We tried to book a restaurant on arguably the busiest day of the year, and no one was answering their phone. So we took a punt and tried to walk in somewhere but were turned away by many. That is until we got to the Thirsty Whale. Even though they were bursting at the seams and we had to line up, the owner was amazing. She was so friendly and accommodating and got us a table almost immediately even though it was so chaotic with people trying to get in, many without bookings like us. The staff were great and the service was amazing given how busy it was. We were well attended to and our meals came out in a good time. The meals were top quality and very generous. Well done to you!

Very nice and welcoming environment. We turned up without booking but they kindly looked after us. Pizza were yummy and so were the cocktails. They were not only very thorough in checking our vaccine passes but also checked a couple of us who looked younger than their real age to ensure that serving them with alcohol was ok. Very good experience. Thanks Thirsty Whale!

Cannot fault this place. Atmosphere, food, drink, price and service were second to none. The place was exceptionally busy being one member down apparently but everything was still top notch and we got a great start upstairs right by the balcony to watch the sunset.

We dined here last Fri and Sat nights and both nights the food was truly amazing, I had steak and it was cooked to perfection. Sheree worked fantastically well under so much pressure with trying to seat everyone who arrived without bookings, she looked so calm and made everyone who arrived feel at ease in knowing that they would be seated as soon as possible. I commend all the staff who work there as they all kept the place running like a well oiled machine.

A nice restaurant on the wharf. Dined here with my husband and parents on a family trip to Napier. Very nice staff moved us to table with view without us asking. Although very busy because of public holiday, and food a little slow they were very quick with drinks and checked on us. Food was good.

We had the most incredible dinner there on Sunday night, January 23rd celebrating my 60th Birthday. The food was off the scale !! Especially the lamb shanks, the pork ribs and the seafood extravaganza. We live in Wellington and trying to find a reason to come back to the Thirsty Whale. Our waitress for the evening was amazing - Cherie. ( Sheree ? ) She topped our great experience off with her hospitality, helpfulness and promptness - wish we encountered more like her every time we dined out. Thank you guys - you will definitely see us again

Didn't book a table but the manager was able to accommodate us with a bit of manoeuvring tables. For a Wednesday was very busy. Four of us and we all enjoyed our meals. We will be back Have been there a few times and never once been disappointed.

My husband and I came here with high hopes and expectations based on all the great google reviews but were highly disappointed. The seafood extravaganza was bland and lacking flavour and super dry. The chowder was basically just cream. Even the pizza garlic bread was a disappointment. I had the ice cream trio for dessert which was fine, but the fruit is definitely an unnecessary item in this dessert! We really didn’t think it was worth the 90 something dollars we spent here. It has so much potential and I hope changes will be made to make this place better than what it is now!

Had a great meal and service on 4 Jan (at what looked to be the busiest time and day of the year). A table came available upstairs looking out over the marina and the team voluntarily offered to move us upstairs so we could enjoy the view. Thanks to all the staff.

Customer service was lacking - we had to wait quite a few minutes to be seated, and food took 5 minutes to prepare but over an hour to arrive. The portion size of the ribs and vegetables were quite small, however both were prepared well. The caesar salad had a generous portion of meat, and whitetail fritters were also good. Might be worth going back to when they are not busy.

My partner completely loved his ribs - rib sauce was incredibly tasty and the meat was falling off the bones! My T Bone was alright, it was not particularly flavoursome as I expected but it's ok.Thoroughly enjoyed my dessert of Mango Cheesecake, super fresh and yum. Great Christmas atmosphere in the pub.

Hungry? This is the best place to go! They serve variety of food that you can choose. I had their Seafood Chowder which was very nice and creamy, Baby Back ribs that was huge, 200g Steak w/ egg, the Seafood platter and the super yum Venison Burger. ♥️ I’m from Auckland and I don’t mind travelling for 6 hours to dine here.

This restaurant is well worth a visit. We had a large group of 20 which they catered for perfectly. Drinks and meal came promptly. Meal's were well priced. Would recommend this restaurant and the beautiful surroundings.

We didn't realize we had to make a reservation to eat at the thirsty whale, how ever they let us in but said we had to be out by 6pm (we arrived at 5.15pm) We felt we got stared at alot by staff because of our short window which resulted in us taking our food home to finish off eating including our childrens. It's a beautiful setting in a beautiful spot but make sure you make a reservation before arriving!!! Food was good, would possibly return one day with a reservation.

I went there for the Boxing Day evening Dinner, with my family. It was a very good place to have a good meal, have a conversation, and watch whatever was on the big screen, which was Cricket in Australia. Aus Vs Eng in the Ashes. I definitely enjoyed my meal which was Braised Oxtail. A little hot, but enjoyable. Great Staff to handle the drinks and the meals.

Decent pub style grub with efficient service. It might not be obvious from the outside but this place is HUGE. We turned up around 7pm for dinner. The host seated us outside and after our first drink came to check if we wanted to move inside which was really nice. Meals are as you would expect for a pub, decent portions and there is a good selection of beer.

