Reviews of Francesca Wanaka
Definitely a must-do dinner spot while in Wanaka. Highlights of our meal were the polenta fries, tartufo pizza, chicken pizza (with vegan cheese that actually melted and was good), the mushroom risotto (special of the day), and the tiramisu. Oh my godddd the tiramisu was good. We ended up spending about $50 per person for a three course meal plus drinks. Can’t wait to go back!
What I like about Francesca’s is that the food is very fresh and carefully cooked.
The taste is not so strong that you’d feel like having lots of water after the meal. Instead, it is very balanced and satisfying. I will definitely think about their food after leaving Wanaka.
Food was superb. Polenta chips, margherita pizza, vegetarian gnocchi, tirimisu and chocolate mousse. As good as we had in Rome.
Highlight was our waiter, such an awesome dude! Friendly and chatty and made our evening. Thank you 😊
A flawless experience. It was really easy to book a table and all the staff were very friendly and professional. I ordered some polenta fries for starters, margarita pizza for my main and the tiramisu for dessert. The fries were crispy and delicious, the pizza had an awesome crust and the tiramisù was smooth and creamy. Overall everything was great.
Awesome service with good local banter, really nice seating outdoors near stream, pizzas are amazing and accommodated special requests. Highly recommend.
In winter they have these little garden shed things just fit for two outside. Super cozy and somehow makes the experience extra special. All the staff here are just amazing, super friendly yet also remaining professional at the same time. To follow through with the high standards, every dish we had, was just so good! If you are staying in Wanaka, make sure you dine here at least once.
The potato skin is a MUST order. It’s the BEST and become the highlight of our trip in Wanaka. No other restaurant can beat that. Please order the potato skin and join my cult 😂 another thing that catch me is the wee green house hut(?) Its outside the restaurant but so cute and so private. It’s not cold at all, they provide hotties and heater. Very very highly recommended. Will definitely come back
I personally rated.
5stars with Great attitude customer service, very friendly staff.
Delicious food.
So far so good, will update after my meal.
Edit: I ordered the gnocchi with beef, it tastes spectacular, meal size isn't very large but the taste makes up for it. Will update after desert.
I must say I laughed off the reviews commenting on the portion size as I don’t normally find small portions to be a problem at most restaurants but in this case I have to agree. Had the vegetarian pasta which mentioned capers as one of the toppings yet literally only ONE caper arrived on the dish. Not only were the portion sizes pitiful but the toppings very stingy. What we got was tasty but we both left hungry despite sharing a starter and each having a pasta and a shared a salad which is extremely uncommon for us. Have to mention the potato skins which were exceptional.
Excellent service, a french lady (sorry we didn't get her name) took care of us all the way during our lunch and she was wonderful. Tiramisu is a no brainer, go for it! Pizza was good, nothing too crazy in my opinion but it was good and fast! The gnocchis were really really few (seems to be like this everywhere in Queenstown as well) but also amazing. Great combination of flavours and ingredients. Would have love to get a few extra. After all, they're almost $30. Other than that, wonderful experience and I will recommend to my friends 👍
Amazing italian food, the tiramisu is seldom done right but it was a real treat here! The staff was really nice, we arrived after a hike with two tired small kids and they made us a wonderful dinner in no time. Our best restaurant experience in the south island!
A great evening. Food excellent and well presented. A fabulous place to relax and enjoy. There were some hiccups, but these were very quickly sorted out by one of the very pleasant Assistant Managers, Peter Stewart. The original waiter had some difficulty with english. One was the mains were delivered before the entrees'.
Peter was quick to have it rectified, including having the mains completely redone.
The way things were sorted is a tribute to management being aware of customers being important, and their custom valued and appreciated. This in no way detracted from a great evening. Bookings are essential.
Go and Enjoy. You'll be pleased you did.
Cozy restaurant serving classic Italian food done well. Not spectacular, but simple and good. Love the beef cheek gnocchi, but the prawn rigatoni is bit tasteless.
Beef gnocchi dish was quite nice. Gnocchi was well cooked. Soft and chewy. All was good with the glass of white wine. Risotto was tasty though it wasn't too flavorful. It was comforting. It was the greenest risotto ever I had in my life. When we asked for more cheese to be sprinkled, the staff was so willingly brought more grinded cheese. Wanted to try more dishes but we didn't have any day left. Maybe next time.
Had a meal here every time Me and my husband visit Wanaka. The food are awesome, and the staff are very friendly.
We tried pizza, pasta and a bruschetta, and everything was really good. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, they keep checking if everything is okay. I'm picky about pizza, but it was cooked perfectly and tasted great. The pasta (casarecce alla norma) was also al dente. Would visit again!
Always a great experience, especially love the House made potato gnocchi, braised beef cheeks, gremolata, pecorino!! Amazing!! 👍🏻 👌
Every time I visit Wanaka I always stop by Francescas for a meal and they have never failed to disappoint.
The polenta chips and the potato skins are a must. This time we tried the carbonara and lamb ragu pasta, both were well flavoured and the pasta was cooked to perfection. The portion size was just right as we struggled to finish the entree and the pasta.
The wine selection isn't huge but that didn't bother us too much.
Lovely service and very attentive staff.
Will come back again next time we visit Wanaka.
Food: 3.5⭐️ (saved by cannoli)
Service: 5⭐️
Value : 5⭐️.
Friendly service, smiley and genuine staff.
Great location and nice ambience, good view of the mountain.
Entree and pasta was just ok, nothing special. But I really enjoy the cannoli. .
Will definitely visit this place again.
Paid my third visit to Francesca’s last week when I was down mountain biking in Wanaka. Food as always was delicious and served with a smile. Feels like home. Thank you.
Had our first night in Wanaka with the family this Summer, have to write the post because the service of the young blonde guy was first class. Made the whole experience and nothing was a problem. Will be back. Cheers
Vegetarian Gnocchi with broad beans, peas and Gorgonzola creamy sauce.
Spectacular!
