Reviews of Redcliff Cafe
D.
The best meal I had by far in Te Anau (though the food at Fiordland lodge was a close second). Casual atmosphere with 5 star dining food and amazing drinks. Great choices for vegetarians and the lamb my guest had was exquisitely cooked
G.
This was a great food surprise maybe not a surprise with 4 lamb and beef top awards on the wall. Service lovely and fitted us in but id book. Lovely food especially the salad starter and venison. Well worth a visit in Te Anua chwck out photos
B.
What an amazing find for our one night in Te Anau. The food was amazing and very reasonable priced. We had dessert too-couldn't resist! The best lemon parfait I've had. The ambience was very nice and lots of memorabilia to look at. The staff and service were excellent too.
S.
Hi my wife and myself was told about this place and we decided to go and tried it I asked the waitress what she could recommend she said the hare so I ordered it it was lovely and my wife had the lamb it was delicious too I would recommend Redcliff to eat
L.
Had the pork belly and venison osso bucco. There isn't a sides menu but you probably wouldn't need one anyway as the mains are very large! Delicious food - especially the pork belly.
J.
No doubt one of the best place to eat in Te Anau - friendly service, decor full of character and of course, delicious food made with local ingredients such as venison and blue cod. The portion is very generous. We had a fantastic dinner here and was surprised that it was full booked on a Thursday night. Don’t forget to make a reservation if you want to dine here.
S.
All the locals tell you this is the best place in town, and it has a lot to recommend it - great service, a lot of character, and huge servings of well-cooked food.
But we'd hoped for a little more, perhaps victims of the reviews.
No complaints but the food was, for the price, in need of something more than simply well cooked, and large serves of meat.
There's a good selections of wines by the glass - both local and across NZ, and the staff were very well informed and very helpful.
Make sure you get an inside table in Winter as the covered area out the back was freezing even in Summer.
The mains, and entrees were so big, we had to skip dessert.
A.
Arguably the best restaurant in Te Anau. Bookings advised. The Pork belly was very good. So were the tasting portions of three different wines for $17.
t.
We couldn't try the main menu as it was fully booked. But the entry is worth to try. Hopefully can try the main menu soon. Amazing customer service. Amazing food.
N.
Cute bar. Nice garden bar out back. And petanque! Fantastic. Lovely for a drink, didn't eat as not much for the vegos on the menu ( there was some unspecified chef's vegetarian creation option for those risktakers who want to venture into the unknown without knowing their meal! ) or feel confident to go in sit down, ask their server to explain the meal and then potentially had to get up and leave if it wasn't what they were in the mood for. For me, I prefer when they tell the veges the meal option the same as the meat eaters on the menu. But very nice atmosphere for a drink.
S.
Amazing place full of atmosphere and wonderful food. The staff were helpful and attentive, and great to see this place takes the Covid restrictions seriously. We were told there's also live session music sometimes too. Unmissable in Te Anau.
J.
A really enjoyable evening. Great friendly staff and the food is amazing. Priced are good value too. A must place to go in Te Anau.
S.
Service was excellent. Goats cheese profiteroles were decent. The actual goats cheese was really flavourful. Profiterole was ok. Lamb main lacked flavour at all, I could not tell it had ras el hanout. The lamb was soft but no real flavour. Wife’s venison was nice but the sauce lacked flavour and cabbage a bit soggy. The dessert was weird. The moose was excellent, it came with chocolate truffles which look like they came from a box. But it does go with the dish in terms of texture or flavour. Bit of a mixed bag really.
w.
A great little find just off the main Street. Good atmosphere and great food. Helpful staff and most things can be made gf. Highly recommend
C.
Amazing food and friendly atmosphere. The special was Wild Hare Backstrap. Fantastic!
V.
An interesting selection of vegetables with the steak. Beeautiful!
C.
Best meal I’ve had in NZ! Cozy setting and only open for dinner. Great flavors and fresh ingredients. Service was good and quick. Slightly more expensive but worth every penny. A must eat place for anyone who’s here in Te Anau.
D.
Beautiful wee place with great views. Shared meat platter is a must.... so delicious.. and I think it was called miners larger or something along those lines... lovely drop and great services
M.
Lunch menu and wine list were good. Enjoyed meals and atmosphere. Nice wait staff. Website needs work as it took a booking for lunch and then when we arrived we were informed that they don't take bookings. No lunch menu on website. Nevertheless we enjoyed the lunch on a rainy Southland day and would certainly go back. Dinner menu more interesting.
R.
