Reviews of Izakai Bar & Eatery
m.
Amazing experience had the $60 a head option where they bring out different options from the menu and just thoroughly enjoyed all the food and the whole taste experience. Amazing service and just a great night of food. Excellent fusion Maori and Japanese kai. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Bay of plenty.
T.
Fantastic Japanese & Maori fusion food and staff (the fusion mainly relates to the food rather than the staff) . A good selection of spirits and wines too. We had a great night here watching the world go by from one of their high tables. We had a good view of the chefs having a good view of us watching to see if they were watching us eat their delicious dishes 😊. Thank you to all.
S.
I wanted to love this place, but it was just ok. The ambiance is warm and calm, the menu reads well, the insta photos are attractive…and the food? Just ok. Certain elements were great (the pork belly slices were juicy, tender mouthfuls), others were lacking (the ramen egg noodles tasted like instant noodles). The beef tataki was bland and $25 for 6 gyoza is ambitious. All dishes were presented beautifully.
T.
Friendly staffs and nice atmosphere.
For foods, be honest, i was expected more like Japanese fusion style. But it wasnt really like that.
It wasnt amazingly tasty but good. However, for a main, our menu was very small portions but expensive. The octopus starter was ok though
O.
Monday night is a real treat and a variety of flavors. The taste buds started to tingle. Each of us had an Okonomiyaki, the most amazing smoked fish and roe, and an amazing Katsu broccoli on sour plum cream. In the end, I ate mochi ice cream, which is ice cream in thick stewed buns-great.
This is a must visit restaurant, whether it's the incredible flavor or the friendly team.
Thank you for a wonderful dinner night
K.
Words do not begin to explain how amazing this food was. We came for lunch and spent $65 p/h to try a bit of everything. The food was beautifully presented. The flavours were on point. The staff were attentive without being over the top. We will be back.
s.
This was a delicious meal, the ramen was absolutely amazing. It had a mild kick to it which was nice. It also had some thicker noodles which is nice to see. The entrees were very tasty and the twist of Māori and Japanese was interesting but the two worked well together. The place it’s self was in the new part of Bayfair which is done very nicely and the decor inside the restaurant managed to flow with the outside. The food also came very quickly and the staff were very prompt which is nice to see. Very nice evening out.
A.
Went to Izakai for dinner. It was a very pleasant evening. The staff looked after us extremely well and were super friendly. As for the food it was amazing, the fusion between Maori and Japanese food was scrumptious.
We order some Edamame Beans with spicy kick and they were amazing definitely worth it! My favourite dish was the Kaitaia Fire Karaage Chicken. 🤤🤤🤤 it was perfectly cooked with the right flavours to make your mouth water.
If you are wanting a great place with amazing food definitely recommend. And why not try one of their cocktails 🍸!
L.
Wow! Incredible food with a lot of variety on the menu. Every dish we ordered was amazing and came out in really good time. Service was great and will definitely return again.
A.
Seriously I was blown away with this place. The coconut infused gin cocktail is incredible and the food was a huge surprise. Very impressed . Beautiful fit out , good vibe you would not think you were at Bayfair. A cross over of NZ and Japanese food. Very clever..I will be back . The Paua and prawn dumplings not to be missed and the karanga chicken udon soup was perfect. Well done.
M.
Cannot rate this place highly enough - the food is amazing!! We had the lunch special which was a great way to try a variety of dishes & we discovered the prawn & creamed paua dumplings 😍 next time I may just order them they are that good!! 😉
H.
Maori / Japanese fusion food based on shared food concept. Dumpling was disappointing and felt tasteless. Karage was pretty good. The hangi ramen was yum. Broth was flavorful and the meat was juicy and pack full of goodness. Would come back just for the ramen.
S.
Exceptional food and service. The ramen is a must have as its broth is very rich and flavorful. My only regret was that I was too full after the first bowl to go for another one. The chicken karaage was really juicy and flavorful as well. Overall a must try if you're in Tauranga.
J.
Food was delicious, especially the paua and prawn gyozas. Friendly service, made us feel very welcome!
L.
We got the taster menu and it was great. The creamed paua and prawn gyoza and karaage chicken were particularly good.
j.
