Reviews of The Fat Duck
A.
Really nice venue and includes outdoor seating. Staff were really friendly and helpful when we explained that we were on a tight schedule. Food was delicious and arrived a short time after we ordered, despite the place being relatively busy. Love the pumpkin gnocchi!😍
M.
We had great food. It is a bit expensive but portions are generous. Beware, the triple cooked chips that cone with the fish and chips, are not crispy. I asked the waitress if the triple cooked chips were crisper than the fries. She snorted and said " I would hope so, they are triple cooked." So I substituted those for the fries that come with the burger. I was so disappointed when I but into one and it was like eating a baked potatoe. Nothing about it is crispy. Stick with the fries if you want crispy. We had a cheeseburger and fish and chips. Both were delicious.
L.
The food was simply delicious. We had a wait due to level two but that was soon forgot when the food arrived. Our waitress was run off her feet but was very apologetic for the wait. When in TeAnau make sure you stop in for a meal.
K.
Tasty food and good service. Highly recommended if you're in Te Anau.

Delicious menu! Glad we got a seat when we did as it seems to be a popular place to eat. We ordered the Duck Pate and Green Lipped Mussels to start, the Pork Belly as our mains, and the Oreo Cheesecake and Chocolate to finish. Loved the pate and mussels, both were incredibly tasty and the portion sizes are generous. My pork belly was a little dry and tough to chew during some bites, but overall it was a nice dish. The Chocolate was decadent! If you're a chocolate lover, this will definitely hit the spot! We really went big on this dinner but I thought it was well worth it. Would definitely eat here again!
M.
I haven't eaten anywhere recently that I've felt like licking the plate afterwards. All four of us had the Pork Belly and all of us absolutely loved it. Not sure if it was just because we had finished the Kepler Track that it tasted so good but I do know it was delicious... Now we are ordering deserts!
S.
Nice environment. Friendly staff. Yummy food. We ordered burgers for around $25 each. It was really nice! Recommended!
T.
Service was great. Food we had was really good.

K.
Very yummy lunch I had lamb salad tasty lots big wedges of juicy lamb. Good service. Gluten free items on menu.
K.
Very good service and delicious food. It was our first time and it was a really good experience. Highly recommended!
K.
Nice food. Separate vegan menu available on request with a good number of options. Slightly on the expensive side for what it was but good to have multiple choices. Ordered the burger and gnocchi and both were quite good.
P.
Great place was great customer service great view drinks a little bit pricey but still worth it
M.
We had dinner. Place is nice and clean. Service was great. Our food arrived fast. Was delicious. Our only negative is that you need a extra plate for the shells.
S.
Good food, good service and a great selection of beers - what's not to like?
We enjoyed our meal here more than other more formal restaurants in Ta Anau.
But be careful - there's 2 distinct sections - we were originally attracted by the interesting offerings on the bar menu, but when we were offered a table at the adjoining restaurant, discovered it was a different, and more expensive menu.
However, the food was still great, they catered well for a gluten-free request and delivered the food quickly on a busy day.
T.
Great pub style restaurant in town. We came on Saturday night and they even have live music. It's a bit more upmarket than the other pubs in town.
We tried the venison ribs and that was amazing. The lamb shank was not bad either. Plenty of local beer to choose from.
Prices are reasonable for a tourist area, much better than those in Queenstown.
Highly recommended.
K.
Friendly and accommodating staff. Rearranged seating and ensured we were in the shady area while dining outside. Meals and drinks service was quick. Meals good size
K.
The food was good. The fish (on fish) and chips has a little too much batter on it and took away from taste of actual fish.
Was seated fairly quickly but waited 1 hour and 20 minutes to receive our food. A little frustrating when you are seated and order before others and yet, they're food comes out first.
Lemonade = SPRITE

We had to drive all the way to Milford Sound early morning to catch our tour at 10am and then headed to Queenstown after that.. for the longest drive during our trip in NZ, it was quite late for lunch when we reached The Anau for lunch. To prepare ourselves for another 2 hours drive to Queenstown, a good lunch to cure the tummy was a must.
I had many options to choose from but I chose The Fat Duck. The restaurant was quite empty when we arrived and we quickly made ourselves comfortable before ordering our food.
