M.Came for a birthday lunch on a lovely sunny day and loved The Boat Shed Cafe. It was humming, so we didn't get to sit out on the deck, but no drama inside is good too, with the big windows you've got the same views. I liked the narrow deck where you can be served from the windows behind you. Would be an awesome spot for a couple drinks and snacks. The service was fantastic, our server knew her stuff and was attentive and happy to help. The food was great, we shared pretty much everything which worked well, and that way got to try more dishes! The wine list is extensive, and we had a couple bottle of delicious wines. This truly is an iconic restaurant in Nelson and definitely well worth checking out.

Don't get me started on the Main I'm still thinking about it. Eye fillet medium rare, perfection! Potato Gratin, roasted hassleback beetroot, fresh Asparagus and to finish off the dessert of many offerings, cheesecake but not as you know it. This cheesecake is on another level and accompanied by brandied cranberries and raspberry gelato to name a few. Try it for yourself ❤️

Was a little nervous due to my dietary difficulties impacting the experience (dairy and peanut free), but they asked from the outset and made every effort to work around, to ensure all of my food was free of my allergens; they even made a dessert specially for me that was different to the set menu!
Food was amazing, all beautifully cooked, wait staff were brilliant, nothing was too much to ask, everyone was so friendly and always checked in. Courses were ideally spaced out and perfect sizes. Was a little nervous to try some of the shell fish items but they were fantastic! Only course which was slightly delayed was the dessert, but again, due to my requirements - was fantastically communicated however and the alternative was unbelievable.

Salmon bite fairly tasteless, market fish ceviche nice but not wow. Goat cheese croquettes however were divine. Flounder and beef sirloin mains were lovely but you have to buy sides on top of that. Staff were lovely - very attentive and no issues. Just no wow factor for us but nothing wrong. Limited wine by glass menu. But what is there was good. No Dietary options noted on menu.

We were fortunate to be seated on the veranda and watched the sunset... breathtaking. Food was delicious. We had the flounder, Ōra King Salmon Tartare, Halloumi | apple, chipotle, kumara, granola, honey, beetroot, walnuts, figs and the White Chocolate Cream | summer berries, mint, berry gelato. meringue. Our waiter was so friendly, articulate and very enlightened on the menu. Can’t wait to return to Nelson and return to this gem.

A.The Boat Shed Cafe was first choice for a birthday dinner and did not disappoint. Fantastic food options starting with Coromandel oysters, moving on to Beef cheeks, Rack of Lamb and Scampi. Absolutely superb. Wine and drink's list will not disappoint and service to match the high level of food and wine options. Highly recommended.
J.What a treat! Sun was shining, and the water was almost calm. We had a lovely waitress, and the food was amazing. I had the Snapper and my partner had the Steak. Great flavours and the purees were delicious. You can tell the difference eating proper FRESH FISH!! Not fresh frozen.....hahaha. Only issue is parking, but.....it is good to have a wee stroll after a meal, and enjoy a beautiful sunset. Highly recommend.

A.Stopped in on our way past for breakfast, and I’m so happy we did! The cafe was busy but they managed to find a spot for us. The pancake was delicious and we really enjoyed the beautiful view over the bay

A.The Food and view from the Boat Shed is stunning. The Halloumi and Gau Bao dish were my favourites. The food came out fast enough for our 1 hour lunch meeting and the serving team were very accomadating hosts. I will definately eat here again when I am back in Nelson.
G.We’ve just had a lovely meal. The halloumi was lovely. The beef huge (medium rare is more rare than medium). The lamb is tasty and pavlova wasn’t even slightly mini. It was bloody huge.
P.Great restaurant! While it's a pity that they cut back on the seafood, our fish, mussels, and cockles were amazingly prepared. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. The price is a tad on the higher end, but you pay for the quality. Do take your time and come here for lunch or dinner.
v.My favourite place in NZ, we went for lunch once and immediately booked for breakfast the next day. The place has a lovely nautical theme and a 180 degrees view on the sea. I strongy recommend booking a table outside to get the best view. The food was delicious (especially the fish) and very interesting. Desserts were great too.

J.Beautiful! Just been for dinner with a friend, after looking through the menu, we choose the trust the chef option which at $75 per person isn't cheap, but it's good value considering it's 5 courses! We requested no seafood as I'm quite fussy about the seafood and this wasn't a problem.
The courses kept coming and were just a lovely mix of flavours - and a lot of goats cheese! I think we had cheese with almost every course lol. Well presented meals, a mix of things that's weren't even on the menu, and a few things that were on the menu we wanted to have but choose to trust the chef instead.
we had a rotation of 3 servers who were all great, had great timing constantly bringing us plates and cuttlery and always more food! It definitely felt like attentive fine dining rather than a lot of other places where servers keep coming back at awkward points offering drinks or asking how the meal is mid-mouthful.
Definitely stood out to us as a great dining experience all round.
P.s. I like to ask servers their opinions of I'm stuck between choices and these guys didn't hesitate to recommend trust the chef, and then we got desert and got a great recommendation on that, plus another staff member agreeing so that was fab that they were comfortable to help!

