Do not pass through Oamaru without stopping in Star and Garter for the best meal in town - and perhaps the best meal you've eaten in New Zealand. The menu has straight forward classic NZ fare that is made from scratch and served by the most delightful folks. My husband ordered the sensible pan-fried blue cod which was delicious. I ordered the lamb shank which was slow cooked to absolute perfection in red wine which later was perfected into gravy. The mashed potatoes were fresh and outstanding in their texture and the vegetables were tender crisp. ps: do not miss out on a side of their home made cole-slaw.

Awesome food and warm vibe. Mushroom stack what we ordered was amazing, juicy mushroom with bread explored a forest in my mouth and the fried salmon cooked perfectly which crispy skin and juicy salmon two different taste satisfied all I want. Definitely, we’ll back for it.

With most of the town closed on Good Friday we made an early reservation. Whilst busy the staff were polite and knowledgeable. The menu is great - full of favorites your mom made, ok we never had lamb shanks as kids.... The food was fantastic and filling. We'll be back for sure!

A beautiful restaurant with great food. I'm happy I went with the medium portion which was already generous enough; the large meal would definitely have been too filling. Highly recommended and will definitely go again the next time I'm in Oamaru.

Me and my wife popped in for a quick meal on Saturday night. Place was getting very full. My wife got the chicken enchilada and i got the Blue Cod. Very nice and will be going there again next time we are passing through. Only thin i did have a bit of a laugh was i ordered a Jameson whisky and lemonade and was in a very large glass. So much Lemonade you could not taste the whiskey. But the food was great. So people do go there for a very nice meal...

First class service and the food is to die for. I can't recall having a better fish chowder that what the Star & Garter serves. Lovely pleasant interior and the location away from the main street gives it relaxed feel. Definitely recommend.

Great little place for lunch, extensive menu of delicious food at a really reasonable price, highly recommend if your in Oamaru. We had the lunch time special of fish and chips and a sea food chowder. Huge hot portions and very filling. The deserts are also amazing! Staff friendly and service quick. You can park outside for an hour for free and it’s right across the road from the Steampunk HQ.

The seafood chowder and lamb were really good. I wouldn't order the ham again since it was more of a cold cut heated up with a very nice sauce. I'd choose pork cooked the same way.

Great place for dinner. Food was delicious and service was fantastic. They were busy but still took time to make sure you were enjoying yourself. Highly recommend if your ever in Oamaru.

The staff here are absolutely fantastic! I come down at least once a year from Christchurch and they have never let me down. The food, atmosphere and staff are all top shelf and I can't recommend them highly enough. Very accommodating, friendly and professional (even in the face of rude, unreasonable people during a very busy time). Great quality food and great portion sizes. Lovely, warm and friendly atmosphere. All for a more than reasonable price. I look forward to dining here everything I come down to Oamaru. Thank you kindly team!

Friendly attentive service. Good choice of lunch food even though it was 2pm. Fish of the day was local elephant fish served with veges or fries. Warm room on a cold day. Art works for sale on the walls, and jams, pickles, soaps. Interesting wall of wedding photos. A staff member settings up for the evening bookings had to block my table but she apologized.

Great little place for lunch - would love to see a few more vegan-veggie options, but the Portobello mushrooms were lovely. My friend really enjoyed her blue cod too. Lots of yummy veggies! Nice to see the drinks were reasonably priced.....and good alcohol-free options that weren't more expensive than their counterparts!

My husband and I had a fab night. The food was delicious and the atmosphere cosy and friendly. Portions large eventhough ordered medium. Received service to table in timely manner. We feel we received 5 star service. Definitely recommend and cant wait to return to try more from menu.

Size is large, it must full all of u. However I don't like blue cod, which just the British foods -fish&chips, flavor is simple and feel oily.

The chicken enchilada was well made but there was a sweetness throughout the meal which was off putting. The mayonnaise/ vinaigrette was a commercial variety, the name I don't know but it was way too sweet. When I questioned the lady who appeared to be in charge sh assured me that no sugar was added to the meal. I suggested that they make their own salad dressings but was told that they were very busy and didn't have time to do that. I would have preferred a container of good olive oil with salt and pepper as I usually have at home; so simple. Service was good in a pleasant environment but of course the food is a very important part of the experience.

Excellent all round family restaurant. Superb Roasts with succulent meats and yummy vegetables and 3 sizes to choose from. On-licence with a great selection and all at an affordable price. Nothing flashy, just great food and friendly service.

We Dined in on Friday the 2nd ( Easter weekend ) the place was absolutely chocker and yet the staff took it all in their stride and provided top class service. Gotta pay respect to hospo workers on public holidays. The meal was absolutely delicious it was served hot in a timely manner staff checked on tables to make sure everyone had drinks and where happy and enjoyed there dinning esperance. I wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend to friends and family and will diffently be more thay happy to return next time we are in town