Dinner at the restaurant was gastronomically a memorable experience for a party of six and we enjoyed the low key but attentive service. Highly recommend!
P.
Amazing food, we had a very generous portionof venison on creamed cabbage. Grungy place, lovely wait staff.
V.
Great meal at Redcliff Cafe! It had a very homey vibe. We went as it was one of the best rated in Te Anau. We had the lamb - delicious and tender but wish there was a bit more meat on the rack; the vegetables underneath were super tasty. We also had the wild venison which was cooked well; unfortunately the creamy vegetables underneath were too strong and heavy for my liking. The steak was the best meat of the 3 - cooked to perfection and spiced well! Finally we got a crepe brûlée which was delicious! Prices for main dishes were comparable to similar restaurants in Te Anau ($38-43ish).
D.
Friendly staff, great service and location. Excellent indoor outdoor seating and dining. Fantastic menu and food. Highly recommend.
A.
Super dinner to celebrate our anniversary 💞. Our mains were the blue cod 🐟 and the hare. Both perfectly cooked. Do patronize if in that area. Had no tummy place for dessert 🎂.
B.
Absolutely brilliant flavors , great unique dishes, a must do when in the area
R.
Unfortunately, we cannot agree with all the five star-reviews. We found the food to be average, while the staff didn’t make us feel very welcome. Main courses were okay, the dessert not so much, while one would expect a higher quality at this price level. All in all, we would not recommend this restaurant.
v.
Great for lunch as well as dinner. More expensive than the average NZ restaurant but the food is well worth the price. The atmosphere is lovely, the back garden and conservatory is an absolute gem for the eyes and the nose (when I visited the honeysuckle was in flower - with amazing scent through the garden).
The service is very professional and fast.
We went back twice.
d.
Hi I would like to encourage anyone to go and experience the staff
Food and atmosphere at redcliffe Cafe in te anau.
I surprised my girlfriend and got married in lvan Wilson Park then headed to restaurant which I had pre-booked outstanding service. Thanks so much
D.
Friendly staff, good beer choices. We didn't eat here but the menu was very tempting.
S.
Excellent food (especially the wild game) and all of the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. The hare backstrap dish was particularly good. The pints of tap beer were delicious and surprisingly well priced!
R.
Stunning meal and excellent service. Will definitely be returning to try something different

Great Expectations
Like you, I read the online reviews. I was really anticipating our visit. On arrival the building looks like a country cottage. The front section is a pub clearly popular with locals. Inside and past the bar area is an eclectically decorated restaurant. Staff are pleasant and helpful and the menu reads like something you would expect to find in a top rated restaurant in capital city. I ordered the Duck Confit, my partner the Deer and our guest, not being so hungry ordered the Salmon entree.
The duck is served with a blue cheese souffle and home made coleslaw. The duck was one thigh. The souffle was excellent but the coleslaw dominated the plate. So much so that it seemed the dish should have been called Coleslaw with a side of Duck Confit. See the accompanying picture taken after I had given up eating the cabbage.
My partner had order deer in another local restaurant the prior evening and enjoyed it so much she decided to have it again. She found the meat to be soft but "stringy". So much so that it was inedible without long periods of chewing and deep swallows. She gave up and what remained on the plate is in the accompanying photo.
On clearing the plates the waitress asked what the problem was. When the "stringy" issue was explained we were told that we should have notified them of the problem before we began eating. (???) We had not asked for a refund on the price but clearly the staff were keen to put their foot down on that possibility before it arose.
The salmon entree was excellent.
In the end our great expectations were turned to great disappointment. It is a shame as it should have been so good.
J.
Outdoor honky-tonk in front, seriously but unfussy gourmet food in the back. Venison was excellent and the deconstructed lemon meringue pie was great. Make a reservation!
T.
Amazing food experience. I would never expect such a good meal. A must go ! And remember to make a reservation first !
C.
A great little restaurant tucked away. Redcliff doesn't look like much from the outside but they serve delicious food, both dinner and dessert. The staff we friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend it.
M.
Love this spot! Cute little house converted into a restaurant with a great outdoor area out back. Great good - salad and Hare was awesome. Venison seems like a popular dish here. Highly recommend this place!
S.
This was the best meal I have had in a long time. We were a party of 6 and every main we ordered was delicious. The very best dish was the special of the day Hare and it was outstanding. We also enjoyed the venison, lamb and fish. The mixed platter was also very enjoyable. We will definitely be visiting again.
D.
The best food in Te Anau with lovely, friendly service. Good vegetarian, too.
T.