A.Stopped by before going to the airport to fly back to Auckland. Was abit worried we wouldn't get there in time as the cafe was quite busy but all 4 of us received our meals within 15minutes of ordering. Staff were very attentive, ambience was relaxing and food was delicious. Highly recommend.

K.We came from Auckland for a long weekend and our friends had been to the boat shed before and said we must go. We booked Monday night, turned up and was met by super friendly people and a very warm cosy restaurant on the waters edge with a beautiful ambiance.
Prices med to high but portions generous four of us ordered a mixture of foods two had the market fish one had steak and one lamp.
All meals were superb, we all left super happy.
If you are going to Nelson and want a special evening book ahead and go to the Boat Shed you will not be disappointed

C.Had a really yummy meal here last night. We hired the private room for a family event sitting over the waterfront which was lovely. Very attentive staff, great suggestions for wine and meal pairing. We got the mussels for starters which as superb and the goats cheese croquettes are really good. The beef cheeks are Devine however would have liked a bit more gravey in the plate, market fish excellent, eggplant ravioli yummy and the lamb was also highly recommended. Good selections of desserts with the waiter recommending the butterscotch pot, I got the tapioca pudding which was incredibly balanced with sweetness and tartness. Highly recommend eating here!

L.The setting and restaurant is beautiful and the staff is wonderful. The weekend breakfast was well presented but seemed a bit simple for what we were hoping and the flavor was a bit bland, but the drinks menu was quite nice. Would love to try the lunch or dinner as I'm sure they excel in that much more than the weekend breakfast.
A.Perfect evening out,Shane the waiter that served us,was one of the best I have been served by in years,with great banter. Had a really knowledgeable understanding of the menu, and the region of food in the Tasman. Food was really good,all our party was very happy with everything, and what a place to dine, we will be back for sure!

B.I cannot begin to describe to you how amazing this place is. We came for breakfast with three other friends and we all got different things and we were all closing our eyes in satisfaction with each bite. 100/10 would recommend. Pricing was great and the wait staff were doting on your every need.

B.Arrived before 4 for a late lunch and upon arrival the young lady wasn’t very welcoming. Turned around to colleagues with a not so impressed look and says late lunch. We order right away and our beers were forgotten about upon delivering food. We ordered ceviche, scampi, bao buns, chips, and whitebait on sourdough. Meals were nice but not special. The chips and whitebait were our fave. Ceviche tasteless. $130 spent for a late lunch that was pretty forgettable. Can’t see what the hype is about. *The gentlemen gave us a free takeaway coffee to say sorry about his colleague forgetting our drinks.

A.Holy smokes... I can honestly say, I haven't had a breakfast as good as this in all my time in NZ (3 years).
I ended up going for the big breakfast which was to die for, the portion size wasn't huge, but the quality of it was exceptional.
The poached eggs were amazing, the duck fat potatoes were gorgeous and the sausages were easily the best sausages I've had in a long time.
I can assure you that I'll be coming back once more whilst I'm still in Nelson. Phenomenal!!
p.We went for the chefs choice, 6 small dishes.. which were all perfectly presented and taste sensations. Highly recommend the good ol boat shed!!

A.This is the best fine dining in Nelson, hands down. Always an amazing experience. Had the chef’s choice and wine pairings.
E.Called to book at 5 pm on Wednesday, got told the closest availability is at 8:45, I refused. 15 min later I called back to agree for the time but another girl who answered the phone said that there is a space for 7:45. When I arrived at 7:30, they kindly sat me down on the side of the restaurant that was quite cool and shady with a sweet harbour view.
I’ve ordered a gazpacho soup, arrived quite bland but with a good sourdough bread slices, beef carpaccio came on a small plate, cut thick and far from how it should be done, a piece of lemon would also be a good addition. I’ve mentioned that to one of the girls in a kind manner, she agreed to pass on a message to the chef.
I am used to good food and travelled all over the world trying things of different levels. For what it is I think it’s a bit more hyped up than it should be. I haven’t tried the mains, the menu seems quite good though.
However, they have lovely waitresses! Girls are really sweet and friendly and they serve local awesome beers so go try!

C.I dont normally review anything but this deserves the time and effort! This was the BEST dining experience I have had in a long time. I had high expectations and much anticipation and there was zero disappointment. We were a table of 4 and we all had the 'trust the chef' menu followed by dessert. Delicious food, bursting with flavour and great to have a vatiety of lovely dishes brought to the table. A beautiful intimate location with stunning views. Service brilliant. Highly recommended and compliments to the chef from each of us! I cant wait to go back. In fact, I wished I had gone there for our anniversary a couple days prior. A must do - make a point of booking ahead for a seat over the water.

k.Amazing view sitting on the side of the cafe over the water. The food was good but the grill the bacon was cooked on was dirty as it left black oil on the waffles. The customer service was refreshing and I enjoyed chatting with them.

