I have eaten in at the centrally located city premises, bought take out and had a delivery to the free house across the road. Every time the food is exceptional. The aroma of spices cooking has made my mouth water. The flavours are blended beautifully. Service has always been great and delivery quick. I love the quirky old building that houses this restaurant . Eat inside or out a positive dining experience every time.

We went for meal here recently. We had the tandoori kebab which was delicious. My husband really enjoyed his main meal so we went back the next night, which is a rare occurrence. We had the tandoori platter again which was again lovely. We both had the main meal my husband had had the night before It was completely different and pretty disappointing. The flavour just wasnt there, so i am guessing it just depends on who is cooking

Visiting Nelson from Auckland and had a craving for Indian food, was pleasantly surprised by this Indian eatery. Great quality indian food, Decent service and most of all "VALUE" for money! not overly priced. There is plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy a nice social dinner! Do try their Platters for starter.

Awesome Indian food! This place really does it well. A nice atmosphere in either the indoor or the outdoor dining experience. Staff were good, local beverages were very good and the food was great. All the breads were exceptionally well done - and the curries were amazing. A great place for families, friends and even couples to enjoy a nice night out (if you are a couple and want to be away from the crowds (or kids) then the booths outside, down the side, are perfect for that romantic date night curry.)

We ordered the Kesari kebab, Fish masala, Lamb roganjosh and kheema naan . The food was delicious and came in good portions. The drinks are reasonably priced. The outdoor seating space adds a nice touch and the fish masala was an absolute delight.

Definitely edible but nothing to write home about. Food was way too oily and buttery to feel decent. Grilled mushrooms in yogurt sauce were the highlight. Don't expect authentic flavors but a rather toned down spiciness for western pallet.

Set in a lovely wooden old house in Nelson’s town centre, easy to find by following the incredible fragrance that emanates from their kitchen. A fairly decent selection of popular entrees, curries and breads however no biryanis and a few side condiments missing. All in all a pleasant experience and wonderful prompt service. Great for group dinners and takeaways.

Great butter chicken! I asked for spicy and it had a kick but not too hot. Can’t complain about the food. The ambiance felt a bit too upscale for an Indian restaurant. I guess they have a reputation to live up to and it shows with there accomplishments written next to the sign of the restaurant. I recommend this place for anyone in the mood for Indian food in Nelson but the vibe in my opinion can be off putting.

Indian cafe is ALWAYS fabulous, they're so consistent, never been disappointed. The food is amazing, big servings, quick to arrive and really well priced. Last night me and my partner and child left overfed and we only spent 50 bucks. Last night they set the high chair up perfectly, brought the baby some poppadoms for the wait, and a little fork and spoon. Baby was delighted with the attention. The waitress made sure she was welcome and pretended she didn't care about the baby mess.

The Indian café serves great food but what makes it 5 star for me is their willingness to let you bring your own takeaway containers. If you're across the road at the free house you can take plate across and get them filled up. Awesome too see ♻️

I know this is a best Indian restaurant in nelson and my favourite as well. Evertime i love to go their for dine in but recently i experienced twice something wrong with food, First, i had over burnt tikka and Second, yesterday i ordered meal med to hot but food was very hot n spicy.

Great place to dine. From the Lunch menu we had the lamb and Dahl. It would be nice to balance the proportions. More sauce. Too much rice and little bowl of sauce. I found it too small. Wow! Highly recommend the banquet, $27 per person and got absolutely treated to so very delicious entrees, mains and desserts. Excellent waitress too who was very helpful even for the baby at our table. Looking forward to coming back.

Not typically a food reviewer but this was the best Indian I’ve had on my couple month trip in NZ so far. The Vindaloo was spiced just right and the paratha was awesome. Service, setting and location couldn’t have been better. I’ll definitely be back if I’m in the area.

I had a great experience when I dined at The Indian Cafe. Staff were well presented, friendly and attentive. They weren’t pushy - they were relaxed yet efficient and helpful. Food was delicious although my ‘medium’ dish was more ‘mild’ but I’m not complaining because I’d prefer it that way rather than the other extreme! We've been a couple times for dinner with a friend. This last time we had a vegetarian sharing platter to start and it was just beautiful! Curries have always been tasty and no skimping on the meat. Naan bread are huge - I need to remember to order one between two people. For a dinner out it's really good pricing too.

The best indian food in the top of the south! Freshly cooked, many eating options and you can eat inside or in a new outside area! Kids menu avaliable (smaller portions) and you can book a table (recommend if you go after 6pm) or just arrive without booking if you arrive before 6pm.

