Reviews of Ombra
K.
A cozy Italian. Had dinner myself so couldn’t try much but all the dishes from other tables are looking stunning. Friendly and helpful staffs.
Had new season sweet carrot salad with yogurt and apricot. The seasoning has a bit of cumin and pistachio and something. Absolutely melting
The pizza base wasn’t crunchy as I would expect but overall it was nice. Could be the one that I ordered.
E.
Had a fantastic time. Both of us had a drink, shared two pizzas and each had dessert. Was very reasonable, I recommend. We had an early booking and that was nice because it did get louder as the evening went on :)
R.
The food was not bad with generous amount of pasta and Risotto. If they had more meat dish it would be better. It has a good atmosphere
H.
The market fish was stunning & I got to wear my new dress out to my dinner date! Twitter/IG: @itshazelsimone 💘
J.
Absolutely AMAZING. Can't wait to come back. Hopefully next time we remember to leave room for dessert 🍨
V.
We love Ombra❣️ Great food, lovely friendly, efficient service with a tonne of atmosphere.
A.
So YUMMY! I've lived in Wellington for several years and walked by this restaurant so many times but have never tried it until last night. Everything we ordered was delicious. Definitely the best Italian we've had in Wellington. Good food is is not the only aspect that makes a good restaurant and I was also impressed with the service. My glass was never empty and we were never in want of anything because we were checked-in on at the right moments. You could tell that the staff knew their jobs/role and everything seemed to run very smoothly. Would highly recommend especially for date night.
J.
The polenta chips is a must everytime I visit.
M.
My partner and I didn't have a great time we were here. Well, they sure did their best on this 2nd visit of ours!
Great staff, great food, nice chef -- all very satisfying.
L.
Beautiful ambience and happened to arrive during aperitif time.
I ordered the duck risotto and it was delicious. I feel they could do with a few more gluten free options though.
N.
Tasty, simple Italian cuisine and very generous portion sizes (perhaps because they are meant to be shared). Pays to book in advance if you don’t want to find yourself seated behind the bar.
T.
Four of us dined last Friday, shared food and drinks were fantastic, service was constrained by L2 but the team did a good job under these conditions. Food: the rocket, fennel & orange salad was divine, the steak was perfectly juicy and the meatballs had a good depth of flavour. Standout dish was the bacalao - it managed to be rich (expected) but also light instead of the usual tendency to oiliness that comes with this dish. Recommend you book well in advance, they do reserve some spots for drop in but these went fast.
M.
Good food. Good service and ambiance. Easily accessible location. However 250ml wine is served in a milk bottle, probably it’s for the pun but bit off idea for wine (but that could be a subjective opinion)
Service is fast, food is fresh so it’s a good go-to option for lunch or dinner both.
K.
Meatball sauce had tuna in it which was really interesting to try. I liked it! Gnocchi wad recommended to us but I don't think it was my taste. It was a bit soft and sticky for me. Staff were really friendly!! Enjoyed their happy hour drinks!
M.
WOW! Enjoyed lunch here and had the Gnocchi with sage butter, kale and hazelnuts, along with the Arancini and the Artichoke salad with herb yogurt and sunflower seeds. The food was so delicious, I could not stop eating the Gnocchi. Service was excellent, and they make a mean cocktail. Thanks guys for an awesome lunch, can't wait to come back.
K.
Excellent restaurant with stellar service. We came in during the happy hour and ordered a selection of dishes to share. The server was honest and even warned us when we might have over ordered. The food was excellent, the food came quickly and surpassed expectations. Drinks happy hour from 3-6 which includes the lovely aperol spritz
R.
We visited Wellington over the Christmas period and Ombra was by far the best food we experienced. Great staff and accommodating with dietary requirements 🙂 thanks!
G.
Went on a Sunday afternoon, food was nice -
Pizza - nice small woodfired, would get again
Risotto - cheese, is all I could taste
Gnocchi - best dish by far
Chocolate lava cake - didn't taste very rich (like I would expect with Whittakers chocolate)
They seem to be understaffed when we went, the staff clears table fast but didn't check about clearing and just came in between us and grabbed plates and cups etc.
Reasonably priced and nice for a Sunday afternoon.
S.
Seated across from chefs (Erald & Marco) at the bar as the place was full of happy customers. They kept us company for our delicious meal.
Great food to share, ordered a bit of everything.
K.
Great food! Italian with a kiwi twist, amazing service and legit Italian spritz and drinks! Must visit if your in Wellington.
M.
The restaurant was clean, wait staff were observant and attentive without being in our face.
The kitchen is open so you can see meals being prepared and cooked.
Personally I thought it was pricey for the size of the food, e.g. $8 for one small arancino
However, if $ is not a challenge then this place is bound to become a firm favourite as the wine choices are great and the food has plenty of depth in flavour.
There are a few vegan, dairy free, gluten free and vegetarian options among the wide choice of meals available.
S.
Amazing service! Very trendy place. You basically order course by course and share everything which is a different and enjoyable experience. The food is very tasty. We had the polenta, grilled courgette, and steak with a tiramisu to finish. Tiramisu was very average but everything else was thoroughly enjoyable. A great experience nonetheless.
E.
Excellent food and great service. Really enjoyed our meal there. Would recommend
E.
Great food ... great food ... great food.! Definitely love this place for their cuisine and will always return 😋 so yummy.
We did notice that the service a little bit 'flatter' than usual and respect that the service staff were wearing masks which must be so hard.
R.
Food was fantastic and the portions were just right for sharing. Good vibe and atmosphere, and music wasn't too loud that it drowned out conversation. Service was attentive. The drinks didn't hit the right notes with us though.
J.
The nduja pizza was pretty good, reminding me of some good pizza I’ve had in Italy whereas the coppa pizza was kinda disappointing, flavourless.. we didn’t enjoy it much.
M.
Anchovy pizza and the polenta chips were great.
Reasonable prices, fast food and service was ok.
Cons waitress took my plate when I was still chewing the last piece...for me that is a big NOT to do in service. Other that that was fine.
R.
Superb food and service as always!
V.
The food is so good and are well portioned. The cocktails are to die for.
Lily our server was wonderful and polite, the rest of the staff were really attentive.
Will definitely be going again!
N.
