Reviews of Hunger Monger Seafood

Came here today after seeing it being fully packed on a Thursday night. We had the green curry mussel with the pita bread as starters. The main was fish of the day john dory with kumara mash and kale. We also had the prawn spaghetti. The mussel texture and flavour was very very good, right amount of chili and spiciness and very flavourful and tasty. The main was just as good, the john dory was crispy and right amount of tenderness, the kumara mash was full of flavour and I can taste a bit of smokiness. The kale was fried just enough to bring out the flavour. The spaghetti had nice amount of creaminess but not enough to cause flavour overload. The sauce also have a very good natural prawn taste. This chef is very talented, possibly one of the best. I wish the portion would be a bit bigger though.

Best seafood restaurant in Napier. Very friend staff. Right in front of the waterfront. Would definitely come back again! The quality of the food is amazing for the price you pay. We cannot wait to come back again. Still thinking about the grilles octopus 👌👌👌
I.
Food was excellent but long waiting time. Almost 1 hour between starters n main. Booked in for tomorrow night. Thats how good.

Hunger Monger is one of the top rated restaurants in Napier and for good reason. The top notch food makes it essential to have a booking to avoid disappointment. We went with oysters, a range of small dishes and one large dish which was the grilled John Dory. Service was good with insightful and attentive staff. All dishes were on the small side so if you're sharing you'll need quite a number to fill up. Overall a nice spot to have dinner and enjoy a nice walk afterwards by the water.
J.
totally enjoyed my dining experience here!! We had two starters, coconut cream Paua pockets and butter poached crayfish on a crumpet. They were both absolutely delicious, and will have these again! We then ordered the fish of the day, and Spaghetti of Queensland Prawns which were also very good. The Staff were very friendly, and i am looking forward to seeing what will be on the menu on my next visit
Update 2/12/21 again was overall very happy with my dining experience. Totally love the laid back atmosphere at hunger monger. The food was Amazing!!!! Tonight we enjoyed Oysters(3 crumbed, 3 battered),Gyoza Paua dumplings, Smoked Fish Croquettes, Bouillabaisse and classic fish and chips. Everything was absolutely delicious!!!!!!!
Once again the Staff were amazing, thank you!! I reccomend this place to dine 100%
刘.
Gorgeous food, with Asian fusion. I loved the white miso, & the kumara mash was so rich and filling. The asparagus was so tender. The dumplings unique. Beautiful 🤙🏻
Definitely the most friendly and consideration waitresses I've ever had. Thank you for taking good care of us and giving us extra layers and blankets when we chose to sit outside. You've been lovely.
V.
Seafood was fresh and tasty. Meals came out on time and staff were friendly and attentive. A bit pricey; there were 8 of us and it was an expensive night which is my only reason for not giving stars. Lovely flavors. The seafood options were innovative, interesting and didn't detract from the fresh seafood. The flavors were enhanced without being over powered. Well be back.
M.
We dined here last night during Art Deco.
Outstanding service, amazing food and drinks oh and the desert!!
We orderd the Sashimi, raw oysters, green lip mussels starter, raw fish starter and the fish n chips.
My husband and I eat out often at lots of different restaurants, after our experience dining here we rate Hunger Monger as being right up there with the best of them!
Reasonable prices and tasty fresh food!! We were told to make sure you book a table because this place is very popular..I now understand why.
I have a feeling this will be a regular spot for us!
Congratulations team!!
N.
Beyond our expectations. Excellent service, delicious, well-thought out dishes. The tiramisu was slightly different to what you’d normally expect but it was divine.
T.
Very interesting menu and good food. We really enjoyed our time there. Sashimi was good, not great. Paua dumplings were interesting. Octopus skewers were nice. Tempura squid was great. Fish and chips were great.
V.
A restaurant popular with fish and oysters! Super busy during the weekend's dinner so reservation in advance is a must. The fish we ordered is fresh and cooked to perfection! The best fish and chip I have ever had!
M.
Wonderfully cooked fresh seafood. Oysters, Sashimi, Hapuku delicious. Not a fan of the squid myself but other squid eaters loved it. Good wine selection to go with it and a short walk to accommodation.
I.
This place is absolutely amazing! Stand out food! Stand out service ! The lovely Polish lady who served us was exceptional, all 12 of us enjoyed everything about this place. Highly recommend!!!!
S.
Great service, friendly and helpful. Got takeaway crumbed fish and haloumi, beautiful fish easily one of the best I’ve had in NZ. Generous portions too.
J.
OK, so I like fish and seafood and Hunger Monger is very much about these things. And they do it with finesse and imagination and with great service. We had 3 courses, everything was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious.
D.
Always very friendly and hospitable. Hosts. Food is French style seafood. Had the oysters which were great. Organic ones which are rare in nz. The bouillabaisse was flavourful and chock full of seafood and crusty bread.
e.
