A great place for having yummy 😋 starters. Friendly staff. Good ambiance as well. For food, we tried fish tikka, chicken momos and chicken soup and was really good. For mains we had Nepalese chicken curry which was average but the rice and laccha paratha was great. In short mouthwatering starters and you’ll keep digging into, hence won’t go mains 😅

Great curries, great service! The Nepalese starter Papdi Chhat is a must try. Lamb Duo main (hot) will knock your socks off

Try the indo-chinese starters, you might not want to go ahead with the mains as you will keep digging into the starters! Absolutely impressed!

Fantastic food!! We ate here last weekend and was one of the best we have been to. Kids rated it a 10/10. Certainly the best Naan we have ever had. Staff were great, so friendly. Would highly recommend. We will certainly be back when we are next on holiday in taupo.

Staff here is amazing and provide with great service. Decor is very welcoming and had plenty of parking available nearby. Food was good too but it was not the best I have had and given how expensive it is I have left one star off. Some Indian restaurants put too much cream in every dish, unfortunately that is the case here as well. It is definitely a nice to place to sit for a meal and would recommend a visit if not on a budget.

Loved everything about this place. The food was very delicious and the staff were very friendly. We had dinner here in our first night in Taupo and could not resist taking takeaway on our way back to Auckland the next day. Will definitely be back next time when we are in Taupo.

Excellent tasty food, the Nepalese specialities were really great. Especially the momo dumplings which I’d never had before and were an interesting combo of Chinese dumplings and Indian spices. Really friendly service, central location. Definitely recommended.

Food was really good i had many indian food in taupo but this time tried for the first time and i will visit again n again Dumplings momos were very good but chutney was next level👌👌 I ordered yellow dal and palak paneer d taste was amazing. Just a thought if veg is so good den non veg will be great must visit 10/10

Great location and good staff. The chef made us a special dish which was not in the menu. Highly recommend this place. The chicken lollipop was very tasty and didn't feel like any artificial things were added. The hot sauce was a great addon to lollipop.

There are numerous Indian restaurants in almost every corner of the country and one might think Indian food pretty much tastes always the same. Not there. Menu offers standard dishes loved by everyone plus some original, more exotic ones (Nepalese as well). We went for a classic chicken korma (sweet curry with cashew and almond) and a lamb junglee, a curry with lemongrass and coconut. Both were delicious but special mention to the second one, lamb was melting, SO flavourful and fresh, probably the best I've ever tasted. We ordered a garlic naan and a roti that perfectly matched our mains after finishing our steamed rice. Go for the Indian hot chai tea if you're into milky-spicy-warm beverages. Warm welcome, ultra friendly and helpful staff, incredibly delicious food. Do not miss that gem while in Taupo.

Wow what a great restaurant. Went here for a dinner on a quiet day of our honeymoon. We got the Indian set menu and everything was delicious. We had a great time trying the different starters and mains. The dessert was especially good. And the staff were super friendly and helpful. Chhatra took exceptionally good care of us. We will absolutely be coming back next time we are in Taupo. Edit: As promised we came back and Malabar is still excellent. Incredible food that came out quick. Staff were exceptional like last time. This time we ordered too much food but they put it in takeaway containers for us. Probably going to try and come here everytime we're in Taupo.

We have dined at Malabar and thoroughly enjoyed the service and the food. So when we hosted 14 people at home last night we immediately thought of Malabar. Everyone commented on how delicious the food was. No cost for delivery because of the quantity we ordered. We wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

Absolutely fantastic 😍 The food was incredible. The meat so tender and perfectly cooked and flavored. By far the best Indian/Nepalese restaurant I have ever dined in. The place is beautiful decorated and clean. The staff are polite and friendly. The prices are very reasonable. What more can you ask for. very very very very happy with my experience.

