Reviews of Hillside Kitchen
D.
Hillside is our go-to place for special occasions, and never disappoints. The dishes on offer always surprise and delight. Creative, fresh, unusual, tasty. Things like celery sorbet and radish leaf pesto might look dodgy on paper but I can assure you that they are amazing and unforgettably wonderful.

We came in for the early sitting, tried a tasting of their full menu. Great value and interesting, the dessert was particularly bold (spicy and sweet) which we really enjoyed. Only negatives was that the service (removing plates, time between courses) was a little slow considering there was only 2 tables in and it felt a little squashed, but this is their pop up place. We will definitely go back and try the full menu probably at their main restaurant though.

Vegan tasting menu (7 courses) with wine matches. The menu is seasonal, this was August 2020. This feast will go down in history for me as one of the best I’ve ever had. The attention to detail is nothing short of exquisite. The flavours straight up punch you in the mouth in the best way. Special mention to the Alliums broth, oh my I want to eat that every day for the rest of my life. Can’t write this review without a special mention to the team at Hillside too, the chef greeted my friend with such genuine friendliness I thought they were old friends. Our waiter knew the menu and wines inside out and his energy and humour made our experience what it was. Can’t recommend Hillside enough. Twelve out of ten, will most definitely dine again.

Got the 5-course dinner - wow! Amazing value and everything was top quality. Each dish was well thought out and you could tell the care and attention given to them. Menu changes regularly, and I'm looking forward to getting back!
Space was nice, well lit and not too noisy. Staff were friendly and relaxed, not uppy. I was there with some friends, but this could quite easily be a good romantic date place.
C.
We enjoyed the 7 course vegan degustation paired with alcohlic and non alcoholic drinks. It was amazing! The food the drinks and the staff were exceptional, such a fun experience. Thank you!

My daughter and I had an absolutely fabulous experience tonight at Hillside Kitchen & Cellar. We chose the vegan 7-course tasting/degustation menu, and it was ALL insanely great! The service from each and every staff member, including of course the chef, was wonderful. Everyone was knowledgeable, warm, enthusiastic, genuine, and super efficient. We especially appreciate the locavore and sustainability practices you guys work into every dish. And...it was all delicious, surprising, joyful.
Thank you all the wonderful experience. We will be singing your praises far and wide!

Oooof. What to say! I've been here twice in three years and each time it's nothing less than an exceptional experience. The food is astronomically good, even voted "amazing" by the meat eater in the family, and leaves you feeling completely satiated. The service is outstanding - all of the staff know all the little details, and the major ones, about the origin of the food and wine, and are professional and relatable at the same time. Highly recommend if you like quality food cooked by skilled and talented humans and served by skilled and talented humans, period. A real treat for the tastebuds! 15/10.
J.
Fantastic food, interesting flavour combinations which we had not experienced before but really enjoyed. Every course was simply sublime but the nectarine sorbet in particular was to die for! Wine matchings and non-alcoholic matchings worked perfectly too and wonderfully complemented each dish. Impeccable service by our friendly server Freddie, who was very knowledgeable about the food and wine, as if he grew up with it. Highly recommend!
C.
Lovely fine dining venue in Wellington, with plenty of vegan options. They have a great philosophy - local, no-waste, and the food is tasty and inventive. I did the WOAP degustation which was great, very filling, and also great value for a quality degustation menu. I would definitely like to come back here!
J.
Amazing plant based creations. Lots of love in the food and service. Will be back again, thanks Hillside Kitchen - please keep sharing your work with us

One of the best meals I've ever eaten. Fantastic attention to detail, with innovative combinations of flavours and top-quality ingredients, perfectly prepared. I've never had a meal this good outside of a Michelin star restaurant.

