Reviews of HUHU Cafe

We had such an enjoyable dinner here last night. We often stop and have a dinner at the Waitomo Pub but that was full, so we tried the Huhu cafe. Service was fast, friendly and professional. Food was awesome, especially the lamb. Very good local beer selection and the wine list was great. Great setting on a hot summer day too. We'll be back :-)

Its not that the food is bad it’s just so bland my wife and I thought we had COVID after eating there. Thankfully the salad was on point and flavourful. For $30 a plate I either expect more food or a better quality. I guess you pay for the view.

We recently dined at Huhu and what a fantastic experience we had. The food was outstanding and enjoyed it so much we went back for the second night and again outstanding. The atmosphere and staff (Alesha) were fabulous couldn't fault a thing. Coming Back in a couple of weeks and will be booking in. You beat Auckland restaurants hands down, well done...

Delicious food with a beautiful view and excellent service. We had the sirloin & the lamb and cleaned both plates. And the sticky toffee pudding is a must! Highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing food and friendly staff!! Couldn't fault anything.
We got salt & pepper squid and the crispy buttermilk chicken as entrees (they're actually light meals) and both were tender and flavourful. For mains we had the pork hock and the potato gnocchi which were incredible. The soufflé was absolute perfection and so nice with the black doris ice cream! Haven't had a meal like this in a long time and the price was awesome as you get huge portions for your money. I would come back all the time if I was from here. Thank you so much Huhu for the best service and food I've had in a long time.

Pretty pricey establishment in Waitomo.
The food quality is good and the service was reasonable.
Do expect a reasonably long wait however. (it was a weekend and the restaurant wasn't full but there was one big table shred of us).
I would give the Kumara skins a pass next time - expected more crunch less char, but maybe my expectations were a little unreasonable.
The fish & chips were good - very light airy batter. But a bit more fish would have been nice, the chips were a little average. The mushroom fettuccine was delicious but a tad oily at the end (maybe due the choice of cheese?).

As nowhere else in Waitomo was open (8pm on a Saturday night) we had no choice but to visit Huhu. They were clearly understaffed and the young people working there looked exhausted. Still, we were served lovely food with a smile and would love to go back under normal circumstances. Thanks for being so accommodating!

My GOD this place is good. After visiting for lunch and being blown away by the risotto balls, we travelled an hour in total to and from our hotel just to eat here for dinner. I'm very picky and everything we had was absolutely delicious, the risotto balls were out of this world.
Drink selection was great too, selling both half and full pints, with a nice cider on tap.
If you're visiting Waitomo or in the area, do yourself a favour and eat here, I can promise you won't regret it. The waitress even remembered us from lunch and asked us how the glowworms were - an easy 5/5!!

Had an average experience here today. Arrived at 3:30pm for a few drinks and food and from the start we felt like an inconvenience. We asked for a table outside and were told we could but they would need to clean a table (uh then yes please). At this point we clearly heard the manager tell the waitress “no more people after this”. The whole staff seemed more focussed on cleaning up after lunch. Menus were slow to arrive, we received water glasses but no water. We ordered 4 plates of food and these were actually great, however when we went to order a couple more we were told the kitchen was closed until 5:30. Totally understand sometimes places need to operate on a reduced menu outside key hours, but it was odd to completely close down and not forewarn us of this (last orders?). We would have stayed and ordered more food and drinks but had no choice but to leave. I guess only go at main meal times?

Incredible food and perfect size portions - the duck was cooked well and the kumara puree was perfectly smooth! Quick service and didn't have to wait long at all for our food. Highly recommended!
