Reviews of Le Café
M.
Went in for coffee and tea for takeaway, said they didn't have a strainer for the tea for takeaway so ended up just getting a coffee for my dad. Went back again the next day to try their lunch, they told my dad they were too busy to make him a steak sandwich (there were more tables open than occupied) and that it wasn't lunch time yet (10 Min prior to lunch) and then brought me tea with a strainer that they didn't have yesterday...? So a bit disappointing, just felt like they didn't want to instead of them not being able to. Food was otherwise lovely and it's a nice spot to look out onto the waterfront.
D.
very nice cafe with a great view of the harbor and the sound. Delicious cakes.
Very pleasant background music and very acceptable prices. Great live music on a regular basis.
Best café in town!
D.
Really nice atmosphere. Great little Cafe overlooking the Picton harbour. Good service, great food and awesome coffee. We even scored a complimentary sample of the home made chilly sauce.
J.
I gave 5 stars not because La cafe deserve them but to get my point at the most relevant review about how rude the staff were when we arrived today.
It was 2 pm, the place was empty and they left us standing at the door!! Three staff members were talking amongst themselves and not one acknowledged us! We awkwardly asked if they were serving and the older guy made a joke about us having beer sticks or biscuits, tapping the jars in a condescending manner.
We took a menu and made our own way to a table. We sat there for ages before we realised we needed to go up and order.
The staff all need a lesson in customer service. They were quite honestly rude and smug! Not one hello, smile, word or thank you at anytime.
The location is beautiful but thats it.
They forgot to charge us for our coffee and we went back to pay and he didn’t as much give a continental. No thanks, no nothing😡
I still can’t believe in these testing times their service was abysmal !!
S.
Delicious 'wild sheep' burger, good beer, German jazz. Just a really pleasant lunch.
p.
Well stood there waiting like someone's who'd being ordered and not picked up...
Staff didn't even look up and acknowledge we where there... skills guys
I asked are you still serving. It was 2pm
Well said the scruffy looking chef
We have beer sticks tapping the jar in front of him or biscuits tapping that Jar...
Wow rude much...
They have to be French my next thought...
If it wasn't for the fact we where so hungry and the beautiful view we would moved on
Has to be the worst place I've ever had the displeasure of eating at

Service and food were amazing, and would give it 5 stars but I thought the salad or wok veges should be included in the price. Meal options were either full size or entree, and the full size was just right, not a huge plateful, but definitely needed the addition of salad. Staff were really friendly and efficient, atmosphere was great too.
C.
Fab service and super yum french toast overloaded with goodness!
D.
Nice place by the sea. Indoor outdoor feel. Really nice smoked pork and veg. Staff very friendly, and efficient. Le Cafe gets the thumbs up from me. Also very clean and tidy.
M.
Fabulous food. Gracious host with great knowledge of local wineries. Highly recommend!! Photo from table looking out as the interisland ferry departs.
J.
Prime location in lovely Picton.
As well as a gate way to the North Island,
Picton is a nice destination in its own right.
R.
One of the very best if not The best fish dinner I have ever had in NZ....this cafe is so rustic and unique, and it is genuine, not a put on like so many other places. Almost everything is home made using fresh local produce, they don't even make a song and dance about it because it's just them and the way it's always been. Lecafe is also the music capital of Picton and a huge supporter of local arts!
R.
Great flavors, seasonal foods. The figs and goat cheese Crostini were fabulous as were the humus plate and the homemade mushroom ravioli.
G.
Amazing view of the waterfront
Friendly staff, service a bit slow
Cakes were very nice, walnut tart a highlight
C.
A lovely staff, and beautiful place, wine, food. For an overnight stay in Picton. There was a live band playing in the park. Which made it the perfect place to sit snd enjoy.
I.
Very nice mussel chowder. Great place to sit in the sun with a wine and watch the view.
P.
Great coffee, view and efficient staff.
J.
I had the avocados for breakfast. Really tasty. Only bettered by the coffee. Really appreciate it when people ask if you want a double or single shot.
Service was friendly, location is amazing. And open early on a Sunday morning.
S.
A fabulous dining experience with great views. We had breakfast here: porridge for him and bagel with cream cheese and jam for me. Very good coffee. Then we returned for lunch: mussels for me, raw fish for him. All very well made and presented. What a joy this place is!