Have you ever asked yourself if vegetarian food can be delicious, fancy and sustainability sourced at the same time? Well, Hillside is bringing the high cuisine for the vegetarians and vegans of Wellington. The first thing you notice entering is the smell of freshly baked sourdough, so delicate, soft and crunchy at the same time. Then the thousands of pickle jars everywhere, with labels that seem to be taken from an Harry Potter book: pickled pear, elderflower cordial, pickled Sakura... The staff will welcome you to your table, and start explaining the menu of the day. Every day the menu will be different, because each ingredient is locally sourced and only available on certain days. But do not worry: even the weirdest ingredients like kamokamo or seaweed are blended together in a delicious embrace. Well done team Hillside, you're my new favourite restaurant.
M.
I love this place. Cute and quaint. Their sourdough bread and the sourdough crumpets and really good. I have only been there for brunch. Good coffee, eggs with creamy spinach and sourdough bread makes my Sunday.
s.
Great coffee, neat little shop. Awesome lunch menu, creative and tasty mains, deal with 2 courses and 3 courses available. Creativity also invested in their drink lists.
N.
What a culinary experience. Beautiful dishes, undiscovered flavours and great service. Highly recommended for a special night.
s.
I was in a seminar this morning where I listened how Asher Boote talked about his restaurant and his staff and I was really curious about it. I can say now that the place is cosy, nice, the staff is, 1 to 10? 11 in service. About the food: portions are quite small, I had the quinoa salad and was yummy. I’ll be back for sure.
J.
After a long day, in an unfamiliar city, I chanced upon Hillside. Keen for an ample portion of animal protein I couldnt hide that I was a little concerned when they said vegetarian. Too tired to look elsewhere, I thought oh well, let's see what they can do. Well, every so often we make choices, and then something special happens. That experience was one of the best on record, beautiful, fresh, crisp food, served in a quirky and subtle space by super friendly but not over the top staff. In an ode to doing the simple things well, they have THE best bread and butter you will ever have the pleasure of getting to know. Such a treat to dine here!
N.
Anyone can make something with fat taste good. It takes a truly talented chef to make humble vegetables shine the way they do at hillside. For that reason alone this has to be the best restaurant in Wellington bar none.
T.
What can I say.
My fiancé and I have just had the most phenomenal vegan dinner at Hillside. The food, the service, the ambience is perfection.
The food is thoughtful, delicious and filling.
The service is friendly, not over bearing and informative.
The ambience is brilliant, with only so many tables and a surprisingly quiet kitchen, it was a perfect spot for an anniversary dinner.
We had both the wine matching and the non-alcoholic matching, while both very different were incredible. Both paired superbly with the meals, there was nothing that clashed. I enjoyed the lesser-known wineries being show cased and how knowledgeable the staff were, and my fiancé was thoroughly impressed with the homemade non-alcoholic beverages, their creativity and flavour.
The low-waste attitude in the kitchen did not compromise on flavour. From the broth in the Allium dish to the crust of the Yam and Kawakawa tart, nothing was wasted.
We left with full bellies and the intention of returning again very soon.
Thank you all so much for making our 5 year anniversary one to remember. We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
P.
The experience, tallent and creativity of chef Max Gordy is sweating out of every dish coming out of Hillside tiny kitchen. This is by far the best experience I had in Wellington and I had diner at Whitebait and KCcafe in the past two days.
Make sure to ask for a tour of the garden and don’t be shy to ask for more bread because you don’t want to leave anything on the plate.
A.
Delicious, innovate dishes. We did the 7 course and were pleasantly stuffed by the end. Some super interesting techniques and flavor combinations (chamomile oat milk foam and carrot sorbet!!!) Service was great, atmosphere was cosy, and the value is unbelievable. This would have a Michelin star in San Francisco for sure. I love this place. Cute and quaint. Their sourdough bread and the sourdough crumpets and really good. I have only been there for brunch. Good coffee, eggs with creamy spinach and sourdough bread makes my Sunday.
J.
Phenomenal place. We shared a full 7 course tasting menu and a smaller menu between the two of us, so we tried everything they had to offer at the time. And let me say, it was phenomenal.
Their approach of using local ingredients and transforming them into interesting dishes with influences from all over the world, as well as not wasting anything and creating deliciousness even out of scraps is amazing, and their execution is nearly flawless. Most of the courses were exciting and very well balanced, with only maybe the main being somewhat more standard fare (still tasted nice).