Well where do i start.😍😍😍😍.
Okay. This place is the bees knees. Ive been there a total of sixteen times. The staff are friendly and have given great service upon every visit. The food is exceptionally great. I recommend the hangi pork ramen and the fire chicken one of my personal faves🤤. Ive added some photos down below so you get a good idea of what yah getting yourself into. #Yumyyumyinmytummy

Had an opportunity to have lunch without my young children! The staff were very helpful and friendly explaining the concept of the menu and the food. Its Japense with a Maori infusion. The food was so tasty definitely will be returning.
A.
Wow!! Such a beautiful meal!! Splashed out and was treated to a fantastic taster menu, everything was delicious!!! Also some great value options with their yummy ramen dishes about $25. Great staff and atmosphere!! We'll be back!!
J.
Amazingly tasty and innovative dishes. Locally inspired recipes. The kina and scallop dumplings were mind blowing. Service is efficient.
T.
LOVED IT, i wouldn't get any of the Ramen Dishes again but EVERYTHING else was amazing. 10/10 for me. p.s Ramen dishes just weren't for me, other tables were smashing theirs 😁👍🏾
L.
Incredible food, coupled with the perfect atmosphere.
Truly unique experience for the taste buds and a nice change from same food, different restaurant. We had the taster option and everything was delish. Our waiter was the owner and he explained the menu so well.
Highly recommend!
a.
Nicest wait staff ever, recommendations where spot on , best meal we have had in the last 6 months, highly recommend izakai to everyone.
T.
Had a lovely evening, food was devine and friendly staff. Highly recommend if you want something different
M.
Always delivers the best meal. Consistently amazing. And a tasty cocktail never goes amiss.
D.
Beautiful food. Options galore no matter what you like. You won't see a dessert menu but may be offered a brulee. This is definitely a "share" dessert, its huge! It had dried lychees on it...amazing 😳
A.
Epic food, amazing service. Definitely going to bring friends here!!
M.
Excellent food, excellent service!
Something different. 🌻
K.
Highly recommend ! Beautiful lunch. Will definitely return !!!! Excellent service and excellent Kai :)
B.
Delicious ramen and great service. The decor is on point too. Such a great idea to have a Maori-Japanese fusion restaurant. This will be our go-to restaurant to visit once the neighbouring cinema is complete.
D.
Absolutely delicious blend of japanese and maori kai ! We ordered two of the $65 where they choose what to bring out for you an it was amazing! .20/10 for service also they were really friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely bringing our families back here
F.
Nice food, but challenged with shortage of staff and some dishes due to Covid 19.
Certainly trying to do their best
a.
Me and my husband have had the "let's eat" meals 4 times now, we absolutely love it! Each time we get to try amazing new dishes, our fav is the paua and prawn dumplings with the cauliflower sauce, the wasabi kingfish and the ice cream mochi dessert 🤤🤤🤤. Mouthwatering and amazing service every time. Highly recommend and our number 1 treat to ourselves.
G.
Been there before, can't wait to go back.
Great service from Liam, suggestions were delicious.
A.
Nice dining.. good service cocktails were very good
B.
The food was amazing! Excellent Service. Loved it!
M.
Most enjoyable. Pleasant food and surroundings . Relaxing thank you......
H.
Service is nice and friendly, taste is good, price was high for ramen.
D.
Had the cream paua dumplings and they were the best dumplings we have had.
C.
Some great dishes, loved the Paua/prawn fritters, the cabbage fritters and the cauliflower. Some dishes took a lot longer to come than others, some of us were nearly finished when last people got their meals, and need to track if all drinks arrive, but overall we'd be happy to return
S.
This is our 3rd meal here. We are out of town and make a point of having dinner here when we're in town. Again 5/5 amazing food, excellent service and a wonderful environment
Thanks team, see you next time
s.
Had the most lovely dining experience here. Staff were very welcoming and super friendly. Food was delicious! We had high expectations and we were not disappointed. We will be back for sure!
K.
I have received a wonderful impression about the flavors. I have been in NZ for one year and this is my first time that every things was awesome. The restaurant doesn't have a lot of options but this is enogh for make you feel like a child trying new flavors.