Mixed platter was an awesome starter. My favorite was the chicken lollipop with Tamarind sauce. Book first. A lot of people were turned away due to being fully booked for reservations. We had to order and be finished in an hour and 40 minutes. Unfortunately they needed to open the front door when the kitchen got abit smokey. So bring something warm just in case. Glad we read earlier reviews to warn us it might be cold. 👍

This place honestly has the most amazing food I have had all weekend. My partner doesn’t even like Indian food and she is loving it. We ordered three times because we just kept wanting more. I have travelled across the new Zealand and tried meal in some reputated restaurants in big cities like Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch etc. After dining here at Mala bar, I would say with no hesitation that it is one of the best Nepalese fusion restaurant. The food was really delicious, service was top notch, ambiance was cozy overall whole hospitality was great. Must try if you are passing through or staying at taupo for few days.

The best food you will eat in Taupo, the staff are also incredible. Miss S was a lovely waitress, and a waiter opened the door for us when we left. The goat curry is superb, so soft and not gamely at all. The staff know the menu so well and gave fantastic recommendations. I can’t recommend this place enough.

This is a very well restaurant serving delicious and authentic Indian food to a very high standard. As a couple we ordered 6 items from the menu. All arrived together as we had requested and were delicious. I had ordered one dish as extra hot and this was also perfect. The mango kulfi dessert was excellent and finished off the meal nicely. The staff were courteous and attentive in equal measure.

Malabar is a must if visiting Taupo. The food is incredible, reasonably priced and never have I had such wonderful service. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend the momo starter (Nepalese dumplings) it was delicious!

Best curry I've had in along time.

Delicious meal here tonight. We had 3 entrees and 2 mains and all were outstanding. Great menu selection including some we'd never seen before. Even our 11 year old was happy. Highly recommend the Duo Lamb.

I chose the duo lamb, it was beautifully cooked and presented. Two different ways of serving lamb one moist in a sauce and one dry. The different flavours melded together and with a pashwari nan the meal was excellent.

An absolutely satisfying experience. Food was delicious, tea was aromatic, and the staff were very friendly. We enjoyed the momos, masala fish and prawn stir fry. The garlic naan was bang on and had a bit of crunch to it. Visit this place on your next visit to Taupo.

One of the best Indian restaurants we have been to - and we have been to many. Definitely have the Banquet and mix in a few Nepalese dishes as well. Do not miss this if you are in Taupo!

This restaurant is a lovely experience. We were warmly greeted at the door and upon sitting down, promptly given water. The staff were all very smiley and happy which put us in an exceptional mood prior to our meal. The mood did not change as we began to eat. The food we were served was great. I had the dal jhaneko which is a delicious vegetarian dish. I'd like to mention Sangita who served us throughout, she had so much positive energy it is impossible to not be happy too. Great experience and I highly recommend this restaurant if you're after Indian & Nepalese cuisine.

I have lived in India for almost 25 years. After coming to New Zealand, I was struggling to get good Indian food. Some of the Auckland’s well-known “Indian” food places couldn’t impress me but recently I was in Taupo and found this amazing place. Oh my god!! My taste buds were high (you know what I mean, eh!!) after having an amazing lunch. The person who was taking our order was very kind and honest. He provided us with an outstanding service. If you want to taste something mind-blowing then ask him for the recommendation. He recommended us Himalayan chicken and it was one of the best I have ever eaten. If you are in Taupo and want to try something refreshing, this is the place.

Delicious curry and incredibly friendly, attentive staff. I was overly ambitious with my curry heat choice and found it a bit spicy. All the staff and manager were so apologetic about it and gave us a 20% discount on the meal. Was very sweet and totally not needed as the food was amazing and fully eaten 😄

Customer service is just as amazing as the food! Me and my partner drove here all the way from Hamilton, now i dont ever want to eat indian/nepalese cuisine in hamilton knowing it will never be this good! Everything was tasty, hot, fresh, delicious and served with a smile! Service was inviting, prompt, friendly and professional from the moment we walked in! Hopefully we can come back soon!