And the atmosphere is really friendly. They take good care of their guests and won't make you feel out of place. Plus, the prices were quite reasonable.
So all in all, I highly recommend giving this place a try. If I lived in Wellington, I'd be a regular.
E.
Beautiful dishes - well thought through with a delicate balance of flavours.
Would highly recommend the wine pairings to make the experience extra special.
Attentive service - was great to learn about NZ wines and what went into each of our dishes.
They cater for various dietary requirements which we were very thankful for.
j.
We went to Hillside Kitchen for Father’s Day today. We had the 4-course lunch. All meals are beautifully executed. It’s amazing how they can make vegetarian and vegan foods very tasty! Very inventive and the courses are everything we haven’t tried before. Probably the best meal we ever had in Wellington!
K.
One of the best place that I have been to. Enough said come and try them
J.
Enjoyed our lunch today at Hillside kitchen. Great attention to detail and presentation. Quite experimental Which I really found refreshing with some really interest tastes. Some not quite to my palate but overall a great dining experience. Price was appropriate to the amount of detail in the preparation and presentation. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions by the chef of each dish. Would certainly go again. Overall atmosphere was relaxed and very pleasant. Will certainly go again.
C.
We just had our 4th dining experience here of the 5 course degustation with wine match. It was exceptional! The food was creative and outstanding. The service was - as always flawless. The best service we have had in all of NZ. ❤️
S.
Fantastic experience, atmosphere, and fiendishly inventive food. Combining contemporary NZ fare with some incredible foraged goodies. Really working to showcase some of the best that local food producers have to offer.
We highly recommend taking the longer 7-course set menu; you won't regret it.
J.
Having recently decided to try vegan for a month, we decided to pop into Hillside Kitchen for dinner. We had the 7 course tasting menu, and the kitchen was happy to provide vegan options for us.
There was one course that didn't work for us (a Walnut "cheese", but everything was executed with great care, and most of the dishes were fantastic.
We'll definitely be going back.
N.
Great experience all round. Intimate dining with superb service. Went for the vegan 7 course and really struggled to get through the last few courses. All was delicious though. Highly recommended.

Came along for Sunday brunch. In short it was awesome. Welcoming hosts, wholesome delicious food (and pleasantly different to your usual breakfast fare with pickled mushrooms and creamed spinach alongside classic options like omelette etc.). Highly recommend!
L.
We chose the Delicious 5 course (though we seemed to get a lot more) degustation menu without wine matching as it was a Wednesday night. We were very impressed with the care and attention put into every morsel of the tasty dishes. The courses were small and intriguing but we enjoyed having so many little exquisite gems to sample. The staff were excellent and attentive. It was a cosy informal setting and we left feeling very inspired by the inventive and thoughtful use of seasonal, local, fresh produce.
A.
I can't stress how delicious food. Great experience with a story enthusiastic staff
A.
What an amazing experience, I had the 5 course vegan menu, my friends ordered the 5 course Jon vegan menu. Everything was wonderful, the atmosphere, food and staff all made our meal a memorable experience. Thank you to the staff that served us and special thanks to the chef
V.
If you're trying to mark a special occasion in Wellington, I'd strongly reccomend dinner at Hillside Kitchen in Thorndon.
The food was insanely delicious, and the whole thing was so entertaining (mysterious crystal clear soups!) and all of their food is made completely from scratch- they even brew their own vinegar.
The staff are extremely nice and knowledgeable about the dishes, they were also extremely accommodating to the fact that our table had quite a few allergies.
I honestly wasn't convinced going in, because it is an awful lot of money for a single meal, but it was really, genuinely worth it. The whole thing lasted about 3 hours, and on top of the 7 courses, we also received 3 bonus mini courses (each with multiple elements) which were 3 kinds of snacks, a bread course (their gf bread is amazing) with home made butter and a plate of petit fours at the end.
Each dish was a complete work of art, and had so many perfectly made little elements, including chefs popping out of the kitchen to pick fresh herbs from their garden for dishes as they are made.
I cannot recommend this experience enough.
R.