Aprecio el trabajo dedicado de todos los cocineros en este lugar! Muchas gracias!!!
Me encantó!
R.
The most unexpectedly good meal I've had in ages. Amazing service. Great drinks. The food is outrageouslt good. We got Ramen and cauliflower and some wee side bits...... Could not fault it. Would 100% recommend. We will be back and be telling everyone I know.
J.
We had a great meal here over the weekend. Tasty food, a wee bit on the rich side but still nice, good drink selection too. Option to sit in the courtyard which is more casual than the restaurant, inside the restaurant has a nice vibe.
M.
Totally awesome!!!
Great place, staff and food....especially the food! Cocktails were very good too.
With so many places around serving the usual stuff, Izakai really stands out with dishes that are unique + freak'n awesome💥💯
V.
Beautiful flavours through the whole meal. Favorite by far the Ika Mata, music in your mouth 💯 Recommend this place to blow your tatse buds. Our hostess Beth was outstanding, super friendly and made us feel very welcome and comfortable. Those mochi balls, so perfect to end the meal, beautiful beautiful flavours.
j.
The food was yumo! Dumplings superb.pork belly and watercress tasty..all round thumbs up
C.
Nice food, atmosphere, very clean, lovely service lady too
B.
Izakai is definitely an atmosphere I appreciate being in, having being a local Maori myself and also previously studying Japanese at Tauranga Girl's College.
The kai was a nice surprise, but I really enjoyed the experience of eating it more. The welcoming and service was good too.
It was the the finer details for me👌🏾
Being a bit pricey, would be the only reason why I didnt rate IZAKAI a 5.
J.
Outstanding…my first choice for unquestionably great food & service.
O.
Normally LOVE this place. But really disappointed tonight after paying $18 for 4 pieces of toast. The actual entree was only $12 and we only asked for the plain bread without the rest of the dips because we just wanted the bread to dip in the left over sauces from our meals. Very disappointed that even when we mentioned it, and they agreed how irrational it was to pay $18 for 4 pieces of toast, absolutely nothing was done, especially when we had just spent over $200. Sour ending to an otherwise great meal.
S.
Divine food. Attentive, friendly staff. Cool set up and atmosphere. A delightful place to dine. We ate here twice in the three days we spent at The Mount. Can't wait to go back.
Y.
Japanese Maori fusion is so unique and genius. The flavours are mind blowing! I've never tasted anything like it. The paua and prawn dumplings is my favourite and I don't even like truffle oil. So creamy and just wow. This is the number one place I recommend to everyone. My colleagues went and they agree that it is AMAZING. Not even exaggerating. The money is definitely worth it.
C.
The food was absolutely divine and reasonably priced for the amount and quality given. The customer service was top notch, and our waiter Zac had a great knowledge of the food, was charismatic and made excellent recommendations. We will be back next week!
C.
The food is divine! You will eat food you never thought you would. The flavours are next level. Love this place!
M.
THE Best Maori/Asian fusion I have tasted to date and I have come across many flopped attempts previously. All the flavours and presentation was on point, So Delicious! Staff were great and restaurant is modern and clean. Thank you 🙂
E.
They kai was amazing we had the $65 platter thing you get to try abit of everything i recommend it if its ur 1st time there like it was for me and my partner we left there full wowed and happy was great
C.
We all loved our first dining experience at Izakai. The food was wonderful, the servers lovely. Why haven't we tried Izakai before? We will definitely be back very soon.
B.
Expensive. Small portions. Lovely food though. Very rich. We booked a week in advance and got the worst table in the room! When we asked for another table, we were told they were fully booked?? Why bother book? Very disappointing. We won't be back.
T.
Food was to die for!!! Love the infusion on Japanese and Maori. The Ramen was amazing with the hanging pork, the gyoza just everything was amazing!!! 👍👍👍
A.
Very flavoursome food Asian and Maori Infusion the combination of the both worked very well together very impressed with the welcome as our hostess Beth greeted us with a Kia Ora which felt very warming ☺️ kei te tino Ataahua, the Ika Mata and the Mochi were absolutely extraordinary the taste left my tastebuds mesmorised! Kei te tino pai! Well done! You definitely need to come here to eat!
