Reviews of Ming Garden Chinese Restaurant
S. B.
An impromptu visit. We dined in. Very pleasantly surprised! The food was absolutely delicious and totally authentic! It only took us minutes to down our food as it was just so good! Only criticism being that the restaurant was quite cold. A bit more heating would have been great. Definitely will be returning to The Ming Garden for a planned visit soon! So many dishes I want to try!
P. S.
Times during covid tough for restaurants. Te Anau very quiet. We had a lovely meal. Far to much for 2 off us. Flavours on all dishes good. Staff were quick to help.
S.
Great food! So yum! Seafood sizzle is absolutely amazing.
You should order one of soup bowls too which is only $7.
Thank you for great foods.

Our absolute favourite restaurant in Te Anau. Initially we were planning to try out many different restaurants in town. But after having just one dinner at Ming Garden we were hooked. We ended up having all three dinners here and ordered some for takeaway.
Service was 100% amazing I can't complement enough. The owner (gentleman) was funny, keeping us in check if we needed anything else and taking away plates whenever it was empty. He even topped up tea without even us requesting. Perfect service. Highly recommended.

Awesome food, best Chinese I think I've had, my kids loved it, we even went back because it was so good and we were only in Te Anau 3 nights 😉👍Great service also, highly recommended!

Dishes are a tad expensive but the consolation is the serving is huge and you can probably order 2 for 2 sharing. The dishes are tasty as such but probably uses too much oil for my liking. Other than that it's a decent place for a stopover if you have carving for Chinese food.

We order three dishes along with three white rice only cost us $93. A tasty nice ambience restaurant . Probably from restaurant outlook doesn’t look so attractive however the foods re awesome! We love it!

Very authentic CHINESE food - remarkable to find this in Te Anau. Recommend the Szechuan chicken, hot plate lamb and most dishes. They tend towards the Cantonese dishes, but the Szechuan is quite nice. It’s quite a large place - I guess to do the tour groups. We must have got it on an free day with no groups. The boss lady could smile a bit more, but overall service was good.

Fantastic meal last night had set menu A all my favorites, hundreds and thousands on my icecream a real treat thankyou Ming Garden

It’s a must for those who hunted for Chinese food. Their service is fast and the restaurant is full house the moment I had dinner over there. I ordered this curry chicken rice. If you want to save money, you can take away. It will be cheaper if you take away.

My partner and I stayed in Te Anau for two weeks while we were backpacking and hiking in the area. We ate at Ming Garden after hiking all day and we loved it! We loved it so much that we ended up eating there almost every night! Great food, great service, great prices, and great portion sizes! I will eat here anytime I’m in Te Anau and I highly recommend Ming Garden to anyone that loves good food.
L.
Friendly staff, nice restaurant and atmosphere. The best hot and sour soup I’ve ever had. We also shared a hot and spicy chicken dish and fried rice, the portions are huge, hot and delicious!

We went there for dinner on our way to Milford Sound. So glad we did as we missed Chinese food for several days. Food taste very good and fresh, not too oily and even the tea taste good. Great to support local Te Anau business. Have a go, you won't be disappointed

Excellent Service. Great spot for tourists craving Chinese food in Te Anau!
The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. They were delighted to make suggestions for dishes on the menu and served everything with a smile.
The food tasted of fresh, clean ingredients and was cooked and served at a good speed considering the many customers there for dinner.
All of the food was delicious and seasoned well and tasted of authenticity. We left very pleased with the meal and affordable pricing. Thanks Ming Garden!

Food was very tasty. Service was slow but very friendly, but I think it was a bad night for them. Only seemed to be one person waiting tables, welcoming people, running the till.

Really enjoy the Chinese cuisine here, supplied my food cravings during my two weeks at Te Anau as I tramped the Kepler, Milford and Routeburn tracks. Authentic and well-priced (esp. with takeaways), with generous meat & carbs portions. Personally enjoyed beef with vege rice and Yangzhou fried rice. Love to come here to recharge my energy stores. Staff is also personal and friendly. Could not recommend this restaurant more highly.