Gnocchi was crispy on the outside but melt-in-your-mouth soft on the inside. The sauce was perfectly balanced and the Gorgonzola flavour wasn’t overpowering. Simply amazing.
When you're in Wanaka, please give this restaurant a visit...it'll worth the time.
I love it when I found a nice restaurant to eat after an exhausting drive. You know.. during my trip to NZ, I drove at an average of 250km a day and I was the only driver. Not that I mind about that but apart from a well-deserved sleep, a good meal would definitely make me happy. So on our way from Lake Tekapo to Te Anau - the second longest journey that I'd driven during the trip - we stopped by Wanaka for lunch.
A wine supplier cum good friend of mine introduced two (2) places for me in Wanaka and Francesca's being one of the two. While it doesn't come with lake view, it has the cosy and friendly atmosphere to it. From the moment I entered until I left the premise, the service was ever ready whenever I needed it.
◾Francesca's favourite cured meats with focassia $19 - we wanted to order their meat and cheese platter initially but knowing that the portion is big here in NZ, we settled just for the meat and boy we didn't regret the decision. The meat was filling enough and the son stole few pieces and said "good"
◾Regina Margherita $23 - seeing how the kids gobbled up the entire pizza without fuss made it all worthwhile.
◾Prawn with rigatoni pasta, prawn & tomato sugo, basil, toasted almonds $28 - now this is something that I would order everytime. Everything was spot on for this pasta dish and we felt like ordering a second helping.
◾House pouring white and red wines in stemless glass - it felt empty without wine to wash down the marvellous food.
The other half actually commented that Wanaka was worth stopping for a night, as she loves the vibes of this lakeside town. One good thing about this restaurant is that they still use conventional wood-fired oven pizza resulting in the beautiful aroma of the crust.
Note: they also have branches in Dunedin and Christchurch.
Great food and amazing staff. We had a 2 year old with us. A waitress took her to see the pizzas being made and cooked, and she thoroughly enjoyed it.
We had an early dinner at this wonderful Italian restaurant. We had some fantastic Pinot Noir wine, a mushroom pizza (was ok), a small side salad (nice), and a mushroom risotto (5 stars!). They also had a vegan pizza. The location was a bit hidden but witg today’s technology findable ;) Absolutely recommendable! Better to reserve a table if you go there at peak times.
Food is amazing and so is the staff. The salmon was tender and delicious and the beef cheeks were cooked perfectly. The dessert was great aswell.
I must say, the Prawn with rigatoni pasta, prawn & tomato sugo, basil, toasted almonds was really good! Definitely no complaints about that and would recommend it!
On the other hand, the margherita pizza was good but not great. It's actually a little soggy.
The focaccia bread, as seen in the picture (next to prawn rigatoni), is not focaccia bread. It was more of a buttered toast. The texture of the balsamic, in the balsamic and olive oil it comes with, was pasty and sweet, I've never had a pasty balsamic.
I loved the staff, very attentive, always made sure your water was full, but menu was pretty limited and food was honestly a little overpriced. You're paying NZD $23 for a pie of pizza that is NOT shareable (not quite a personal but you cannot share it) yet, a business around the corner had pizzas for NZD $ 10.
Nice Italian restaurant with outdoor seating. The menu is limited, especially at lunch time, though everything is executed well. We enjoyed the focaccia bread starter which came toasted with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, lamb papardelle, and margherita pizza which had more cheese than we expected but tasted right. They also have kid size items if coming with a group.
Good service and excellent food. We ordered their seafood linguine, cloudy clam pot and the special pizza. They offered a lunch hour on their pizza at $15 each which is really great value. Food all tasted really nice and the only small criticism i have of the meal was that they didn't use fresh pasta for the linguine. Else would have been perfect!
Excellent service with delicious food. We were treated to a move inside when it got quite cool outside👌👌
Great hosts.
The pasta and pizza that we ordered were on point and there really isn't anything we can say other than really good Italian food done very well. If it helps, I still missed the tomato based pasta after 4 days driving out from Wanaka to Queenstown.
The Italian wine was great the food was amazing and the dessert was delicious.
HOWEVER! The service was dismal...
It took about 30min to get the first course after it was done it took another 40min for the main course to be served and even the dessert took roughly 20min to be served.
Even the fricking tap beer was taking so long we started to ‘order in advance’: we had our glasses full and we would order another.
Worst of all? They would take our drink orders and not bring it. The last drop (pun intended) was when we ordered drinks for the whole lot and didn’t get it after about 15min we asked and were told the bar was closed. Excuse me? You don’t take orders if the bar is closed!
We expend over a thousand dollars in there and despite the food being great we left with a very bad taste in our mouths... if they have takeaway I’d recommend you’d buy and take it home (probably order an hour prior maybe?) but definitely avoid eating there...
(Yeah my pictures are horrible but believe me the food was so good it’s the only thing holding me back into leaving a worse review)
Absolutely amazing food! We came here tonight for dinner. We had the polenta chips and truffle aioli for entree. Then for dinner we had the gnocchi & beef cheeks (too delicious to get a photo) and the lamb ragu for dinner. The gnocchi & beef cheeks was our favourite by far! Staff were super friendly and helpful. Next time we are in Wanaka we will be back 😍🙌🏽
Beautifully crafted Italian food. The rigatoni and gnocchi were absolutely delicious. Caparcio very tasty as a starter. Would highly recommend for a nice dinner.
The restaurant served various of foods and drinks , we ordered salad, 2 spaghetti, 1 pizza and desserts, that's really enough for 4 adults. Foods are quite delicious, definitely will visit again.
Good tasting food, the gnocchi was great.
But sadly the portion size was for a child,
So we all felt very ripped off because I wouldn’t say it’s a fine dinning restaurant.
Great meal! Wonderful service! Our waitress Victoria was incredible! The food was unique and tasty. A couple of stand out items were the polenta fries and the homemade gnocchi. Do yourself a favor and eat here. Absolutely recommended!