◾1kg Steamed Greenlip Mussels in classic creamy white wine and garlic sauce, served with fried & aioli - we figured out that 1kg of mussels were enough to fill the tummy and we were right
◾We also had the kids meal in the form of 1) cheeseburger and fries, and 2) grilled chicken breast and veggie - a cheaper option compared to when ordering full course.
It was a satisfying lunch.
P.
Main meal: 5/5 - exquisitely cooked venison steak with creamy mashed sweet potato. Relish was a bit sweet but otherwise we couldn't fault this dish.
Starter: 2/5 - was recommended and advertised as tempura prawns but was actually deep fried, battered prawns.
Service: 3/5 - long wait that could've been improved with clearer and more honest communication about expected wait times, and perhaps the provision of free bread. Staff were clearly under pressure from a big group of diners.

Rainy day / we took a milkshake and smoothie (very nice) and stayed 3h before ordering a meal : no problem for the lovely staff ! We took fish and chips (sole) + ribs (JD sauce) ! The fish and chips was excellent, may be lacking some potatoes cause the portion was quite small / the ribs were delicious as well. Very well cooked. Be prepared to be in a crowded environment but the waitresses we had were extremely polite and nice even if the restaurant was full ! The only star missing is maybe for the price. It’s not expensive but it’s not cheap as well !
F&C : 20-25 it depends the fish
Ribs : 22
Fries S/L : 4/7
Smoothies : 6.5
Milkshake : 5.5
L.
Had the Te Mana lamb, hot smoked salmon and broccolini - all delicious!
C.
Excellent food, top in Te Anau. We came here for dinner after being at Milford Sound for the night. We booked as it does get busy especially in peak season. We ordered the Pulled Duck Wontons, very nice recommend if you love duck. I also got the Sirloin Steak with Mushroom sauce, excellent and well cooked to my liking of medium rare. Charlotte ordered the Grilled Lamb Salad and was very impressed with its size and taste especially the lamb. We were full but had to go with the Creme Brulee which was a great choice to finish the meal. The place is great for just drinks also with a bar area and outside area with shade. Definitely one to try when in Te Anau. #thefatduckteanau

Great little pub with a interesting menu. Warm and inviting - I had the pumpkin gnocchi and it was good! Onion rings are delicious, also. Was very busy the rainy midweek night we visited - obviously very popular with locals as well as tourists!
s.
Great selection of beer and wine. Lot of seating but due to popularity, it might be a short wait for a table. They have live music and outdoor seating which seemed nice. Food was good but they could do better with portions on few items, two of us got served three slices of bruchetta which is a shareable plate, would normally expect an even number so we can actually share.
S.
Nice restaurant in Te Anau. The food was great, the mushroom risotto and fish and chips meals. Friendly service at the bar while we waited for a table. I recommend booking a table in the busier months as this place seems to be a local hotspot.
K.
Service was great, beer selection was pretty good, and food was excellent. I got the Pumpkin Gnocchi and it was some of the best I've ever had. Great flavor! I'm giving it 4 stars though because the portion could've been a bit bigger, I was still hungry after.
K.
We enjoyed our meals, no problem when we wanted to move inside, but our hot drinks must have been left sitting somewhere to cool. That's not cool!

Without a shadow of a doubt
Ladies and Gentlemen of The Fat Duck. May I congratulate you of having in my opinion the BEST Food in New Zealand. I have eaten over the past month in many restaurants in the North and South Island and found that the Venison Medallions which I enjoyed and the Lamb Salad my wife had where a delight. The meat was cooked to perfection, the accompaniments tasty, the Jus mouthwatering and the presentation exceeded all expectations. THANK YOU ALL.
c.
Great meal in a great location, the service was good even if it was at times a bit disorganized. Having to wait 40 minutes for a main was disappointing but generally happy with things overall
C.
Nice ambiance, great food. Ordered their house special, Chicken Filo—thin crisp pastry skin, with smoked chicken filling. Their clam chowder is fantastic too, big enough to be a meal on its own.
R.
We went there after visitin Milford Sound. My girlfriend gone before and said delicious so we went again. The food was just perfect with good service! The coffe was fine too! A place to stop if it is in your way.
M.
Venue itself is pretty cozy, staffs are friendly but seemly overwhelmed easily despite not being a full service.