We (2 people) came here around 6:00 on a weeknight and were seated without a reservation. The food was all amazing. We ordered the gnocchi, a pizza, meatballs, and yuzu sorbet. All delicious. The device and drinks were also great.
O.
INCREDIBLE food, great presentation, amazing atmosphere as close to authentic as you can get. I had the slow cooked duck risotto and it was PERFECT
S.
Great food, service, ambiance- the gnocchi is superb! Lots of vegetarian options.
S.
Supremely fabulous food in an stripped back traditional environment. No faults with food, drink selection and especially service and team here! Can not recommend highly enough, happily give 6stars if possible!
A.
Absolutely recommend 👌🏽 the food was to die for and very reasonable prices and portions!
M.
Ombra’s menu offers a mouthwatering range of Italian options, designed to share, so it can be quite a challenge nailing down a selection and not feeling like you’re missing out on some other delicious option. This definitely requires multiple visits. We went with a broccolini pizzette, lamb cacciatora and charred zucchini. All turned out to be great choices but you can hardly go wrong here. If we hadn’t had another venue to get to I would have definitely stayed for the Whittaker’s chocolate volcano
A.
Absolutely loved this place. Food was so good, ambience perfect and Stella was the best host. Even though they were fully booked, they happily accommodated me. I have the Lamb Ragu Pappardelle with Pecorino which was great but the true hero of the night was the Pannacotta with Strawberry in prosecco. Highly recommend to dine here and staff is so lovely
D.
Amazing flavours in each dish. Really inventive use of artichokes and other ingredients in their various insalata options, great pizza flavours, clever ice cream flavour combinations (mandarin scoop and an olive oil scoop) and special cocktails.
A.
What an evening and where shall we start?Main courses were out of this world. Superb. Cooked to perfection. Rich Italian flavours exploding on our palate. Delectable Italian bread mopping up the squisito deliziosa (exquisite delicious) juices/gravy. The Italian Chanti a perfect pairing with our selections.
Service was outstanding. Right from the person who handled our bookings, to the kitchen staff who prepared our Michelin Star main courses, to the lovely young lady who looked after our table. Her kowledge of the menu, guiding us through our selections and overall service was impeccable. Ombra boasts a suite of very high calibered personnel/staff.
Long after the evening was over, its magic lingered on into the late night.

Great location! Beautiful settings! Very friendly staffs! Our lunch was delicious!
s.
Great ambient, attentive staff, interesting menu, serious about the wine they are selling, I saw them let customer try the wine before they ordered which was amazing!- it's always a huge hesitate to try new wine, having a sip before having a glass could totally avoid disappointment and make ur night a breeze! Absolutely loved the rissoto and pizza we ordered. Would love to try their fish in sashimi style too next time as they run out today! We also had a tiramisu for dessert- waited for 20min because they forgot about our order. He served it to us quickly after that and made it on the house too and apologized very sincerely. Could not give him lower than 5 stars.
B.
Delicious food! Staff were very friendly. Our server, Liv, was absolutely lovely! Our first time here, and we will return.
T.
Love the basil cocktail.. omg i think i had 7 of them that night.. really nice service and amazing food.. one of my favourite restaurants in Wellington.
A.
EXCEPTIONAL food and service from people who genuinely enjoy what they are doing
A must try if you are wanting a great experience
S.
Best pizza place in Wellington. Staff are totally onto it. Order heaps and share it around the table. Great selection of beers and wine.
F.
Very tasty Italian food
Service is good too.
Because they so popular, and also the location is so good
So, you need to walk in during holiday period as they don't take booking
T.
This place is great!! The pizza was lovely and the tiramisu was the best I've had!! The wait staff are so helpful and friendly. Just an absolute wonderful experience!!
F.
Ombra is always great- food, drinks and service are awesome. Good place to bring anyone as menu is varied and so something for everyone.
A.
Good food, but it's a rare Italian restaurant that doesn't like kids.
A.
Delicious food and drinks! Everything we ordered came out quickly and was really packed with a lot of flavour. Prices were reasonable too for the quality. Our waitress Stella did and awesome job of looking after our table with her bright and friendly manner. Looking forward to coming back next time I'm in Welly!
J.
Best Italian small plate food in Wellington. Great service. Bright environs
E.
Really nice food, all dishes were exceptional. Great staff.
A.
Every time we visit Wellington, it is in our itinerary. It has a season menu so every time you go, there will be something interesting to try due to its tapas style dinning.
Tip:
Sit at the bar and start with a Cocktail - Basil Smash whilst you watch the wonderful food keep passing you and tempting to order.
Duck Risotto is a must as is the lamb rump. After that choose anything and you will not be disappointed.
T.
Favourite restaurant in Wellington. Always consistently amazing. Great selection of Italian cuisine. Beautiful wine list. It's a MUST visit if you're in Wellington.
A.
Duck resotto with Gold Rush cocktail and Basil Smash cocktail (not in picture) was a fantastic way to finish the night off. Light and uplifted vibes, staff is friendly and helps to keep the vibe going.
C.
Everything was a “wow”! Food-10/10, service-10/10,wine and cocktails list-10/10. They do new menus every now and then, one of our fav spot in town.
J.
As always fantastic food and flavors. Great service. How lucky have we been to visit for my birthday evening dinner last week....being in lockdown now...thank you!
G.
Yes a wonderful meal to be enjoyed here. Risotto excellent, meat balls fantastic. Go for 2 dishes initially unless you are really hungry. Staff very good
A.
Yummy food. Was my first time, and the food was good, the service awesome
D.
Fantastic food and stunning service! The waiters are very knowledgeable about the dishes should you have any questions the glossary on the menu can't answer, are very attentive and fast with water refills (extremely grateful for this on a warm summer evening). The food is designed to be shared so is a terrific place for groups, the arancino shine with mushroom flavour and are a great size for one, the venison meatballs are complimented greatly by the carrot puree and blueberry chutney. Delicious fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and quality bread! The setting is cozy, tables surround the bar where you also may be seated to dine if the restaurant is busy (it was bustling on a Wednesday evening!). Curtains offer optional additional privacy along one of the sides, a nice touch.
R.
The service was excellent. Well priced, food flavoursome and nice vibe going on
G.
Food was really delicious and the service from the staff was exceptional. Will definitely visit again!