So many great things to be said about this restaurant! The food was absolutely fantastic! I had the gnocchi and my parents had the spaghetti and they were exactly as the restaurant claims, recipes straight from Italy! The wines also complimented the food and the overall experience was great! It was a very cold night in wanaka, but this place is cozy and I cannot wait to eat here again!
Walked in for lunch and had a lovely meal. Beef cheek gnocchi was particularly brilliant but pizza didn’t disappoint either. Thumbs up.
Ordered beef carpacio, kale salad, prawn pasta, rissoto, and lamb pasta
Other than lamb pasta, the rest taste great! Lamb pasta just too overrated for me.
Another fine meal in Wanaka. You typically need a reservation here so we made one the day before. We had 4 courses including squid and white beans, bruschetta, and polenta fries as starters. All were delicious and nice size portions - you could split one between two people. The house salads are large and delicious - the pickled onions are a nice touch. For our mains we had veggie gnocchi (they were light pillows that melt in your mouth), lamb papardelle (great flavor and perfectly cooked) and a white pizza. It was more food than we should have ordered and we finished all of it...after a good day of hiking. The cannoli for dessert was yummy with cream filling classically made from marscapone. Service was good. One woman was spectacular serving as hostess, bartender and food expediter. The meal timing was also well executed.
House made potato gnocchi is the best!! Had it for several times and never disappoint.... However my friend used to love gnocchi with creamy pesto sauce, it’s been taken off from new menu. Instead of pesto sauce, they use gorganzola. We’re not the fan of blue cheese though!! Braised beef cheek is very tender, but the sauce is not my favorite.... Chilli baby optus with casareccia is amazing!! Cooked perfectly casareccia and chilli gives it a good kick!! Love it...
Francesca's was a tiny bit hard to find - you have to round the corner near a small stream off the main street. Reservation recommended as it's incredibly popular place for good reason. Their potato skin and aioli entree was one of the best things I've tried in Otago. Their pizzas were a bit slow to come out due to the wood fire oven only being able to accept 2 in one go but they were worth the wait. Wasn't able to finish my portion for the large sizing! Their polenta chips also arent to be missed.
Amazing potato Gnocchi! It kind of melts in your mouth after biting into it. Really flavourful and not too heavy. Will definitely come here again. Booking essential during busy times like Friday nights and weekends. It's pretty convenient using their website to do it.
Delicious food a great atmosphere and fantastic service. The chilli oil is a must have and the pizzas are wood fired.
Handmade dough and wood fired pizza. Great pasta menu too. Enjoyed delicious meal.
A very nice Italian restaurant where I wouldn't have expected one to be. Everyone else enjoyed their food and the selection as well as all appetizer plate is wonderful. I'm personally not a fan of venison so the pepperoni pizza made of that wasn't good for me but otherwise a very nice atmosphere
Great experience here - superb food and friendly service. Good lunchtime offers. Will come again!
Great shaded outdoor space. Perfect on a hot sunny day and pizza's and wine were pretty good too
Food was delicious, but the portion size wouldn't be enough for a baby - by considering the very high prices!
Absolutely incredible food, everything was out in good time for our extra large group. I don't think anyone had a bad thing to say about their meals. The Espresso Martini was the best I'd ever had and the complimentary Disaronno liqueur presented after our meal was a beautiful touch. The staff were really lovely and attentive, making the whole experience just wonderful. Can't wait to go back!
Pricey yes. But so worth it for your taste buds. We even got the house wine and that was such a great choice. You can definitely not go wrong here for a dinner night out.
Loved their gnocchi! Not just a boring dish with tomato sauce but a real creation! Highly recommended, don't forget to book in advance, they're always full!
Great place with good food. Staff are friendly and service is quick. Highly recommend the pepporini wood fire pizza with goat's cheese.
The food here is absolutely amazing!! And the customer service is brilliant!!! Not to mention the italian beers! Favoloso!!!
Ideal deserts and really tasty mains. Only gnocchi was a bit overfried.
Lovely lunch today !!! Stunning Wanaka weather, would recommend eating outside, perfect outlook towards little river, devine salads & coffee ... excellent service and friendly staff, would recommend.
Great meals here. We had a big group and service was a little slow, but everyone agreed the food was excellent. I also love an Italian place with Peroni on tap.
It's a little spenny for young adults but WORTH IT. Order the beef gnocchi and enjoy the best meal of your life. This should be at the top of your list if you are visiting Queenstown/Wanaka!
Great authentic Italian pizza! Their polenta chips are great too!
Great salad and pizza! Would recommend reserve the seats ahead as it’s always fully booked.
Excellent food and service. Highly recommended.
Service and food was very very good. Nice to have authentic Italian food on holiday in New Zealand.
Ended up getting the carbonara which in hindsight, I really shouldn't have ordered. It wasn't particularly creamy and some of the meat pieces were definitely over cooked, but still, gorgeous food.
Staff here were super friendly and our waiter was really nice.
Classic tourist trap prices but where isn't in Wanaka.
have venison pepperoni pizza and lamb sboulder pasta after one day hike. very nice food and service
Superb early evening meal Beef gnocchi for me and lamb pappardelle for my wife Couldn't fault it, hot and deliciously tasty
Gnocchi is absolutely delicious, can't go past it 👀
Service was great, we were seated and served quickly and food was at our table within 15 minutes (at 5.30). The gnocchi was super soft and tasty and the margarita pizza was equally as good. Great food overall! Only suggest they have more signage to find it as it's behind the ale house and not seen from the street
Yummy! Polenta fries and kale salad were awesome. The pizza margarita was good, too.
EDIT: we gave it another go, and the gnocchi granted a different dish was excellent!
Francescas has always been a staple for me! Service always impeccable and food amazing. Gnocchi tasted okay. The carbonara was so salty you couldn’t eat it. Polenta fries what I remember as being slightly crunchy and fluffy on inside were stale and not tasty. For the price it was disappointing.
The polenta fries were heavenly, and so was the house wine, kale salad and the pizza. Delicious!
Nice restaurant. Staff was kind food was alright. I tried gnocchi with beef. It was good but ....😅😅 bit expensive!
