Authentic Malaysian restaurant in the heart of the city. We tried the Curry Laksa - decent size bowl with fragrant curry broth. I was somewhat expecting large seafood specimens but perhaps to achieve a lower price point (only $1 more than the chicken version) smaller ones were used. Char Kuay Teow was very good - appropriate 'wok hei' and is probably the best halal one I've ever had. Fried meehoon was very yummy, some larger prawns were used - was also happy to find clam meat. All in all a worthwhile place to dine if you're looking for authentic Malaysian food.

Good food and taste. We were 4 adults and 3 kids. We had fire vege dish. Prawn dish and lamb dish. Can’t remember the exact names. Pratha or martabak were really nice. With satay chicken skewers. And soft drinks . Overall bill 210$. This was expensive mainly bcuz we went over board with chicken skewers and ordered 5 otherwise the bill shd have been around 175$. Definitely worth visiting. And it’s halal.

Been in Malaysia for few years and Istana Malaysia has reminded me of my time there. The food was great, and it was like home food at my friend’s house. My wife and I enjoyed our meal and plan to go back for more…

Come here again today as it was closed yesterday. Worth the wait! We are so satisfied with the delicious dishes served to us. My son finished 3 sets of roti canai which is unbelievable 😂 DEFINITELY highly recommended 👍 and we will always come back here again whenever down to Welly in future. 5 star service and the best Rendang curry I've had in NZ accompanied with the superb house buttery chardonnay. Hubby had the tender and tasty chicken korma with roti and coconut rice, a bottle of Tiger. We will be back.

I took my freind here because she wanted a genuine south indian/ malay meal and had suggested another restaurant that wasn't the genuine deal. The seafood laksa was traditionally sour in the right way and was amazing. I ordered my friend the nasi lenak beef rendang which is a perfect example of that dish too. Tori made to order and excellent as expected. If you want an example of a refined malaysian meal in wellington you cannot do better!

Istana in Malay means "a palace"; this place seem to fulfil the expectations. Beef rendang: a spicy dish (I had it with 1L of water (!) and steamed rice; the rice is to be ordered separately). I liked it but perhaps a bit less spiciness could reveal the other interesting componants of which this dish is comprised. The garlic roti was great. Served hot, had a nice portion of fried garlic and can assist to overcome the beef rendang's spiciness. One minor matter: a glass of wine can not be priced at about 60% and up of a main dish price (lunch menu. In the evening it is around 43% and up more). The way to promote and elevate the wine culture is diferrent. A price decrease should be considered and would only do good for that purpose.

Absolutely the best Malaysian food in New Zealand (out of the 20ish places we’ve been at least). Not heavy at all and you can tell there is serious care put into ingredient quality. Fresh coconut and an effort to source local. We live in Auckland and thought we had our top Malaysian place picked, but this one takes it hands down.

The chicken korma with rice and naan bread is a great comfort food option and very tasty. Also had the Malaysian dessert Kuih Talam, and definitely recommend trying the authentic taste. The atmosphere is lovely and perfect for any occasion. I always enjoy going back to this restaurant.

I had a wonderful evening in Istana Malaysia. They serves authentic Malaysian food with reasonable pricing. The friendly owner make sure all my needs were met. Friendly staff. We ordered 2 dishes and neither was particularly satisfactory. We made a complaint about the lack of chicken in the chicken noodles dish and the owner came to talk to us and was very apologetic and offered another meal and dessert. It was a great response!

We went into Istana Malaysia in Courtenay Place, as the exterior of the building looked charming. We loved the inside atmosphere too. We were greeted by Meri who made us feel very welcome. We didn't wait too long for the chef - Meri's husband Danny - to create our food. Absolutely delicious food. They are celebrating 27 years of their restaurant business. I am pescatarian/ vegetarian and I found lots of yummy food to eat. The atmosphere was great. Danny and Meri are lovely people. Gorgeous food, and not too expensive. The perfect combination of a lovely dining experience. So, we went there for dinner the next night too. Totally recommend this restaurant.

I had planned my sisters 30th birthday from Australia as I could not make the event, this was an important time for me but Meri was fantastic and went above and beyond to make sure this ran smoothly for us! Her communication was amazing and so we're all her staff that night. I was told the food was amazing and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. My mum had gone earlier in the day to sort decor and the kind gentleman took care of it and assured her they are happy to do it for her without her asking! Thank you so much Meri and team for making this happen when it is already so hard to plan and bring everything together from another country! Having lived in Malaysia for years I can attest to the food being authentic - well apart from the banana roti on the dessert menu which definitely needs to become authentic Malaysian fare. We often try this restaurant when in Wellington and it has never failed to please.

This restaurant is a treasure. The service was prompt and welcoming, the atmosphere is warm and comfortable, and, most importantly, the food is incredible. The curry dishes are the best I've had in New Zealand and four other countries. I was able to taste several different dishes, and each one was authentic and expertly prepared. There are a lot of great places to eat in New Zealand, but you'd be missing out if you didn't come here.

Nice place but the food was quite disappointing. I've eaten a LOT of different curries including Malaysian Indian and this didn't seem good even for an average home cook - the meat and vegetables in the curry seem undercooked and without much flavour. I'm surprised others think it's the best Malaysian food they've had. Roti chennai was good and the service was good, with the manager or similar being overly friendly but would not recommend.

Brought my friends here for my birthday. Everyone loved the food. Their roti chanai, rendant and curries were stars of the night. Every single person cleaned their dishes. The owners were such sweethearts; Mary made some offered to make some traditional kuihs in lieu of having a traditional cake for my birthday. Loved that I could share my culture with friends here in Wellington. If you'd like kuihs ordered; just let her know. The didurr galang and kuih talam she made for us was amazing 😍😍😍

We spent the weekend in Wellington and Istana Malayasia was chosen initially because it was within walking distance of our hotel. This ended up being one of our best decisions so much so that when we return to Wellington we will definitely be heading back to this restaurant. The atmosphere was wonderful and the staff, especially the lady owner were extremely friendly. It was the food however that made the night. We had the Lamb Curry and the Honey Buttered Chicken with Roti, Raita and Mango Chutney, topped off with one of the nicest Reds we’ve had in sometime. We could not fault the meal. That would have to be the best tasting Buttered Chicken we have ever had and the Roti was so good we ordered another one. Well done Istana, we will be back.

Such a great place! We went when the restaurant was almost closed. The host was kind dnoeno to let us in even when the restaurant was empty. They cooked a nice chicken and beef meal for us. We had a great meal at Istana Malaysia. It was our first time there and we were most impressed from start to finish. The service was excellent, very friendly and just the right amount of time between courses. We tried the beef and chicken satay - the satay sauce was nice and plenty of it. Good vegetable samosas as well. For our mains we had the beef rendang with was very nice. It had a good amount of spice to it and excellent flavour. And the mee goreng went down well also. We will be back to try out more of the menu.

I now know, both Meri aunty and uncle very well..I bet you.., it is one of the best places in Wellington for the signature Malaysian dishes.