D.
Every year as I drive up and down the country, I stop here at Le Café. And every year without fail, they serve me the best damn coffee and present me with the most terrible customer service.
I love it. They are so bored and uninterested. But serve me exquisite coffee. It's comical.
See you next year.
P.
Great place to relax with beautiful view on the bay. Coffees and desserts are really good at reasonable prices! 😋
D.
Always good service and delicious food. Nice coffee too.
G.
One of the top three cafes in Piction with excellent food, service and coffee. Has a great outlook and seaviews. Highly recommended outside on a sunny day
N.
Le Cafe is a very good option if you are looking for wine and food with an ocean view! I went on a Sunday lunch with my partner, the carpaccio and mussels were really tasty. Fresh ingredients, great wine list, live music events and even for a casual arvo coffee and cake or delicious tart. Highly recommended!
w.
Very nice coffee and a lovely view , would recommend a visit 😊
A.
Very nice little cafe. The coffee is nice. The breakfast menu portions are large. Nice amount of seating provided. Friendly staff. Did not like the chai latte though.
S.
Now called Toastie good coffee, and the toastie was excellent, you may have to wait a few minutes but worth it
C.
We came here for dinner.
Good service with delicious food
S.
Nice and friendly, pleasant staff, nice location, tasty coffee but have to pay extra for a double shot...still only $4 though. Carrot cake is okay, bit dry though.
M.
Best service in town, great atmosphere, great food, were very flexible due 6o my allergies and such a fantastic sunny view of the sounds!
B.
What a great cafe with huge selection of breads, French pastries and awesome coffee. Does not look much from the outside, however, as soon as you enter you will be surprised by the array and chic decor. Outdoor seating amongst the garden is a bonus.
J.
Amazing coffee and breakfast. Cheap and clean toilets. Perfect to rest with the best views over Picton.
E.
We were surprised there were not more people at the restaurant when we were there. Location is perfect right at the waterfront, the food was delicious, the owner was very friendly & helpful. When I was not sure if the Tahr Shank was too gamy for me, he said if I didn’t like it, they could quickly whip up something else for me. At the end he didn’t need to do so as the dish was delicious 😋
M.
Lovely place to spend time waiting to board the ferry. Great service, staff and view.
B.
Good breakfast and coffee. Nice view of the harbour, chill atmosphere and decor.
J.
Very pleasant sitting outside in the sun. Nice coffee also
P.
The place to be for the view and the sandwiches. Nice cofee and terrific walnut pie.
k.
Able to accommodate for vegans! Beautiful setting and delicious coffee.
T.
Such a wonderful restaurant! Partner and I came for dinner - food was superb, service excellent, and the gorgeous view unbeatable. The line caught grouper was fresh and perfectly cooked, dill potatoes rich without being too heavy. Dessert was lemon tartelette with Doris plum sorbet, light yet full of flavor. Wholeheartedly recommend!
M.
Great spot! Good food, excellent coffee. Wi-Fi available as well. Great place to get a few hours of work done.
B.
Our go to café in Picton. Consistent. Staff polite, but not particularly friendly.
M.
Fresh fish and one of the few places that make a great (Italian style) Espresso. Plus the views. Wonderful!
S.
Le Cafe is in a beautiful spot, the atmosphere, ambient music, food and beverages, all aspects of Le Cafe are of a superb standard. The menu offers quality food at very reasonable prices. The choice of a $4 handle or more upmarket craft beers, served fine in a glass to compliment the nectar within.
P.
Only stopped off for a coffee and small breakfast, but was brilliant quality and even better music playlist to go with it! Prime location if you want a good backdrop with your morning mocha.
P.
Good cafe with nice dishes. However the kitchen get very slow once more people arrive. Ideal when waiting for ferry. Good view of the harbour and bay.
Y.
Looks casual but the food was wonderful! Squids are very soft and delicate. Recommendable restaurant!!
P.
Hey the place gets busy. Be patient. The coffee ☕ worth the wait. You know when you need a good coffee? This is a good place to get one. Awesome veiws. Summer, Winter, yet to visit in Spring and Autumn ❤️
N.