10/10 best Italian I've had 😁, highly recommend.
Excellent food and service. We always dine here whenever we are in Wanaka.
We had the best experience at Francesca’s - the service was prompt and friendly and the food was soooo good. We had the gnocchi with braised beef cheeks and the vegetarian ragiatoli with chilli olives and sundried tomato. It was emotional. Perfectly paired with a local Wanaka Pinot Noir. We both rated it as the best meal we’d had in a long time. Dessert was just as good. High praise for the awesome team at Francesa’s Italian Kitchen !
Great service from the moment we walked in. The food is great , very tasty.
Great Italian food (Pasta/Pizza) they specialise in thin crust authentic pizza cooked in a wood fired oven. But they also do pasta dishes antipasto and desert! Have eaten here several times over the last 5 years and was always impressed with the service. Get in early during the winter as there can be a queue.
Very nice Italian restaurant, great pizza!
Great foods.. nicely decorated.. good service.. pretty waitress..
One of Wanaka's true delights.
They have a great selection of meal options to suit many tastes, though we decided to have a pizza day and what a great decision that was. A classic margherita is one of my favourite ways to test a place's pizza, as it gives a clear view of their core components. It was definitely a fantastic pizza, and we opted for a gluten free base/crust as well. By far the best GF pizza crust I've ever had, it was light and almost fluffy with a great crispness to the edges. The tomato sauce was flavourful but not intense, with herbs throughout, and very fine pieces of tomato scattered throughout, adding to the depth of it. It also wasn't very acidic like many others (and most store bought ones), so I didn't end up with that acidic tomato 'burn' in my mouth that I usually get. The mozzarella wasn't bland at all, though too the flavour was soft, providing a good transition between the tomato and basil. The only thing I would wish for is a little more of the basil.
We also had the Primavera, which was also excellent. I'm not usually a fan of asparagus, but it was executed brilliantly in that dish, providing texture while being soft enough so that you don't have to fight for just a bite of it. The balance of the goat's cheese and marinated artichoke was wonderful, each distinguishable but intertwined. The touch of pesto genovese finished it off nicely. Our final item was the polenta fries, which were top notch. The only disappointing thing was how few there were, though assuming you were having them along with a main dish (like the pizza), it's probably the right amount.
Authentic Italian tasty food, clean, crisp neat ambiance, good service. Kids menu is a plus. Outdoor seating by giant trees is amazing. Tucked in the backside of the main shops, so it was hard to locate. Not a pocket friendly option, but best for that fancy lunch / dinner with your loved ones.
Was recommended on our walk in Mount cook.
It was fantastic food and staff were just lovely
I've been here a few times now. The service is fantastic and fast! The staff were very polite and helpful without being intrusive. The pizzas we ordered came out really fast and we're cooked to perfection. Delicious. A shame they no longer do takeaway from the food truck though! But luckily you can still pack up your remaining pizza that you don't finish. Recommended!
Nice little place - had a cosy visit on a rainy evening. Staff were helpful and menu was a sensible length. Had some very good gnocchi but pasta options were a little limited. Pizza was very tasty, if a little too much cheese. Side salad was delicious. Overall, very happy
Superb food and customer service. Enjoyed myself! Kid friendly too. Service staff ensured we had all we needed to take care of our baby. Ordered the prawn linguine and pepperoni pizza. Super YUMS👌
Authentic pizza and great service. Remember to make a reservation.
Great service and friendly staff. Gnocci with beef cheeks was the best gnocchi I have ever had. Great atmosphere. Beers on tap. Nice wine selection.
Make a booking if coming in winter months. Saw lots of people getting turned away!!
Also pizza base is great, I just wish they were a little more simple on the toppings but maybe that's just me lol!
Great service, cozy place, and the pizza was just perfect, loved!
Food was ok, service was slow, wine was ok.
Fantastic atmosphere great pizzas and Italian cuisine. Excellent helpful staff and very clean toilets. We will be back.
Food was good, service was a bit slow. Took a while to take our order and the pizzas took a very long time to make. But they are made in a brick oven so they were very good. The venison pepperoni was perfect with the Smokey taste.
Good location and selection of menu. Pasta was a bit bland and pizza is tough on the edges.
Beautiful prepared and sourced food. This was one of the best food experiences in NZ. We didn’t have a bad meal here. Recommended meals were the gnocchi and beef cheek, risotto and potato skins. The beetroot pasta was one of the best pasta dishes we have eaten. It was a shame it was an entree, this amazing dish would work as a main. We were talking about it for days. Only disappointing thing was the ‘ultimate gin’ cocktail. Nothing ultimate about it. Highly recommended place to eat in Wanaka. Owner and chef doing food right. Beetroot pasta give it a try, was amazing. Thank you chef..get there
Great food, staff and atmosphere. Catered for a vegan meal and it was pretty good. Pricy but worth it.
I loved this place! It looks nice, the staff is very friendly and the food is amazing! We started with a shared tasting platter with great hams, cheeses, chutneys (the fig chutney was heaven!) and olives. We followed that up with gnocchi with broccoli and gorgonzola and mushroom and truffle risotto. Both dishes were delicious!! I also like the fact that you can see the kitchen and the pizza guy with the big oven. Highly recommendable!
We made a booking the night before, this was a good move as they had no space all evening for anyone walking in off the street. After a long day's hiking we went big and ordered the parma pizza, pasta and kale salad shared between the two of us. This was a delicious combo. The food was amazing and so was the service. Its worth booking a night out 2 before visiting you won't be disappointed.
We stopped by for lunch and ordered pizzas - they were all right.
The lady who showed us to our table was warm and friendly. But the lady who took our orders and refilled our water was less so. So, I guess it's a hit and miss, which seems to be the case when I was reading through other reviewers comment on this place.
It might be a little difficult to find this place, but you just need to turn round the corner and walk on for about 20 or 30 more steps and you should see it.
Overall though, I probably wouldn't really recommend it as a lunch option as you should have plenty other places to choose from which are more budget friendly.