A very warm welcoming Restaurant as well as friendly staff. I had the prime steak which I felt was a little fatty for the price but other wise the starter was amazing! My partner had the salmon which was also very tasteful just a little heavy.
R.
We had a great dinner at Redcliff. The place is cosy and nicely decorated. The food was very good, well presented and generous portions.
P.
The looks from a distance were deceiving, we didn't expect this place to be so amazing. Friendly waiters helped us get a table at a practically fully booked time. Had a good glass of wine to accompany the lamb. The dish was superbly prepared, and the service likewise. There were evwn fleec blankets on every chair outside, even though the terrace was heated. Hope you receive even more awards, keep it going! Picture is a detail of the outside tables, nice touch!
S.
Great service and best food ever. Don't miss going here for a meal.
C.
Fantastic food. The best thought out kids meal our 5yo has ever had (photo attached). Good location and service.
T.
Delicious. The Gnocchi is definitely one of the top I've had and the lamb and salmon were excellent as well.
A.
Great food. Good drink. Nice decor and friendly staff!
We ordered the lamb and the rabbit. They were absolutely delicious!
L.
Amazing service, food and atmosphere!
The vibe from the outside was that it was a small cafe and boy was I wrong!
Upon arrival we were greeted by Jess, our amazing hostess for the night and also knowledgeable tour guide for our trip, Jess was both knowledgeable and passionate about the whole menu and every aspect of service.
The food was incredible- I ordered the steak and arincini balls and my partner ordered the hare!!!
We ended up coming back the second night of our stay because it was just that good :)
The food was well priced and presented as fine dining.
Please dont pass up the opportunity to go and eat here!
If i could give it 6/5 i would!
E.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner last night. The service was top notch and the food was incredible. Full of flavour and great serving size. Lovely cosy atmosphere. Awesome experience overall, we see why it's rated #1. Thanks!
J.
Awesome menu of local and sustainable produce. Great selection of drinks too. Nice atmosphere and layout. Book early to avoid disappointment. The food is absolutely fantastic, packed with flavour and really well presented, worth every penny. Will be going here again.
J.
Redcliff was a super find. Beautiful food, delightful and accommodating staff. Best in Te Anau.
W.
Good for dates or for bringing a family. Steak was really good and dessert was something else
G.
A very warm place to have a good beer in the quiet town of Te Anau. It was nice to find out that some actors of the Lord of the Rings used to hang out in this pub during the filming, and maybe someone could tell you some fun facts about that. We didn't try the food, but it seemed good.
T.
We loved this place. 4 delicious meals, wonderful desserts and fun staff. Pictured was the bread pudding dessert special. Seriously good. But can also recommend the lemon merengue!
E.
Amazing food in a lovely cosy space & great service. can't ask for anything better. despite not having made a reservation until the very last minute, we were given a 30 minute expected wait time but were seated in half that.
J.
The venison, the trio of dips and the child’s platter get five stars. The child’s platter was the best children’s meal I’ve ever seen. My vegetarian soufflé was a delicious frittata. The risotto needed cooking in real stock for flavour and the salad dressing on the small salad was nice but a bit short on flavour. It’s an (almost) five star restaurant, not just a cafe.
m.
A gem of a place. Small and cosy. There are heater overhead and lap blankets on the backs of chairs just in case you feel cold.
Service is quick and efficient.
Warm, and casual atmosphere.
Good is excellent.
M.
We shared a carrot, pumpkin and ginger soup to start, which was delicious and came with some of the tasty rye bread I've eaten. For mains we had the sou vide lamb and crayfish special, both were excellent and sufficient motivation for me to leave a review. The service was also very good and attentive even though the restaurant was close to full.
N.
Great spot for an afternoon drink in the sunshine. Snacks are tasty & generous portions.
e.
So great. Sat in the back with a view of the mountains but still warm enough to be comfy. Great food. Very generous.
K.
Busy night when we were there, but the service was great, and so was the food. A great vibe.
g.
Yummy meals and good size portions enough for a healthy appetite.
Friendly attentive service, relaxing atmosphere.
L.
Beautiful food, amazing staff. Definitely recommend.
Y.
Superb little fine dining experience hidden away down a quite street. Cosy, romantic and most importantly delicious.
O.
Great food and excellent ambiance - I definitely recommend to try
E.
Dine here night with friends, excellent service and amazing food, Steak was perfectly cooked ! highly recommended!!
F.
The place is amazing with lovely staffs and the venison was the best I have had in NZ!!
H.
Lovely food and great vibe.
