Despite seemingly inexperienced service people, the food was fantastic, these chefs really know what they're doing. We were served 5 perfect meals and enjoyed 3 gorgeous desserts. Busy for very good reason, just go.

Overall food was very tasty. Service wasn't efficient. We had to wait a while for them to take plates away and we had to ask for drinks and menus from the bar. My drink order didn't come out either (everyone else at our table had theirs) and I had to request it again. Hopefully next time I can have a better experience and this rating may change

What a great place to eat after a walk around Hobbiton! The pizza was perfect - crispy, cheesy, tasty and piping hot. Outdoor seating was lovely and the service was nice and speedy, great mocktail too. Not a cheap and cheerful but worth it.

The restaurant itself had a nice fine-dining experience. However, the pizza didn’t quite meet my expectations and was quite average. The staff were lovely and serviced my partner and I pretty fast. It wasn’t too bad for a first visit and I do plan to visit again in the near future to try what other food that the restaurant has to offer.

The staff were pleasant and the atmosphere was nice, the meals were a bit on the higher budget but were decent, unfortunately our order had not gone through so we ended up waiting a very long time before they realized the error, I think an offer of a complimentary item should of been offered for compensation (but none was) so we just had to wait until our meal was ready .... Overall it was an ok experience, but the error did sully the experience a little

My new favourite restaurant in the country! We were greeted with a smile, the food we ordered arrived quickly, our waitress was so lovely and efficient and best of all the pizza, chips and prawns were delicious! We will be back again for sure!

One of the few nice restaurants in town. Good wine selection, varied liquors, but limited beers (understandable considering this is an "Italian" place). Bartenders put a lot of care on cocktails, excellent mixers. Food is very yummy, but some items may seem overpriced, which may be a result of this being one of a handful "nice" restaurants in the area. I suggest asking your server about portion sizes as these may not be immediately obvious. I ended up ordering an appetizer (scallops) as my main dish, and I'm glad I did because it was filling. Surprise: They were very lightly breaded. Food is more akin to northern Italy (Milan/Florence) than south, so Sicilians beware. Lol We ordered the raspberry cheesecake and it was absolute heaven. Super friendly staff, relaxed environment, outdoor seating available. They also have a side wine bar/lounge. You could say this is an upscale spot but not snobby. Overall, romantic escape in Matamata.

Food was ok. There were so many flies in and out of the restaurant . Maybe the owner should consider using some insect - repellant candles or other remedies to minimize this unpleasant experience.

Nice Italian restaurant. Simple menu, with pizza, pasta and gelato. Good service, not too intrusive, and prompt. Food was delivered quickly and was tasty. The venue has a good selection of indoor and outdoor tables.

Lovely place we stopped at on a bike ride from Papamoa yesterday. Had a very cold Peroni yum, then the Antipasto seafood platter 'recomend if you love lots of choices' 4 star rating the waiter service was poor, he went 2x past our uncleaned table (from the previous sitting I might add) at which point I had to ask him to remove the coffee cups and dirty glasses. We had to order our meal at the bar, to which we were informed the waiter should have taken our order (uhhmmm does he know that?) Anyway it IS still a great place to eat and drink and have a laugh if you have time to stop in Matamata.

Just an osteria on the way back from Rotorua to Auckland. Decided to stop by for some quick lunch. Had a bolognese which was fairly okay, not aldente but more like homecooked overcooked pasta. Having said that, it's actually not bad because sometimes I do crave for university days food and this tasted like one... The prawn with aborio rice turned out to be better than expected. Fresh prawn cutlets, yummy delicious creamy sauce. Ended lunch with a good tiramisu... Other than the waitress who was easily annoyed at us and just impatient at us ordering, everything else was alright. Anyway, to give her the credits - at least she did her job but given a choice I would rather be served by a more pleasant waitress.

The ice cream was delicious and tasty coffee. Good location of the restaurant, with outdoor area, car park on the kerb side, wheelchair people are welcome too, toilets available. Great staff and fast service.

I love the Tenderlone here, it is so delicious!! The most premium beef I had in North NZ. I ordered it medium and it won’t be chewy. The pork belly is bit heavy for one person, lucky that I shared with my friends. I had been there twice and I ordered Penne salmon at second times. However, it bring me down....it is too sour... Btw, the service is good and still still love this restaurant. I would visit again if I travel to NZ agai

Excellence in food, well done Kitchen brigade!!...on our visit FOH staff were flustered and overwhelmed due to a rostering issue apparently..we sat outside and it deeply affected our service, wait times for our drinks was unacceptable, though meals came out quickly to avoid a clash with a very large booking....it made us feel rushed. The waiter mistakenly heard a dessert order thus bring out the wrong dessert....which then took forever to replace...the stess rippled to us as customers

We often come to Osteria for family meals due to their awesome selection which caters to all diners. The restaurant is really beautiful and inviting. The tables are well set up to accommodate big groups. The staff are always friendly and fun, great banter, 10/10.

