Friendly service and a great snacks menu! The food came promptly and was delicious. I recommend the flat bread with caramelized onions. Serving staff also obligingly made me a cup of tea.

After doing the recent Hobbiton trail run, my partner and I were after a good feed and a beer to celebrate. The Merchant did not disappoint. We both had the Fish & Chips and really enjoyed it. I washed mine down with the tap Pilsner. Perfect pairing as far as I was concerned! Add to this the brilliant table service, we were looked after from entry till leaving. Would definitely recommend.

It looks like this restaurant belongs to the Good George chain. Heaps of tap beers and wish I wasn’t driving though to try some. Due to the Covid restrictions, the service didn’t allow our kids to use the crayons, making a bit hard to keep them quiet and behaved. Food took a little while, it was a bit packed, but came in great style, tasty and well served. Supporting the locals ;)

Their loyalty program allows me to earn vouchers through my purchases. Amazing staff. Delicious food. Good George Products. Clean loos. Prompt service and relaxing atmosphere and kid friendly, most of all, our dogs are welcome in their outdoor seating area ... A must for our whanau.

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat on the way through to Rotorua. Had great bar snacks, wings and loaded wedges and a pint. Lovely bar manager, very chatty and informative. Will definitely make the "Merch of Mata2" a regular stop when we're passing through Matamata.

Good place to get a quick meal. Huge portions, not too fancy but delicious. We wished we'd brought along a spare stomach so we could have had the two for one dessert (Tuesday evenings). Great ginger beer too.

Outstanding - service was fabulous, food was simply on point. Rory is an excellent host to represent this establishment; he was extremely friendly and so obliging. The Thursday $20 beer and burger (I had the fish burger) will find me returning. Other floor and bar staff were as friendly and attentive as Rory. For a family/casual dining setting, this place is one of the best hospitality experiences I've had in NZ. Thank you

A pleasure to leave a review. What a huge step up this place is compared to the historical fare available in Matamata. Front of house staff were attentive and friendly and kept an eye on us. The food was top notch. My steak easily in the top 10 streaks ever. Someone there knows how to buy, cure, and cook. Deep flavour, tender meat, awesome. Me family were raving about their food:. The burger, the pizza, the pork falling off the ribs. Topped off with the most chocolatey brownie possible. It almost tasted like pure dark chocolate. We will be back, soon I hope. I also hope they can maintain this standard. Lock it in as part of the business. Would be sad if changes in staff would change the result. In the mean time, run - don't walk - to this place. And order the steak, medium rare - unless you don't respect the meat or the chef ;)

As a newbie to Matamata I have eaten twice here and the service, food and ambiance has been amazing 🤩 Last night we went to the Comedy Show and Meal. The meal was absolutely delicious and was served so promptly despite the Restaurant being full. The show was amazing and we laughed so much. The Comedians were so funny and professional loved it all😂

Drove down from Auckland to visit hobbiton. Stayed the night and went out to dinner here. We received awesome service they even accommodated my daughter's dairy and egg allergy during a busy Saturday nights service! Our waiter with blue pony tail was very accommodating!! Great team work guys! Keep it up Matamata! Great Atmosphere, very chilled modern gastro pub feel!

A great evening out with friends, the lamb shank was very tender and the potato mash and veggies was delicious. Finished off with apple pie and fig ice-cream, which was also yummy. The only small problem was they had a Quiz night, and the gentleman running it was rather loud when speaking on the mic. Made it hard to hear at our table. Definitely will come back again, for good friendly service and good meals.

My wife and I decided to treat ourselves to a late lunch at the Good Merchant -Matamata using our Christmas voucher. Great food ,certainly great coffee, wonderful service made for a very enjoyable experience. Staff were excellent . As well as all of that I was able to keep an eye on the Cricket on the big screen . Matamata is now a bit of a tourist town which has has spurned a number of restaurants /cafes which keeps everyone honest delivering good eating /dining experiences. Our late lunch seemed to confirm just that I am pleased to say.

It was a wonderful location for a family catch-up/birthday celebration after coming out of quarantine. The kitchen menu is surprisingly diverse and although the prices are a little higher than you'd expect for a bar, they're very generous with their portion sizes, so it is definitely worth the value. Facilities are clean, well-maintained, and attractive, with a wide selection of traditional and craft beverages. The staff ate friendly, helpful, and attentive. Parking is available on the street for up to an hour, otherwise you're looking at a short walk to find somewhere without a time limit

Atmosphere was really nice. Had to wait at entrance to get in but staff was super fast to let us in as well as serving. Drinks were really nice food was ok and lady who served us was really friendly and when ordering a drink I didn’t end up liking she was more than happy to take it off the tab. Reasonable pricing too will most likely be coming back again and look forward to it! Just a great place overall.

What a find we were visiting Matamata today.We park right out front of this bar and grill. Lovely service lots of space both inside and out to sit and eat. Can't fault the food and drinks Love the chicken pate beautiful presented fine fine fine
