on ANZAC day and boy what a great place we ended up picking. I had the Quesadillas suizas (chicken in a wrap with cheese, green salsa and black beans) and it was exquisite! I couldn't believe how good the flavour profile was. The chicken was soft but not mushy, and delicately flavoured. The wrap was soft and chewy, but not tough. You could cut it with your fork. The green salsa had a great sourness to it which cuts through the creaminess of the chicken and the fatiness of the cheese. There's a slight spiciness in the salsa which was well rounded and delicious. The black beans were flavoured just enough to be not bland on its own, cooked to be soft but still retained enough firmness which gave good texture. Together paired with the quesadilla it gave the right balance in flavour richness, and evened out the spicy in the salsa. I loved it. The pickles onions were a welcome palate cleanser for everything else on the plate (and didn't have the overpowering flavour raw onion has and that, I hate! Bonus points for me) and the astringency of it added a great depth of flavour. My friends had Tamales de rajas and Pescado a la veracruzana which were also amazing. The tamales ended up being the spiciest out of the 3 dishes we had and the corn dough was very filling. The fish and sauce/condiment paired well with the chilli rice. In my opinon all 3 dishes had a wonderful flavour profile and I will definitely come back again next time I'm visiting Wellington. The service was good, the staff was attentive although it did take about 30 mins for food to be served after ordering - unsure if it was because there was less staff rostered for a public holiday; since the restaurant wasn't very busy when we were there. They also have a great music playlist. tl;dr - best Mexican food I've had to date, extra yummy, would come back again.

Nice quiet atmosphere for a Tuesday lunch. Place looks great, vibrant colours and mexican theme. Staff welcomed us and pointed us to a table quickly and were friendly. The food and drinks came out fairly quickly. We had nachos and beef quesidillas both were fresh and tasty but lacked any heat/spice. Was expecting there to be some spice so was a little disappointed. Also no condiments either, would have been great to be able to add some chilly sauce, chipotle etc. So overall was good but not quite great.

A friendly greeting of ‘hola’ as you enter this very colourful restaurant.The decor transports you back to Mexico, with cushions depicting Mexico’s famous artist Frida Kahlo scattered throughout.You have the option of Alfresco dining in warmer weather. Struggling with my Spanish I managed to order Chilaquiles and I was not disappointed-very nice.By the way the staff do speak English. If cocktails are your thing they offer these too.