Overall a good experience, good service and food. Crayfish on crumpets was the standout dish for us.
Also just an interesting little thing we noticed on one of the menu items, which said “unpronounceable sauce”. We got curious and asked them what it was and the waitress had to go to the kitchen and ask. She came back and tried to pronounce it to us. Turns out it is yang nyum jang - a korean seasoning sauce. At first we just laughed it off, but after giving it some thought, we thought it was very disrespectful. If you’re gonna use it in your restaurant, then just learn how to pronounce it. If you can’t, then don’t use it. ✌🏼

THIS! is what food should taste like! By far one of the best restaurants we’ve tried in NZ. Will be visiting Napier again especially for this. Auckland should really learn a thing or two from HM.
The staff: very friendly and know what they’re doing & serving.
The chefs: the food says it all. You can see, smell and taste the dedication and professionalism.
The oysters are delicious. Crab risotto is perfectly flavoured - the crab so well cooked you can eat it whole.
Sashimi was very good too. Fresh.
The grilled blue nose fish & Kumar w/ kimchi tastes hand made. You can’t get this in a jar or shop!
Desert is also top notch - though sad the creek brule (sp?) is off the menu :(
The only hiccup I’d say is that the wine was too little - they should serve more in the glass.
Make sure you bookmark and visit as it’s a must for Napier.

After walking by many times, we finally made a reservation for a Friday night and was not disappointed.
The starter entrees are between $12-$15, they were very accomodating and added an extra prawn for $3. Very crunchy and crispy batter on the squid and prawns, but definitely relied on the sauces for flavour (Tempura and Japanese sesame dressing). I would've loved the squid itself to be seasoned more with salt, pepper, chilli and garlic but maybe the predominant demographic here wouldnt be into it. Rock Oysters 6 for $20, fresh!
The "Korean" fries were delicious but personally I think they're more Japanese with the distinct Kewpie mayo, seaweed and bonito flakes ($12).
The mains selection was limited to about 5 from the basic menu ($20-$22): Fish tacos, fish & chips, fish burger, pot of mussels with pita bread, grilled fish w salad, and a cauliflower haloumi curry). All pretty standard NZ fare, but well presented and yummy. Ive been spoilt with dining options living overseas but for the less adventurous eaters this is good.
The special menu ($26-$28) had more interesting dishes to choose from. I got the grilled fish with broccolini and kumara miso mash which was probably my favorite flavour. We were absolutely stuffed at the end of the meal and had no room for dessert!
Everyone seemed to enjoyed their meals and service was good, the restaurant was warm and homely, love all the plants and art. Would probably come back and save room for dessert! Thank you!
K.
Our family meal was enjoyed by all. Fantastic venue and staff very friendly and accommodating as we had a 7month old baby with us.
A special thank you to Jess our waitress.
And the food was delicious.
Will definitely recommend to friends and family.
K.
Best sea food restauranr ever, eclectic successful fusion of mostly Asian cuisines, great wine list, amazing family operators.
H.
Not only was the main meal great they also have great dessert options.
N.
They have good reviews online so we tried it out. They did not disappoint! Their food is exceptional and service is great. Just make sure to make a booking because the place gets really packed.
s.
Absolutely fantastic place. Don’t be fooled by the simple decor - the dishes are complex, delicious, and beautifully presented. On top of this, the service was top notch. I will most certainly be back when I’m back in town next!
G.
Hunger Monger Seafood Restaurant is an attractive place filled place with an open kitchen. Service is friendly and good. The only complaint is that they salted the fish much too much greatly detracting from their taste. Reservations are suggested as they do fill up. Their seafood offerings are of course fresh.
V.
One of the best fish & chips and fish burger we ate so far here in New Zealand. Best seafood resto in town. Cheers to John of Fastastic Tour guide for recommending this one.
n.
Beautiful food. Reasonable price. Must go if you are fish lover. Most of the staff very nice and friendly. (But not all of them). Handle location.
N.
Simply delicious. Will be coming back to taste the other half of the menu.
B.
Utterly wonderful! We arrived around 5.30pm and noticed every single table had a “reserved” card on it. I asked with a hopeful tone “do you have a table for two?” Lucky for us they had a table that was booked for 6.30pm, we said we’d be finished by then and voila, we were seated 😀 hubby had the sashimi, it was beautiful! Slightly overpriced compared to fresh sashimi we can get in Rotorua, but delicious none the less. I had the linguine.....amazing!! The prawns were fat and hot right to the very last mouthful. The broth was scrumptious and the pasta, perfect 👌 I’d recommend booking in advance and we would definitely eat here again 😍
P.
What a great find. Recommended by my hotel. The restaurant had a wonderful vibe, though I went for takeaway. Fish offered as crumbled, battered or grilled. The chips were crispy and the fish very tasty. Not greasy at all. Came with tartare sauce and tomato ketchup. Mine was quick. Excellent. Friendly staff.