Generally, The Indian Cafe offers excellent food and service. Our most recent visit, however, was marred by slow service to the extent that we had to go to the bar and request the drinks we ordered. Our Lamb starter from the tandor over was also overdone, less tasty, and no longer tender.

Good atmosphere at this place, near one of Nelson's carparks, and with options of inside or out front or in the back area, best in the evening. The food is well- prepared, tasty and hearty, and it seems fresh, and flavourful. We shared 4 curries, some breads, and drinks. This place has a great reputation, and is long-established, and while its name suggests just a cafe, it is a full on restaurant. Also, quite a neat programme using old rice bags to create shopping bags, and raise money for Indian charity.

Good atmosphere and great place to meet friends - both intentionally and by chance as alot of people go there. Their lunch menu is set at a good price, but is incredibly bland, as in almost no spice, evidently catering to the lower end of the NZ palate. The lamb in the rogan josh was cooked to perfection, but had little spice that this normally aromatic dish has :( and my friend's butter chicken was in the Kiwi style, not authentic Indian, and had zilch spice. However, they do make delicious tandoor garlic naans! So, good for a meal with others but not if you're after authentic complex spicy Indian (and I don't mean just adding chilli powder for more heat). Wait staff were attentive while giving plenty of berth.

It's one of the best Indian restaurant in Nelson and Richmond, both restaurant are equally good, they serve amazing Indian dishes and chef over there are so good that they will go extra mile to provide you best possible experience, last but not the least Gibson, she is one hell of duty manager. Front of the house is amazing, they have very polite behaviour they are soft spoken they make sure that guests are enjoying their meal or not, they have one separate section for family dining where you and your family members can go and have private family dinner this way you can enjoy the family time and along with that you and your family members can also enjoy the amazing and most authentic Indian cuisine (starters, main course and dessert ) if you are a beef lover you must try beef Madras and beef vindaloo (if you prefer your dish little hot than average) these two Indian dishes are my favourite and I highly recommend to any body to go there and taste this with garlic naan which goes very well these dishes overall it is well worth experience, khudos to whole team thank you for amazing dinning experience if I will come to Nelson, I will visit you guys for sure.

We had an exceptionally good meal at the Indian Cafe. The Tandoori Mushrooms was exceptional. A Vegan dish called Dal Fry turned out to be a great version of Dal Makhani without the cream. We also had Palak Paneer, which was good, but took a back seat to the others. A big bowl of rice came with the mains. Some very good garlic naan completed our feast. This is a great place for Vegetarians.

It didn't live up to the hype we had heard. After asking the server - twice - to have our entrée arrive at the same time as the mains, it still arrived early, leaving the rest of our table to watch as our entrée got cold while we waited for the rest to show up. As for the meals, 18 dollars per small-bowl of curry followed with some rice was okay, but far from being amazing value. Usually as a couple we can have an entrée and share a main like that without going hungry. We found it just wasn't quite enough. Atmosphere was nice, and seemed cozy enough.

So here’s our story. It’s Sunday evening and we’ve just driven up from CHCH. Check in at our Hotel on Trafalgar Street and hit the city to get a bite to eat. Wander round for a little while but rather disappointed at the number of places either closed or empty (a sure sign). So we’re heading back to our hotel resigned to the fact that we’ll be eating there. We pass through the west end of a large car park and half way through we catch the wafting aroma of indian cuisine. We follow our noses and end up at “The Indian Café. We were not disappointed! The service was spot on and the food, oh so tasty. The Naan was really fresh, the raita to die for and the two mains of chicken and lamb were both delivered with a thick potage of indian flavours - awesome. All up we had an exciting, enigmatic Indian experience at the eastern end of the carpark… and what’s more they were in the Entertainment book so 25% off - Whoopee.

We had a take away and collected. We took it across the road to the pub, the free house. We had a good 30-40 min wait. No problem there as that's the time they had specified. My main issue is with the curry composition. The menu allows a choice of heat level, hot medium or mild. This choice available when ordering must be added to the curry by use of chilli oil or other additional flavours added before its dished up, not spiced into the original recipe. Is the curry recipe hot or mild? On top of this, the lamb in both our curries was clearly cooked outside of the sauce for what ever reason of kitchen convenience. All together it was ok. But lacked some depth of flavour, maybe due to muddled assembly. Last but not least, using bright green luminous sugar coated green cherries in a peshwari naan is; not appetising....
