The Blind Finch is a must visit bakery in Ohakune. With tasty sandwiches on sourdough bread, pies, burgers or savouries to satisfy your taste buds. There is surely something for everyone. We were not able to try out their burgers this time, but will surely be back next time we are in town

One of the best burgers I have had. Juicy, flavourful and reasonably priced. Only issue was the lack of a side portion of fries. I'd be more than happy to pay 3-4 dollars for a side of fries rather than 8 for a two person serving.

I ended up trying there OMG burger and fries. I phoned and placed my order minus cheese, advised of a time it would be ready. Got there early, order on time. My burger was tasty, hot, yum. Eyes bigger than my belly, fries nice, but should not of order them, I was stuffed from the burger. Second night I ordered the same burger, just as nice. Friendly service. Would try again.

Wife: the only burgers I've ever had that rivaled Ferg in QT - has now become something I look forward to coming back to Ohakune for! Yuss!! Also - love the customisation options when ordering online however, a word of warning - do not be fooled thinking the burgers are small like other places are, be cautious when adding too many extras or your burger will end up like hubby's one did - HUGE! Husband: yum as aye.

Probably better than any pie I tried in Auckland, especially the classic mince/cheese pies. The gourmet pies were good but the classics are what I'd suggest. This is exactly what a small town needed, a great combination of burgers (with vegan options) and a bake house. Even without any competition the quality was excellent.

The Saigon burger was better than anything I have had in Burger Wellington! The Bahn Mi was very tasty as we marveled at the Hapuawhenua viaduct on the Old Coach Road, so we went back next day to get lunch provisions again and the Volunteer Coastguard sandwich ably sustained me on the Marton Sash and Door track at National Park. Will be recommending your food to friends!

Falafel seemed to be the only veg option but many burgers offered alternatives. Long ish wait times bc it's so dang popular so order in advance. Takeaway only. Things sell out quick so get it while the gettin is good.

The Burgers were fantastic! We had a Goldfinch buttermilk chicken burger and a beef burger as well. 5/5 for the burgers. The chips sadly were terrible. Soggy and lacking flavor 1/5.

Tasty burger cooked with real woods! We chose this place because of the 5-stars review from others. It’s under decent price and tasted very good! Takes about 10mins for our two burger ready, the OMG burger and the lamb burger are very nice! Very juice and tasted very well! Highly recommend the fries as well!

Great service and interesting decor. Burgers are varied and have something for everyone. My Burger of hummus was very nice and the kamikazi chips had a very nice combination of sauces. Well worth it if you feel like a burger.

The burgers here are the best around the area but with my most recent stop, they converted their dining area into a bakery. We stopped by just before heading up the mountain to grab some food. The had sandwiches to order as well as pastries. I tried the almond croissant and it was ok. The center was slightly underbaked but it did have a nice crispness to it. The almond that leaked out from the side was nice and crispy but it didn't have almond spread into it. It was almost like a pan au chocolate. My friends who had the sandwiches said they were really good and they were wanting to head back afterwards to grab some more.

Look this is a hip little place in a hip little town. Really decent burgers that don't burn their really great beef patties to a crisp. Their loaded fries are also great we had those calorie loaded Caesar chips and the chips were perfectly crispy cooked. This has become our place to eat whenever we stay for a snow trip, we almost had it three meals in a row! LOVE the burger varieties and their truffle fries are seriously to die for! Look forward to some new "country" inspirations! Do expect to wait ~20min for table for dinner though, but it is worth it!

Absolutely awesome burgers and shakes! I tried one of their lamb burgers with roasted peppers and some of their spicy fries, and it was great. My wife had a New Zealand style burger with pineapple and beets, and she said it was one of her favorites. The shake we got was really good. It was very smooth like a really heavy cold cream.

Really good food! We came first for breakfast and returned the same day for dinner 😁 Coffee is strong and the breakfast sandwiches had great flavor combinations on incredible sourdough. The Ohakune Volunteer Coastguard (salmon) was good, lots of fish and really enjoyed the capsicum jam. Partner enjoyed the Bacon Buddy and the smoked tomato jam made it unique. Came back for the Stallion burger and poutine fries. Again it was the sauce, the pesto and Napoli sauce were outstanding and the whole burger was a jucy, delicious mess! Fries were crispy and real good gravy 😋 Burgers aren’t as big as Ferg’s in a Qtown but we can see why they call this place the Ferg of the north island, very tasty.