Good food, very tasty. Good service, friendly staff. Being an Italian restaurant there was lots of olives in all the dishes, my husband and I don't like olives. I did have a lovely Irish coffee at the end. Would recommend this test restaurant.
All the foods we ordered are great.
Came here as a group and had a great night. The pizzas from the wood fired oven were good. There's a good selection of great desserts which aren't too large.
Staff were friendly, attentive and had a good knowledge of the menu.
The beef cheek gnocchi is so good that it probably wrecked gnocchi for me from other places. The potato skins are nice all the people I dined with loved their food too.
Delicious Antipasti like a main course. We ate here as part of a small tour group and loved it. The antipasti boards were filled with cold meats, cheeses and lovely bread. The polenta fries were outstanding. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the ragu was good but the antipasti was the best. Charming serving staff too.
Consistently good. The sauces on the pastas are mmmm, polenta fries, potato skins are delicious. Leave space for the tiramisu
Always a favourite; authentic italian cuisine, great service and good value. The wood fired pizzas are delicious.
We stopped here on the drive from Franz Joseph to Queenstown. Even though it was almost closing time, the staff here was very helpful. They gave us time to decide and order our food. The pizzas was excellent. The flavor and taste was awesome.
Some incredible dishes but others fall flat. Great atmosphere though overheated (ONG!), and good service.
Beautiful & truely authentic Italian cuisine. With vegan options to choose from, you are able to craft your own pizza or indulge in an egg free pasta. You will not be disappointed if you come here.
Had dinner here on a busy nice in Wanaka. I had the baked salmon which was cooked perfectly and very delicious. Service was good, atmosphere was cozy. While this might not be the nicest restaurant in town, it is well priced and a great option for a good meal that is a little more on the affordable side
Restaurant managed to squeeze us in before the dinner rush which was excellent as they where fully booked, food was amazing and the cocktails where on par. The service from the staff was excellent aswell, highly recommend if in the area for dinner. Thanks Francesca's kitchen
Everything we tried (beef check Gnocchi, clams, Chocolate Bonbini and some cocktails) were absolutely perfect, right bang on the nail.
Cheers team.
Hidden gem! Very good food, they use fresh ingredients. My girlfriend really enjoyed the carpaccio and cannelloni. I loved their bruchetta and pizza with parma ham. Friendly staff. Would definitely go back here!
Staff were amazing & food was awesome...can recommend seafood linguini🍝pizza🍕gnocchi🥘lamb dish🍛& cocktails🍹😋😘
Friendly staff but couldn't dine in due to limited options of mains. However, the pizza looks delicious. It gets prepared from the dough. Definitely would come back to try.
It was going so well they got me and my son and nephew a table, drinks arivedv, pizzas arrived. I sat in front of the pizza oven and watched our pizzas cooked. Before we had finished I looked up and saw the chef opening a Pam's mozzarella from the supermarket. Guys if your trying to be professional please make sure these things are not viable. Otherwise it was great
Selfmade italian very good food.
What an amazing place a must to stop in when you are visiting Christchurch.
We started with the clams then we had the prawn and lamb shoulder pasta it was all pure perfection best I have ever had!!!
Wonderful service and will definitely make a special trip to come back one day!
This is owned by the same owners as Kika so you can expect a similar high level of quality and service but in a more family oriented space. Would recommend reserving, we didn’t and had to wait almost an hour and saw other diners turned away once we were seated. We had the daily bruschetta which was an awesome mascarpone and goat whip with pickled beet root and the kale salad to start - both excellent. The beef cheek gnocchi was super rich which is what we wanted and thankfully our server recommended the prawn rigatoni which was other-worldly. They make it with a prawn bisque and tomato so you get all that prawny goodness throughout + proper el dente pasta. Highly recommend if you’re in Wanaka and feeling like some Italian.
Amazing staff service, and food was excellent
Very attentive, friendly and helpful staff. The food is like a taste explosion going off on your mouth and I loved my mock tail. Good atmosphere with an interesting wallpaper feature, although you might have to go looking for it.
Great athenteic pasta and gnocchi. Possibly the best place in Wanaka
When it came to celebrating my husband's birthday on our honeymoon, we chose this place...
It was a sad mistake... the place is fine, the food is alright. But the robotic turnover and strict (reinforced) times put a huge dampener on was should have been a festive night.
We did not enjoy our meals and left to find dessert elsewhere.
Expected far more based on previous reviews. Pizzas are ok but appear to be made (surprisingly) not with buffalo mozzarella but a local NZ cow variety also called mozzarella but tasteless.
Manager also seemed very dismissive regarding the thick layer of sediment in the flat bottomed wine glass & another customer's comment about a pizza. An off day maybe, but won't be going back.
Absolutely delicious! The gnocchi in particular was the best I’ve ever had! Great service too. Highly recommended!
Loved it! Tucked away from the Wanaka main drag. Pretty patio and interior that wasn't too loud. They offer a house wine on the menu. It wasn't available, so they offered another at the same price. We had polenta chips (fries) and clams. Then eggplant parmesan and rigatoni with pork and fennel. All delish and we had leftovers for lunch the next day. We didn't have pizza, but it looked amazing.
Absolutely amazing beef carpaccio, the capers and anchovies in it were perfect.
The gnocchi with braised beef cheeks was very good, just needed a splash of something acidic to cut down the richness and stickiness of the sauce, but very good anyways.
Parmesan and truffle potato skins superb.
The bruschetta of the day I felt it needed a but more work, cold dollops of ricotta on broccoli with balsamic reduction, not bad but seemed like something put together quickly.
The sevice was prompt and friendly, very attentive.
Overall a very nice experience, would definitely come back and try more things on the menu.