G.
Excellent lamb and beef dishes. Nice atmosphere
C.
Amazing food and staff. We had the pork and rib eye meals which were the best! I was commenting on the food the next day and wished we had stayed longer to try something else on their menu. Highly recommended.
G.
Absolutely amazing delicious freshly cooked food, I had the hare.....omg it melted, Jon had venison So so tasty. Would highly recommend & will definitely be back.
O.
The food is great- every thing others have said but the cafe was let down on the service ( or would have been 5 stars).
We arrived slightly early and we were asked to wait at the bar and we would be called up - which is fine, however half an hour later it was clear we'd been forgotten and when I asked, someone else had been shown to our table (who hadn't even booked!).
Mix-ups happen but the staff here were not particularly apologetic and seemed rather harried and rushed all evening.
In the current downturn one thing businesses can and should do is provide a great customer experience.
A.
Great food, great atmosphere! And live music at the end of the night! Good times
A.
Excellent food. Quite expensive but worth it.
S.
We have recently dined at 4 different restaurants in Te Anau and Redcliff was by far the best, and cooked as we requested. The food was delicious, the staff were efficient and good atmosphere.
Make sure you book a table and enjoy your evening.
P.
The food was really good. The flavours were different than the usual food we go for but we still enjoyed it. We kind of felt the portion was bit not fulfilling for the price but it might be because we were very hungry after finishing the Milford track. The dessert was amazing. Also the ambiance of the restaurant was super cool.
A.
Great singer but unfortunately we couldn't stay long.
C.
A must visit place whenever you're in Te Anau. We've been going for years and the quality of the dishes never fails to impress! One of the very few restaurants which regularly has rabbit on the menu, a much under rated favourite of mine.
C.
Very small and rustic on the outside, with a patio, very clean and rustic chic on the inside! Food was amazing. I'd say a bit over priced, but high quality. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, though not overly attentive. Food was very slow to come out, but was hot and very tasty, so maybe it just takes that long. Good beer and wine selection.
N.
This is the best food we had in the South Island of NZ! We were in Te Anau for two nights, and ate here three times - twice for dinner and once for nibbles. We did not even bother trying another restaurant! Everything was delicious. My husband enjoyed the venison (wild, not farm raised) and the lamb - bot NZ dishes. I had the blue cod the first night (amazing) and the pork belly the second (also delicious but much heartier). Order the garlic loaf as an appetizer - it has incredible butter and roasted garlic. Roasted winter vegetables were perfect on a cold rainy day. Rabbit ravioli was delicious and a NZ dish.
Go here! Make a reservation ahead of time if possible. If not put your name down then have a few drinks and sit in the cozy bar area or outside until your table opens!
P.
You have to go there just for the atmosphere, everything else is another world 😎
J.
Excellent food, great service, friendly atmosphere
J.
Came here for dinner. Excellent service on top of an excellent meal. One had The Venison, the other had the Cod. Both great choices which we recommend. A small unusual little restaurant. Looks like it could do with a bit of a make over, but very atmospheric. Would not like to visit in winter as I suspect it could be very cold.definately worth a visit
G.
Great little bar. Cosy atmosphere and good ales.
Restaurant also but was fully booked and couldn't try it. Looked good menu.
T.
Atmosphere, staff, drinks = amazing. The food? Out of this world! Thanks for the incredible hospitality and incredible food. Will be recommending to everyone who is coming to Te Anau!
S.
Sat at the bar with limited bar menu that was not great
The bartenders were great the atmosphere nice and the wine list good enough I still recommend
S.
Great rustic country pub with a roaring log fire. The beer garden has views of the lake and mountains. Good beer. Also a great restaurant with fine dining at reasonable prices. Three courses plus drinks for three was $230.
B.
Great service, very friendly staff. Clean, tidy and great character building. The food was top notch all round, presented amazingly and tasted even more amazing. Very highly recommended!!
A.
I really struggled to review this place.
The food was delicious but oversized. We’d read up beforehand and made sure to only order main course, but they were still plenty big enough.
The beer on tap was also delicious (Mischievous Kea from a Queenstown brewery) and came in Real Pints! Not just 440ml thimbles.
The affogato had half decent espresso served with it, along with a great Pedro Ximenez Sherry which was super tasty.
But then they brought the bill.
Maybe it’s because I’m British and still not “native” after being in NZ for four years, but when the waitress brings the bill without being asked that’s as close to being told to LEAVE IMMEDIATELY as you can get without them dropping an f-bomb. I was planning to order another beer (I’m pretty sure we were well past the time they’d need the table back) but after the bill arrived I just couldn’t do it.