A.
The food was really good and we really enjoyed our stay. Kudos to the staff :) I gave only 4 Stars since my son didn't get a pizza Salami although they had Salami...
G.
Loved the food. Perfectly cooked and never thought I'd rave about the humble brussel sprout. Delicious. Great food, great wine, great service. Made dining alone a pleasure. Thank you.
L.
Delicious food and friendly staff. The place itself has a sense of class and warmth. Pricing is on the higher end.
C.
DELICIOUS
Wow - what wonderful food and service, on Saturday night. The service started even before we arrived. Had booked on line but had to change numbers. Alex rung to check he had the right amount of seats :) Were welcomed on our arrival and the service, from all staff was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble. Our family from Auckland were also very impressed. Will certainly recommend to all. Thank you
L.
What fantastic food! Really loved it and will be back soon for another sitting!
P.
Went here to celebrate a family event with my wife and two teenage sons. Was seated right away and the service was excellent. Was great to be able to talk without having to yell to be heard. The small tables with high ceiling and stripped back decor give a really comfortable come as you are vibe. The small sharing dishes worked well for our group as our kids have different tastes. Only dispointment was that some of entrees were burned. The desserts especially the chocolate bomb were very good. Prices aren't expensive but portions are on the petit side . Also if you are avoiding carbs you may struggle with the menu. I would go again..
B.
I am out the gate impressed with Ombra. I have lived in Wellington for 7 years and never been to Ombra until this week; it always seemed like such an obvious choice and I didn't like that, i'm not sure why but I was never drawn to it. This week however we went for my friend's birthday. I was floored by the customer service. I am always going on about how important customer service is and frankly in Wellington it is not that easy to find. Boom. Ombra blew me away. Their staff know what they are doing. They are so friendly, good at their job, aware of what is happening and are actually conciously creating an incredible environment for you to relax and enjoy your night out in. I am so impressed with their staff, the atmosphere and vibe was awesome too.
J.
Walked in without a booking on a Friday night, the place was fully packed. The staff kindly offered to have us at the bar table seats. The food come quickly with my favourite being the shredded duck risotto, and the venison meatball. Loads of flavour and very well priced.
A.
Delicious and cute little space... definitely come for the happy hour and get some prosseco with complimentary nibbles :)
R.
Really delicious food here. We had the roasted cauliflower with walnut - fabulous, a zucchini dish, and a brilliant mini pizza. The coffee was pretty good too. All of came away mighty impressed, and looking forward to trying other menu items.
b.
Amazing ambience, which is down to attentive staff.. we ordered the venison meatballs, with carrot puree and blueberry compote, roasted Brussel sprouts with their secret dressing. The layer of flavours was mouth watering, we will be back
T.
Too good. We had the roasted cauliflower with blue vein and walnuts, the pepperoni, mozzarella and gherkin pizza and the lamb rump cacciatora, all as share plates. Sensational flavours, great service, atmosphere and value. Highly recommend
G.
Lovely ambience, friendly staff and of course, delicious food! We ordered the mushroom/mozzarella arancini balls, roasted eggplant with fior di latte, venison meatballs - and our favourite on the menu - the slow cooked duck risotto in mascarpone which was one of the best I’ve had in NZ!
N.
Nice atmosphere and service. Food was yum!
M.
Didn't eat just had a drink. Loved the styling and atmosphere. Felt like I was in Europe.
J.
My sister and I went to Ombra for an after work dinner last night and I thought being Thursday night, we probably wouldn't need to book. Thank goodness we did - it was full! Great duck risotto (perfectly cooked and seasoned and heaps of it), moreish polenta chips (not floury) smothered in parmesan cheese, tasty Nduja pizette and divine tiramisu. Fast, pleasant service, meals arrived promptly.
A.
Excellent food, great value and very friendly staff... Will be back!
G.
We found this place by chance. We just ordered a hot drink and a plate of palenta chips for a snack. The food was delicious. The service could not be faulted. Our hostess was very attentive, refilling water glasses, clearing away the table and quickly replacing a knife dropped on the floor without having to be asked. We will certainly go back.
F.
The service was excellent and food was delicious, had a great time. Thanks!
C.
Very nice staff. Enthusiastic and engaging. Great food in their own style with some delicious healthy options. Happy hour for those of us who are early diners. Keep up the good work!
M.
Great service, food and drink. Fantastic atmosphere, as well as decor. We'll worth a look in if you're after Italian food, especially on a weekend. Online booking for reservations is available.
T.
Amazing food best service. Faultless. Impeccable. Affordable
A.
Really good food and atmosphere. The waiter had really good knowledge of the dishes which I appreciated. The gnocchi was amazing, so everything after that wasn't hitting the expectation. The pizza was a tad of let down for the price.
B.
Great innovative and tasty food in a casual atmosphere
K.
Delicious food and super friendly staff. Thanks for the yum negroni!
s.
Fantastic food great atmosphere and vibe, and a new menu, the steak is the current best in town, very tender, juicy and thick
R.
As a first time visit we were impressed and pleased. Our waitress was very helpful with her advice and the service was excellent throughout, respectful and not overdone. We chose to share our meals with the fish as the main. All were excellent, kept simple without rich or strong flavoured sauces. The fish was perfectly cooked. Set in an old building the decor is suited to an Italian restaurant. Great vibe, great place. Happy to recommend and return.
R.
Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Great atmosphere busy but not too noisy. Recommend ordering 2 to 3 small plates per person the food was delicious. Would definitely come again.
S.
Great pizza. Gnocchi not as good but still not bad. Pizza was so good we ordered another one. Excellent customer service with great vibes. Highly recommended.
S.
The service and ambiance were amazing, but the food was absolutely incredible! I highly recommend the flatbread, risotto and chickpea ‘meatballs’. Make a reservation, because the locals definitely know what’s good. Ensure you allow yourself time to enjoy the experience.
T.
Fresh taste, great combination of spices with great price.
R.
My husband and I came here with my nana on Tuesday night. We had the loveliest meal. There menu contains numerous vegetarian and vegan options, as well as meat options, all of which were hearty good quality staples with an interesting twist. Delicious! The food was well priced. There were some great drink options, including those not commonly seen such as Campari and limonella. The staff were friendly and helpful but gave us lots of space and didn’t rush us. The fit out is lovely - trendy and refined but not too formal. Highly recommend!!