Loved loved the vibe of this restaurant - make sure you book as it’s hard to get a table. Having said that, the food didn’t blow us away. The Ragú was delicious, but the prawn pasta lacked flavour (and was a little cold). I would give it another try though given the vibe
Wow what delightful, quick, friendly service! Busy restaurant, cool decor and central location. The beef gnocchi was a little mushy but the delicious beef cheeks fell apart and the sauce was very good. It paired very well with the sangiovese merlot (def order this wine). Venison pizza and artichoke pizzas were very good with the addition of the chilli oil they provided. The lamb tagliatelle was flavourful and had a good amount of meat and olives. We enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. We would definitely return and recommend others to come for a meal.
Choice of dishes was wide and interesting. Excellent food and wine list was supportive of local wineries. Very attentive and friendly table staff. Highly recommend it.
Really great food, top service. A great overall experience! A hidden gem worth finding!
Would just like to say massive thank you to the staff at Francescas. What a fantastic experience. Havent had italian food that great since Melbourne. recommend to all
A favourite of mine but this was first time back in a long while. A must try is the gnocchi with beef cheek. Super rich and very delish. Nicely paired with the house red (which admittedly lacked a bit of body but was all that funds allowed!). Affogato and a saunter on the lake front was all that was needed to finish off a rather authentic Italian.
Place was a little bit hard to find as was off the main street and tucked behind the pub however well worth the find. Really nice setting and good atmosphere with pizza oven on view. Staff really friendly and helpful. Food was really authentic Italian, very tasty and warming meal for the middle of winter. Highly recommended.
How said I hated this place. I didn't. It had some problems in room 201. The show didn't work and you could only get water running into the bath. The TV wouldn't move from were it came on.
The bed was very comfortable.
Surveys for food was good.
Excellent gnocchi and salmon, good pizza. Service was good. I tried to book by calling but they wouldnt pick up. Rocked up and they weren't too busy at dinner time.
Wow. Differs from a genuine home-cooked Italian meal in only one important respect: it's better. Much better. Friendly, attentive staff, prompt, helpful service and outstanding cuisine with intelligently matched NZ and Italian wines. Bellissimo! Beef cheek gnocchi and lamb pappardelle honestly could not have been improved by any human agency possible. Perfect 10, drop the mike, done. Do yourself a favour and visit; just about worth the plane fare from Oz and the drive down just for this.
Good but not as great as we'd hoped. Pizza could have used a bit longer in the beautiful wood burning oven that could have given it a lovely char, and the flavor was just okay. Asparagus starter was nice.
Very good food ! Better book early....
Great food, location and the waiters are super sweet. We got the best NZ Pizza there and even after a day in the car it tasted amazing up on the west coast.
Fantastic pizza and pasta, with very flexible gluten-free options for my celiac wife. The staff were unnecessarily generous at fixing a small mistake in our order as well. Highly recommended, one of the best meals we had in NZ
Nice but meal a little small
Delicious Italian cuisine. Personally I don't quite like cauliflower. But the cauliflower rissoto is pretty good. What a pity they don't have mushroom rissoto on the day we visited. Pizza is from traditional oven heated by timber. Awesome!
Great place for a Pizza.
The Pizzas are great as well.
Just what I wanted. Wood fired pizza as good as home! The smell of the wood fired oven is lovely. We had a venison pepperoni pie and it was perfect. Thin crust with a little char from the oven. Nice ambience for lunch, relaxed and low key music.
The food is good (I had the linguine), but the portion will have you looking for another place to eat shortly after.
Love this place! Had a yummy mushroom pizza. Staff is all so friendly and genuinely interested. 10/10 will come back again.
Located just behind Speight's at the Town Circle, Francesca is a busy place. Reservations during rush hours are advised.
The service was fine, while the food was better. We ordered some Salad and Vegetarian Agnolotti Pasta, which was really good.
Overall, it's a pricey restaurant, but worth going for the excellent Italian cuisine.
Food was good. Should have booked as we got there at 5:15 and they said they didn't have inside tables till 8:30.
Contrary to what some other reviewers have said, we found that the mains were quite small, barely filling.
They ran out of propane for the outside heaters about 5m after we sat down.
Foods are awesome and rich of flavours. Restaurant ambiance is nice and cosy, EXCEPT the customer service level was poor. The waitress was rude stoping me asking a question. Table arrangement was quite bad as well as we have to squeeze even though the restaurant was empty that time.
I will give 5 stars if the staff was not rude.
Best Gnocchi ever. Was absolutely delicious. Dessert wasn't great but the bruscheta and the gnocchi were amazing.
Excellent itallian, had the pepperoni pizza very delicious. The waitress was very lovely and helped cater for someone in our group that was vegan. Pricey but on point.
Polenta fries are a must! Their pizza and pasta are great as well, but I am obsessed with their polenta fries dipped in truffle aioli!
We stopped in for lunch today and got lucky that an outside table was open. Everything inside was booked already. It is always a good sign when lunch is completely booked. Should also mention that it is tucked away at the back of the shops. The address is on Ardmore Street, but you won't see it just walking down the street. You have to follow the sidewalk along the stream to the back of the building.
Ordered the Saffron and Asparagus Risotto topped with cherry tomatoes and it was delish. My husband had the Baked Mushroom and Ricotta Stuffed Pasta and my son had the Casareccia Carbonara - both of which were quite good too. The portions are not large, so the price point is a bit high, but that's to be expected in a resort town. I don't mind paying a lot for food when it is this good. Highly recommend.
Had a good dinner here. Good food for the price. Had garlic bread and beef carpaccio to start. Bucatoni and pappardelle for mains. Cannoli for dessert. Service was friendly, ambiance was nice, and the pizza oven filled the whole place with a lovely aroma.
The young lady serving us did a fantastic job. Be nice if there was name badge. The food was excellent
Great food and ambience. The pizza base is thin and flavoursome with just the right amount of cheese. Pasta is fresh homemade, perfect texture. Highly recommended and will definitely come back again
Came here for our wedding dinner with 6 of us. Food was amazing and the price was great. 5 starters, 5 mains, 3 desserts and 7~ drinks for 380$. Would definitely come again!
Wow epic food. Amazing pasta top service with the romantic dinner for 2 in their private green house booth. Definitely a must do.