A tad bizarre how you have different servers taking the food order, taking the drink, serving the food, asking about the food and paying at the end. So not sure if my review on the food was even passed on, as the one that gave us our bill seems oblivious about it.
Love the selection of beer and wine in this place, staffs even offered a small taster before we decided on our drinks that night.
Food overall is a tad of a letdown, primary cuz the reviews I’ve seen on this place, as well as the price being charged here (you kinda expect amazing food experience, but not really in the end)
Started off with the duck wontons, mentioned in the menu that it is shredded duck. Presentation is nice, with crispy pastry. The filling however is overly pasty and mushy,, like pate,so that’s very unpleasant. I’d say the overall flavour is not bad, but texture is just off-putting.
Ribeye steak, with mushroom sauce. Way too smoky, I can’t even taste anything else other than that. It is obvious that the heat of the grill is too high as the whole beef is leathery despite just being medium. Not to mention that the steak itself is bland. The mushroom sauce doesn’t help much cuz it is also just as equally smoky. Wouldn’t recommend this at all.
Lamb shank. It bogs my mind that this is the chef’s recommendations. Sure, the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender, presentation is quite pretty, but that’s just about it. It lamb itself has no flavour whatsoever, as if it was cooked inside a vacuum bag all by itself, and covered in gravy when orders come in. The gravy doesn’t do much justice too, as it is just way too sugary, all you can taste is sweet. Again wouldn’t recommend this either.
Fish and chips. Finally, something redeemable, but not entirely so again. The fish that day was gurnard, quite a generous portion, well fried and well seasoned succulent fish. Would happy grade the fish 9/10. But! If only the tartar sauce was better: It is way too rich and creamy with none of the tanginess, I wouldn’t let it close to my fish after tasting it just once. Chips, your standard fair that doesn’t stand out as great or bad. Coleslaw, probably one the worst I’ve tasted in a long while: the whole thing is just bitter upon bitter, dressing is way too heavy and rich. I can’t believe that I would support KFC’s mushy coleslaw over this, I’m sorry but it’s true. And I don’t care that the waitress tried arguing that they’ve sold many of it that day, cuz it is simply unpalatable.
Dessert, cheesecake. Frankly I wouldn’t go back for the cheesecake. It is obvious corners has been cut, when the cheesecake flavour is below that of a frozen supermarket cheesecake. But at least the base of the cake it well made. I would however vouch for he coffee-flavoured ice cream, now that is something worth the flavour. If it wasn’t for the accompanying ice cream, I probably won’t be able to eat much of the cake itself.
Overall I would say the dining experience here is that of below average. And it’s rather sad considering it being so highly regarded, and highly pricey too.
I’d happily come back for the bar drinks, but not the dining sadly.
A.
Delicious steaks, loved the hand-cut chips - and friendly service. Meals a little pricier (~$30-40ish for mains), but the food was yummy so... Worth it IMHO. Good selection of drinks, teas and coffee's too!
Z.
Very nice service, extremely nice staff, and extensive wine menu characteristic of New Zealand. Picked a light lunch option and the food impressed. Is it a rival to Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck in Bray, UK?
J.
Great food! Do make reservations at least a day before, they do get busy as they are very popular. Nice service crew as well! Recommended!!
F.
Food was good. We ordered the cod and lamb shank. Both were wonderful. Service was quick too
D.
Awesome Lamb salad! Seriously, one of the best I've had. De-lish! Washed down with a lovely drop (Panhead). Nice chilled ambiance...lovely setting. Dine inside, or alfresco. Friendly staff & great menu options. Highly recommend.
A.
Great selection of beers and really yummy food. We got the duck salad and the venison goulash and both made me say "wow" out loud as I tasted them. The service was also great and we never waited long for anything. My wife enjoyed the cider cocktails too.
N.
Delicious pate and mussels. Friendly staff and good atmosphere. Expected okay pub grub but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meals!
S.
Wonderful food and cocktails. Very busy so be sure to book a table or turn up early to avoid disappointment!
K.
Have been traveling around the south for the last week and this was the best meal we have had so far. Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food for a 'pub' establishment. Compliments to the chef on that one!
L.
Great atmosphere staff are very friendly. The service was very good. Food was nice.
J.
Superb staff, fantastic food, and awesome atmosphere. Thanks so much Fat Duck. Duck wonton an absolute treat!
G.