Highly recommended place. The ambiance is warm and cozy with a rustic Italian house vibe. The food was awesome, pork belly was flavorsome and have the crispy crackling intact. Beef short ribs was tender and slow cooked perfectly. Salmone Pizza is above average, needs to have a bit more season and toast on the crust, to make it perfect. Service team are very friendly and accommodating.

As my partner is gluten intolerant, we aren't often able to enjoy Italian food. Osteria offers a complete gluten free menu including fresh, delicious pasta and bread options. Food was great , only issue we had was our waiter liked the sound of his own voice a little too much, I think he believed he was funny but in fact all he was, was rude. (unprofessional) Reminded me of faulty towers. Don't let this put you off normally it's a great place to eat.

Wow...what a gorgeous place. My work colleague recommeded this place so my partner and I called in for lunch on a Saturday. Luckily they were able to seat us. We looked at the menu n thought oh.. pork belly..lamb shank..thats us. We decided not to have apetisers and just as well!!!. OMG...the meal was just devine..both dishes..it was piping hot and just melted in your mouth. The veges though not many was enough..you wouldnt have eaten it all. We rested our stomachs and thought lets try a dessert..so Tiramasu for me and chocolate lava cake for him. OMG..the Tiramasu was just perfect with the taste of liqueur through it. My partner just devoured the lava cake snd there wasn't a crumb left! So now I say gotta try the coffee...long blacks for us and we were not dissappointed. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal there having just walked in with no reservation. The service was great, the atmosphere relaxing, we never felt under pressure to finish our meals quickly and leave...All in all a wonderful experience I would like to make a suggestion..perhaps a dinner mint with the coffee to end the perfect meal. This would really set you apart from the others...Thank You!!!

Made a reservation for dinner. Got there and was told that "that guy there needs to seat you" ... We waited and waited and were finally shown to a table. The same person that said "that guy there needs to seat you" then came and took our order for drinks and entree. Entree almost arrived before the drinks. Main order taken and that arrived swiftly too. Meals as always were absolutely beautiful. Our table was then cleared and we saw nobody... we normally end our meals here with dessert, a grappa and a coffee...but after waiting for over 10 minutes with our wait staff cleaning knives and forks out the back and no one else in sight, we decided that we would leave. Very disappointed in the service. There is a guy that works here who has amazing wait skills and in the past we have had him, and he's made our experience great (dark hair and pony tail). This time we were sadly disappointed. What happened to the white table cloths and the beautifully laid tables that were all part of great dining experience? What happened to the great wait staff? Just feel that the front of house staff really let this place down (except for one). It used to be a special place, now, sadly it's lacklustre.

Osteria is absolutely awesome. They don't do delivery, however I have a very sick relative in Matamata who we wanted to do something nice for and get a nice meal to them and Osteria didn't hesitate to help out. Amazing food, amazing people, would highly recommend.

We were very pleasantly surprised to get a table when fully booked with conditions of timing for two families, the service and atmosphere improved from there. The service being friendly and professional/casual. Eight individual plates delivered timely with fantastic results, well presented content. Seems that some people in this business, still care about good honest food. The chef actually knows how to prepare and execute a great 'blue' cut of beef. Support NZ local tourism. When visiting nearby, I would suggest booking Osteria in advance. I generally never post, because I am constantly disappointed, cook better at home or pay same price in more competitive regions with less than half the result. Thank you again 'Greek' Mikael, compliments to the Chef for the beautiful 'blue'. Keep doing what works well, treasure and look after what works!

Amazing restaurant strategically centered in an dynamic little town and with great food, atmosphere, and service. My wife and I were blown away when on a subsequent visit some days after our first, the waiter remembered what we had ordered on our first visit and also asked where our bicycles were as we had ridden there on our previous visit. Somehow that works to make you feel really good. I totally recommend a visit

Absolutely love this place! My wife and I went there on our wedding night and they took amazing care of us! The food and service were both top-notch! We ended up coming back to Matamata for our last two days in New Zealand and ended up eating here two more times. 😂 Osteria was definitely one the highlights of our trip!

Staff were amazing, absolutely wonderful. Couldn’t really fault the main courses. Tenderloin was melt in your mouth. The tiramisu and the spiced piña colada on the other hand were pretty nasty. Tiramisu was dry and tasted like they had used the “biscotti savoiardi” pack that had been sitting in a tin open for 8 weeks or so. No real coffee flavour coming through at all and was just pretty yuck. The spiced piña colada had no resemblance to a piña colada at all. Well the colour was kinda right.....the flavour was like my 7 year son had made me a concoction from things he’d found underneath the kitchen sink. Probably some kind of premixed goop straight out of a bottle. If it were my place and the drink tasted that bad , I wouldn’t bother putting it on the menu.