We took the hint, paid up and left early instead.
That said, you’re in Te Anau. There’s literally nowhere better to go.
S.
I highly recommend getting reservations as they book up quick for dinner. I had the smoked salmon and my husband had the venison. Both were so tender, flavorful and would order again! This place is a must visit!
J.
This place was incredible. They had a cozy fire burning by the front entrance, and although we didn’t have a reservation, they accommodated us by the bar. Our server was warm, friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered the rabbit appetizer, and the venison and ribeye dinners. They were each full of flavor, tender, and absolutely delicious. My compliments to the chef. Hands down My favorite meal of the trip!! So glad we stopped in, and a must for anyone in Lake Te-Anu
R.
All the entrees are overpriced. I got the duck entree at $36 and the taste was such that I was barely able to finish it. To be fair it came out pretty quickly. The ambiance was nice. Add a beer and the total was $47. Not quite sure what all the positive acclaim is.
K.
Wonderful food excellent atmosphere superb service. We will be back
G.
Great vibe, unique menu and overall great spot for a beer or dinner.
M.
The craft beers on tap were great and we really enjoyed the food we ordered. The service was friendly and effective. Very happy to recommend & return again.
J.
When we entered we were greeted warmly by the host who took us promptly to a nice table on the back patio. The back garden is nice and there was a refreshing breeze. Drinks and entrees came quickly with our mains not long behind. I was impressed with the quality and speed of the services, especially when you receive such high quality food. I had the lamb and it was very mild and tender served over couscous and Mediterranean vegetables. Sublime!
s.
We didn't book a table but they managed to squeeze us in. Service was great and the food was lovely. The venison and salmon were 👌👌
M.
Redcliff Cafe is THE place to go in Te Anau. We stumbled across it by chance after visiting Milford sound and fell in love with the decor and the quirks of the place instantly. It has a really beautiful homely vibe and the staff are wonderful. We sat down for dinner (Stewart Island Salmon and Fiordland Wild Venison) and honestly we're blown away by the food. So much so we decided to stay in Te Anau another night to have dinner here again. Wild Hare backstrap and slow cooked pork belly this time.... Amazing. Topped the night off with some live music and meeting some really cool people, honestly we'll never forget this place and will recommend it to everyone visiting Te Anau.
C.
Stopped in for happy hour today (5pm - 7pm) and a drink. Very cute location, relatively good beer selection for the area, however the lady that took our order spoke broken English and seemed to have a bit of an attitude / problem with the questions I had about the beer - not being from the area and all... Adding to the communication issues was that the live music was a little loud and I was personally not a fan of the singing, would have enjoyed it much more if it was JUST acoustic and quieter... Either way, the beer tasted great, price was good, food was well presented and came out on time. So overall while I'll probably not go back, I will at least let others know that it looks to be a nice little place and gets a 4 / 5 from me
O.
I traveled New Zealand with a friend back in November 2017 and we randomly discovered the Redcliff Cafe. The place really sweetend our stay in Te Anau. We had a terrific time with the folks that work at the place. Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere here with great food and beer!
I promised to the lady who worked behind the bar that I would write a review. I know it comes a 'bit' late! Nevertheless, this is dedicated to the friendly people working at this amazing place.
Best wishes,
The two Germans
D.
The best Resturant we had in NZ so far ! We visited twice in 3 days. Highly recommend the salmon, lamb and beef. Salad, soup and bread are super as well! Nice people with great service, love it !
J.
Do make a reservation, this place fills up easily! Octopus is a must!
E.
My steak was served raw, literally. The risotto I ordered the night after looked like cat food. My partner’s venison on the other hand was superb. Very strange. Don’t know what happened in the kitchen. The staff apopogized and were very friendly but I still wouldn’t necessarily recommend this place.
T.
Great dining, super friendly staff.
P.
The venison osso bucco on mushroom risotto was amazing.
A very reasonable price for the place and quality.
4 nights in Te Anau and this was the best by far the best
A.
What a wonderful place to eat out! I visited 4 times during my stay in Te Anau and tasted most of the mains, which were are equally delicious. The desserts are also all high quality. The service was great, and the staff was so kind to help us celebrate my mother's 60th birthday - many thanks! Lots of diverse places to sit and relax, from front easy-going bar to romantic middle section and at the back a lovely garden with flowers and wooden wonders. Totally recommended!
J.