The service was great and the food was top quality. Despite COVID a great atmosphere in the restaurant.
B.
Really nice place to have dinner. Kids meal was good for a kid, steak was great, and the mussels are really delicious. Kids drinks are very curious and nice. Recommend the ‘Traffic Light’ drink from kids menu, looks cool and tastes great!
C.
Loved all of our food. Great selection of beers. Brandy sauce really took our breathe away.
K.
Very overpriced and the 45 day old sirloin had grissle through it and was served with no vegetables or salad for $44 which is just not good value
I.
Fantastic service with amazing food!!! Me and my partner have been travelling through the South Island and this has to be the best spot that we have come across so far. Amazing service helping us with selecting our meals. Would recommend 100%
T.
Had a fairly decent meal here. Bit expensive but it is Te Anau... Beef burger was pretty good, a little overcooked but I'm fussy. Not too bad really, nice atmosphere and the staff were equipped with great smiles, so thanks for that!
S.
Friendly staff, good selection of beer. The best thing that we got was the mussel dish. Went back there to eat a second night, and had the steak and the special of the night which was hare with gnocchi.
A.
Great dinner spot. Just what we needed after a cold wet day at Milford Sound. We had the chowder, gnocchi and risotto balls. Food was yummy and staff were attentive despite being quite busy.
A.
Wonderful food and atmosphere. Slightly more on the pricey side, but well worth it! Make sure you book ahead, it was very popular.
M.
Amazing variety of food.
P.
Coffee is good. Food is alright, a bit high price.
S.
We had such a tasty dinner at the Fat Duck! the service was excellent and the food was FIRST CLASS!!!
I highly recommend this restaurant!
J.
Great food and great service! Stopped by here 2 days in a row for lunch as we were heading our way up North to Milford Sound and back south.
S.
Absolutely loved it...make sure you book as soon as you get in to town- you won't be disappointed. Staff are so friendly and helpful, great local beer and wine selection!
J.
Delicious food, think the waitress was a bit shy, but the food was amazing. Great variety of pub food and they really focus on where their ingredients come from, there's plenty of info on the back of the menu about where it comes from - and it's the highest quality.
J.
Nice food. Staffs were nice. Food have standard.
n.
Got burgers take away. Called on a busy night. They were honest and told me the kitchen was busy, always respect that. Gave me a time for pick up and it was ready on time and fresh. Got the chicken and beef burgers. Both were very good. Staff were friendly.
E.
The Fat Duck met all our expectations. Great atmosphere, variety of menu options, quick service and we would eat there every night of our stay if we could. Nice live music too. Highly recommend
D.
Very flavourful and balanced food with good portion sizes and great value for the quality! We had the market fish and grilled lamb salad. The salad wasn't drowned in sauce unlike in many other restaurants! Instead it was topped with a fresh tzatziki that complimented the lamb, cherry tomatoes, and feta. Pieces of soft pumpkin and crunchy pumpkin seeds were a unique and delicious addition.
The market fish changes depending on availability, fresh from Dunedin. It was served on top of a potato salad and tomato corn salsa. My Russian guests loved the fish and potato salad due to its familiar flavours.
The waitresses were nice, as was the manager who was honest about the expected wait time during their busy time.
Seating is available inside, outside, or on the lawn with beanbags.
D.
Great experience, just drove over from Dunedin and landed there for dinner, the food was great and very quick, which was awesome because we were hungry.
They had a vegan menu another big thumbs up because my partner is vegan and it just makes ordering so much easier.
The staff were great, just the right amount of attention to your needs without feeling intrusive.
Place is warm and clean with great food and service, highly recommend.
P.
The food here was divine. Had starters and mains. Would recommend.
K.
Delicious food, fairly priced and excellent, quick service!
Try the prosciutto wrapped chicken, it was divine. Make sure to get a glass of their tasty mulled wine too!
M.
3rd time here with a 2 year separation each visit and still putting out good food. Absolutely excellent service from the staff with food arriving promptly and correctly. An absolutely awesome selection for food, with all 4 of our dishes ordered being delicious and interesting. Even when we asked for a custom cocktail that was previously unavailable the staff were absolutely willing to assist as and we walked away after having an awesome experience.
R.
Service was slow but the place was packed because of the great food and staff.
C.