I had a Cappuccino with chocolate which wasn't all that nice and my friend had an ice coffee which she said was terrible. But we both enjoy the pulled pork. Sorry we couldn't mark any higher on the stars as the coffee let the whole experience down..
All the best for the future. Nigel and Ene.
D.
The size of the iced coffee was small. Was asked if I wanted cream said yes had trouble finding it. The Carlsberg was nice The antipasto was delicious and the perfect size for two
A.
This restaurant is amazing! The wine list is full of local favorites and the staff were amazing and attentive. The tables are situated across from the water and the sunset was beyond enjoyable. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great service, delicious food, and beautiful views. We had the snapper and the steak and both were coked to perfection. 10/10 would come here again.
D.
Excellent coffee and the food ive had there has always been very good.
R.
Good coffee. Wonderful muesli yoghurt fruit bowl. excellent service.
g.
.my favourite place for very good coffee with a fantastic veiw
N.
Good coffee. Good food. Nice staffs. Great view. Kind of expensive!
C.
Loved the setting. Awesome food!
K.
I booked a table and paid for my son inlaws birthday lunch as a surprise, and on the intended day a staff member rang me to ask what I would like written in the card she was about to put on their table before they arrived.
Customer service at it's best. Thank you very much.
O.
Just got off the ferry and checked into the hostel and wanted a nice simple meal somewhere. Got so much more! The carrot soup and side potatoes were simple in that they weren't trying to be fancy but they were in no way plain. Full flavour and good portion sizes! Plus the late night live jazz and bar vibes made such a great experience!
H.
Got our order wrong, but did re do and gave us what we ordered. Over heard an argument in the kitchen about it between staff, which made us uncomfortable
D.
What a view! Overlooking the bay in Picton, this quaint little French-inspired restaurant provides a nice respite from walking the town all day. We tried the bagels with fish and cream cheese and two dark cups of coffee. We chose the outdoor seating area so we could breath in the fresh air, and enjoy last rays of the sun. This is a a great little stop off for a light meal and coffee anytime during the day.
K.
Wonderful food, fresh and beautiful flavours
N.
Excellent Waterfront location and delish food.
C.
A very windy day in Picton but even outside here you were sheltered from the wind. Very good prices for coffee and tea. Iced tea was really lovely.
J.
Great coffee at good price. The vibe is relaxed and friendly. The view out to Picton Harbour delightful. Best cafe in Picton.
R.
Let Cafe is the best place in Picton for lunch. Great selection of food, wonderful coffee and staff. If your lucky you'll be able to catch some of the brilliant musical acts that perform regularly here too.
K.
Perfect place to look out across the Bay, food good, service - just ok, don't really make you feel that welcome
S.
Struggled with the volume of people coming in for coffee off the cruise boat, but was well worth the wait. Excellent food and great coffee. Noted they were training up new staff member so should be all good for next visit.
A.
The restaurant gets a 5 but the bar maid gets a 10/10
M.
Delicious sandwich for lunch. Nice atmosphere lovely view out to the bay.
P.
Nice iced coffee and great waterfront location
I.
My home from home! Great location, looking out over the Sound. Great food with good beer (and wine). Service is friendly and prompt. And live jazz. What more could I want?
J.
Nice fish. We really enjoyed hearing guest musician Joanne Slagel
T.
We had the grilled grouper last night and it was spectacular. Coupled with a bottle of Middle earth Rose and a stunning vista..all in all first class.
P.
A good place to sit outside on a warm evening and listen to the live music. They had a craft beer at $5 so doesn't have to be an expensive night. We had the fish dish and shared between 2 of us quite happily.
R.
I had the Egg and Bacon sandwich at Le Cafe every day I was visiting Picton and it was amazing!!! All the other food our group had was also very good and the staff were friendly and helpful. I would definitely go back!
M.
This food and wine was beautifully cooked and presented. It was lovely but I was really hungry and it was just not enough. I had a cheese board after because I thought this would help my hunger problem but , no it was very small, nice but way to small. I wished I had gone somewhere else.
J.
Tremendous food and charming service. My fish was a perfect example of warm, generous French cooking. Slow service but with a beautiful view of the sunset it didn't matter. Highly recommended!
D.
Great cake and yummy teas with a wonderful view. And the fish and mussels are also superb 👌
J.