W.
The prawn pizzeta is just amazing 🔥. Really good service and the affogato is just perfect 💚
C.
Fantastic food, lively ambiance and friendly staff! It was busy on a Wednesday evening but we were seated without too much of a wait, and appreciated being kept informed on the progress to get a table. We ordered a pizza, gnocchi, pappardelle and the venison meatballs. Everything was delicious! Would come here more often if we lived in Wellington. Hint: during the week, nearby on-street parking is free after 6pm!
B.
Tasty food and a nice casual atmosphere. Great place to go with friends!
A.
Excellent service, delicious food!
S.
Amazing Italian food with great service and atmosphere. Definitely coming back again. Great range of vegetarian food also!
C.
In Wellington for the night needed something to eat early on a Sunday. Found Ombra, so glad I went in. Great food, great service great atmosphere
Next time I'm back will make a reservation and enjoy a full dinner
Thanks team
Bar guy Sunday 13 June
H.
Great food, drinks and atmosphere. I enjoyed the Brussel sprouts dish and gnocchi. Pizza is nice too.
J.
Really good food but pretty small portions. The team do constantly bug you if you need anything else so definitely felt hurried along. They'd just be doing what they're told though and the food tasted great
K.
Absolutely magic. Thoroughly enjoyed. The service the food the wine having happy hour superb. So recommend it. Taste of Italy without being in Italy. Lots of fun. Big thanks. See you again soon.
A.
Absolutely loved our meal here- we ordered almost every dish on the menu as we were a large group. Very flavoursome. Lots of vegetarian options too
K.
Absolutely outstanding Italian food in Wellington and prices are reasonable as well. The staff are friendly, and the ambience is cozy and casual. The place has a certain charm and character and doesn't look like a generic restaurant like so many Italian restaurants you encounter across the world
G.
Amazing food and excellent service, no surprises that is is busy however they accommodated us at the bar area. We are from Auckland and this is the best Italian Restaurant we have experienced
T.
Cool Italian spot serving small plate Italian dishes - think tapas, but Italian. Some unique offerings, all very tasty. Next time we would order a couple dishes, wait, then order some more as everything comes out quite quickly/as it’s ready. Thanks for a great evening out!
H.
I was there a couple of days ago. I hadn't reserved, just showed up around 7:30 and managed to get a place at the bar. The stuff is friendly and talkative. Food is just exquisite and the price is quite affordable. The nice atmosphere, the delicious meals and talking Italian made me feel home. I will definitely be back next time when I will be in Wellington.
C.
One of our party is certain this was the best dining experience she'd ever had. Food was absolutely fantastic and drinks were great. Nice seating and decor. The staff were particularly noteworthy - we weren't sure what to order for our party of four and asked them to choose for us. They took us on a journey of culinary delight and explained everything as we went. One of the best in Wellington in my opinion.
B.
One of the best restaurants on Cuba Street! Had a delicious meal here last night. Couldn’t fault anything at all, apart from the fact we over ordered because everything just sounded so damn delicious 😅 please bring back your incredible squid ink risotto you had on the menu when you first opened!!
P.
The pumpkin risotto seemed to be just strong cheese and rice, no sign of pumpkin, not even a flavour of it. Pizza was good, but waitress seemed friendly but dis-interested. Taking our orders but not asking us all what we wanted, just half the table. Giving us time to decide, but not returning for 15 mins and ordering seemed quite confusing. It was an average experience.
J.
Shared plates of wonderful Italian food...the best
江.
The restaurant is a great place for dinner. Food is amazing and staff are friendly but not too friendly that disturb the relaxing feeling between me and my accompany.
R.
Such good food and great knowledgable service
I.
Absolutely beautifull food and service! Very friendly and attentive waitress, super fast service. The gnocci and zucchini risotto were amazing!! Nice atmosphere, would definitely recommend!
L.
Lucky to score the bar table overlooking the kitchen. Delicious food. So good I want to come back tommorrow. Great service and great atmosphere. Fun place.
E.
Gnocchi was a treat and prices were'nt obscene. Good service, and sat right next to the streetside with some great company. Expect dishes to come out in random ordering but good 15-30min wait time
N.
AMAZING, doesn't do this food justice. Service was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Will definitely be back
J.
Fantastic ambiance, superb food, and impeccable service. Despite arriving during the busiest part of the night, we were warmly welcomed by the maitre d' and seated at the bar to wait for a table to become available. Here, we were briefed on the bar menu and drinks.
The moment a table became available, we were seated and given full menus. Drink orders came out promptly. The wait staff were extremely helpful and honest with their appraisal and opinions of the food, including what would go well with what we already had. Their recommendation on the appropriate wine pairing was also spot-on.
The food itself was faultless. Each dish complemented the other dishes, while also standing on its own merit. Flavours were exquisite. Particular favourites included the venison meatballs with beetroot and smoked ricotta, the pork belly, and the eggplant parmigiana.
This is my third time visiting Ombra, and nothing about them has changed. A rare 5/5 is therefore appropriate. I shall definitely be back many more times in the future.
Y.
FANTASTIC food! I'd give this 10 out of 5 stars if I could. Great service and great ambiance. Tapas style eating and whilst the individual dishes seem pricey it very much compares with a regular upper end restaurant where you would pay the same amount by the time you're done with far less variety. Venison meatballs in aubergine puree are my favourite!
R.
Thank you for a lovely lunch for one! Perfect marinaro pizetto and rocket salad. Lovely staff. Excellent. No need to go to Italy ⚘
B.
Nice homely and tasty. Fyi dishes are meant to be shared and they come out as they are ready not altogether. Would def go there again.
Must note that we didn't specify how we wanted our steak, it came out absolutely perfect. 10/10
M.
Really nice place to eat, very casual with delicious, wholesome food. Only issue is that place is very cramped, and often wait staff can be dealing with someone and they are right against your table, or sometimes even hanging over it. Add to this, wait staff reached over my food so often to fill my glass, without being asked. Really good food, wait time is ideal, but the causality can make the experience a little uncomfortable and too personal.
F.