It is quite a limited menu but they know how to cook it brilliantly. My biggest issue was although my pork belly pie was delicious I was very envious of my wife's steak and duck fried potatoes. The next biggest issue was there was such a large portion of the hand cut fries, which were beautiful, that I had to leave half of them.
They staff were very friendly and helpful.
D.
Great cozy spot. Best pie I've ever had. Very kid friendly with colouring in pencils and a kids menu.
J.
Food and cocktails were delightful! Went there for lunch and dinner. The popcorn bowl 🥣 👌
P.
The lamb rack cooked perfectly and the sauce for steak was so good.
J.
This place was so good we went a second time during our 4 day stay in Te Anau. We sat outside the first time and inside the second time, enjoyed live music, and received very quick service.
Highly recommend the burgers, the lamb, and the cheesecake!
R.
We are lucky enough to have a chair given by a friendly staff. The place is packed with customers listening to amazing acoustic songs The food are well plated, my lamb shank melt in my mouth and the steak is perfect medium rare with delicious sides. Definitely are coming back!
N.
Wandered in here for dinner on a Saturday night - was told a 30-40 minute wait at the bar for a table but we didn’t mind as it was still early. Very pleasant helpful staff, the food was excellent - we had the venison ribs and mussels, both were delicious. They clearly turn the tables quickly here, with prompt service - if you don’t mind that, definitely visit - you’re in for a treat.
T.
A delightful little spot!! We came on a cold, rainy winter evening, had no wait at all, and were seated near the fireplace with blankets. Warm, delicious food, very friendly and attentive staff, and reasonably priced. Their seafood chowder was filling and they have a great wine/beer/cocktail selection! Highly recommend!!
L.
Food great, caters well for families
M.
Staff was very friendly. Food was very average. Within a few minutes our meals were served. I can't imagine they make everything fresh.. My girlfriend had the lamb salad. This was quite a small meal and the lamb wasn't tasty. I had the lamb shank. The lamb was very tasteful and well cooked, but accompanied by a limited amount of vegetables. In my opinion there are better places to have dinner in Te Anau...
J.
The food should be above average in town. Nice duck salad. Nice sauce but just a bit sweet for me.
I can say there's a passionate chef there in the kitchen. Good work!
J.
My wife and I enjoyed this restaurant, the food was prepared correctly and in a respectable amount of time for a fully packed restaurant at dinner time. It is a little bit on the expensive side but honestly not terrible for the quality and quantity of food that you get. Staff was friendly, approachable and accommodating. The pricing would be similar to that of
Milestones or The Keg (for the Canadians and Americans reading)
J.
Great food and atmosphere, however it’s very expensive for what you get. We ended up getting fish and chips from the pub straight after as we spent over $100 as we were still starving.
O.
A ‘must do’ while in Te Anau. The service was good and the food exceptional. The desserts are the best I’ve seen in terms of quantity. They’re delicious too. It really was every little bit as tasty as the menu promised. A must return to!!
A.
Meal is amazingly good. Would go again
M.
Went there recently for happy hour and dinner. The selection of wines was great and so were the beers.Unfortunatly the choice of menu wasn't to our liking. The staff were excellent
P.
Wonderful place, the food is cery food and the staf is really friendly. The cocktail prepared by the barnan is excellent. Try the Bluelagoon.
J.
Our wedding anniversary and they had a congratulations card for us at the table. I have several dietary issues and they planned ahead for us. The food was delicious and well presented and the staff were friendly, attentive and helpful.
S.
Loved the food here! We had the popcorn chicken (amazing) to start with the venison goulash and lamb shank as mains. Perfect grub after a long day in the fjords! Very flavoursome, venison and lamb were cooked just right.
Staff were great too, made us feel really at home and were attentive without making us feel like they wanted to get us straight out the door.
Think some of the reviewers here forget they aren't in eating at a Michelin star restaurant sometimes - the food here was great all things considered. Would love to come back.
L.
We came early and they managed to squeeze us in even though most of the tables were booked for later. Food was delicious and delivered quickly for our kids which was appreciated. Certainly was getting busy when we left.
G.
Nice café. Green lipped mussels were good.
S.
Wow. Well we were going to skip because of the name, both fat and duck is a turnoff to our normal fare. But the proprietor of our accommodation listed it as his number one, and the crowds seem to back that up. We had the market fish and the fish & chips and both were very tasty (and we eat little deep fried food but the fish & chips plate, along with all the dishes coming out of the kitchen, looked tasty). The service, even with it packed, was excellent. This should be the top place for your dinner out in Te Anau.
