D.This is honestly one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. The service was impeccable and it was really refreshing to see the waitresses happy in their work. The food was amazing and there was no long waits between courses. I would highly recommend this friendly happy restaurant
D.Been here twice now and will go there more too! The staff are so welcoming and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. Especially the head lady - wish I new her name. Fantastic service. Both times the place filled up fast, might pay to book ahead. Good menu to choose from, with a few vegetarian options. Good wine options. Reasonably priced. Decor clean and tidy. Food was delicious both times. This time we had the vegetarian gnocchi dish with side of garlic veges and the roast beef special, plus sticky toffee steam pudding. Yums!
P.We went for an evening meal, staff were good, food was nice but not much of it, the over all size of the single lamb shank meal including veges that accompanied the meat wasnt worth $28.
V.We had dinner at Flames on 40 two nights in a row! We almost tried everything from their dinner menu. The best part was when their restaurant manager came to our table and gave us samples of the wines we were looking at ordering and gave us some really great tips which one goes with each type of food! It’s fine dining alright but the food is really delicious. The staff were all pretty amazing too! A favourite in Nelson City. They’re just about 15 mins away from Nelson airport.

S.After a long day tripping around the region enjoying the sun sand and the odd cave decided we need a good meal. Flames being the closest won out and we traveled the 10 car parks from our room to the restaurant. Food was on point and we were full to the brim on completion. Highlight was the amazing Son and Mum team that keep our little ones entertained while we were able to have dessert. With great food and amazing service totally deserve the full 5 stars.
L.As a ex cafe owner, I never do reviews. Disgruntled staff members can tarnish u under disguise. Tonight my family went to flames, we often do when we can organize the family! Big family hard 2 do!. Our wee unextended tonight was extra special. Monday night, so a bit quiet. & not normally a night we would socialise. Dad & his partner were late due to his hospital appointment. No grumpy staff! Dad got amazing news. I appreciate your professional attitude. Service, food. Monday night and its quiet!!! Staff know they are going to get a early night, peeps are late....... so annoying! Your staff never showed it 4 a minute. Thank u. We are punctual, 2 the point of over the top! Xxx bless u. My dad has terminal cancer. He's never been late once in his life. It may have been only 30 minutes. Problem, I get it. Bless u all xxx

B.Absolutely amazing! I dare to say that everything on the menu is delicious - good portions, great flavors and reasonable prices. A very funky little place in a great spot in Nelson. You can choose to sit outside by the street, inside where it's all happening or out back in a little courtyard.

The Host was so lovely and friendly... the other staff were also friendly... we cannot fault the staff.
The seating, wait and the food is a different matter. They did have 2 biggish tables come in off the street without bookings just before we arrived (my husband rung up to see if we needed to book); so they were aware that we were coming. And yet still placed us in the same seating area as the 2 big groups. We would of preferred to have sat in the quieter area.
We had a 10 and 13 year olds.... whom were starving.... as it took 43 minutes for our food to come out from time we ordered. A bit baffled to note that the vegetables were a separate cost to the meal, considering the price of the meal. I would of been quite happy to pay a couple of extra dollars to the main meal to have veges... not as an extra.
Mine said blazed carrots... found 3 very small ones under my lamb shank. The lamb was lovely and tender. Hubbys ribeye steak was chewy and the chips didn't taste like chips - more boiled potatoes and lightly browned on sides. Definitely no crunch to the chips. Daughters sliders... she ordered due to the size that the waitress stated they were... TOTALLY shocked to what she received and what we expected. Sons chicken burger was probably most accurate one according to the menu and expectation, yet the bacon was very dry and over cooked (not crispy - over cooked). Like another review... we love salt and pepper squid due to the taste and crunchiness... this was tasteless and soggy and some chewy.

I am sorry... if the food and seating was a great as the staff manners... I wouldn't hesitate to give a 5, as the wait was understandable and they did apologise a few times for the wait.

R.Fantastic restaurant, with very welcoming staff, great menu and equally good servings. We dined with 3 generations and everyone was satisfied.
P.Simply top notch; waiting staff friendly and accommodating, and the food was faultless - and us foodies are hard to please. Roast dinner; beef cooked perfectly with a nice layer of carmelised fat, perfectly puffy yorkshire pud, and jus reduction nicely underpinning rather than overpowering the meat and veg. They are now our go to restaurant whenever we can make it.