We used this beautiful space for an event showcasing a new collection & fell in love with every aspect of Ombra. The food is INCREDIBLE (highly recommend the arancini balls), the location is central and the staff were so welcoming. We'd definitely suggest this spot for some of the most delicious food you could ever hope for! We will be back! X
P.
Italian style is great food wise but in terms of Italian wine, they can improve their selection of chiantis.
Great staff
A.
Panzanella salad was cut with quite big slices, and had so much vinegar, that we could not finish it. Pepperoni pizza had good ingredients, but was also crudely cut. The beef steak was very good, as well as tiramisu. Generally it was ok, but I doubt we will visit Ombra again
I.
Great service - turned up without a reservation, and kept informed as we waited for our table. Well looked after at the table by knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Excellent food - delicious dishes for every choice. Mushroom starter was a winner👍
J.
We loved Ombra. Amazing Italian-style food and wonderful service. It was busy the first night so passing by today we went in on a whim and were not disappointed. We had the panzanella salad as a starter and venison meatballs as an entree. I spent some time in the Cortona region of Italy in 2011 and this has been the closest to that food I've had since then.
A.
The waitress was completely on board with the menu. Helped us make good food orders
The food was absolutely on point. No faults. It's about just all sharing the space with the other diners. But somehow it works
Magnificent experience
D.
I was quite surprised to see the 4.9 rating in Zomato so I thought I had to try it out during my time at Wellington. And I had a pretty good time. It took way too long to decide what to eat because you would want to try absolutely everything!
I would recommend the "Don Emilio" sausages and the beef meatballs, which were the highlights for the night! Overall, the food comes in smaller portions that what I expected, so thankfully we weren't starving when we came or else the bill would've gone above $150 for 4. Service was awesome, the guys at the bar table not only prepared the drinks but knew the food menu back to front + were friendly giving us recommendations.
Ombra was busy - book early if you want a table! I was placed at the bar table area with my family and we ate there throughout the meal, but it was still a comfortable experience.
It's a shame that I didn't try out the pizzettes, a dish I kept seeing throughout the night - until next time, Ombra!
A.
Yummy pizzas. Very nice staff👍
M.
What a marvellous tapas restaurant! The food was wonderful and the cocktails well made.
The staff were friendly and attentive, and made our meal that much better.
Value for money is reasonable, given the district - I would recommend Ombra for special nights like dates or birthdays.
M.
My two friends and I went for dinner one night when we were on vacation in Wellington and we had the BEST time! We sat at the counter right in front of the chefs. Those poor chefs. They had to listen to my friend talk their ear off for what was probably 3 hours. It was so fun to watch them make all of the dishes: the rocket salad was pears was great, the pizza was pretty fantastic. And I've lived in NY. It was the perfect size and fresh and delicious. They sent us free gnocchi and comped one of our pizzas because it took too long to get to us.
L.
Had the best negroni made by Cahalan!
T.
One the liveliest and most fun places for Italian food in town, and a low-key and often forgotten Wellington institution. Most things on the menu are solid tending towards excellent and the drinks list is short but sweet. Sitting at the bar is always a treat. Great for a date, catch with a friend or start of a fun night out.
j.
Spent a few days in Wellington and felt like Italian food, ended up at Ombra. Inspired. If you haven't been, you need to experience their fantastic food, friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. We will be back next time we are in the area.
H.
Amazing gnocchis! Small selection of rose but good wines. Very accommodating staff. Busy and vibrant place.
R.
Surprisingly good! We had an early lunch and the food was excellent. There was an informal friendly ambience in this place - and the service was good too.
Only the Negroni drink was disappointing, being overpriced: this is a drink I would have made at home with better results.
K.
Absolutely loved it. We walked by on our way to a different place, and on a whim decided to walk in. It was thee best place I have eaten at in Wellington. The atmosphere was amazing and really amped up by kind knowledgable and generous staff. We had a birthday girl in our party who was treated so special. Got an ice cream treat with a birthday candle and upon leaving a hug too! I mean come on. Great coffee. Reasonable le prices. I will be back.
A.
Our friend has been raving about Ombra for a while now but a week ago was our first visit. The waiter asked everyone who came in if they've been to Ombra before. He would then tell them the meaning of Ombra in Italian and explain how the food is intended for sharing. Interestingly enough, he would ask my friend a question but didn't stick around long enough to hear my sister answer. He did this everytime he'd come to our table. He was pleasant enough but I found his behavior rude.
D.
All the makings of an excellent evening. Great company, great atmosphere, great food and wine, and charming service. A menu based around sharing tasting plates. Enticing choices and a good variety of wine matches. A must visit when in Wellington
O.
Great Polpette and the Lamb parpadelle was awesome. The staff is very nice and gave good suggestions too. Also, don't hesitate to go and ask if they have room, even if it seems crowded, you might find a spot at the bar!
N.
Recently enjoyed a Tapas style lunch at Ombra. The yummy food met our expectations and we look forward to returning next time we visit Wellington. The staff are very friendly and the decor is so authentic you could easily imagine being transported to an eatery in Venice.
M.
Wonderful selection of traditional Italian dishes to share. Our party loved it all. Could not recommend highly enough
J.
Not really my cup of tea cuisine but was a good price. ($99 for a starter, 2 meals and 4 drinks) staff were great though.
C.
Wonderful service and excellent tapas.
Ombra has a wide variety of tapas dishes which are full of flavour, best for dinner with 3 or more so you get to try more dishes. Staff are knowlegable and will help cater to or advise on dietary requirements too!
j.
Really enjoyable experience! The service, excellent! 👍
M.
What a delightful surprise. We ended up having lunch at Ombra today as the restaurant/cafe we had intended to go to was closed on Monday's. I had the Zucchini Risotto and the "All Blacks" dessert. These dishes were outstanding. They were exceptionally well balanced, fresh and unique in both texture and taste. The capocuoco knows what he is doing. So happy to have discovered this place. The staff were wonderful and the place has a very relaxed casual atmosphere.
A.
Do yourself a favour. Just go. I didnt take any photos. But I'll always remember the flavours. It's why I keep going back. Get the pizza. Get the lamb. Get an addiction you cant shake.
J.
Ombra has rich, delicious food. The price is along the mid to higher range depending on what you order. and the quality is excellent. It had great service so if you're looking to settle in and catch up over dinner, it's a great place to go.