The hype is real. If you are ever in Ohakune, make this place your #1 must visit, followed by Whakapapa and Turoa. I opted for a no bun Stallion and it blew my mind...can only wonder how amazing their bun option would be. Pity, I managed just one visit...def going back again sometime. Staff is very friendly.

Burgers were good but the fries really lacked anything of merit. It was one of the busier weekends of the year so I don't blame the staff, but it was crazy. Long waits, food arriving at very different times. The chips had been sitting on the counter a good ten minutes by the time the burgers were added and they were handed to me. A small cosy restaurant a hundred metres out of the main Ohakune town centre towards the mountain offering an egg focused brunch menu and upmarket burger focused casual dinner menu. Quality food with some interesting alternative flavors. Worth a try. Coffee okay.

Hard to review a place like this as I only tried one burger and one beer... Pros: Great, friendly service. Didn't wait too long (10 minute wait at 7.30pm Thursday night) . Nice atmosphere inside. Extensive selection of burgers and beers. Very clean place. Cons: Fairly pricey burgers ($12.50 for a "OMG" 'small') . Expensive beer (440ml garage project can was $20) although it was tasty (Garage Project Aro St) . Meat patty was lacking seasoning and overdone on outside. Willing to give it another go, although I have some constructive feedback : Do less burger options and do them well/better. Lighting outside could be cosier/warmer, lose the bright LEDs and get some fairy lights ✌️

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I enjoyed this burger (the finch) more than any burger I tried in Auckland - and I've tried many. Stop by if you're in the area, you wont regret it!

Best pies I've ever had! Pulled pork, blue cheese and mozzarella blew me away. At $8.50 I almost went for a cheaper pie but it was worth every penny and some! Then, wanting more, the friendly & charming server recommended the beef cheek pie which was as good as if not better than the pulled pork pie. Seriously raised my standard of what can be expected from a pie. Will be coming back again and again. Thank you so much everyone in the kitchen and the lovely servers too

This is a must eat place in Ohakune. Pies in the morning are the best in the country (yes big call) with interesting flavours that are just delicious. Evenings you have to return for the burgers which are exceptional with fresh ingredients and interesting flavours. Fries have too many options which we are slowly working through, the truffle ones are a fav along with the poutine. A little pricey in some aspects in my opinion, but they have some interesting, original and good tasting burgers and chips! Depending on the season, you might be in for a bit of a wait. They were kind enough to let us know for dinner. However went back the next morning and ended up waiting about 15mins for 4 coffees and there was only one person ahead of me. It was busy over Easter weekend, so I'll forgive them and hope it's not a permanent issue.

We bought one the following day for the next trip and would have done the same for The Crossing the next day, but unfortunately left before they opened! Reasonably tasty food but a few areas for improvement. We were told there would be a 20 minute wait for our order but it ended up being 45 minutes and there is not much space to wait inside. While we were waiting we witnessed the chef belittle and patronise the poor staff members who were busy trying to fulfil the many orders. This had left a sour taste in our mouths before we even got the food. We also saw part of our order sit out on the counter for over 5 minutes getting cold while the rest of the order was being fixed after a mix up. The mix up resulted from chicken being accidentally used in a vegetarian burger, they corrected this by pulling out the chicken and putting a vegetarian patty on the same burger, strict vegetarians beware. The burgers were ok but nothing special, definitely not helped by how cold they were.

I really enjoyed dining in in this restaurant15 months ago. SInce then, understandably, in order to cope with Covid lockdowns etc, they have decided to convert the inside dining-in seating area into a bakery. So, FYI, there is no longer a dine-in option, it's takeaway only, although there are a few tables out on the front verandah (but these are mainly used, I gather, by people waiting for their takeaways). The burger menu seems much the same with great vegan options.

I went here with my family for the first time and we all liked it. The burgers are fairly priced and very tasty. My daughter ordered the milkshake which we shared and it was the best milkshake i have had in a long time. The amount of fries for the price was super! The place is very nice looking and situated in a quiet part of town. It is definitely worth a try. I do recommend stopping here after a long day of driving.