A.
This place is simply excellent. One of the best restaurants I have been in NZ and I would say, a pride for Nappier. Every plate on the menu that we have tried is well thought and structured to give you the best dinning experience and enhance/balance of the seafood flavours. Transparency in the kitchen which is open to see ever from your table. It is obvious that these people have passion for food. Everything is prepared on the spot, the "Poached Marlborough Salmon" was exceptional and so moist, same with Kumara Miso Mash and the desserts. GREAT WORK GUYS, KEEP IT UP.
T.
Excellent experience. But you will need a reservation. Staff was delightful, food was perfectly prepared. A very enjoyable visit.
P.
Best restaurant I found in 2 years of living in NZ. . . Delicious, interesting food cooked with real passion.
J.
I had the Grilled Fish w Kumara Miso mash, Broccolini, Sesame & Kim Chi style Bean Sprouts, and panna cotta with peaches and pistachios for dessert. The food was AMAZING. One of the best meals I have ever eaten. Phenomenal. Highly recommended!!
J.
Lovely restaurant and staff were accommodating. But I ABSOLUTELY LOVE SEAFOOD, which this place boasts. However, I have always been a firm believer to keep seafood as simple as possible when cooking so the menu was a little over the top for my palette. Oysters were amazing and I enjoyed the seafood pasta, but wasn't fussed on the other 5 dishes we shared. I would also suggest that they brighten up their plates with a little garnish. And there's no spirits or liquers on the drinks menu. But the restaurant was busy so I'm guessing some people like over the top, fancy seafood dishes, it's just not for me 🤔
B.
ocean view, friendly and effective service , excellent food.
we order mussels with Thai green curry source, never eat before and it is great !
L.
Went there based on TripAdvisor. The food was quite tasty but the service somewhat slow as we waited almost 20 minutes from the time the starters were over until the main courses arrived. Plus I was somewhat disappointed that one of their highly recommended dishes the mussels were not available because they had no stock. That seems strange given mussels are available all year
And was disappointing for a restaurant in a tourist area to surcharge the use of credit cards when that is going to be the most likely method of payment. $2 on a $100 menu seems a cost they could absorb. And then not to take payWave also adds insult to injury.
B.
(I recently edited my review to add an update and the owner of this place posted a rude reply. Owner: should I make my star rating even lower? You’ve got some nerve. You forget we are your customers. How ignorant.)
Original review from Dec 2020:
I’ve always loved coming here since arriving in Napier. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on delicious food here and it never disappoints. But beware when asking for a reservation that they do not honor requests for sitting at a specific table. I placed a reservation through their online form and asked specifically for a seat inside near the windows. When we arrived I found we were seated at a table near the back of the restaurant closest to the toilets. When I asked about this, the lady who seated us briskly explained they never specify which table we will get. I said that’s fine, but that was never clarified in the 4 emails back and forth even though I explicitly requested where we wanted to sit. I could even see her walk over to the other wait staff, tell them something and all of them looked over at us and seemed to be talking about us.
Later that night I emailed and complained about my experience and suggested that they should include a simple disclaimer that they “try to accommodate requests for specific tables but can’t always do that.” That seems like a simple fix. But they replied saying they’re too busy to confirm every aspect of reservation requests.
Well, a disclaimer would have saved me from being confused and having an embarrassing conversation when I arrived that night.
I still gave 4 stars because the excellent food shouldn’t suffer from one lady’s rude explanations and the person taking care of online reservations not taking my suggestions.
As a side note to the team at HMS, if a customer complains, just apologise, see if you can make it right, learn from it and keep moving. Don’t try to argue and make a case for yourself. That’s bad customer service and bad vibes.
(update: I got several emails from the owner that were rude and didn’t just say “sorry” as a normal person would. They were dead set on proving I was wrong and they were right. Sad to see terrible customer service like this from the top.)
In spite of all that, I’ll be back again because the rest of the staff are friendly, kind, accommodating and delightful. The food is amazing and it always feels good to be there.
M.
Service was really good, our young waitress was very knowledgeable. Fish was yum and now I will keep the next gemfish i catch.
B.
Great service, great food and great portions. We ordered the risotto, bouillabaisse, fish & chips, grilled fish, shrimp pasta, fresh oysters, fried squid and dark chocolate dessert with coca nibs. All the dishes looked very appetising and there was no disappointments around the table.
M.
The best seafood pasta, sashimi, location and friendly staff... I have tried the seafood pasta many times, but this is the best
I'm pretty sure that we will be back in this place 😃100% recommended
G.
The most amazing food and lovely staff!!
S.
Some of the group said their food was delicious (small items) but a few commented on the wrapped chips being soft, and too salty to eat. Probably best to leave the salt off entirely as patrons can then put on what they like, or leave it off altogether. (Hypertension) The chips in a bowl were crisp. Took an hour and 10 minutes for food to arrive, with only alcohol during that time, so drinking on empty stomachs - not ideal.