I.
Ombra was delicious. My partner has a strong Italian background and we can both give A++ to the food. We had a risotto, meat balls and a desert, all to share . Really enjoyed it
E.
The bavette is divine, very well executed, the radicchio jam coming with it is extremely tasty and goes perfectly with the meat. At the beginning I was confused about the absence of a decent side coming with bavette but when it came (with jam and rocket salad) I understood and, thanks God, it is an E X C E L L E N T combination. It is also more than enough for one person and the price is not even that high. Clap Clap !
N.
Magnificent authentic Italian food, straight from Venice. Has an unique ambience that actually transforms you to an eclectic diner you would only see in European film. Very good pricing as well. Wine was beautiful. A must visit if you are in Wellington for dinner!
B.
A very pleasant experience when I visited with my Grandson in late March. The Maitre was particularly helpful and got us a table quickly. We had an exquisite meal with appropriately recommended wines. Would love to return someday.
M.
Smaller than I thought.
A very warm, inviting, and comfortable place. The food is small plates and best to have two each (the wait staff will let you know if they think you've gone too much, and you can always order more as you go).
My pick, the brussel sprouts, devine! I know right, weird but it is a stunning dish
Definitely book ahead!
P.
This was a lovely restaurant and would gladly eat there again.
The quality was very high and I would recommend the venison meat balls and either the chocolate salami or gorgonzola gelato.
The service was good and the floor manager excellent.
We arrived as a walk-in booking at about 6:40, ordered an appetizer and drinks while seated at the bar waiting for a table. We received one in about 30 mins.
The food was well worth the wait and I think you would be paying $10-$15Aus more per plate in Australia.
I will definitely be eating there again if I return to Wellington.
Loved it!!!!
C.
Wonderful food, great ambiance and attentive staff. What more could you want. The pumpkin risotto was out of this world amazing! Definitely a place to go.
J.
If I die while eating the Gnocchi pasta, steak and pizza from this place, i will die a happy person.
The only issue I have with this place is the drink selection, its rather shallow and the cocktails are very expensive at $18-20 - avoid them if you do go here.
Otherwise it is really great food.
A.
The food was delicious and the maitre'd was very clear on what was suitable for Coeliacs and what wasn't. The wine was also lovely, and overall, I can't wait to go back. Definitely try to get in early though - they can have a big wait in busy times, but I can see why. It's worth it!
J.
Delicious food. The small meals came out at a semi regular time which meant you could eat at your own pace with nothing getting too cold. Tips for visiting: 8 plates are more than enough to feed 4 people unless you are big eaters. Mushrooms come in a very big portion, only order this if you really like them. Avoid the Ombra house sausages, just something missing with their taste.
D.
Absolutely wonderful. Everything we ordered was amazing. Highly recommend!
Beautiful restaurant, great staff, amazing food, and all around great atmosphere.
L.
Great decor and atmosphere. We had the pizza and Panna cotta which were both wonderful. Service and coffee was outstanding. Highly recommend.
S.
Good restaurants! The dishes aren't small like you think. Take 2 for two people, and if you need more so order later. Don't miss the chocolate volcano!! Amazing!!!
D.
Love Ombra. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the range of different and interesting plates on the menu - the flavours seem to be very well thought through. The plates are on the smaller side but well priced to make it affordable for most.
F.
Had a super great time at the establishment. Great service by the staff and most importantly, as other have said, excellent food. We all enjoyed sharing our Italian inspired tapas.
Highly recommend the place.
L.
Enjoyed our dinner at the bar, particularly due to the excellent service! Got the panzanella salad ( deliciously acidic and a good portion), coppa/rocket pizette (light and yum crust!), duck risotto (a bit heavy/creamy for us), and the broccoli which was probably my favorite- cooked perfectly with a great sauce/lemon to set it off.
M.
WOW … this food is absolutely amazing
B.
Taste is so subjective yeah? I keep going back waiting to be disappointed. Hasn't happened yet. My number one in Cuba Street. Good food, good bar, good atmosphere. Goodonya
J.
Gnocchi is a must, same with the meat balls
Aswell as the pizzas
A little hidden drink I like to order is the:
San Pellegrino Aranciata Rosa
(Sparkling blood orange)
P.
Tasty, delicious food, nice atmosphere...sometimes could be full so need to call in advance.🍕
C.
Great food, but the service was extremely, extremely slow. The table next to us complained and were given complimentary risotto for the wait (like any good restaurant would!). We didn't complain, however when our last meatball dish came out and we were asked if we would like to make it 4 meatballs as there are two of you (even though the whole concept of the restaurant is sharing) we thought how nice, what a lovely gesture as we've had to wait SO long! We were then charged $5 for the extra meatball. It sounds petty, it's only $5, but it's the principle. A gesture of good will would have been really appreciated, rather than up-selling for extras & trying to squeeze every last cent out of us! Such a shame.
C.
Pretty memorable breakfast experience with a great service. The menu is vivid and the service was quick. The food is quite good and coffee was much better. Highly recommended for a good meal and a goid hangout spot. The ambiance is quite memorable.
N.
Great vibe and friendly service. The coffee was perfect. My 3 year old wanted fries so ordered the polenta fries and he was not impressed (and me too). The vegetable dishes and the pizzatte was delicious. Bon Appetit
L.
YOUR SEARCH IS OVER, YOU SHOULD EAT HERE! - I wish I had photos of this lovely meal, but I ate too fast. DELICIOUS food, good service and the spritz is amazing. Will definitely come back when in Wellington.
D.
Amazing food. Very friendly and helpful staff. Book in advanced as it's a very popular place. Highly recommend.
A.
The Zomato reviews forced me to try this place out, I have to agree with them. The food was excellent, the cocktail section is not up to the mark, not at this price but the food pretty-much adds to a wonderful experience and why you would want to go back.
K.
Great food . Service less than average. Didn't appreciate TWICE being told we had to be out by 8.30. And I felt like I was drinking my wine out of a thimble the glass as so small. Food was excellent though so it made up for it.
G.
Wow! We had a bottle of wine and shared various tapas. Every plate was delicious. It was nice to sip wine and saunter through the meal. We did not feel rushed. Loved the eggplant parmesan.
W.