Couldn’t get a table due to own circumstances for a Tuesday night but did stay for drinks and the bar menu. Everything was done perfect and service friendly. Catered for dietary as well! Must try dinner next time in town. 👌👌👌
D.
Reasonable but a little disappointed. Menu and decor a bit outdated with plates on the wall etc. Food portion size large, you won't need more then a main course. The bread portion was quite a large loaf and you'd struggle to eat much else after sharing half of it. Staff very good, overall worth a visit.
U.
This is a beautiful restaurant where you can do some casual dining if you stay at the Millbrook Resort. I would highly recommend the Italian pizza and the Indian curry pizza. both of those are really good along with the shrimp salad.
J.
Great vibes! Bar is open later than dinning hours posted. Friendly staff, great conversation.
D.
Fantastic. Been on holiday, eating out in New Zealand for the last 18 days. This was the best meal so far. Venison to die for, succulent lamb rack, brilliant veg and sauces. Great value too. David.
E.
We didn't make a reservation but luckily got there early (5:15pm) and they were able to seat us. The food was delicious!! Very nice environment & decorations. We sat on the back porch with a mountain view, and they had heaters and provided blankets.
J.
Cute little spot. However, when I first came in, I ordered a drink and wasn't aware that you had to go see someone else to be seated. The girl at the dining room side seemed like she didn't want to seat me. I asked, aren't you serving dinner now? She told me yes. I told her, well, I'm hungry. She finally seated me. From there on out, the service was very good.
I ordered the smoked salmon. It came out and smelled like campfire wood-which I didn't dislike. It just conjured up thoughts of marshmallows and s'mores. However, the flavor was good...very smoky. The sauce was a nice complement. Had the creme brulee for dessert. It was cooked very well. The top was just the right amount of crunchy and the custard was lovely and light.
Prices were a bit high, but it is a nicer restaurant. Great for special occasions.
R.
Wonderful place. Food is just exceptional and so was the service. Good value. Would not hesitate to recommend this place.
C.
For appetizers we had the soup of the day (broccoli and cauliflower), rabbit agnolotti...main course of Duck Confit w pasta, and smoked manuka salmon. Desert of sticky date pudding with ice cream. Everything was superb, incredible flavors and depth to each dish. Prices were very fair. Atmosphere on Christmas Eve was cheery. The service was fantastic. High marks all around.
L.
The hubs and I ate here after a recommendation from our Air B&B host said we could eat out back without a reservation. We enjoyed eating off of the bar menu, and playing checkers on the patio board.
K.
Great food (duck) and friendly service.
M.
Great little gem in Te Anau. Wouldn't have expected such a great restaurant here. A bit hidden off the main road, which is probably good.
We tried to book a table for the evening in the afternoon but there were none left at a convenient time. They recommended to just walk in which we did. We got seated in about 10 minutes.
If you have room for dessert I highly recommend having some!
K.
Steak and meat mains nicely executed, taste and freshness of ingredients wise do not lose out to bigger towns we have been too. We enjoyed the dinner. Daughter enjoyed her Kid meal as well.
A.
Great food, great atmosphere, great town
S.
Ordered the lamb and the venison. Absolutely delicious. The service was great. I especially liked the waitress with blue hair. Very friendly and appeared genuenly interested in talking to all the customers.
L.
Fantastic food! We had a lamb dish and salmon dish. Both were delicious, especially the kumara gnocchi that came with the salmon. Friendly staff as well.
K.
Great food accompanied with great southern hospitality!!
G.
Delicious food. Great vibe.
T.
Probably some of the best food we have had in new Zealand. Absolutely delicious with really interesting and varied flavours. The chocolate souffle was magnificent. The staff were also really lovely, and the building is lovely too. Go here if you are nearby.
R.
We went here after a Milford Sound tour for a couple appetizers and drinks. What a great spot! We had the duck wings and potato wedges - both were excellent.
B.
Great food and awesome atmosphere.
Staff are friendly and helping.
The only thing that we didn't like was being sent to the back of the restaurant though they still had free tables available inside.
E.
Great food every meal impressed
C.
Great service and great meal. 👍Thank you.
L.
Great meal and very convivial hosts. Highly recommend Redcliff cafe for a few drinks. The meals were excellent too. Both in the formal dining area and the bar = where we had the Game platter. Delicious!
N.
Sensational food! Totally blown away by the expertly prepared dishes. The flavours are perfectly balanced and cleverly combined. Unique rustic charm with exquisite gourmet quality food served generously.
The octopus was incredibly tender and succulent, the fish cooked to perfection and their pork crackling was decadent. The corn bread and polenta were so tasty.