W.
Best meal I’ve had whilst roadtripping the North Island of New Zealand! Great selection of local seafood and wine. Lovely laid back atmosphere but where the food quality and presentation is top notch. Slow service but friendly staff.
Would definitely recommend!
C.
Great service. Friendly staff. Phenomenal food. Will be back for more! And highly recommend
A.
Fantastic service and amazing food. Great selection of non-alcoholic drink options, and a really cute and cozy atmosphere. 10/10 would reccomend.
M.
Perfectly fresh and tasty sashimi with a great salad
M.
Great and interesting food. Brilliant atmosphere and friendly staff.
D.
Most beautiful meal - everything just so tasty, presented so nicely & so impressed with extraordinary service. Top restaurant in our eyes...gotta b a favourite. Thank you.
j.
We love taking our visitors here as it is so cheerful. A restaurant with character and great service. The seafood is always super fresh. Fabulous menu, but remembering they specialize in seafood so if you are not a seafood fan check the menu before you go. They do have choices. Nice selection of wine etc. Eat indoors or outdoors looking over Marine Parade Mini Putt Putt.
J.
I felt more satisfied of the desserts than other dishes.
M.
Amazing place. Humble decor and an easy place to miss when walking past, but absolutely worth it! The service was excellent and the menu exciting and varied. The fare changes seasonally and I'd recommend trying a few of the smaller dishes and sharing them with the table.
J.
Beautiful team, wonderful service & the entrees we had was superb. Compliments to the chefs!
g.
just a good amount of portion, every dish has great flavour. nice waiters and cozy atmosphere!
J.
Amazing food and really good service.
E.
Korean smashed Fries & Long black were so awesome!
Definitely we will visit again!!
P.
Delicious selection of menu dishes and cheerful staff
E.
Amazing place for dinner. We ordered a variety of small dishes and each dish was a great experience and an amazing combination of flavours, very well thought out food, super fresh and the decor and ambience were very enjoyable. Waitress and service very attentive. Highly recommend! Thanks for having us!
J.
So this was a mixed bag, the place itself is quite cool (except it is actually boiling hot inside as they don't seem to have as much as a fan, let alone Aircon).
As for the food, we got some grilled fish and miso Kumara mash, this one was pretty good, the fish was well cooked, mash was tasty and it has a spicy Kimchi on top.
The other meal wasn't great, called burger rings it was a burger with squid and onion rings. The squid rings were underwhelming and under seasoned. The burger buns appeared to be a supermarket one and the chips were frozen and not even well cooked frozen chips. I can't understand a place like this that is trying to be a bit higher end using ingredients like these, very disappointing.
If you go I would probably avoid the fried stuff and anything with chips.
M.
Is there any better place on earth? Top food, Top customer service. Exceptional waitresses. Congrats guys.
R.
Stunning fish and salad. The salads are amazing, loved the beetroot carrot pomegranate verjuice. The owner was delightful showing me the ingredients and where to get them. The creme brulee was perfect. Fantastic value for money, punches well above its price.
J.
A fantastic find walked in and were lucky to get a seat because even on a Tuesday night they were very busy for good reason the food and the atmosphere was wonderful
P.
Superb fresh fish and seafood, masterfully prepared, cooked and presented (including octopus and real wasabi). Outstanding and efficient service. Very few like this in NZ, kia ora team for a great dining experience!
M.
Loved the food and atmosphere. Definitely go there again!
W.
Amazing! Ambience, Staff, Location.
Food was outstandingly delicious, fresh, prepared and cooked to perfection!!!
Seafood dumplings, crispy calamari, fresh sushimi, haloumi with tamarind chutney, seafood chowder, fresh snapper on a bed of pumpkin and lentils, fresh Fish and Chips. All of it we highly recommend, the seafood options on the menu are all worth trying.
The Staff are friendly and welcoming and make you feel special, relaxed and happy.
H.
Excellent seafood meals and very good service. We were a walk in but the manageress fitted us in before a later booking which was very accommodating and appreciated. Nice decor and atmosphere. Recommended dining.
N.
It was superb, I'm looking forward to going back next time we are in Napier
M.
Loved the food and atmosphere. Well done and thank you.
D.
Fantastic restaurant. Great service, incredibly hospitable, amazing food. The Crayfish crumpet was out of this world. I've never felt compelled to leave a review before going to Hunger Monger.
L.
Excellent food and service. Brittany got us a table at the second sitting of a very full restaurant. So worth the wait! Asian seafood hotpot is a fresh, generous bowl of fish and shellfish. Delicious.
Y.
Great atmosphere and service from the staff here who were especially accommodating to us with our little 1 year old. Grilled Fish and Fish Curry are highly recommended!
P.
We had a French dish with sea food, I don't remember the name, but it was sooo good!!
K.