I remember having eaten here back in 2003 when I was barely a teenager, and whether it was due to hunger or a craving for Chinese food after days of not having it, I have remembered the flavours, and the ambience. The service was great, and the food was spectacular, it did not let me down at all this time around. I would be happy to eat here everytime I go to Te Anau.
J. M.
This place looks a little dim, and the decor is a bit dated but its a unreal feed, the food has got tons of flavor, authentic and good serving portions. If your looking for somewhere quite and easy this is the place. The price was reasonable for the quality of food you are getting. Id say this is a hidden gem of Te Anau
R.
This is one of the greatest chinese restaurants I have ever been to. The sweet and sour pork was absolutely fantastic as was the owner. 我爱你

Very well-cooked, tasty and very well priced Chinese food. Pleasantly surprised to find such a great Chinese restaurant in a small town. Highly recommended to all.
J. C.
Food was moderate. Had sweet n sour pork, salt n pepper squid. They were nicely portioned. Not much choices for Asian cuisine if you are in te anau.
L.
Great Chinese food, quick service, friendly staff. We went there twice in 3 days for dinner and it was excellent both times .Don't be put off by the appearances, the food is top class.
E.
Great food, great service and so very accommodating with our 2 little kids. Some of the best chinese I have had in a while. Thank you!
C. W.
Went twice. Once for dinner - wok fried bok choy and Cantonese Roast Chicken 炸子鸡 were so outstanding. Next day couldn't resist to head back when we realised we were nearby. Had really good vegetarian flat rice noodles, bok choy, tofu w mushrooms, a spicy chicken 辣子鸡 and a fried rice. If you can take spicy ask for the housemade chilli. Try a little first cos it's spicy! The wok stir fried items in general have a lot of that 'wok's breath' which makes a good stir fry.
K.
If your concept of Chinese food revolves around wontons, springrolls and chow mein, please take the opportunity to dine here and order the following. Hopefully, they'll change your perception:
Crispy Paper Chicken. This dish may take a while to prepare, but it's worth the wait. Nicely seasoned with five spices salt, this chicken is tender yet sports a crispy paper thin skin. Delicious.
Stir fried vegetables (ask the friendly waitress for recommendations of the availabilities). After verifying the chef's Chinese origins (he's Cantonese), and being Cantonese ourselves, we decided to test his skills with this simple stir fry. A seemingly simple dish. But with simplicity comes the difficulty of perfecting it. The dish that was served to us had the hallmarks of a skilled Cantonese chef, the most important of all its Wok's Breath. The Japanese call it Umami, or what scientists call the sixth taste. And while many places achieve This with MSG (with somewhat mixed results), what was served did not. It's done correctly with extremely high heat and constant stir frying. Definitely a nod to good Cantonese cuisine.
If the above are anything to go by, my family of five, despite having been deprived of Chinese food for a good six days holidaying here, have decided that the food is good not because of said deprivation, but it's just good. Plain and simple.
C.
Come with my husband and 2 children. Great family restaurant with authentic Chinese food.
Will definitely recommend 👌

After walking in and sitting down our expectations were quite low, but the food came and it was fantastic! Had Szechuan spicy chicken and the fried rice.
M.
Great food, quite a lot and tasty.
P. B.
Looks a bit cheap from the outside and the interiour is not very pleasing but the food is SOO good, and the portion sizes are crazy for the price you pay. But not too big either which is nice, i was very satisfied afterwards.

(Translated) I visited this Chinese restaurant in Te Anau more than 20 years ago, and it is still open. In addition to the good food, the location is in the middle of the main street of the town, so it has been open for nearly 30 years. Must have the skill

20幾年前到Te Anau就來過這家中華料理餐廳,現在還屹立不搖的開著,除了菜色好外,地點更是處於小鎮大街的正中央,所以能開將近30年的餐廳,一定有著該有的功力