Had an amazing dining experience at Hillside Kitchen tonight, each course was as delicious as the last and paired with perfect wines. Awesome staff and service, can't recommend highly enough 100% would visit again!
R.
Excellent service and a nice place in general. The food was ok but I was hoping for something more interesting. I'd still recommend it if you're vegan or vegetarian. Stay away from the non alcoholic drinks pairing. I don't think it worked for anyone at the table.
J.
Incredible array of colours textures and flavours combined in a delicious original and compelling way. The tasting menu was an inspirational delight and the staff well-informed and good_natured. We need many more eateries half as good as this. .
M.
The food here is a combination of imaginative art and sustenance that ignites conversation and challenges and provokes in a delightfully pleasing manner. Crafted and curated, nothing shouts here, yet the cooking and presentation proudly explores local ingredients with delicious twists. Absolutely delicious.
L.
This is the most amazing vegetarian place I've ever been to. They take such care and consideration with your order and personalise everything to make sure you have the most incredible experience. I live for the house made crumpets and the house made sodas.
K.
100% recommend this place.
My partner and I went out for a celebration meal, we got the degustation menu. EVERYTHING was delicious. Really innovative meals and combinations, each dish was something we hadn't had before. The timing between each course was well paced. Drinks were also great. Service was awesome.
It is a really special place to go. You must try.
R.
It was such a pleasure to have vegetarian food celebrated front and centre rather than supplied as an afterthought. The food was full of innovative and delicious flavour and texture, and the degustation menu meant it was interesting and varied. The service was warm and relaxed but well paced and respectful, as well as informative about the wine and dishes. They went above and beyond by providing us with sour dough and Kumara rewana starters for my baker-daughter to experiment with. Thanks so much HK&C for a wonderful dining experience.
M.
Amazing flavors, the non-alcoholic accompaniments were so good. The wine was fantastic too. Very enjoyable experience. Will definitely be back
J.
Deliciously tasty and amazingly presented dishes. Your produce is of high quality. Simply loved the food and the service by both the waiters. The final touch when we asked to take home some butter just put the icing on the cake. Thank you for a wonderful meal and evening... one to be highly recommended. JS
_.
just perfect. friendly service, clean premises, and amazing food. we felt really well looked after, and completely spoilt. thank you guys. best lunch in a long time, we will be back.
J.
We had a wonderful, polished fine dining experience here that was thoughtful and inclusive of our two year old. Both the wine and non alcoholic drink pairings perfectly complimented the food, which was spectacular. It was a meal we’ll remember.
r.
Fantastic food and great/attentive service. Was a great night out. Some of the meals are very inventive and unusual, but definitely worth trying! Potato and chocolate for dessert??? Carrot steak?? : p amazing wine matches too.
M.
Completely amazing food and service. Honestly, I think the best restaurant I have been to (nationally or internationally. Worth every penny!
S.
Loved the celery soda. Very limited menu choice for lunch. Three entrees and three mains to choose from. My companion's meals were underwhelming and not seasoned. The dumplings were gluey and the colour off putting. Portions were very small and after two courses we were still very hungry. Somehow Hillside did not meet my expectations of a vegetarian restaurant as I was expecting wholesome and well seasoned food showcasing seasonal produce.
K.
Probably the best meal I've ever had. I have never had this sort of experience eating vegetarian food and was blown away by the experience. I've lived in Wellington for years and had no idea this place existed. Do yourself a favor and check it out
T.
If I could give 6 stars I would! Nothing short of a sensational food experience... This is Kiwi Cuisine at it's very best and as a food reviewer in Sydney this venue would would rate as a 'Must Visit' on our website. The cleverly put together taste sensations and wines carefully selected for each dish makes this one of the top food experiences in Wellington.
L.
Nice ambience, great service and food concepts but in terms of fine dining, flavours didn't blow my mind. Too much reliance on salt for some dishes. Fairly small portions, even for fine dining, I had to eat some snacks when I got home...but I am a pretty hungry person!
A.
We love Hillside. Consistently great fresh, tasty food. Menu is really interesting without being gratuitously weird. Friendly well-informed staff, very nice coffee and it's always cosy inside.