Loved it! The menu is delicious, food tasted great.
Definitely recommend and will be eating there again soon.
A.
went here on a friends recommendation for a pre-show wedding anniversary dinner. The food was lovely, filling (we thought we'd need to order more starters/mains, but by the time we'd finished them we thought we'd only be able to fit dessert) and the staff were great.
Definitely somewhere we plan to go again.
J.
This is one of the Italian restaurants located at the Cuba Street. We tried the pizza and ordered two glasses of Italian wines. Everything was okay, but rather disappointed with the pizza. It is not a traditional Italian pizza, but a pizette (small pizza). All dishes offered by the restaurant are delivered in small portions and are meant for sharing. Quite unique if you like to try as many dishes as possible and the quantity is not important for you. As for the pizette, there is too much tomato sauce on the pizette although the taste is okay.
R.
Great food, efficient and friendly service.
G.
I'm not usually a huge fan of tapas style menus, but Ombra has gone a long way towards converting me. All the dishes are an excellent size and the menu offers a large enough selection to satisfy any tastes. I was really hard trying to find a dish that didn't appear tempting. Seven dishes selected (between two diners) on this trip and will definitely be back again to keep exploring the other options.
Winners were the Arancino. the Goat's cheese Crostino, and Venison meatballs and the Pork Belly (though the latter was very rich).
Excellent attentive but casual service through out.
P.
Excellent selection of small plates for sharing, i.e., an Italian "tapas". The food is served as it is made, so some dishes take longer than others. Good quality food. Good service. Will definitely go back.
B.
Great place for great food. The staff are some of the best in Wellington. Super nice and friendly. The polenta chips are the absolute best I've ever had
P.
A real authentic Italian experience. Really good food, great service, a nice selection of Italian wines and drinks, all reasonably priced. Highly recommend.
t.
Delicious food, every morsel was enjoyable ! Prompt friendly attentive service and a lovely warm relaxed ambience, I definitely recommend Ombra and shall return asap 😄👌🏼
J.
What can I say, awesome waitress Liliana, she rocks. Chefs did amazing tasty food. No I’m not staff or the owner. We came in late and they looked after us like family. Thank you.
G.
Amazing place, and great food. Just don’t sit next to the door when it’s blowing in from the south, north, east or west or be ready to use your “are you born in a tent” line. Amazing food and vibe, did I mention the food and how good it is?
C.
Yes! Ombra went through a bit of a lull in food and service quality. But dinner here last night was great. Almost back to the crazy high standard they set when they first opened. I'm so happy to have it back.
M.
Excellent food! Go early (happy hour), or make a reservation for a specific time. Bu 6 pm, the tables were full. Service is great and food is so delicious.
L.
Lovely place for lunch, staff very helpful but unobtrusive. Food delicious
J.
We had a great waiter, but that was the highlight of the place.
The food was mostly just ok; not sure if it was worth the price. Knowing that we're a party of five, they only offered to make 1 portion bigger (not unreasonably, but more than 66% more expensive) for all of us to share it.
If you want tapas-style done *right*, the golden standard is still 'The Fork' in Cape Town.
R.
Some amazing Italian food (with some interesting twists here and there) can be found here. We had possibly the best risotto we've ever had here. The wait staff are great too.
J.
Outstanding food, service and atmosphere. A real gem for Wellington.
Will NEVER forget my overall experience. ❤️
T.
Delicious food, great service. Tapas style - best shared among several people. The four of us didn't get a dish we didn't enjoy. Recommended!
P.
A gem in downtown Wellington. The dishes you order arrive as they are made & sharing is the order of the day. Happy hour early evening means it's worth dining early to save a few $
J.
A couple of long-ago poor experiences have truly been undone with Ombra's recent performances. Sharing plates are difficult only for the sake of deciding who gets the extra mouthful of delicious.
The restaurant is cozy by virtue of small tables and a packed venue - great for cultivating brilliant ambiance.
Excellent Italian-influenced wine list that's an education in itself. Aperitifs are Ombra's strong point.
Go here for an electric dining experience and enjoy as many sharing plates as possible.
R.
We were looking for the action of the Night Markets but they have ceased then we came across Ombra!! Hip Italian restaurant - tasty and well presented Guanciale crostino and Asparagus crostino to start then whole sardines and Gorgonzola Dolce. Jules Taylor wine to accompany. A highlight of Cuba Street!
J.
Amazing food. Really delicious. I’d recommend the Brussels, risotto (duck), wild venison meatballs and the bavette steak.
G.
The place has a nice vibe and very friendly service with an Italian accent. The Garage beer is pretty good and so are the little dishes. The pizzeta is Okay-ish, better off getting something else
J.
First time I have been here for food, rather than just drinks. The food was IMPECCABLE. Didn't even realise this place was Italian, but the quality of food was off the charts. I loved it and cannot wait to return. 5 Stars!!!
L.
Our friend has been raving about Ombra for a while now but a week ago was our first visit. The waiter asked everyone who came in if they've been to Ombra before. He would then tell them the meaning of Ombra in Italian and explain how the food is intended for sharing. Interestingly enough, he would ask my husband a question but didn't stick around long enough to hear my husband's answer. He did this everytime he'd come to our table. He was pleasant enough but I found his behavior rude.
Although we enjoyed our food, my husband's Whittaker's chocolate volcano for dessert was a let down because the volcano already erupted (so to speak) on the side when my husband got it. Overall experience was good.
J.
Super tasty food, mid to upper price range for shared plates. Good atmosphere and if you sit up at the counter you get a free chef show.
E.
We arrived here by accident (... hungry, 3pm). All we tried was very good. Simple Italien kitchen but with good ingredients.
22/10/2018 ... again in this place ... The menu was changed but it was so delicious that I’ve forgotten to take pictures with the food 😂 ... Next time I’ll take a lot of pictures, promise !
I recommend: Baccala crostino ❤️ (9 nz$), Duck Liver Pate (7 nz$), Venison ❤️ (14 nz$), Lamb (14 nz$) - for 2 people!!!
D.
Great food choices and service.
M.
Great Chef who's got an interesting take on some international dishes. The squid risoto was excellent as was the gnocchi. Only 4 stars though as the booze is very pricey.
L.