R.A great place because of its location over the seaside - outside seats are a must when booking. The food is stunning and the best thing to do is order a selection of different dishes and share with others so you get to taste them all. One item I.e goats cheese souffle wouldn't be enough for one so treat them like tapas and order more. Prices are reasonable given the quality of food and presentation.

As for the food, always go for trust the chef and receive 5+ courses the chef chooses.
The menu is seafood based and I would describe the dishes as experimental, something you won't find elsewhere.

R.Very pleasant dinning but you need to book an outside seating don’t assume yourll get one. The food is very tasty small amounts allow you to choose more varieties to eat. The potato Ducheen and beans were over cooked and potato was not great texture . My beef short rib dish was beautiful nice flavours my husbands steak was perfect and melted in his mouth the whitebait was lovely but not keen on thick chewy bread to accompany it, I think a very thinly sliced light toasted w olive oil or butter would hv been better. The service was very good and we were happy with that. We found the hard wooden seats very uncomfortable to sit on think they need a cushion this actually caused us to leave without dessert coz our legs and bums hurt . It’s quite expensive but they do make nice flavoured food.over all though A nice restaurant in a gorgeous position over the water front with tasty food and good service

E.I have eaten in this restaurant dozens of times, and it was the venue for our wedding dinner. It has always been Nelson's best. I've not been in a year, and 100% of the staff outside the kitchen have changed. While this perhaps has to do with a period of closure for storm repairs, this much staff turnover just cannot be properly managed. The food and the location are as good as they ever were, but we were brought both the wrong food and the wrong wines, asked three times (including twice by the same person) if we wanted tap water or sparkling. Our waitress (the only kiwi on staff apparently) was unfamiliar with every dish we enquired about and "doesn't drink wine" - an odd hire for someone who is in part a wine salesperson. The new policy of refilling water glasses is not a winner for me - it takes a supremely professional waiter to do this without interrupting conversations and in my view it would be better to allow diners to fill their own glasses from the bottle on the table. We had a great time anyway, but with this many blunders Nelson's top spot may soon be elsewhere. While prices have risen here, the likes of Hopgoods (Nelson's other premier establishment) are experimenting with Mon/Tues discounted set menus, albeit not in the high season. The Boat Shed would do well to look over its shoulder!

A.The Boat Shed Cafe used to be my "go to" restaurant in Nelson and then the cafe was damaged in a storm. I have just been back and if anything it is better than it was before.
I was greeted and shown to my table by the Luka and served by Charlotte. Our table of four elected to try the "Chefs menu" with a twist in that one of our group was a Pescartarian. The staff coped well with this and our group had a fantastic night.
It is now my go to Restaurant once again.
L.Oh so nice to be back at the boat shed for brunch my favourite meal. Eggs Royale. The perfect mix of flavours, eggs...soft but not too soft, deliciously cooked salmon...a hint of crisp on the outside and only just cooked in the middle, hollandais sauce and a smattering of rocket. Great service as usual and extra attention to distancing to make us all feel comfortable. Thank you.

I.If you want great food and relaxing sea front atmosphere this is your kind of place. It is NOT cheap but you get very friendly service and you will not be disappointed by the food. Try the cheese scone- its to die for. The mushroom on toast for breakfast is one of my favorites. You even get to see and sometimes talk to you chefs if you want.

J.Delicious pan-roasted groper/grouper. Fantastic, friendly and helpful service from a waitress from Cornwall whose name I didn't catch. Also the sourdough with Neudorf olive oil was so delicious that we went and picked up some of the oil on our trip to the surrounding vineyards the next day.
C.What a wonderful Nelson restaurant located by the water. The food was first grade as was the service and location. The mussel chowder and bacon soup was the best I've had. Fish (snapper) carpaccio was excellent as was the pork belly. This place was recommended by two Nelson locals. It's easy to see why. So pleased to have experienced 'The Boat Shed'.
R.This place was surprise to us. From the outside, it looks a bit dumpy and non-descript. The inside however, is elegant and nicely appointed. The food is delicious, the wine choices tasteful and delicious, and the view to die for. You will not be disappointed.

Then flounder the wines matched beautifully after the flounder we had lemon sorbet to cleanse the palette, at no time did feel rushed the sevice was superb each course had a matched wine which was explained to me. Finished with scotch fillet and braised broccoli. Then we had the cheifs choice on dessert. Make sure you book in advance if you are coming to Nelson this is my top recommendation for places to go.

J.Delicious pan-roasted groper/grouper. Fantastic, friendly and helpful service from a waitress from Cornwall whose name I didn't catch. Also the sourdough with Neudorf olive oil was so delicious that we went and picked up some of the oil on our trip to the surrounding vineyards the next day.

T.The dishes tasted terrific and every table in the restaurant offered scenic views. Definitely a great place to stop for dinner on the coastal road.