Lovely and attentive service! The food was generous in servings and some of the most delicious indian curries I have had. The kids had the mango chicken - they devoured it, the mango flavour really shone through. Yum!

Incredible Indian restaurant. Delicious crispy onion bhaji followed by the best Korma I have ever had. Loved the addition of the peppers and the chicken breast. Had a great dining experience here. The staffs and very friendly and will make recommendations based on what you're after. If you don't know the menu well, just ask them. I'd highly recommend Nepali style kukkad curry (chicken with Nepali twist). Would visit again.

Best food in NZ! During a recent 5-week trip to NZ we ate out at restaurants several times. We found Malabar to have the perfect combination of i) excellent service by polite, humble staff (Nepalese); ii) amazing tasting food; and iii) great value for money (e.g. unlike many other restaurants no extra money is charged for rice). We had ordered five dishes ranging from lamb, goat, chicken and fish as well as a dahl and ALL tasted simply amazing. Would love to come back soon!!

So far the best place for a curry, not only in Taupo, but NZ. The flavor of all the dishes, and we have had a lot, are just amazing. If you want the best tasting than you should definitely be coming here.

Malabar we have recently discovered and love it. Your curries are full of flavour and the cheesy garlic naan from here is a must.... delicious. Good service. We will back again for sure :)

Authentic Indo-Nepali Cuisine We stopped here for lunch during our return from a 10 day road trip. Pining for some home cooked taste, and Malabar just delivered on that front. Great personalized service. We tried both Chicken and Lamb Momo's [ Dumplings ]. Absolutely yum. Had a Himalaya Kukked Curry. Just the right taste. Lamb Junglee and a wonderful Dal [ Lentil Soup ]. Absolutely brilliant food. This was recommended to us and would not hesitate recommending to anyone else...

Nepalese style food here is crazy good! Omg.. can't believe that this level of good food can be found in Taupo. Must have food here for everyone who is in Taupo. There's a good range of vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free food too. U can even tell them how spicy u want the food to be so no worries about it. 100% recommended!

I found this place via Google reviews and it did not disappoint. The decor and ambience is lovely. The waitress was friendly and attentive. As I was the only customer at the time, the service was superb. I ordered a medium palak paneer. It was the best version of this dish I've ever had. The spinach sauce was very finely blended - so smooth and delicate it had a creamy texture and taste. And the "medium" was spot on - exactly the right level of heat/spice, just enough to leave a pleasant warmth in the mouth. The rice was light and fluffy, and steaming hot when it arrived at the table. The portion sizes were pretty spot on for a single person - a little more than was comfortable for me for a lunch meal, but not enough to take away leftovers so I finished the curry and had to leave some rice. The only disappointment was the drink I ordered: passion fruit lemonade. It tasted like ordinary lemon squash softdrink with a bit of passionfruit added (but not enough to balance out the lemon flavour). I would definitely eat here again.

We got there on a quiet night so we were seated quickly and provided with some helpful insights into the food available and the portion sizes. We had the butter chicken, palak paneer, and naans (garlic and peshwari) and all tasted wonderful. It was the best butter chicken I have had (on the more tomatoey side) and the palak paneer was well done. The naans were soft yet with some crisp on the edges and flavours all round. Great meal in a beautiful place

Visited the place on june 2018 . There were eight of us including 2 infants. The staff were extremely helpful to get some milk boiled for both the infants . We ordered some biryanis and curry . The food was really good . It took a bit of time to be served but we were not in a rush either . The interior is perfectly done with soft music played allthrough. The only annoying sound was from our kids . Felt sorry for the others who seemed to have a very good time . The staff were extremely helpful. The content of the food was good . The price was not cheap but suits the quality and taste of food served . Infact we paid 200$ for 6 of us . And all were tummyfull and had variety of food . So it looks like cheap for the quality of food . Will visit again for sure . Especially for the wonderful staff who served . Thank you

So amazing! The staff there are really kind BUT THE FOOD. High praise! I ordered the kofta with rice and it was delicious enough I went back for seconds the next day. The date pudding is to die for though. It's life warm fudgy cake that melts in your mouth with ice cream on the side.