H.
My husband and I have a range of dietary complications, but I had a feeling they might be able to cater to us, due to their approach to food. They know absolutely everything in their food. I gave them a list of our restrictions and they said they could make us a menu to fit them! So we went along recently, and it was delicious! I'm not sure what the menu is like for normal diners (they said it was the same, but I never saw it) but they had a list of four courses, three options for each and you can choose either 3 or 4 courses. We went for four, as they were quite little. Actually getting dessert in a restaurant is a rare thing for us these days. We will definitely be back.
J.
Great coffee and vegetarian food at Hillside. The menu is always interesting and the space is small but light and bright. The service is friendly and attentive and I enjoy going there.
R.
Foodies rejoice! What a cracker!
Went here for the full monty, seven courses with wine to match. Seven courses really ended up being about eleven if you include the homemade sourdough/bulgerwheat (GF), pallet cleansers, appetising snacks and petit fours, coffee (People's YUM!).
The three of us all agreed we'd received such a unique an wonderful dining experience.
Three and a half hours of the most carefully selected, locally sourced, lovingly prepared, vegan food. Each course with it's own story, every wine/drink, something different from the last (hard to do seven times!)
Favourites were: the pre-snacks, coffee marinaded beet with hazelnut butter, the bulger wheat loaf, Cashew cheese and seaweed mistake.
We all had different wine pallets so there was a different favourite for everyone.
10/10 across the board. Nikita and her team do such an amazing job. Support your local innovative business, they've really got te aroha.
A.
The food was amazing, so fresh and so different to anything you could ever cook at home .Staff were very informed and new a lot about their wine too. Chefs explained all the dishes. Can't fault this place for dinner!
K.
I was here about a month ago. I decided to write a review now as I really enjoyed the food and I've thought about returning for a meal, but one aspect of my meal just really rubbed me the wrong way. They offer fried eggs. I'm not really a fan. I asked if I could have scrambled. The server just looked at me and said "no" and then just stared at me. No explanation, no apology, just "no". I stared blankly back and was like "uuuhhhhhh, ok" and then tried to pick something else to eat. He sold me on the omelette and it was indeed delicious. Restaurants can refuse to cook whatever they want. I am a firm believer in the customer isn't always right. It was just so weird in how it was handled and at the end of the day I was asking for scrambled eggs. I just didn't see what the issue was as we were the only table ordering. I just was really rubbed the wrong way by our server's vibe and haven't wanted to go back. Maybe if I walk by and see he's not there I'll stop in again.
S.
Best fine dining (Veg/Vegan) restaurant in Wellinon & Lower North island.
Max and all the chefs are very talented, good service and the menu is always involving.
Super tasty food 👍, one of my staple cafes.
A.
I love that you can build your own breakfast at hillside - delicious and fresh!
S.
An absolutely fabulous dining experience food, wine, service and music 10 /10. After 3 hours we left with a feeling of great satisfaction. Our best dinning experience ever
N.
I love this place, local and foraged food. If you're a fan of Chef Asher Boote's less is more aesthetic and clean, but flavourful dining, come here. And the prices are unbeatable for what you get in return.
T.
Service is a bit slow and they got the order wrong. Menu is unusual in that you pick separate items for your cooked breakfast rather than the usual combinations. Very small place but seems popular with the locals.
m.
I Highly recommend this place..simple and understated, The food/quality produce is treated with the utmost respect and skill! Delicious from start to finish - Vegetarian/Vegan or meat eater - everyone is expertly catered for with enough lead time given .
S.
Amazing restaurant, great food and astmosphere and the Wine list is amazing, so good to see locally sourced ingredients, including the beach herbs from south coast. And the sourdough is the bestnyou will have!
S.
Wonderful seasonal, local, vegetarian cooking. Beautifully presented too. The restaurant is small so make sure to book ahead. Menu changes daily
A.
The best high-end vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Wellington. The five and seven course dinners are absolutely worthwhile - highly recommended.
G.
Food and service are excellent. We had the vegan 5 course and every course was imaginative and delicious.
V.