Wonderful cafe with professional, friendly service. The waitress even gave me the loan of a pen so I could complete my crossword with my coffee overlooking the beautiful harbour. Thank you Le Cafe`!
J.
Great bagel veggie sandwich
Great service
刘.
Food is fatty but tasty. Way overpriced bottled juices. No fresh juice. Lazy service. Great view but the exhaust from the traffic....
P.
Great atmosphere. Right on the beautiful picton waterfront.
Limited tap beers, but always a tasty craft beer on tap.
P.
Wonderful long black coffee with a slice of gluten free chocolate cake. Sat outside in the sunshine overlooking the Picton Harbour. Perfection
M.
Great coffee. Right by the waterfront. Also tried the liver fry. Everything was delicious and the coffee was great. Definitely worth it.
P.
Le Cafê has the best carrot cake in town.
E.
Perfect place to eat out. Best place in Picton to relax, talk to the manager, enjoy the harbor view and eat some of the best meals there are. Would've got it five stars if they served hamburgers as well.
R.
Nice place and staff were friendly enough. Naturally great location along the water. Didn't really rate the food though, it was ok but nothing special for the cost so I wouldn't rush to go back.
K.
Good place to go for a coffee. Situated on the Picton foreshore I am sure this has the best views in town also. The staff are very friendly and the steak is cooked to perfection
A.
We popped in here after having a stroll around looking around for somewhere for dinner. I wasn't expecting much based on the interior, but the food was amazing. My husband and I were so pleasantly surprised. In fact we count it as one of our best meals out ever. So thank you :)
C.
If I spend over $20 on some mussels and bread, I expect more than one slice of bread...
That said, the food was done well and there was a nice atmosphere and decent view. Just left a little hungry after my meal.
J.
A truly stunning meal. The roast beef was sublime and the accompanying dauphinoise potatoes to die for. Quite honestly one of the best meals in New Zealand. Also check out the bakery "le posh" nearby which makes excellent pastries (even by French standards).
O.
Cool place with good food (including vegan and vegetarian options!!) and friendly staff. There's also live music. Sitting outside you have a nice view of the harbour and the ferries coming in and out.
B.
Super moment! Probably one of the only restaurants in Picton that could still serve us at 9pm. The food was super good, the waitress recommended a local beer ... and it was very good. In addition there was a concert that night. I highly recommend !
K.
While the service is nice and fast, I don't have too many kinds words about the coffee. Cappuccinos were badly burnt and while the sign on the door claims that they use Havana beans, the outcome is very busy poor. Picton is definitely not a coffee town and this place is just another example.
G.
Excellent food and coffee - ask for one of their ginger spice cookies. You will not regret it.
J.
Average, seems like you’re paying for the location. Neither the lunch time pasta or the mussels stood out flavour wise.
k.
Not amazed by food and after my bad experience with coffee am hesitant to order one again, but we wanted the change of scene for brunch but dont think we will be returning
G.
Food is good, coffee is fine, but the real selling point is that it's quiet and peaceful. No loud music, and a great view.
N.
Good view from the cafe, service was quick..
The food is good but a bit expensive for a regular cafe menu.. :-)
M.
It's a good cafe but has slightly alternative food selection. No fried food such as wedges or chips and not even nachos.
M.
Always great.
M.
Best coffee to take away would have rated 5 star except it took 15 min and didn't appear particularly busy
C.
Good place for an afternoon beer, spectacular view picton harbor.
A.
good service and nice food.
A.
Average food for the price, slow service. Great coffee!
P.
One of, if not the best coffee I've ever had (long black, Cappucino). Amazing service.
Einer der, wenn nicht der beste Kaffee, den ich jemals getrunken habe (long black/cafe creme, Cappucino). Super Service.
L'un des meilleur - ou même le meilleur - café que j'ai jamais eu (long black/café crème, cappuccino). Service superbe.
C.
Wonderful view, decent coffee, good Oka fish. Very solid little cafe by the water.
M.
Nice cafe with views over the harbour. Had very nice bacon n eggs with great coffee
D.
Good food, good coffee and amazing view
B.
Fabulous food, outstanding coffee and views to die for!
B.
Awesome food, coffee and atmosphere. Awesome frienfly and helpful staff
S.
Dissapointed this time around. Foid not like I know. New menu was standard fare unlike previously. Food could be better.