D.
Food was good. Staff really friendly except mgr who snapped at everyone coming in for not having a booking and giving a very clear time limit we had with tables
K.
Came looking for Venison and fell in love with their Duck. Their duck Wontons were so nice. But their Crispy Duck Salad is up there with my all time favourite dishes anywhere. Texture and taste is first rate.
E.
These guys are wonderful. Our food was great and the beer was cold. I had the lamb salad and it was lamb like you see in posh cooking shows - blushing, tender and delicious. I'm so glad I got it!
But tbh, the 5 star rating comes from more than just the food. We went with our two horrible children (2 & 5) who had been up adventuring in Milford Sound since 5.30am and were totally feral. We tried to keep them outside but the winds drew us indoors and it was momentarily hell on earth for us and everyone around us. Cactus hour had HIT.
The staff were unbelievably beautiful to us, they presented us with a box of toys, an amazing kids menu (real food for kids WINNING!) and one waitress was just so sweet to them and grabbed them some gorgeous pink drinks which went down very, very well.
If you're a parent and you're reading this, you'll understand how important it is to have a restaurant bend over backwards to help you with feral children. I can't compliment these people highly enough. To top all of that off with amazing food? Incredible. This restaurant deserves your money and your love.
Thanks guys! From the depths of my tired mum soul. Xxxx
W.
Incredible fresh seafood at pretty reasonable prices. Mussels was the star
N.
Seriously outstanding service, fantastic food, with the mushroom dumplings sensational, the market fish devine and a great portion size.
After 4 nights in Te Anau this was the pick for atmosphere, price and good quality
C.
Really nice! A little expensive but that's to be expected anywhere in Te Anau. Very much enjoyed the vegan options, especially my chocolate mudcake dessert hehe
M.
Beautiful food and accommodated our family for the All Black game. Attentive, kind wait-staff - we loved it!
J.
With food allergies, it's difficult to eat well while traveling. The Fat Duck managed to serve both my husband and myself two excellent meals. Our only regret was that we could only eat here once! The venison medallions were both tender and flavorful without a heavy sauce. The pork belly was succulent and sweet. The veggie side dishes could have starred on their own merit: smashed parsnips plus seasonal veggies bright citrus potatoes with perfectly cooked carrots and broccoli. Yum! The staff was incredibly accommodating, the draft beers were fresh & flavorful. The guitarist/singer added to the ambiance. 😍 From looking at the presentations and chatting with the other diners, you really can't make a bad meal choice here, just don't miss out!
L.
Good beer selection, great nibbles, especially the popcorn chicken... YUM! Nice outside dining and they cater to dogs with a water bowl.
L.
The food was definitely above average. I had a seafood pasta, and it was cooked perfectly. Also, was a good price. In addition, the live entertainer they had that night was actually quite excellent, especially as he just sang covers, so no random nonsense no one has ever heard of. It was a nice relaxing place in all.
N.
Good steak and good service
L.
The food was really good! Steak perfect medium/rare. But, service was to fast! Still chewing on the garlic bread, and a minute later the mains where there.. To fast for us..
B.
Very Busy so try and book. Popularity shoes it’s a good choice. Hubby absolutely loved the popcorn chicken. Different menu from standard restaurants which is nice for a change and something for everyone. Service was friendly, professional and timely. Definitely Recommend!
P.
We have just had 3 nights in te anau and went to the fat duck 1st and 3rd night. Absolutely outstanding food and service! 1st class. Highly recommended 👌 👍
w.
Very popular. If you can book first. Might have to wait if you don't. Food is fantastic and the prices are fair. The staff is very friendly and accommodating . Their mulled wine is a must.
C.
The chicken burger is crisp and delicious, with tart pickled red onions, greens and cheese. The place is filled with diners so we had to sit outside. Thankfully it didn't take long for the food to arrive because it was getting chilly in the spring evening.
B.
Really good and simple food. The chowder was really good and filling and the mushroom risotto is better than most smaller local joints. They also has a decent beer and wine selection as well. The staff were also very relaxed and nice
J.
Food was great. But drink service took far too long and tried to quietly charge me for a drink that I didn't get until we went to pay for dinner.
