Z.Food was amazing and incredible venue with great indoor and outdoor seating options. Steak and Southern fried Chicken couldn't be faulted! Will be back for sure!
S.Have good selection of drinks and munchies food. Best when outside and band playing. Inside is dated and has the usual beer on the floor smell (not overwhelming - just typical public bar). Friendly staff. Saturday morning the place hums with the local market happening.
M.Best Laska I've ever had (though not cheap). Seafood was very fresh. Nice seating inside and out. Good service.
K.Great service and even better food. All the meals including the share plates were very generous servings. Everything was cooked to perfection and great flavours. The ribs could have been a bit more saucy but still delicious nonetheless.
D.Lovely location, old wooden weatherboard Victorian or colonial style building. Very prompt and efficient service. I noticed a large outdoor area with a stage for bands. Definitely going back to hear a band when they have a gig going.

x.My partner and I came here for dinner. Super looking place with great service. The team were well versed in attending to us and light chit chat during us ordering / through the meal to make sure we were happy. Drinks came to our table very quickly. Dinner took a little longer but we came at a busy time. If you’re into social distancing - this team is doing a great job spacing tables out, checking vaccine passes and ensuring that masks are being worn.
The meals were delicious and of a good portion size. We had the prawn tacos, Malaysian curry (curry of the day) and some jalapeño poppers (totally worth it). Flavours were well balanced.
We will definitely be going back. Thanks team for a delightful meal.
S.Great spot, if you can sit outside. Food is pretty good, particularly from the sharing plates menu, although the ribs from the other menu were scrumptious. Overall, would come again, especially when there is live music.
Recommend booking during the busy season as you definitely want a table outside. Inside is dark and trab and no effort had been put into making it nice.
M.I went there for lunch and ordered the pork belly bites and a green salad, everything would have been fine except the skin on the pork belly should be crisp and crunchy like crackling,but it was more like rubber and the bites were swimming in a watery sauce, which is not what you expect when you order pork belly,it should be on its own. I wouldn't say it was a disaster but for the fact they got the most important and essential aspect of the whole dish wrong.I would still recommend this pub though for the location and the service which is excellent.

J.Was very busy today, but service was quite quick, but then we only had a glass of wine and some polenta fries...which were very yummy. Will definitely be going back. Its such a nice place with a great view and nice atmosphere

T.Attended the local Saturday Markets situated at the Tavern and stopped in for a quick beer. I guess it depends what experience you are after. The building and location are beautiful but if you are after that pub with its locals and atmosphere you may not experience this
F.Very good food, reasonable price, beautiful location, however 4, I repeat FOUR consecutive times that I went to dinner there, the bill to pay came with the wrong amount. Detail... the value was always higher, the mistake was never the account being cheaper.
R.We walked 5km there and back so expectations were high. Blown away actually. Informal, friendly atmosphere with personal service. We both had one of their curries. Fresh and tasty as. The wine list was also excellent, enjoying the local, unoaked Chardonnay. Highly recommended.

B.Great Place, Great Staff and Magic Food. The Team are working hard and doing their very upmost to ensure everyone gets a table during these trying times.. (thanks covid you D....) They have very much stepped up to the challenge, and even though flat-out on managing bookings and ensuring adherence to Red (aka STOP LIGHT) conditions.. are very sad in turning people away, they remain up beat and continue to deliver the flavors from the kitchen and not to forget something chilled to wash it down with. J.We went to the market in the tavern and although it was very small it was very cozy. I would have loved to see a Latin store but it is not always possible. Very welcoming and nice people.

S.Six of us enjoyed dinner here on Friday night and were pleasantly surprised. Big menu with lots of interesting options! Stand outs were the Hawker Roll and Beef Burger with Smokey cheese. Great drinks list as well. Recommend to all who are looking for a tasty meal in a lovely pub setting!

N.I'm gonna leave the great Tav 5 stars cos we've had many a great night here. Food has improved heaps over the years and service is as good as you can expect in a small town. They've got a broad menu and honestly as good as any pub you'll find in a big centre.
I did have to laugh tonight though cos one (very young) waitress was particularly terrible. Brought drinks and didn't clear drinks, dropped food off at wrong table without explanation. Just to be clear I'm not mad and I don't find this a reflection on the establishment... Just a funny note about what can happen in hospo 😂

P.Stopped here today for a light snack and beer. Staff were great, cheerful nd friendly. Ordered Polenta chips and Jalapeno poppers. Both were delicious. Loved the jalapeno Poppers, hot and spicy. Highly recommend stopping here.
T.I parked across the road for 30 minutes. Pizza smelled good. I don't know why google wants me to review you.
3 stars for making my mouth water. Minus 2 stars because you didn't offer to bring a slice out to me in the car.