The restaurant is attractive as the menu. You can choose different starter and being Nepali the Nepali dish attracted me like aalo and kakro ko aachar, and Goat curry as main dish satisfied me . Lila (manager) was such a humble and his service was 10/10 . Also the next day in Taupo I went there and they offered me the new dish in the restaurant was Thali (most recommend) lunch. The chicken curry, goat curry, red beans, ,garlic naan , rice still make me drool. One of the most recommended restaurant. Will be visiting it again.

We would like to take the opportunity to review the owner Liladar of Malabar restaurant in Taupo. The food is genuinely authentic and represents both the Indian subcontinent and Nepalese cuisine! As parents of a child with severe food allergies ourselves, where we often have experienced the effects of poor cross contamination management and the allergic reactions that have resulted in our child in addition to our knowledge of food safety systems ourselves, we would like to recommend this specific owner and restaurant to other parents from New Zealand and overseas with food allergy challenges. Liladhar intimately knows his menu, could immediately explain what dish contains what allergens without having to reference a record and successfully manage to minimize cross contamination risks on three separate occasions when we dined at his restaurant.

Best restaurant in Taupo, the manager leeladhar he is a nice gentleman. He takes care of your food quality, had some good chat. Place is nice , food is superb. Masala tea is also very nice.

Not only excellent food but a phenomenal caring environment for the customers. The lamb, vegetables, naan, and rice were all superb. The lamb in particular was incredibly tender. The sauces were succulent on both the lamb and vegetables. The owner is a master chef preparing Indian food with a Nepalese influence. We had walked there from the Hilton about a 45 minute walk away. As we finished dining a torrential rain storm made walking back out of the question. The owner took us home in his own car and absolutely refused any compensation. I have never seen that level of hosptality in any other restaraunt.

Best Indian food in all of New Zealand and Australia , had the dal makhani and the chef made special kadahi paneer for us which was outstanding , will highly recommend this place for authentic Indian food , will come again for sure . The home Made chutney on the onion pakora was also exceptional

Amazing find in Taupo! Artistic fusion of tradition and innovation. Beautiful presentation for all dishes, but more importantly, everything was delicious. Highly recommend the vegetable madrash served with coconut cream. Kadai paneer was also fabulous. Even the naan achieved a higher level, delicately crispy and thin. Can't go wrong here!

My wife and I were visiting Taupo on honeymoon on a drive from Rotorua and checked the Google rating to decide which place to have some Indian food. Trusted Google ratings and were not disappointed. Onion pakoras were delicious and so was the butter chicken. As we were to drive back to Rotorua, we wanted to have mocktails to go along. Always skeptical about mocktails but the Malabar special mocktail was delicious. Great hospitality as well. Definitely must try if hungry. Oh, and the takeaway samosas were damn nice as well.

The waiting time was of forty five minutes on my first visit to Malabar Beyond India. But their specially made Himalayan kukkad curry was so worth the wait. Don’t miss their papper lamb too!

Great Indian food. We had Palak Paneer and Kadhi Paneer as our mains. I thought the Palak Paneer was very good and my fiance said it was the best Kadhi Paneer they've had. Samosas and bread we're both very good as well.

We were there about 3 weeks ago..After 4-5 days of eating steaks and grills we were craving for indian cuisine..found this place and no regrets..the food was so yummy and gastronomy cravings were very satisfying..the lamb curry,salt and pepper calamari and garlic naans were so delicious.every thing we ate was very delicious😀so much so went back that nite for take aways..they were so kind enough to pack extra food for us🙏 without extra charges..excellent warm and friendly service..