B.
Really good burgers! With good selection of beers. Friendly staff.
A.
Nice atmosphere and decent food. The garlic bread was just a loaf supersaturated with melting butter (could have been a meal to myself), though the burger was good. I would probably try out other restaurants in the area before coming back.
M.
Food was very good. Service was hard to explain...I am getting used to the casual, inattentive nature of service in NZ, but the game plan at the Fat duck was odd. They told you there was a wait but then there was also a wait once you were seated. You literally couldn't order an appetizer until the kitchen said so. Additionally, we we're never asked if we needed a drink...even with empty glasses early in the meal. Maybe this is more common than I know but it was new to me. We were really hungry and would have gone somewhere else if we had known. That all said, the food was very good.
R.
Very tasty food! Nice staff and place!
B.
Looks a lot nicer inside than the outside facade. They not only managed to get us in quickly in spite of being busy, but were experienced enough to know that, with kids, we wouldn't want our order to be behind a large party/celebration and so they made sure we knew to order quickly and they hustled to get our order in. Many, many kudos for doing so. Food is tasty too! Fish and chips was excellent.
P.
The Fat Duck was a great recommendation from our motel owner. We ate market fish, (grilled salmon), lemon rissoto, broccoli, pumpkin puree. Fish croquetts, beer, . Everything was perfectly seasoned and prepared. Presentation was excellent. I would highly recommend eating there and wanted to go back our second night.
K.
They were able to accommodate our group of 12 and everyone enjoyed their meal. Great cocktails here.

No wonder this Gastropub is so popular, the food and service are superb, and their offering clearly a cut above the rest. Flounder served in buttery caper juices, medalioned potatoes and a fabulously crunchy salad made for a beautifully balanced and stylish looking meal. Attentive unobtrusive service, Fat Duck is clearly runs a well organised kitchen and service team. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Te Anau looking for a classy tempting place to dine. You can pop in for a coffee too!
M.
Waited a long time to be served for drinks and our order. The maitre D looked liked she had been sucking lemons all night and had a personality to boot.
The Waiting and bar staff were pleasant and well communicated.
The meal serving was average for what we paid however it was very tasty but leaft hungry.
T.
The wait staff and the bar staff came across as very friendly, but the food quality was sub-par at best. My girlfriend ordered a mushroom risotto and I ordered a chicken burger. The burger had almost no flavour and the texture of the chicken was just awful. The mushroom risotto was watery and also lacking flavour. It was more expensive than other places I've eaten in New Zealand too, which made the experience more disappointing!
H.
Dinner for 4.
Excellent service. Disappointed in the muscles - most hadn't had beards removed. Did taste good tho. Riley and gunnar were excellent. Overall a good experience.
K.
Fantastic food and good service. I had the pumpkin gnocchi and it was fabulous and my boyfriend had the lamb and it was delectable. Wish we could have gone back a second time.
A.
Decent food here and the staff are very friendly. The only thing is the location on this one, being on the roundabout the furthest spot away from the lake. However everything else is great.
B.
Service and food was good (but not great) and above average cost. Dining area was a bit dated and lacked ambience. Reviews promised a lot so perhaps we were expecting too much. Solid but not great although the bar area looked more inviting with more atmosphere (PS The kids would probably add a star because of the free WiFi).
L.
Get the popcorn chicken as an appetizer. It was honestly the best thing I've had in New Zealand so far! It could stand to have a little more food to it but overall the taste was on point.
I.
Wonderful food and great staff. We had the Italian style slow cooked ragu and the battered gournard. Best to book here as it's rightfully popular. Also, happy hour is 4-6pm ☺👍
D.
Just ate at the fatbuck, very busy had to wait an hour for a table, then ended sharing a table with 3 others. No problem there.Eventually got our mains at other almost finished theirs. We ordered a rib eye and lamb curry. Steak ok! But lamb !!!! Lamb shoulder there was hardly any lamb, i think they ran out of lamb and bulked it up with some veg. Not impressed, if i was not with 3 strangers i would have sent it back. Most disappointed. Honestly just a wee smattering of lamb pieces. Grrrrr
M.
Drink and food is good but the staff is quite clueless. More concerned about cleaning up unfinished plates than knowing about their drinks and dishes. Decent bar hangout area and outside seating. Dinner area is nice and somewhat fancy.