All the meals featured smart and creative contrast of flavours and textures.
So impressed that we went back the following night!
S.
Good prices plus innovative and delicious food.
K.
Fantastic food, great service and will defiantly go again when next in TeAnua. Olnly sm criticsim is what was on web site menu was different from what was being offered.
M.
Great very chic little restaurant. Not cheap, but worth every penny. Had dinner here complete with drinks and wine with dinner, so we did splurge a little. Nice choices on the menu and the staff were great and very knowledgeable about the menu selections. Highly recommend this place
S.
Fabulous meal for Mother's day. Great flavors. Great service. Definitely recommend
A.
Our four diners had the pork belly (x2), the salmon & the venison.... all of us cleaned our plates. We started with bread & dips: hu
M.
Ribeye sandwich was great, don't miss this place.
r.
Over-priced. The food is good, but certainly not worth the price tag. Look is refined, but food itself/service not so much. Would recommend trying 2-3 other places rather then wasting your money here.
E.
Very good menu. Salmon dish was exceptional. Nice wines. Shane is a great host. Lovely decor.
G.
Very nice place. Lovely staff, simple but tasty menu. And great wine. 2nd time here and just as nice 2 years later.
K.
Beautiful meal & lovely staff
I.
A hidden gem and a must visit if you're in town and looking for a great dinner. The bar area at the front is often busy but don't let that deter you: the restaurant is in the back and is much quieter.
The food is amazing. Got the hare and it was the best I ever had.
M.
Probably the best wild rabbit I’ve ever had in my life, it was so juicy and tender. The salmon duo was really tasty as well, the addition of the wasabi paste was really interesting. Highly recommend for anyone driving through Te Anau!
K.
Completely unpretentious venue with a standard of cuisine (no mere 'food' at this establishment) that embraces its' claim to LOCAL food. The simple honest flavours are all that is needed with such quality ingredients prepared in the most empathetic way possible. Worth every penny and a few more besides!
J.
I’m a smoked salmon aficionado and thought the alder planked salmon at Anthony’s Bell Street diner in Seattle was never to be bettered. I was wrong. In fact, I came back here two nights in a row to have the Manuka wood smoked salmon with a whiskey brown sugar glaze.
I.
Wonderful meal with wonderful service. Thank you Jess and the other staff for looking after us.
B.
Wow. We went back two nights in a row and might go tomorrow again!! The food us EXCELLENT...Gourmet but down to earth....great ingredients. Great lamb, venison, duck,
and fish.
M.
Food was pretty good but I was disappointed after having dinner here as it has such amazing reviews. First of all we felt a bit unwelcome as we came 15 min before dinner starts, although we were quite prepared to have a drink before. Also, I didn't know I was having sheep brains until halfway through, which I would have appreciated knowing before... :-)
M.
Great food for a good price! Nice location and good ambiance. I can definitely recommend this place. Make sure you make a reservation. Might be the best restaurant in Te Anau.
J.
Very nice, cosy place. Came there in a rainy, cloudy day and was welcomed by nicely smelling flowers on the table. They make a good coffee and the staff is very nice, too. Made my day better!
L.
Friendly service staff, cozy place, good food.
O.
Nice casual old time building and setting along the street. Umbrellas and tables outside. Comfortable n cosy. Noted heating under umbrellas for winter. Food presentations really good and apppealing to the eye. Great service, cheery friendly staff serving. Great place to relax and re energise.
G.
The food was delicious (had lamb and the cheesecake trio) and the atmosphere was great. I loved the vibe in the front bar area. The Pinot flight is an easy way to try a few vintages from the otago region. A solid stop in te anau
D.
Excellent service from the bartender! Enough said
J.
Quaint and quirky place near centre of Te Anau. Food quality is nowhere near what they are charging. This is gastropub food being sold at formal dining prices. As an example, my smoked salmon on ravioli was $39, and was what I would describe as 'average'. The salmon by itself was fine enough, and the ravioli was pretty good, but together they didn't work - and at $39 you expect the reaction to be 'wow' rather than 'meh'. My wife's duck dish was the same - components that were fine alone, but mismatched when combined. Kids platters were fun (though the inclusion of a single strawberry as "fruit" on the menu seems stingy/misleading. Desserts very average, but at $12 at least priced accordingly. Money would be better spent getting slightly worse quality at one of the local pubs in our opinion. In a word, dissapointing.
J.
Absolutely delicious! The hare croquettes, lamb and venison were perfectly cooked and paired well with the vegetables. Good portion sizes, too.