We had a group of 7, I don't like seafood but I ate every bite it was beautiful. The staff were very organised and helpful. Would recommend in a heart beat
A.
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Fairly small, so you might struggle to get a table at peak times without a booking. Most of the food was absolutely delicious, but unfortunately our battered fish (sea perch) tasted... Uhm, terrible. Very oily. Otherwise would recommend.
S.
The Junk Burger was quite amazing. Not sure I liked the chips but the Southern fried fish was incredibly good! Large selection of craft beers and wines for any drinker. Took a while in the kitchen, but definitely worth the wait (was about a ~30 min wait and we got in at 8pm so I was very hungry). Loved the Kiwi Pale Ale, was a lovely refreshing flavour with local hops.
S.
Really friendly service, cute and comfortable seating and the food was excellent!
ا.
A little bit overhyped.. The grilled snapper was on point and staff are extremely nice.
But the starters were so small portions and expensive..
There are other better options for seafood in Napier with bigger portions.
N.
Fantastic hospitality. Thank You Agnieszka. Looked after the whole family so well. Delicious kaimoana (seafood) all across the menu, perfectly seasoned and prepared from the starters (we had gently fried squid and an amazing prawn taco) to the mains (classic gurnard and chips with a mexi-fusion southern fried fish burger and champion bouillabaisse). Great wine range too and a couple of perfect Wellington beers to remind us of home, at the end of a perfect HawkesBayCation. We’ll surely be back.
g.
Food was nice. Price was bit high for me compared to quantity. so giving 4 stars.
R.
Fantastic food. Everyone chose a different dish on our table of 6, and I honestly could have enjoyed every one of those meals.
Lovely friendly service as well.
R.
Amazing food deffinetly worth a visit. Only downside the toilet lock waa broken and I got stuck in the loo 😂 pretty embarrassing but I can laugh about it now and it won't stop me from going back.
N.
Would highly recommend this restaurant! We had the fish and chips, fish was so light and perfectly cooked and the Pumpkin and Cashew Korma with the fish of the day and that dish was simply amazing. Staff were very nice and helpful!
J.
The food inside is completely different to the café look of the exterior. News has got out and a reservation is now necessary! Menu is interesting and changes , as the server just back from a few days off had not seen one of the new items on the menu. Seating can be hard but the sheepskins draped over the chairs give the place a cosy look & feel.
The food is well prepared and delivered nicely, flavours are subtle but not overpowering. Altogether a good dining experience.
B.
Nice cozy place on marine parade. The interior is quirky, but still manages to maintain a nice dining ambience. With the theme being sea food, we went for crab croquettes and an octopus dish and I was very happy and impressed with it. Other dishes impressed with flavor as well. Ideally I'd like to have given 4.5 stars as they only had a few beer styles available.
p.
Nice place to have dinner, give it a try
T.
The chips were fine, but the fish was outstanding - crisp, perfectly cooked, very fresh. My partner had the vege cirry which was very tasty and had an outstanding tempura spinach on top.Our B&B hosts recommended this restaurant and it lived up to our expectations. It specializes in fish dishes and the 2 we had were fantastic....the grilled catch of the day (ling cod) and fish schnitzel. Delicious.
T.
We enjoyed a delicious dinner on a Sunday evening in Feb 2020.
If you love seafood, go there! All the menu was based on seafood products cooked really well. The atmosphere is "charmante" a mix of bohemian & nautic - thanks to its open kitchen and friendly staff we had a wonderful evening.
A must see place to visit ! Well done!
P.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Decent prices. Good wine selection. You couldn't ask for anything more. If you want some fresh seafood in Napier, you gotta get in here for a supper.
D.
The service was excellent and the food delicious
K.
The fresh gurnard was amazing! Whether battered or crumbed, you cannot go wrong with the fish n'chips here. Your authentic, British style, wrapped in paper, served with tarter sauce and malt vinegar!
Y.
Great ambience, delicious food. Make sure to try their bouillabaisse
S.
The freshest seafood, perfectly prepared. Fantastic service and a great location. The owners are setting the bar sky high for an amazing experience. Came for lunch and had to come back for dinner so we could try more of the menu. Will absolutely be back. :)
B.
Good place to meet a friend. Vegetarian options- not a lot, but some. Decent food, beer, and wine. Pleasant on a winters evening, even though almost no one there.Went for late breakfast - the coffee and food was excellent - great surroundings, got a park outside, cold day but cafe was warm inside.
N.
Super friendly staff and a welcoming/lively atmosphere. The seafood is fresh and offers great twists on flavours. If you enjoy seafood and find yourself wondering around in Napier, definitely check this place out.
A.
A group of 8 of us went here for dinner and wow, what an evening. Great service from friendly staff that really send to enjoy their work. The food was amazing. Great flavors and fresh seafood combine to make a tasty meal
M.