I've been to Ombra so many times - it's one of my favourite places in Wellington. Delicious small plates, good service & great atmosphere. I keep going back and back.
H.
Good food good service good drinks. Small plates designed to share. Pizza for one also good. Reservations available for groups over eight people.
M.
Lovely, went in on a whim with a colleague and asked for the server’s pick in terms of food and drinks; we were not disappointed. Great flavours, lovely whine, and proper service. Strongly recommend.
R.
Hands down this is my favourite place to eat with friends! Some of the best food and wine you will ever have in Wellington based on a tapas menu. Can’t wait to come back.
F.
We arrived without a reservation but were quickly found a table for 5 in this busy restaurant. Service was second to none, as was the food. A very enjoyable experience.
M.
Great food, and good atmosphere. Generally good service, but have had some servers get a bit short, so not sure what was going on there.
J.
Absolutely lush food. I've never had italian food in such a 'tapas' style before but it worked well with our group of 5, giving everyone the chance to try lots of dishes.
V.
Stylish, very friendly staff, great food
h.
Friendly staff, tasty food, quick service. Some of the portions could have been a little bigger for the cost but overall it was nice!
E.
Beautiful food and great service
H.
Great service, tapas and the main dish was great, full of flavour and we had a really nice time. The staff were really friendly, and the food and service was great, thanks.
J.
We went early to avoid waiting for a table. A couple of the hot dishes were luke warm. Venison risotto was average. Best dish was squid ink gnocchi.
M.
As an Italian, I avoid Italian restaurants abroad but this one did not disappointed me at all. Everything was delicious and the prices are fair.
Loved the caponata!
E.
Italian style restaurant with quite good service
T.
Was out on a girls night out here..amazing food, out of the world desserts!one of the best in wellington!
H.
Taste is good. But small amount of food. So, you have to order two for male. 12 dollars meat ball has three 3 cm meat balls.
Not recommend for hungry people.
J.
Really loved the food. Great wait staff! Lovely atmosphere. So preoccupied that I only captured dessert. Thanks!
A.
The service was friendly, the food was excellent & the vibes (including my company) was great. Would go again & so should you 🙂
E.
Really knowledgeable and friendly staff, always able to easily adapt something depending on allergies and they make the best aperol spritz in Wellington hands down. Love them!
I.
Great staff who always help out especially when the restaurant is quite busy delicious menu with many variations on great classic food good drinks menu and close to all the events you're probably having dinner before
n.
Very good authentic italian cuisine, excellent service. Recommended.
M.
Alex our server was excellent. Baccala Mantecato Crostino (Cod dish) was amazing highly recommend, if your in Wellington it's a must
M.
Great service and a good vibe. Food was top quality. Essentially tapas style with Italian cuisine. The Negroni was on point!
M.
Great food in a great location. Service was excellent. The gnocchi was delicious and my favourite but everything on the sharing menu is delicious.
B.
Service is great, but the food is even better
R.
Superb food and wine. Liked the little corner we sat in too. Great night

Wellington on a plate vegetarian burger was delicious. Accompanied by delicious light and crisp polenta chips.
W.
What an awesome dining experience! The duck fat risotto is the best I've ever had! The staff is amazing and fun.
Á.
Consistently excellent food and service. It's the first place I try for dinner whenever I'm in Wellington.
S.
Fantastic place, great for dates or small groups/family.
Pricey but more than worth it!
J.
Suggest you don't walk past this place; it's awesome. Could spend all evening there but I guess we need to share it with many others who also want a turn.
J.
Fantastic all round meal experience. Great staff, awesome variety of food. Don't miss the chocolate volcano for dessert.
S.
Great place, service is top and my veggie food was super tasty. Bit on the pricey side but real nice place.
D.
Great restaurant in Wellington. Very tasty meatballs! It's a tapas-style menu, so order a few dishes to share with friends.
D.
Awesome food and staff. The sour cherry wine is to die for.
A.
Absolutely amazing. Food was beautiful and staff were great 😊
K.
Had some drinks and share plates between 2, the gnocchi (pictured), beef meatballs and polenta chips were more than enough and super tasty.
E.
Top shelf. Shame there is no high chair for kids (a recurrent problem: do children not eat in Wellington CBD?).
K.
Good food, dessert and coffee, staffs are friendly
j.
Food was great as usual but the service was lacking. Had to work hard to get attention just to get a second drink. Halve the order was missed or messed up.
T.
“Umbra” was superb...food delicious, ambience perfect, staff excellent. So pleased we had the experience. We highly recommend eating at “Umbra.”
S.

The food is delicious and price is reasonable. Will visit again :)

Excellent fresh and tasty food, reasonable prices and great service. The chef even heated up our baby food in her saucepan as they don't have a microwave!

J.
Busy informal Italian. Menu full of plates to share and enough choice for vegetarians
J.
Outstanding. The smoky goodness in the beef meatballs. The market fish was perfectly pan seared and crispy. Cheers!
L.
Possibly one of Wellingtons best restaurants, great staff, great food, great atmosphere, casual dining at its best, ideal for couples or small groups, bigger groups can get a bit frustrating, gets its fifth star for keeping the favourites on the menu but jazzing it up with some pretty delicious specials.
M.
Good food, nice idea with the sharing menu. Great service, great atmosphere.
c.
Just dined there again. Always amazing food and service. Ombra is the best. 👌
K.
So delicious! We had 7 sharing plates between 4 for dinner and it was plenty, would highly recommend.
A.
A warm, hearty Italian restaurant down in Cuba Street in Wellington, New Zealand. All the foods, not just the pizzas, are delicious.

Good italian unconventional food. But usually crowded regardless of the reservation. Prices are reasonable.

This restaurant offers excellent Italian food in a perfect Venetian atmosphere! I'm Italian, very picky about Italian food abroad, and I must say that this is one of the best restaurants where I have ever eaten!
M.
Delicious food. Great service both at the bar and table. Do book though! Very busy place
B.
This is OK....Italian which does not pack a lot of flavour, small sharing plates. High prices and service is slow. Not impressed.
C.
Frankly fantastic food... Different, yummy, memorable. Ombra is a most excellent reason to visit Wellington!
L.
Naturally welcoming staff, fantastic recommendations (the espresso martinis especially!) exciting menu with good sized portions to try a variety!