B.
Serve nice food and drinks
P.
Small cottage style resturant. Had to make reservation days in advance, but had great drinks, dinner, wine. Enjoyed staff and meeting fellow travelers in the small bar after dinner.
S.
This restaurant is amazing. We had no idea we were walking into such a fine dining place, but the food was to die for, and the serving sizes amazing. Would drive all the way from Queenstown to eat here again.
C.
Food was very good and it was presented well. We really enjoyed our meal and service was good.
J.
This restaurant is a must do the food and wine is out of this world great vibe and fabulous friendly owners.
R.
The starters were a little underwhelming, but I highly recommend the venison and wild hare dishes. Both were very well cooked and seasoned with amazing side pairings.
D.
Quaint little cafe on a small lane beside the lake. Amazing local food with great portion sizes. The staff is really nice and friendly. Kids meal is huge.
G.
What a well kept secret in Te Anau, fantastic food and excellent service and friendly staff. We could eat there every day.
J.
Always have a wonderful experience here when we’re in the area. The Balinese lady serving us was so kind and helpful ☺️ thanks again Redcliff!
M.
Gorgeous food, literally, we had to take photos.
M.
Excellent dining experience. Great food and good service. Meat dishes a specialty.
R.
Fabulous food and friendly staff. We went without reserving a table but the hostess went out of her way to find space for us whilst we waited at the bar having a drink. We chatted and laughed with the barman who was lovely. It was so good we went back again the next day, having booked a table!
T.
Lovely Restaraunt great Decor. Service was great. Food was beautiful. Staff caring and keen to look after guests. Very popular with local people and visitors.
S.
Nice pub with a bit of character. Enjoyed the hare nibbles! Theres a back restaurant too and it was quiet being set up for the evening, it looked like a great place to eat an evening meal.
p.
Best venison I’ve eaten in my life. Absolutely wonderful service and food. Would happily return.
K.
Great place, good service. Lovely to have some live music on a Friday night. Very welcoming and friendly. Would recommend to anybody, whether travelling through or local 👌.
Y.
Had the angolotti appetizer-- pasta cooked perfectly al dente with steamy savory insides. Then salmon for main-- juicy. Husband had the pulled pork gnocchi-- very hearty potato gnocchi, he loved it. Decent wine selection. Live band was playing. Very cute rustic ambience. The chef winked sexy at me.
P.
Lovely restaurant.. look's like a French ski resort bar and restaurant.. Coffee was great.. so why not give it a try when down Te Anau way....
K.
The beef carpaccio is absolutely amazing! Cant wait to come back to Te Anau so I can eat here again, awesome setting too, rustic and relaxed!
R.
Awesome food and service!
R.
V good food and wine plus good service in a nice setting., for a reasonable cost. Would be highly in demand in Auckland or Wellington.
L.
The food and service are both absolutely impeccable! The octopus was soo tender and the steak and hare were prepared so well! Seriously have to give this place a try if you visit Te Anau!
D.
The best food and best ambiance in Southland. Wild Hare buttered carrots and polenta chips. First time I've eaten Hare and loved it!
Megan the host makes everyone feel like they are returning home. Definately needs to be visited if you are staying in Te Anau or passing through to Milford.
M.
Went for dinner whilst touring New Zealand. Definitely not a cheap eat but the quality of the meat was fantastic. Service was ok. Decor was so so.
J.
Very nice atmosphere, casual dining. Food was superb. Be sure you have the smoked salmon - it's to die for.
A.
Amazing small bar and restaurant. Fantastic local food and ambience and the staff are really friendly. Try the local venison and you won’t go wrong.

Exceptional gourmet food found in a small town with big mountains. The venison was some of the best I ever had.
A.
Great meal in a great atmosphere, everything on the menu we had was cooked to perfection, highly recommend it, and will return every chance we have...
M.
Redcliff was recommended by our hiking guide when we asked about finding real NZ fare. Small and quiet (early evening) with with excellent food. Reservations may be necessary.
A.
I would say this is the best or one of the best restaurants in The Anau. Lovely place and ambiance, the service is perfect and the food very good too!
D.
Best for premium local food and drinks in town
Staff are always friendly 🙂

it's a tardis... small on the outside but it transforms into a lovely large garden style restaurant, perfect for kids to play as well.
R.

Clearly the best place in te anau. Good beer but the superfried snacks that I ordered as appetizer has a ridiculous ammount of oil... didn't try the restaurant but that is not in line with the cool place. Cheers