R.A pleasant place to both drink and dine. Those who know the history will be aware of a change. Probably about two years ago there was a change to the operational and interior aspects of the tavern. It changed from a younger adults place of entertainment, to a family orientated place to enjoy. Changes are made to the food menu for Summer and Winter. For those interested there are some good photos of the historic tavern to look at. Outside there is a beer garden with views of the foreshore and upper harbour. Memorable!
D.At the time when we were there, there were around 100 people at the Mangawhai Tavern, so we couldn't enter the premises.
R.Great atmosphere, great food and service. We have the best waitress Aaliyah who managed our children amazingly, the fifth star was all Aaliyah. We will go back just for the service.

l.We always go at least once while we are staying up there. We normally sit outside as we have a small dog. Great food good staff.

S.Steak was very nicely cooked but if you're used to authentic Japanese and Malaysian cooking then don't order the karaage chicken and fish Laksa. They looked ok but taste so wrong on many levels. My recommendation: go with the safer options when you are in a country pub.

G.The mangawhai tavern has gone through a face-lift in the last few years and has benefitted tremendously from it. It has been a venue for music for as long as I can remember and continues to have great bands performing. The food is decent but the highlight is to sit outside and enjoy the views over the estuary.

D.We went to the restaurant before quizz night. I ordered a chicken "salad". I assumed this would have the usual salad ingredients. Unfortunately that was not the case. It was all slaw, which I am unable to eat. I picked the chicken out and mentioned to the server that they may want to change their menu to reflect what the meal actually was.
Imagine our surprise when we paid the bill and found we had not been charged. We didn't ask for that but it was offered, and cheerfully.
Great service. My husband had the tagine which he said was wonderful so we will definitely return. Thanks to all the lovely staff who made it a very pleasant evening and went out of their way to be helpful.

E.I like the venue. Location, especially for a ride on the bike is excellent. Please make it smoke free even outside, the man next to us smoking really affected the enjoyment of our meal. My prawns was very garlicky which I liked. My partners meal wasn't very good. Had the fish & chips which he got me to try and it didn't taste quite right. He was really sick later that night. Not so good. Hope it was just a coincidence. Would come again just for the location.
M.We had an amazing dinner and a beautiful dessert. The service was fast and the staff did everything they could to help you. The did not skimp on any of the food and it was cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend this place.

F.While this venue is certainly stepping out of its farm-pub past with finer dining and a lick of paint... it still doesn't offer a soy milk alternative in coffee and the menu is rather meat-heavy. The new markets could have been timed better so as not to clash with the original down the road at the local hall but a wide range of vendors have been serving massive crowds. Great for watching touring bands... if the weather's right.

A.Such a fantastic venue during our holiday, a real surprise and delight - as you go from cosy classic NZ Pub vibe and walk out into a massive open social space. Here you'll be sitting at large picnic tables right on the estuary, enjoying amazing delicious food and ice cold pints.. or bubbles.. and if you have kids, they'll love hooning around in that big space too. They even have live music playing in the evening. Whatever your vibe, Mangawhai tavern caters for all in the best way. Absolutely will be back there again!
B.Awesome experience guys, you were obviously packed out being peak time on a Friday in January, but all staff were friendly and made sure we were having a great time. big thanks to Chris and the Pizza Chef who went out the way for my new age lactose intolerant girlfriend. Things like that really make a families night. Atmosphere perfect, music was not to loud.
Pizzas was 5 Star, Service was 5+ Star, Atmosphere 5 Star.
Mains 4 Star. There was a bit of a wait for them also, but everything else made us not care.

M.Had a good lunch there, on a bus trip, about 25 of us, and they handled it all really well. Nobody had too long to wait, and deserts tea and coffee followed very quickly.

M.Great food, however no water available. Was told to buy a $3 pump bottle because 'I wouldn't trust the tap water'. As far as I'm aware it's a legal requirement to supply free clean drinking water to customers, especially at an eatery.

G.Sorry Mangawhai tavern you let yourself down for the Automatic 80s night paid $35 dollars bar service was terrible only two tills running 25min wait in que and only allowed 2 drinks in little plastic glasses still seemed to pay price of a handle. band was good but you couldn't view it because they were boxed in a marquee inside was closed off with the sides of the marquee even though you had still paid your money. Only 2 minutes notice bar was closing at 11 and not all the people waiting before 11 got served... .rant over great music ......