K.
We arrived and was told there was a wait for a table so we sat at the bar - the wait for the table was only around 10 minutes which was fine. We were seated and placed our order, we weren't told about any wait time on food but it took almost 45 minutes to receive our first dish, we had the prawn skewers which were okay but not quite what we expected. We then waited another 20 minutes for the next dish, beef and mushroom dumplings which again were okay but a bit expensive for $19, when this arrived I asked about the rest of the food which came out quite quickly afterwards. This is when it picked up, the okonomiyaki was delicious and a great serving size to share! Full of flavour and left you wanting more and the fried chicken was crispy with a great dipping sauce and a big portion. Those two meals really picked up the experience for us but I wont be back again after those wait times without any notice before ordering.
S.
Very good food but someone needs to tell the waitress not to clear the table when a diner is still eating. Very surprised that they do not know this. She actually did it twice.
s.
This is one of the most unique restaurants I've had the pleasure of experiencing in the recent past.
I say experience because it truly is. A feast for the entire sensory spectrum when you come in. With the open kitchen, music in the background that just puts you right in the mood to catch up with your mates or make a new friend for the night.
You can choose to take a seat at a table or just jump up by the bar and have a couple of drinks ranging from pretty good bottled beers to a choice of cocktails that really get take the edge off and get into good conversation.
And to top all that, the menu is one that I haven't seen before, but truly appreciate and respect. As an international in New Zealand, the idea of integration and developing a harmonious fusion of my culture and the culture within which I am now one, I truly respect the incredible harmony and artistry that the dishes display.
From plating right to the delicate, yet perfectly balanced taste. The fusion of Japanese and Maori flavours work in such a beautiful way that I must say, I didn't know was possible.
Amazing.
L.
The aroma from the food served to your table is nothing short of exquisite and the taste is superb. Both a Japanese dish with a local influence that can only be found in Aotearoa. Kudos to Izakai - I don't believe I've tasted anything quite like it before. And the cost is extremely reasonable. Definitely an experience to share. Well done!
W.
Took my girlfriend out for a date here tonight and the food was AMAZING!!! 10 out of 10! The service was impeccable, 10 out of 10, the atmosphere and the whole vibe of the place was wonderful. The timing was awesome we didnt have to wait long, the cocktails were beautiful & im a Gold Medallist in cocktails!!
I loved the little small extra details they had like the coasters for each individual cocktail was a great touch👌ive brought ours home as a soveunir of this wonderful restraunt. We were completely satisfied with everything here, we would recommend it to everyone and we will definitly be back again very soon!!! :) The Japanese and maori infusion styled food was TINO REKA!!!! I LOVED IT WE LOVED IT SO SO MUCH! Thankyou for a great dining experience IZAKAI u guys are amazing x
L.
The menu sounded so enticing and the aroma coming from the kitchen so tempting that we decided that it would be worth the wait. We were a large group so had to wait for one of the bigger tables to become vacant. In the end we asked if we could sit outside and have some hot tea and they kindly brought us complimentary cups of tea. Once comfortably seated inside (it was a cold night) we ordered a range of dishes and each was a perfect combination of textures and taste, the ingredients a subtle fusion of Japanese and Maori cuisines. Seldom does a meal elicit universal acclaim in a group of 6. Even our 5 yr old loved the ramen which the chef prepared specially for him. We will be back!
H.
3rd time... 10/10 loved our agria potatoes, paua & prawn dumplings,
Rewena bread, tahr tacos! So good!
Quick & always so bang on! Thank u team! ✨✨✨✨✨
J.
Came in with my misses and her sister. I have been in Hospitality for 7 years, and Zach our server, by far, is the most wonderful man to come to our table and serve us. His passion and knowledge of would make any establishment owner proud. I recommend IzaKai to everyone. 11/10
J.
Have been more than a few times and every time their flavours are so captivating. Maori/japanese fusion so it gave me really familiar flavours just heightened to another level. I try to visit every time I stop or pass by the mount
S.
I really liked eating here , it was different and the fusion of different cultures foods was a new refreshing experience.