Great service. very warm and welcoming staff
Food excellent. Love the fish and chips served in newspaper parcels. Excellent gluten and dairy free options loved the eclectic decor
W.
Love the food! This place was soooo busy, my partner and I went 2 days in a roll and still couldn’t get a seat. So reservations are definitely recommend. This place is a dream for seafood lover! They combined common seafood with different flavours which I was quite surprised to see they work with a lot of the Asian ingredients. The only drawback is the space in the whole restaurant is quite small. Not the most comfy place. Overall I loved my experience there.
E.
Had great delicious fish and oysters for dinner!
M.
The reviews are spot on. We shared the grilled fish and the bouillabaisse both were outstanding. The reviews also stated it is advisable to reserve a table. Again spot on as the place is very popular even on a Sunday night.
B.
The food is well price and I would describe the quality as reasonable, and the quantity as a little on the lean side. Last time I was there I got fish and chips and got one smallish fillet of fish. As a result we have not been back and have found other places more to our liking.
s.
It's highly unlikely that you will ever come across a better Fish'n Chips elsewhere in NZ. Super crunchy batter on the fish that stays crunchy even after cooling down.
Ingredients are top grade, sashimis are aged well, oysters are juicy
Reason why it's not a 5:
One of the grilled fish was blue nose with Kimchi topping, the Blue nose was great, the Kimchi topping didn't taste like any Kimchi I've ever had and it was pretty gross on its own, it was mushy and way too funky, Kimchi is supposed to taste refreshing.
The chips can be improved, I think people are willing to pay more for better chips.
M.
The best seafood restaurant I've ever been to. Always fresh seafood, delicious choices, large variety from sashimi to deep fried. Always friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We actually changed out travel plans and arrived a day early just to be able to go to Hunger Monger.
S.
Great atmosphere and truly delicious food. The pasta in particular is done really well and their take on a tiramisu is one of the best desserts. Only downside was overcooked clams but could of been a bad night
D.
Just one word - amazing! Food was so fresh and flavorful! Keep doing what you're doing because it's simply awesome. Thanks for a great food experience! Will definitely return when I'm back in Napier!
K.
Excellent service! The food is fresh and of very good quality! An unforgettable experience, congratulations to the whole team ...
H.
Fresh seafood served simply. Good list of local wines. Excellent service. Clean restrooms. Nice atmosphere of diners having a wonderful meal. Definitely worth recommending and coming back to.
D.
They were very accommodating. I walked in not realizing that I needed a reservation. Instead of turning me away they aloud me to share a large table with another solo traveler. The salmon was some of the best I've had so far. I would recommend to anyone.
C.
Agnieszka and her team are a lovely bunch - fast, efficient, friendly, funny and professional. Every time we arrived at the Hunger Monger Seafood it was like coming home to visit family. We tried almost everything on the menu and one dish, wether starter or main, was better than the other. Also the wine recommendations perfectly matched the food.
They created quite a few lovely evenings for us during our stay in Napier with their unique atmosphere. We are really looking forward to our next visit there. <3
A.
Don't know what's better there - the heavenly food or the lovely service. We had a selection of very delicious starters and a wonderful main each and although we just got a table close to the kitchen (it was quite warm and maybe better to sit outside) we enjoyed to be there as we may have missed the lovely and attentive service of Susanne and her lovely polish collegue. Not only the well chosen food but also the wine recommendations made this evening a very special day in our visit in New Zealand (guess we found our favourite wine there). Actually it didn't only make our day it made our stay as unfortunately NZ weather and circumstances treated us not very nice so far. Would say this place is a "must have been" whenever you visit Napier.
G.
I was looking forward to have lunch at Hunger Monger. Very nice food, beautiful setting. Only 4 stars as one staff member was very unfriendly. She got upset because we decided to sit next to the window front and not where she had seated us. I understand that this is sometimes not easy but the restaurant was empty and we asked her colleague if this was ok! She made us feel not very welcome and complained about our decision at other staff members...
J.
Delicious food and cute atmosphere. We just had drinks and snacks but we'll definitely be back for more. The calamari and crab gyoza was wonderful, and the meals we saw other patrons eating looked great. The decor was so cute and great location by the water.
B.
Loved it, staff were friendly and helpful, food was brilliant.. Definately try the salmon doughnut!! A nice atmosphere and the owners are genuine and caring people.
Thankyou for a great night out
J.
Beautiful food and lovely service. We shared a sashimi plate and the tuna was delish. I had tagliatelle pasta with clams and it was absolutely delish. Hubby had hot smoke salmon risotto and it was beautiful too. Highly recommend.
R.
Went to the restaurant while in Napier for the July school holidays.
A seafood only restaurant with brilliant food and desserts at a reasonable price. Located on Marine Parade. The hosts were really friendly and helpful. The interior is very rustic and comfortable. Family friendly. My 5 year old daughter especially loved the place as there were a lot of old school games provided such as snakes and ladders and ludo, which we could play while waiting for the food.