Had a delicious dinner here - the homemade gnocchi is my recommendation! everything on the menu looked and sounded delicious. friendly attentive staff, quick service. definitely recommend
Delightful.
Service was excellent, friendly and efficient.
The limoncello martini was exquisite. Just the right amount of sourness and sweetness.
Starter: Polenta fries with truffle aioli. Perfect crunch on the outside with a smooth interior. Mmm.
Entree: The beef carpaccio was sublime. Razor thin slices served with white anchovies and lemon aioli.
Cloudy bay clams in a chilli and garlic broth and a side of buttery black garlic topped sourdough.
Main: Gnocchi with braised beefcheecks, melt in the mouth garlicky goodness.
Pork and fennel ragu, so moreish.
They are heavily booked so plan well in advance if you wish to have dinner here.
Walked in without booking and got served very quickly. Beautiful tasty pasta and pizza. Highly recommend the gnocchi and chocolate mousse as dessert.
Food as always good. Waiting 35 minutes for drinks is not, especially when you can see them on the bar for 10minutes while the ice melts. Pretty disappointing that the service didnt match the food.
Make sure to get a reservation early! I've tried to eat here twice with no luck (and they're kind of snobby about it) but I'm sure the food is excellent if you can ever manage to get a table. The second time I tried to eat here, they had at least a half dozen empty tables and it was 90 minutes before closing and they told us they were all booked up ... mmhmm
Superb meal. Limited menu for lunch bit still a good selection. Staff attentive and knew the menu well. Very extension wine and drinks list. Value for money.
Food was good, but our waiter wasn't the friendliest... Was actually rather rude and uncaring. Also a few menu items weren't available at the very beginning of dinner service (6:00pm) which is pretty odd.
Nice Italian, something a bit different. Not fussed with the pizzas.
Great food nice service
Tried the beef gnocchi and the lamb tortellini as recommended by staff. It was decent and I enjoyed the meal.
Very good gnocchi. Had a great dinner experience. There were issues with their booking system but we were lucky with our reservation.
I came here expecting a delicious meal. I did NOT come here expecting to see God. The Beef Cheek Gnocci changed my life and I will never view the world quite the same way again. Italian has been ruined for me, for I have seen the light and the rest of the world remains in darkness.
Exquisite pizza, beef cheek gnocchi was epic, excellent service, highly recommend.
The Pork Ragu was pretty tasty although I felt the sauce was a little thin. The focaccia was great as a side to the Ragu.
Outdoor seating are is shaded and very pleasant in the hot evening
Fantastic meal. One of the best Italian meals I have ever had! Great atmosphere and brilliant staff. A must do night out for dinner in Wanaka
Had lunch on a weekday and it was relatively quiet. I guess it’s because they are tucked in a corner which it’s not very visible to the crowd. The food’s really good! Especially the clams! Highly recommended to try the clams!
Amazing food! ! Amazing service (Jaco!).. .can't go wrong!!
Definitely make reservations...but don't shy away if you have to sit outside!!
So worth it!!
Christmas Dinner was amazing. The food, drink and staff made this a wonderful day for me. Thank you so much to everyone involved and Happy New Year to all.
Great food, everything is cooked well. Good fast service. Nice atmosphere. With the visit. Book early though was they book out in peak season
Tried risotto, very good. Gnocchi are both nice. Lamb and pizza are both good. Pretty much u can't go wrong with any of the food.
Tasty pizzas, don't get a view of the lake but that means you get a nice outside table. Service was really good considering all waiters are backpackers in the area.
I’m not normally a pasta person, but the prawn rigatoni is the best pasta dish I have ever tasted. Great service too. Highly recommended.
Recommended by others we gave it a try. Good job we booked as they turned away numerous on spec customers. Lovely food, excellent service.
Booking is essential. Best restaurant in Wanaka. All freshly made pasta like momma makes. Restaurant is at back corner of building so parking for easy access off Dunmore Street.
Had a really good meal at Francesca. Good spot when in town. Good service and the garlic bread straight out of the wood oven is amazing!
Great ambience, and nice location in Wanaka. We would take friends here to showcase one of the good restaurants in the town. Only downside is that it can get quite busy there can be a wait for food and tables sometimes
Lovely place where we ate delicious Italian food. Good wine, WiFi and service. If I lived near this place, I would probably go there all the time.
Delicious Italian food with generous portions. The wine I had was ok, could have been better. Service was great.
First time in Wanaka and at this restaurant. Fantastic gnocchi and carbonara. Loved the polenta fries too. Make sure you make a booking!
Authentic Italian. Delicious meals. A bit pricey and you need to book ahead.
Always a good meal here. Love the decor
Staff are very good
Must try the risotto, we went back to Wanaka because of the risotto. Pizza was good too. Lovely restaurant, thought the place is a bit hidden. Hidden gem :)
Unsure if they were just having an "off" night because we'd heard great things about the food. Unfortunately we were disappointed with most of our meals however, the service was great and the venue is cosy and inviting.
Had a woodfired pizza, fast service, not overly friendly, and very stingy on the toppings. The chargrilled capsicum was hard to find, in homeopathic quantities.
This is an okay Italian spot with very friendly staff. I would give it 3.75 stars if possible. Our dishes were served quickly but lacked some flavor.
Always fantastic food & service we Sat outside in the awesome wee hot houses. Best ever Gnocchi
Fabulous food and great service. But I was cold. We had to wear our coats inside. Little ambience either to match the quality of the Italian food.
Some of the best Gnocchi and Lamb shoulder I've ever had. Fantastic friendly service, fairly priced, in a warm modern setting.
Food was alright, nice outdoor setting.
Salmon salad is delicious, the atmosphere and staff are pretty nice.
Excellent pizza and tasty pasta, though lacking a little balance to some dishes. Would definitely recommend for the pizza alone and good carafes of house wine.
The best gnocchi I've eaten. Good options for vegetarians. Make a booking as we couldn't get in on attempt number one.
Friendly staff. Excellent meal choices. Competitive pricing. Quality meal. Able to take groups. Would visit again.