The pork belly was good good I could have cried, the way the crackling peeled off, how crackly it was, how tender the meat was, the tears were real. I spent so much time staring lovingly at each forkful, it was just divine. Dont even get me started on the tiramisu, almost cried there too. It was a journey for my tastebuds. And the waiters accent is great too. Highly recommend, worth the trip!

Wow what a great find! We were driving through Matamata and stopped to find somewhere for lunch - we chose Osteria as it looked busy. We were absolutely blown away by the great service and fabulous food. I had the half duck and my husband the Ossobuco both were absolutely superb as was the pizza our son enjoyed. We really enjoyed this restaurant. Without a reservation on a Saturday night, we were delighted to be able to drop in early and get a seat. Never having been in Matamata before we were unaware that the Osteria has two inside dining areas, perhaps at one time two different establishments, side by side, but it is the same business, the same menu. One seems to be a little more traditional decor, the second perhaps more rustic. We each chose the lamb shank, a New Zealand specialty, and an unexpected offering in an Italian restaurant, but a welcome choice not found frequently in Ametican restaurants. It arrived quickly and was delicious, just falling off the bone! We also treated ourselves to desserts and were again delighted with the quality of the food, both in taste and presentation.

Fantastic service from the time you call them to make your booking to, greeting you when you arrive right through until you leave. Their catering for gluten free dietary needs is great and they have a whole separate one page menu for them. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and the sound levels were quite low, the staff very professional and efficient. We ordered bread an dips one which was a GF option, then mains were GF market fish (about 6 fillets of snapper beautifully cooked), a salmon pasta and mine was a seafood entree as a main. The portions were all very generous and the flavors delicious. Dessert was a GF pannacotta, and a hot chocolate drink. While I of course had Tiramisu and a hot chocolate. The only hiccup came at the end when my mother in law tried to race up and pay the bill for us. Staff were very helpful and managed to divert that... Price was extremely reasonable for 3 people not much over $50 ea incl drinks (we dont drink alcohol) All in all, a very pleasurable dining experience and thoroughly recommended to all. God bless.

The food and wine is great at this terrific Italian restaurant on an easy to find corner on the main street of Matamata but what is exceptional is the customer service. We have been served three times now by the same friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming male staff member, and to be fair we keep returning because of this combination. What also scores them a 5 is that they have gluten free and vegetarian meals that are delicious. My partner is a meat eater and it's rare to find somewhere that caters to both of us. It was not as good as last time about 3 weeks ago I was there it was fantastic. The service was amazing they were very attentive. We waited for half an hour but the food was worth the wait yet now I came with family members telling them that this was a good place to have lunch. But the atmosphere was just different... We ordered the beef Cut of the day and lasagne. We waited for like 20 minutes but it wasn't worth it. Why? Because we found that the steak was abit raw and bloody. We couldn't get a staff as there buzy. So we stayed quite. BTW: Its not as great as you think....

No fresh fish and I had to add salt to get some flavour. It was $29. Male ordered the canneloni and he thoroughly enjoyed it which was good.

The steak was surprisingly good for a non steak house, served with a side of Bernaise sauce and the risotto (pork and leek special of the day) was very yummy with a sprinkle of rocket leaves. Service was so-so. We asked for a child seat thrice before we got any. It seemed like the maître-dee wasn’t too excited about helping us apart from getting us to our table, or he can’t multi task beyond passing us our menu. However the waitress who served us later was helpful and chirpy. They didn’t have any children’s cutlery or plastic plates / bowls, and I didn’t remember seeing a kid’s menu so this isn’t really a place for families with kids. Be prepared to share you food with your child or order an extra adult portion for them. Overall a recommended place for dinner in this little town (there aren’t that many other options anyway). Price was about $108 for 2 entrees and 2 mains, no wine.

If you are a Kiwi, 4 stars. If you have ever been in any decent Italian restaurant (something VERY rare in NZ), 2 stars. The restaurant has very nice environment and staff. However I go to a restaurants mainly for the food. We had a pizza prosciutto and gnocchi. Gnocchi itself was the type you can buy in supermarket and the sauce was on school cafeteria level. Pizza was small, very little prosciutto, absolutely not worth the price. Again, you can buy pizza like that frozen in a supermarket. I certainly would not excpect such a low quallity from a restaurant which claims to be Italian. I was in Wellington few days ago and had prosciutto pizza at Napoli so the good pizza there was still in my mind. That is how prosciutto should look and taste like, so maybe the chef (and most of the cooks attempting to make pizza in New Zealand) should pay a visit to learn how to make pizza. Sum up - nice staff and environment, mediocre food, certainly not what you would expect from an Italian restaurant.