I had the hangi Pork and Watercress Ramen and it was delicious, the pork tasted just like hangi and the broth was amazing I just couldn't stop eating it.
I also tried the paua and prawn dumplings they were delightful my only concern was the cauliflower took away from the paua flavor.
I definitely would eat here again .
A.
The food is a 5, but the service was well below average. One of the blonde waitresses should NOT be in customer service. Glares at customers, didnt smile or talk to us while serving. My Dad commented he didn’t need ice in his glass it would have frozen when she touched it!!! Awful girl. To top it off she was eating out the back but in full view of customers, spat a dumping out into her hand and into the bin while we could see!! 🤮 wouldn’t go back unfortunately as she made it quite an unpleasant atmosphere. Hygiene standards questionable.
M.
Stunning food and excellent friendly service.
Food is as good as we have experienced in New Zealand. Deserves more than just accolades from local punters. Really hope the Cuisine judges visit!
P.
Superb food, excellent service, reasonably priced, cosy ambience and a wonderful experience trying the different dishes.....we weren't disappointed and will not hesitate in going back there for more!
G.
Very understated with not a lot of people dining. Went with the Steinlager Tokyo Dry.
It was ice cold and refreshing. The Kaitaia Fire Karaage Chicken was the best I have ever eaten. Very good service polite and courteous.
A.
Superb delicious birthday lunch. Excellent service, great place for the family to enjoy a birthday lunch. Thank you Maia and all the staff
T.
Food was amazing!!! Staff were great. Cocktails menu is unique too. Highly recommend
H.
Kai was amazing but service wasn't the greatest. We were the only 2 people in the restaurant and it took far too long after sitting down for them to take our orders.
W.
Kapai good te kai.

H.
Exceptionally great flavors 😋 love this place.

A.
Amazing food here!! Love the ramen and riwai potatoes. Good staff too and clean and tidy
J.
Food to Die for ! I had a Prawn Dish,3 large Prawns over savoury rolls. It was DELICIOUS! It sounds like a small meal, but I couldn't have eaten anything else.
C.
Fantastic food. Great combination of kiwi tastes and Japanese cooking styles. I recommend if you're looking for something unique that you give Izakai a try.
K.
FABULOUS AGAIN !!!! this is our 2nd time coming here and could not fault anything, meal was amazing and so was service both times. DEFINITELY will be going back.
C.
Highly recommend—exquisite food, drinks and overall dining experience. Best Japanese fusion in NZ!
D.
Nice food, great decor and helpful staff but pretty pricey. We had lunch, 2 x ramen, 1 x dumpling and a drink each and it was over $80 which felt like a pretty expensive lunch
P.
Amazing Food, I loved how it was about sharing food rather than a plate per person
N.
Food was really good.😁 We were a group of 10 and meal delivery was a bit disjointed and service slow. Would eat here again definitely but not in a big group
J.
Beautiful food all round! Extra shout out to the young man who helped serve us, i think he was the bartender, the epitome of what great service looks like, cheers bro.
B.

I give Izakai five stars because that's the limit. I have many visitors who ask where to go. I suggest Izakai...every time... I've only ever received a thanks for the recommendation. Hands down, fabulous....every single time😁
F.
Liked the concept of fusing kiwi kai with Asian flavors. Impressed with the attention to detail- like bathrooms having wash cloths instead of paper towels.
a.
Interesting menu, great food, fine service, nice ambience. Only criticism is could have a slightly more extensive menu
C.
Food was delicious, though wait staff were a bit strange. Didn't exactly serve us, just put the food on the table and left.
T.
Wow... must try people... but please remember its not at a whanau's house. So if you try the cream paua dont expect what you know. Open mind. But worth a try. I loved it
K.
This place and concept is a real gem. Inventive menu and everything was delicious. This was a real standout experience in Mt Maunganui.

(Translated) The price is small and the service and environment are good. I recommend abalone dumplings, fried chicken, and octopus dumplings. They are really delicious. Do not order seafood ramen and tofu ramen. They are too unpalatable. I didn't give 5 stars because of these two bowls. The noodles are really expensive and unpalatable