This was such a nice way to finish the Wanaka Challenge. Amazing food and Chianti by the carafe all finished off by a delicious Affogato. Can't wait to visit again soon.
Never disappointments and food always 5 out of 5. Only let down is that I never have room for dessert and the tiramisu looks divine and I suffer major FOMO 😫
Great authentic Italian experience.
Great pizza. Excellent wine. Service was a little slow but we thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Must go place if you are in Te Anau. The gluten free pizza was impressive! We went there twice in our stay at the town, and would go again if I am in the city!
Good food, decent drinks selection and friendly staff. We didn’t book but they still managed to squeeze us in during what was clearly a busy night.
Delicious pizza. SUPER FAST service, walked in, order 3 pizzas, 8 min later it was ready!!!
Thanks
So yummy! The kale salad is my favourite but everything is great! Save room for the the tiramisu!
Delicious Italian food with a great atmosphere. The best polenta fries ever
Limited menu outside pizza. Service a bit rushed despite us advising no hurry.
Food was delicious. However entrees and mains all came out at the same time. Staff need to be trained better.
The woodfired pizzas were delicious and well-priced. Perfect size and base thickness with generous toppings.
Very lively and consequently also very noisy as its a large space. However, good service and food.
Probably the best Italian in the Otago region. The prawn papparadelle was amazing and the gnocchi was soft and perfectly cooked
Friendly staff, yummy food, great ambiance. Reservations are almost a must although my son and I just were lucky walking in..
Must book at any time of year. Excellent food, wine, environs, and service.
Good food, but you'll need an appetizer, main dished are small but tasty. And reservation helps.
Peroni on tap with anchovies pizza for 25 $ , yum deal!
The wife and I had a great meal here. The service was great and the food was top shelf. I would recommend booking.
Very good food. Must book as always busy.
I recently had the pleasure of having dinner here. The service was amazing and the food superb. I can thoroughly recommend this restaurant.
Yummy pizza and veg gnocchi. I would have rated higher if the server was more attentive.
Excellent service and food - gnocchi, ragu, pizzas and desserts. Everything we had surpassed expectations
Best pasta I've ever had in my life. Do yourself a favour and give this place a crack.
Menu a bit restricted. Service was of a good standard. Restaurant was rather draughty with the door open all the time.
Beautiful food and great service. Special mention to Kelly who was our waitress twice and did a terrific job!
Excellent menu of great tasting delights. The only downside is timed sittings due to their popularity.
Great food. Salad was the best we've had in NZ. Entrees were delicious.
Great staff, good food, great ambience.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere and really friendly service. We'll definitely be back.
Great Italian seafood, gnocchi and other dishes. Friendly service. Moderate prices.
Very nice meal. Extremely tasty vegetarian gnocchi.
Delicious food. Small portion sizes and not the best service we have had in town
Friendly staff, delicious food.
Around the restaurant are 30min car parking, I suggest you to park a bit further for longer parking time.
Great food across the range of food our group of friends enjoyed
Lovely Italian restaurant, cozy ambiance and interesting menu. Lovely selection of Sicilian wines.
First time at this Francesca's, will surely be back! Great food and fantastic staff!👍😋🤓
Excellent Italian food, especially the gnocchi! Make a reservation in advance, this place is popular
Great food - not cheap but you get what you pay for. Atmosphere is nice and service was good too.
Great atmosphere, tasty risotto and house wine, not forgetting about the homemade mascarpone!
Very popular and busy at times. Best to book ahead of you can.
Tasty quick lunch
Solid Italien fare. Well presented and tasty. Portion size on the small side. I like it best for lunch.
They have good pizza
Fantastic pizza! If you're looking for italian way pizza, you're home ♥
The best meal I have ever had. Top job guys
Had the Parma pizza. Really good!! Mate had the salami which he really enjoyed too!! Thoroughly recommend.
Delicious food and wine, friendly and warm welcome staff.
Worth to take little bit time to take a break.
Highly recommend. Lovely staff. They even have a separate vegan menu 👌
Very poor acoustics.
Food ok, but not more.
Yummy meals. Good customer service. Usually full - must book ahead. Quite pricey.
Good food and Friendly staff
Very cozy and super Italian food! Can be busy sometimes. Really recommend!
Nice place to have a girly lunch. Nice house wine and good sized plates to share or have as a meal :)
Great lunch specials
Pretty good. Love the carpaccio starter but could be more of a selection of pasta dishes.
Outstanding pizza. Best service I've had in Wanaka. Highly recommended.
Good service, gorgeous food
The bruschetta here was amazing. I also really enjoyed the salmon. The service was also top notch
Lovely place and delicious food

Very nice restaurant and amazing food! Kids menu is excellent as well!
Lovely food. Definitely get a mix of apps, pizza, and pasta to share.
Good food
Polenta fries and a pizza for a quick lunch. Really excellent. Popular at peak times.
Delicious! They have vegan menu, that includes pizza with vegan cheese, pasta and salads. 👌👌👌
Not a bad Italian restaurant. Pasta was OK, pizza was OK too.

As was the company.
Food was delicious, service was ok to average.
Great little place for home cooked Italian. Book early!
Cannot fault the food, service and atmosphere of this place. By far the best place to eat in the South Island.
Lunch menu was a bit lacking in choices. What we had was nice
Good quality, authentic Italian food, not too expensive in Wanaka standard.
Cozy with great ambience. Their pastas are all great and I can't recommend the tiramisu enough.
Easy and pleasant, with good food and wine
While visiting NZ I found most of the restaurant very mediocre,
This restaurant is definitely on its on league,
Totally recommend
Amazing food, delicious wine and great service!
Always great food - amazing pizzas, friendly service always with a smile.
Really nice place, the dishes are tasty and the people are very nice!
Good Italian food. The extra wow factor in the taste.

Music a bit loud, felt rushed to finish meal, barely finished entre and main arrived
Venison peperoni pizza, peroni after a 1/2day at TC nothing better