Absolutely amazing burgers that we haven't found anywhere else! Tried the Vietnam and Indian burgers (forgot the names) and they were both absolutely delicious! My partner has coeliac disease and this placed catered well for this, and the staff were very knowledgeable of the precautions that had to be made. We were impressed with the service! Don't let the looks of the place deceive you. I would definitely recommend this place to any one travelling to/through Ohakune!

This isn't just an excellent small town restaurant, this is an excellent restaurant period. I had a burger+beer+fries. The burger was an exquisite stack of meat, bacon, and fried potato. The fries had okonomiyaki sauce, which I had never had before on fries. It turned out to be an excellent topping to fries. And to finish it off, they had a large selection of craft beer, choose what you like. The next time I'm on the north island I will be giving this place another visit!

Was reasonably busy but when I came through on a sunday. when I ordered, the chef in the kitchen started cursing when the ticket orders came through. I understand that a chef can be under stress but at no point do you do that in an open kitchen with costermers waiting for their food. We waited for quite a long time and the bun was soggy, falling apart and very messy although tasted good. I have definitely had better and fresher food for such an expensive price tag.

This is not your average kiwi bakery; the pastries and sourdough are exceptional. We would definitely return for them. But it's unfortunate to have such a small area in which to view the menu and order and no inside seating. Perhaps the small outside seating area could be protected by clear plastic screening and the outdoor heater could be operational. I realise it's a matter of cutting costs to stay afloat but I would have loved to see the place as a sit-down burgeria with the bakery in its own space with tables to sit and enjoy a coffee and gourmet sandwich. If we're ever in Ohakune after 4pm, we'll be back to try the burgers, which a friend highly praises.

I was in Ohakune on vacation in January 2020 when we ordered take out from The Blind Finch. The lamb burger was very average and the fries were less so (soggy unfortunate potatoes). My fellow diners were also not impressed with the beef burgers. I would give this place a skip if you have another choice, but it would do in a pinch.

Really good burgers! After having lunch here I ended up going back again for dinner the same day. Good craft beer range too. A must-go if you're in Ohakune. Note that it is small, often busy, and you can't book. Factor some waiting time into your visit - luckily there's a well-stocked bar that can keep you occupied.

I ordered a gluten free bun and the waitress asked if I was a celiac, such a great question to ask as it doesn't happen often enough, however I am not. It was a delicious bun and burger. Had the vietnom burger (small size) with no bun and truffle fries. It was absolutely amazing. The truffle fries were lightly flavoured with truffle seasoning and a delicious truffle aioli. The burger was fresh, a bit hard to eat when ordered with no bun, but perfect to dine in with a knife and fork. Staff very attentive and friendly. Will return in a heart beat.

A cool spot to stop for lunch or dinner in Ohakune. A little building just outside of the main Ohakune strip, the only thing that has stopped me from going more is their irregular hours. The restaurant has a nice open atmosphere and the staff are always friendly. They have a ton of craft beers and are often fairly busy. The food has been very good each time I've went and each burger is made with different ingredients, so it's easy to go back and try something new. The beef and chicken USA burgers, the OMG, and the El Fuego are all super tasty! The only thing on the menu I didn't care for was the poutine fries - simply because they cheaped out on the amount of cheese and gravy. Being Canadian, I have a fair bit of experience with poutines, and although the Blind Finchs' wasn't the best, I can appreciate them having it on the menu here in NZ! Expect a bit of a wait during peak hours, as the inside is not overly big. Overall a great place for a meal!

I've been here a lot over the past couple of years, and it recon the issue is that there few other options. Currently waiting 1.5 hours after being told that the order would be 50 minutes. Totally conflicted because a better system would make this place soar.

I've been to a fair few overrated NZ burger institutions (ferg and ekim) and was nervous this would be yet another. Was pleased to find however that this was not one of them, the burgers, sides and beers were fantastic. We ordered The Ali and The Turk, both were delicious with the perfect ratio of toppings, sauce, meat and bun. The meats were great quality and well cooked, sides (patatas bravas) were also great. I was also surprised as I usually find some themed style burgers to be uninspired and gimmicky but The Turk was fresh and flavourful, it was good middle eastern food in its own right. Highly recommend, lives up to the hype.