O.
The dishes are cooked with love. Delicious food and good waiters attention. Recommended! good price and quality rate. The falafel pita and chicken really good. Even the green tea was good.
R.
One of the best place to have a great feed at Te Anau. It is a bit pricey but hey it is worth every penny. The pancake was fantastic! It is children friendly place, accessible to wheelchair, heaps of parking. Toilet facilities are clean and tidy. Don't miss this place.
c.
To the person who complained about the prices, charging for garlic bread and claiming the place is a tourist trap.
1) Te Anau survives as a tourist destination for people traveling to Milford. Calling a restaurant a tourist trap is simple calling that place good at capturing business. That's their job.
2) I'm from the states, we aren't used to paying for bread with dinner, but in NZ it appears to be the norm at restaurants of this caliber. Garlic bread is also a norm here, it came with our prawns AND my salmon pasta, both were excellently tasty.
3)The prices that were mentioned might be high for an every night dinner, or someplace not conveniently located or with a poor atmosphere, but Fat Duck is neither of those.
I loved it, we actually stopped here for breakfast too. Their muffins are strange, more bread than muffin, but surprisingly delicious. (Doughy v cakey)
H.
We came to The Fat Duck twice for lunch and breakfast and all of our dishes were just delicious. Their staff is very nice and friendly, the ambiance is cosy and relaxed, there are plenty of parking options around and I definitely recommend to stop by on your way to or from Milford Sound. Everything was beautiful, thank you The Fat Duck! :)
D.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, we were after a comfortable place to have a good feed after a long day hiking. The fat duck have the best seafood chowder in the South Island! We also shared a delectable rosé.
My partner left her sunglasses on the table after we left back for Queenstown and the staff were kind enough to go above and beyond and send them back to our Melbourne property! Would highly recommend to any Te Anau traveler :)
C.
Great food...accomodated our needs in swapping sides, happy, cheerful staff, very reasonable cost-wise
k.
The venison ribs we're succulent and super tender, and a bit spicy, the venison medaillons were a delight, tender meat, with a delicious sauce, and the best burger we ate so far in NZ. To be recommended
A.
Great food and service was excellent, highly recommend the venison. We had to wait a bit due to this being peak season and packed but they did everything they could to accommodate us even though we were walk ins and very concerned that we were happy with everything. These people care about their customers, food and service.
D.
My wife and we’re directed there for great pub food. However, we found their warm duck salad was outstanding. It was the perfect meal. Thank, Fat Duck!
c.

If you're in Te Anau, you should definitely try The Fat Duck. The service is great, the food is fantastic and whole place is clean, warm and welcoming.
Try the tiramisu, it's the best I've had.
T.
Absolutely delightful place. Happy hour beer prices are great. Food portions are huge. Inside and outside seating is comfortable. Staff is friendly. It's a nice place to relax for a bit.
M.

C.
A gastro pub with live music.A guy on guitar with a fabulous voice. Knew every song. Good food and vibe.
J.
Would give 5 star if we didn’t have to wait 1 hour for our food. Food was very tasty.
A.
Excellent dishes. Each dish had its individual taste. Staff gave very good service.
C.
Nicest bar/restaurant in the area. Great food, service and beer selection. It is easy to find and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I recommend making a booking during busier times. Also take advantage of happy hour for cheaper beers!
N.
Food ok, but don’t get fooled by the “Happy Hour” sign as this only applies to a house wine. Also has an irritating approach to bookings, so with hindsight I would have gone elsewhere.
C.
A nice place which is always busy as they have a happy hour, and serve good food and drink. Food we had from here was very good, and reasonably priced, so worth a visit. They also have a really nice looking snack menu with lots of varying dishes you can order for lunch or just a bite to eat.
B.
Great service and excellent meals. So good we had dinner twice when we were in Te Anau. highly recommended
C.
Excellent food. The best in Te Anau. We had a great, tasty meal and the service was prompt and attentive. Would recommend making a reservation as the place is very popular (given the amazing food, is that really surprising?)
V.

J.
First time to eat at The Fat Duck. My son and I were treated quite well and we really enjoyed the food. If and when I am able to return to Te Anau , I will look forward to enjoying another brilliant meal there.
As an aside, my love to Mary (née Holland) formally of the Moose.