H.
Didnt mind the food. The ice coffee was so strong I sent it back. The next one wasnt much better
J.
Brautiful view over the water, location's pretty ideal, seating out for the sunnier days and the food is really, really good. Great service, great meal.
H.
Went there for a cooked breakfast and coffee. Had my wife and 5 family members.
Good service, great food.
R.
Top knock coffee (Havana) and delicious cooked breakfast.
Banging tunes and views ! Oh the views !
J.
Great coffee and views! Will have to try their food next time
J.
Could do with a clean especially outside
G.
Great Food, Awesome service and great music.
Will definitely return when I'm in Picton
L.
Arrived for lunch but the wait was over an hour for a toasted sandwich. Good iced coffee though.
P.
10 out of 10 for opening on Christmas day. Staff super friendly, meal was very tasty although one needs to share a side of veggies. Certainly go there again.
C.
A wonderful evening meal made even more special with a live classical guitarist. It was a fabulous evening!
T.
Quality food but I suck at taking photos
H.
Had coffee and toasties to take away. Sandwiches were meh, but toasties were piping hot with melted cheese and mushrooms. Great fuel up before heading to Queen Charlotte's Track!
J.
An excellent range of hot and cold food. The food menu includes a mixture of New Zealand and overseas meals, as does their drink range. Therefore, whether you are a tourist from NZ, or overseas, or a Pictonian, The Le Cafe is the eatery for you.
Also there is live music performed by a real musician.
The staff at Le Cafe are also a mixture of NZ, and overseas people, which adds to the mystery as to why people choose Le Cafe as their place to dine from 8.30am, or earlier until late at night. That's why I've given The Le Cafe A Five Star Rating.
So folks, head to The Le Cafe when visiting Picton.
Sonny Hohepa James Milner!
W.
I have a difficult diet, often making it impractical to eat out. Not only did they exceed my expectations, they did it with attention and a smile. The food was exquisite. I ate three mains.
J.
Great food and lovely staff and ambience.
T.
Been for coffee & snacks as well as for meals. Food and service were fine. Great views out over the water. Occasionally they have live music.
I.
Nice harbour side location and good (if a little expensive) food. Limited menu but if you catch it when they have live music there's s nice vibe.
M.
Try "The Hangover" meal. Delicious.
J.
The evening didn't start without a hitch; our waiter took a very long time to take our order (or bring the water). When he brought the wine, he just left it in the middle of the table...
Then the amazing piano music started. It evoked thoughts of a 1920s Paris cafe (I'm not that old to remember; it must be all the movies I've ever seen). Then of a 1950s Chicago.
And then our food came; much faster than expected. I had the Blue Moki; my girlfriend had mussels, the others had steak and Rabbit Rillette.
Having traveled in NZ for nearly three weeks (from Queenstown, going north), we've all agreed that this was the best meal so far.
S.
Friendly cafe with lots of seating and pleasant staff. The cheese toasties were a bit expensive ($8 each) but very tasty!
C.
Amazing chocolate cake and a hot chocolate on a miserable day. Outdoor under cover so you can still enjoy the amazing view regardless of the weather.
P.
Excellent food, though a bit expensive for what you get (5 mussels for $15). Still, it was a very good meal. Would drink and eat here again.
B.
Lovely open airy cafe'. Nice food and great service.
R.
Perfect coffee and service. Good strength in our long blacks and well extracted.
J.
Great coffee & service
D.
Lovely place with good food and wines, and super friendly staff. It's a shame I live on the other side of the globe, because I would love to become a regular visitor!
H.
Great seafood and white wine. We got the fish soup and the monkfish carpaccio as starters and the muscles as mains, everything was delicious!
A.
Walked in by chance and although they were extremely busy with people off our cruise ship we had a great cup of coffee. Will visit again on our return
J.
Need to grab a bite and chill in Picton before your ferry? I'd say this is the spot. They don't close for siesta like some places and the menu and beer list was just what we were after. Whitebait here too.
C.
Lovely coffee and beautiful view to enjoy it sitting on the outdoor beanbags 😊
F.
I thought it was a nice place but the food was kinda over filled we had a small sandwich and it was very full and it took super long but it was delicious
e.