We had dinners on 2 separate days and a lunch and have tried all of the dishes. Would definitely recommend as the best place in town.
F.
Incredible GF Fish n Chips!!! 😍
D.
Nice little place, with an interesting menu and good beer. Service was a little slow - drinks after food. Also, the fish tacos were poorly laid out, requiring messy assembly.
Great for interesting seafood.
l.
Echoing many of the previous comments we came back the very next night! We found the service to be exceptional even during the extremely busy Art Deco weekend. Our waiter was attentive without being annoying and very very observant replenishing water and napkins without being asked. The food was beautifully presented, fresh with such interesting and unique combinations dazzling the palate. It was very hot but there was outside seating .I think ceiling fans are in order, keeping not just the customers cool. Beer was good but would have liked to have perhaps seen some cocktails esp during deco. Overall would return again.....and again!
J.
Awesome food and great service. We stumbled upon this great little spot after hunting around for lunch.
Very impressed with all the food. Fresh and tasty. The staff were great too
m.
Wonderful food! Nice and cozy place. If there's just time for one restaurant in Napier, this is what I recommend. :)
Y.
If you come to Napier you must try the best restaurant for seafood 👍
J.
Delicious 5* seafood, probably the best in Napier! Thoughtful, original fine dining menu with a casual atmosphere, and so tasty that we ate there two nights in a row. Perfectly prepared, consistent with caring service. The Thai green curry mussels and their creme brulee with dried cherries to die for. Booking essential.
T.
Very nice food and very good service, great view.
K.
Our 2nd time here - food is always excellent - service and staff very friendly and helpful💗
Place is always busy - pays to make a reservation💗
J.
Fantastic! We got takeaway as they were unfortunately fully booked. All made to a high standard. Would highly recommend!
k.
Just had lunch at Honger Monger, my very first visit and I will definitely be back. FAntastic service and the freshest fish cooked to perfection.
The restaurant is understated and has a great vibe. It has become my new favourite thing!
C.
Mixed feelings about this one!
It is busy all the time and it took us three attempts to book a table for 6 with voicemails being left and no call backs. When we did finally get a booking, we turned up a little early and was abruptly told to go away and come back on time.
However, when we did come back, the same waitress was very pleasant and chatty so maybe we caught her at the wrong time previously. Menu looked great and we all ordered starters and mains. There was a fair delay between meals but I guess that allowed our first course to settle. The food was good, nothing to rave about though.
One thing to note was the smell of fried food on our clothes the next day. Don't wear your posh clothes unless you are willing to dry-clean them the next day.
All-in-all, an ok meal. Would't rush back though.
S.
Mediocre at best. The Seafood Chowder had bones in it ! Informed waitress who then said repeatedly that the chefs "do their best to remove all the bones but can miss a few". Regardless not ok.
p.
Outstanding food.
This is good food not fast food.
G.
I love Hunger Monger. Delicious food cooked beautifully by first class chefs and served by lovely front of house staff. HM has a unique charm and great quality at very reasonable prices. Highly recommended.
R.
Can't say in words how great the food and service is here. Book in advance as it always seems busy. Excellent meal! One of the best meals we have had EVER!
R.
Took a while before they took our orders, and unfortunately the oysters just ran out when they got around to it. Sashimi plate was great, but the seafood chowder barely contained any seafood so was very disappointing.
T.
Food was fresh and awesome. Service was excellent. But please call to make booking. Its always packed.
M.
Came here. Got pretty busy so it is a great idea to get a booking. Got an order of sashimi, tempura prawns, scallop and mushroom dumplings, a halloumi stick and a plate of. Thai green curry muscles.
The sashimi was delicious. I've never been a fan of raw fish but it came out really good. It's fresh fish. We had salmon, trevally and tuna. The dumplings and halloumi came out together. The sauce that the dumplings came with was amazing. The prawns were good which came with a satay sauce. And the muscles were delicious. Had a bit of a kick to the curry but its curry so it should have been expected but it had an amazing flavour.
In short. Absolutely amazing. Tasted amazing and the decor was unique and interesting. If you like seafood definitely give this place a visit.
T.
Had a lovely night here with my wife, I had the Fish Taco which was extremely tasty. And I don't even like Seafood. Some nice craft beers, friendly helpful staff, what's not to love?
M.
The best place if you like seafood, some of the on the menu were superb l stronly recomend this restaurant for dinner!
P.
The grilled fish was beautiful! And also the black lager was great! Meals were out fast and the staff were very friendly
t.
Must make a reservation before coming at night. And pretty worth it.
C.
We have had the most wonderful time here and cannot recommend this place more. Excellent service, delicious (and very reasonably priced) food, and all-round absolutely fantastic time!
C.