This restaurant is stunning. We were in Napier for a couple of days and chose to come here with friends. The place was chocka but we could not fault the service or our meals, despite us being quite particular. It’s a really great place to meet friends for food and drinks. The elderly maître d’ (or owner? not sure if she was the owner) seems more interested in filling tables than providing excellent customer service or making people feel welcome. She is a bit harsh and rude and if I didn’t know the place was awesome I would be really put off by her. If she didn’t work there or if she changed her tune, I would give this place five stars. (EDIT: This visit was on the 29th of October 2021 at 6pm)

It was a pleasant surprise! I have passed through lots of times and tonight we decided to have dinner there. We had a beef burger and a vegetarian burger. Both were beautifully presented and super tasty! Then for dessert we had the strawberry cheesecake, it was divine! Super recommended 🌟

Very busy with mother's day. Meals arrived over 1 hr after ordering, with 1 sent back due to coldness. Still cold, so owner (who was very apologetic) sent replacement meal at no charge. Quality was good, although roast beef was tough. Another long wait for desserts (we had to ask where they were); so yet again the accommodating owner gave them to us at no charge. Management good but maybe junior staff could do foundation training to improve customer service ie, how are the meals, sorry for the delay etc. If I wasn't a local, I probably wouldn't go back.

Nice food but timing was off, as one burger was cold and the giant plate made the chip portion look even smaller than the hand full of chips that was given. We had a group booking on a very busy Saturday night after the rugby. We were told as we arrived that there would be a 40 minute wait for food, and would have a couple of complimentary breads delivered to our table to get us through. We didn't mind as we were happy to wait. We had fantastic communication through the night and the food arrived sooner than expected and we all had very different dishes. All 14 of us were very happy with our dinner. We had a wonderful waitress looking after us all, and she did a fantastic job. Very friendly and helpful. She even managed to get a meal replaced, with no fault of their's, just a mix up from our table when ordering. Thanks you Thirsty Whale staff for an awesome night. Will definitely be back.

Sunday late lunch. Restaurant wasn't hugely busy. Food was very average. Ribs were dry and had next to no meat on them. Salad was wilted and very wet for some reason. Loaded fries tasted as though they were pre made and reheated in the microwave. One waitress was very nice, the rest seemed like they didn't want to be there. They were also having a staff meeting in the restaurant only a few meters away which seemed unprofessional. The staff didn't have uniforms which made it look like anyone could walk in and work there.

Then at the restaurant, we hadn't been waiting very long when they came to our table, apologised for the wait and gave us complimentary garlic bread. The meals were really good, so good we went back the next day for lunch!

Called from motel 5mins away and sheree said come on in. All the staff were good. Loved the food(,I had fillet steak with the red wine jus). Sheree is clearly passionate, and looks like it rubs off on to all the young ones that served my wife and I. Made note to call well in advanced next time staying or passing through Napier so we can get a window table upstairs, with that as well it really is worth booking. Keep it going sheree and team. 👍🤠

There was a little bit of a wait time - waiting to be seated and for our food to come/order to be taken - but honestly I didn't notice or care. The restaurant has an incredible atmosphere and the food was absolutely excellent, I wouldn't have changed a thing about it. I'd recommend booking ahead of time to make sure you get a seat as it is extremely popular and also one of their cocktails! The staff were lovely and very attentive. 10/10

Wow. Amazing place for the family to dine. Staff were friendly and helpful. Especially our waitress, Brenna, had to deal with a mucked up order, a broken wine glass and a toddler who couldn’t sit still, and handled it all with a smile. Food was fantastic and the menu had so many choices it took me a while to choose. Service was quick and meals were fresh, hot and plentiful. Definitely coming here every time we visit the bay. The food was okay, not amazing. We were seated inside (even though we reserved outside seating?) and it was a bit dark but still nice. The music wasn't too loud and it created a nice atmosphere. Food took quite long to arrive, maybe an hour, but it was a busy night so we understood.

Our visit started really good - attentive wait staff, good booze. Got out appetizer and it went downhill from there. Looong wait for the mains, we had to remind the waitress in the end (the appetizer came out quick - which was actually a main, so I don't know why the mains were slow!!). Ordered another glass of wine with my meal, and the waitress forgot it. My meal was half done by the time I asked for it. I watched: it was poured, waiting at the counter and they just plain forgot. It was incredibly hard to get anyone's attention, and it wasn't particularly busy. However, the food was good. My family really enjoyed the seafood platter. One last positive:. It's one of the few restaurants I've been to recently that didn't echo so bad as to make conversions almost impossible (as is common with "trendy" industrial style restaurants). My advice? If it's not a busy time give 'em a go. If it's busy, unless you have a lot of time up your sleeve maybe give them a miss.

The food was good. Before ordering we mentioned to the waitress that we had to leave at a certain time, and asked how long the food would take. We’re told 25 minutes MAX, pretty standard. However after 40 minutes and reminding the waitress that we had to leave the food only just came out.