Lovely staff, they were so kind and welcoming. A great pace for the family and to enjoy an ethical coffee !
A.
My favourite pick for lunch/dinner on Picton Waterfront.
All good homemade: so menu might be smaller than another place but everything taste great !
K.
Great breakfast. And great views..
F.
Gorgeous view, lovely staff, fantastic coffee
M.
Relaxing atmosphere right by the harbour overlooking Queen Charlotte Sound. Food is good and live music in some evenings.
j.
Fantastic steak_like melts in your mouth!!
Lovely atmosphere
If you want something different from the ordinary and o.k.pay then this restaurant is the place to go
A.
Great coffee and friendly staff and gluten free options, fantastic view too!!
M.
Wonderful evening with sunset view and live music from a local guitar player and singer. Food was delicious, the service was a little slow.
D.
Great chilled place with great location in front of the sea front to watch the ferries coming and going with a morning coffee. Great chai latte!
S.
The location prime...value for money....pleasnt service and peoole...price fair. I ordered mocachino I was given something else.
P.
Do yourself a favour, enjoy the best atmosphere and best location in Picton. Just dropped by for a drink but stayed for the friendly locals and the warm conversation.
R.
busy on New Years Eve and limited menu options. As first visit not sure if this is their usual menu options.
B.
Were here for lunch and I had one of the best fish-meals I've ever had. Very delicious! Highly recommend!
J.
Nice cafe and restaurant situated on the water front. Good coffee and a reasonable selection of cabinet food.
G.
Fantastic setting and friendly staff. But quite a long wait for what turned out to be fairly tasteless food.
T.
Excellent customer service real hot flat white etc very friendly staff, fresh farm eggs an added bonus. Well done everyone!!!
C.
Love it. Favourite Cafe in Picton, excellent coffee (BEST COFFEE!!) and awesome wine list to compliment the delicious menu.
D.
Not the cheapest place, that's for sure, but worth the money, believe me! My food was just so good, I really loved it! Thanks to you guys! 😊
L.
Friendly, quirky, comfortable, and a little bit wacky -- a great spot to catch up with friends.
M.
Expensive and indifferent service. Good choice of bottled beer. Limited on tap.
P.
Although friendly, the service was a bit patchy. Having said that the food was quite good so a recommend.
M.
Perfect spot to grab a coffee or hot chocolate when in beautiful Picton.

G.
Service very relaxed lovely coffees. Awesome artwork and nice outlook and vibe.
C.
Fantastic flat white and great views across the harbour.
R.
Great sandwiches, some are vegetarian, quick service, not far from the ferry dock
C.
Amazing food and a fun evening with live clasical guitarist!
G.
Great location and great choice of food and drinks at reasonable prices. Excellent service.
c.
Excellent location on harbour side Outside area also. Good collection of alcoholics d non alcoholic drinks and food .
j.
Good spot looking down the Sound. Seemed limited food (no fries) ok service.
C.
Very expensive, needed butter with the bread starter otherwise its just 5 pieces of dry bread. But cant fault the steak!
I.
Very assessable location, good view of the Bay. Friendly staff & good range of food selections
S.
Nice lil cafe rite on the waterfront in picton. Awesome staff and customer service
T.
I visit this place most times when I am in Picton. This time I was a little disappointed with the carrot cake as it was quite dry and not very juicy as it usually is.
V.
Outstanding food. Lunch and dinner were best meals we had in picton.
A.
Good place for a coffee when visit Picton, been here a few times and their pretty consistent 👌
y.
Order a iced coffee but give me a flat white, and have the medium steak as main course, but didn’t feel like medium at all,not worth the price.
K.
Love the Location.Little light on the Bacon with my Bacon and Eggs Breakfast.Orherwise very good.
A.
Fantastic food, great service will definitely be back
A.
Nice coffee & carrot cake. Rude dude behind the counter
R.
Beautiful setting on the fore shore. Great service and great coffee and Chai.

Always great food views and coffee

I enjoyed my juice and sandwich, however my farther was rather disappointed in his coffee and toasties.
S.
Best meal we had in Picton and the view doesn't get any better than this anywhere!
A.
Nice food, good coffee, friendly service, good music selection 😊
A.
Menu changes daily based on fresh, local ingredients. Amazing sea food!
g.