We ate at the Hunger Monger and absolutely loved it. Such a treat to have seafood done so well! Also I got to try a wine I've never had before and likewise my partner had his first Art Deco beer. Entre and main for me was the chowder and salmon. Both were very tasty. I wonder though why in NZ its seems most restaurants have only a sprinkling of small bits of seafood in their chowder? My dessert was the single cheese platter with Brie cheese. This was a let down as there was no savory component to the platter, only very sweet preserves which completely overwhelmed the cheese. Good produce just unbalanced flavors. My partner enjoyed his calamari, salmon and de-constructed tiramisu (which I tried and it was so yummy!) BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL if you don't want to miss out.
C.
My second visit to Hunger Monger. You need to book because it's a really popular place. I ordered the same as last time, the grilled fish on kumara mash with miso. It wasn't quite as good as the divine meal I had in March, but still very tasty.
A.
Strong balanced flavours, international quality food, great service.
T.
A good kai moana. Solid all round. Would recommend strongly to all folks who love good seafood and expansive delicious flavour journeys!!
원.
Awesome! recommend to all!!!!!!! ♡
Why do I live in Auckland?.. so sad...
J.
Really good atmosphere, super friendly staff. Kids loved it and we had Clam Chowder and King Prawn Spagetti. Food looked good on the table next us too, so will be back for sure! Solid 9/10
F.
Excellent food, atmosphere and service. A real class and character of its own within Napier.
D.
A must for seafood lovers. Service was friendly, helpful and attentive. Food was beautiful. Wine and local craft beer excellent. They do everything well. Go.
B.
Incredible atmosphere, decor and a seafood lovers paradise. Will definitely not hesitate to recommend this awesome eatery and hope to return next time we are in Napier.
F.
Went a few Sundays ago and OMG. Pacific oysters, fresh as, small, sweet, plump. Mixed sashimi plate, organic south island salmon and local snapper, so so good! Fish cakes, well balanced...deeeelicious. Everything so fresh and seasonal. Tempura prawns, came with tempura kumara and sweet white french beans. Best lunch in AGES! Going again this week!! Service was great, casual and simple atmosphere, Hawkes Bay needed this :)
H.
Great, relaxing atmosphere. Delicious fresh and tasty fish dishes. Friendly and professional staff. All makes for a very enjoyable experience.
C.
Delicious food, excellent service, great ambiance. Wonderful fish and seafood dishes. We enjoyed our meals so much that we returned the next night.
J.
Absolutely amazing food and atmosphere. Must try for seafood lovers. Will definitely be back.
C.
Although I have owned a home in the Bay for 20 years (but recently returned from overseas), a friend (from Ak??!!) introduced me to this gorgeous little slice of heaven! I highly recommend... EVERYTHING!! There are two seating times- 17:30 to 19:30 (I think) and then to 21:30ish but don't be put off. It is SO worth it!
a.
Great food and a good environment. Definately would come again when in hawke's bay.
F.
What a great seafood Restaurant! Staff is very friendly, the interior is amazing and the fish is absolutely fresh. If you are in Napier you can not miss that!
H.
Absolutely packed on a Monday, but the food was excellent and the staff were friendly and attentive. Well priced, too, considering much of Napier's dining scene is priced for tourists.
M.
Great Seafood served simply and at it's best. If you are to try Octupus once, this is the place, only better if they backed off on the spicy sauce and celebrated the Octupus which was perfectly tender..
D.
Had lunch. Squid and then the Pan fried snapper. Both excellent. I little too much! Total full. Very difficult to get a booking at night at the moment. Highly recommend.
J.
Hunger Monger serves both classics and more adventurous fare. Those who wish to explore a little should try the Cook's Strait Octopus (which is the best octopus I've had in my life) and the fried squid (which is cooked to a perfect, supple tenderness.) Those who do not will be pleasantky surprised by their fish and chips, fish burger, or by their Salmon over coconut chard.
W.
Sadly not as good as the last time I came here 2 years ago. Staff is still amazing, but quality and quantity of food has declined. It is simply not worth the money they're charging.
M.
Best fish n chips I have had scince moving to New Zealand. Looking forward to next trip to Napier. If only other fish restaurants were half as good.
A.
Fresh and tasty fish excellent
J.
Best restaurant so far in Napier. Creative, talented menu. Every dish perfection.
A.
Glad we waited for a table. One of the best meals I've had in NZ. The desserts are awesome. Try the liqourice creme brulee. No regrets
R.
Harry Potters invisibility cloak....
Service was average at best. Waited 15 minutes for a second drink, then Waited 20 minutes for a dessert menu. Then went and asked for one, then waited a further 15 gave up... Paid the bill... No-one asked how our meal was.. And went and bought ice cream at the supermarket. So very disappointed.
K.
Wow. So tasty!!
S.
By far my favorite restaurant in Napier , very homley feel and wonderful hosting , love that they only use Hawksbay sourced ingredients, very well priced but essential to call and book well in advance , looking forward to going back in 2019 .
