Reviews of Shepherd
J.
Have been here a few times and always enjoy the creative and surprising dishes on offer (re fish wings!). This is the first time since they renovated and really enjoyed their Asian inspired menu. Great service and atmosphere, the only slight let down was the dessert selection, but that was only a personal taste issue. 4.5 stars.
D.
Service lacked a little, we didn't get our wine until just after the first starter arrived.
Kumura was more al dente, not sure if that was how it was supposed to be but seemed undercooked to my tasting. venison had 4 slices, thought it might be been better as a tartare. Decent wine list. Fijoa granita, fish and Jerusalem artichoke custard were stand outs, recommended - cant go wrong there.
S.
Really cool spot, really good food. Interesting and well executed. Cocktails were well executed and thoroughly enjoyed by our group.
B.
The food is absolutely amazing. It's so amazing that the menu doesn't even begin to describe the experience.
Oh, and the service is great too.
P.
We dined here for 36th wedding anniversary as it was recommended by another chef. It was great. Shepherd has a fun vibe with funky surroundings and a great buzz going on. Joseph, our waiter, although new, was very friendly and looked after us extremely well.
The meal was da bomb! The smoked fish starter just melted apart, full of flavour and a good portion size too. The Hapuka wing, fantastic. Crunchy coating, also full of flavour and hiding copious quantities of meat underneath. Would have it again at the drop of a hat, or fishing line as the case may be. The short rib beautifully flavored, unfortunately not quite warm through but we could of said so and it would of been topped up no worries. The Black Estate Chardonnay was just perfect with the fish too.
Will definitely go back again. You should try it!
E.
The food is delicious, the atmosphere is nice and welcoming, the service has been always perfect. So yes, this restaurant is one of our options here in Wellington for many years.
A.
Lovely meals. Friendly accommodating staff. Only negative was that we went there for brunch and they don't do any coffees aside from filter coffee. Just something to be aware of, so if you're dying for a flat white or mocha, grab one on your way there.
M.
Went here as highly recommended by a work colleague ... wow .. amazing food, the venison was incredible and the ambience was fantastic....our waitress was the bomb I just wish I'd got her name as I would have loved to personalize how great she was on here but she made the dining experience even better ... thank you shepherd we will be back 🤗
S.
Friend recommended coming here last Thursday, lucky he did, what a great experience. Sat in front of the kitchen so we could watch our food being prepared. Ordered osyters, tomato salad, fried chicken, korean fried rice, beef shin and a couple of deserts. I must say, the fried chicken was definitely the stand out dish with the fried rice coming in 2nd. Chicken was juicy, tender and super crunchy but not oily at all! Too bad it was a special for the night and not on the main menu. Staff are awesome too, they were willing to chat while preping the food, headchef even came to have a bit of a chat with too. Booked a 2nd night for dinner on the spot, but unfortunately couldn't make it. Will definitely be going back.
R.
We came for the Braw X Shepherd collab and we were stoked to have caught it. The asparagus was top notch as well as the grilled cheese (with an egg and mushroom xo sauce 🤤). Would also highly recommend trying the pickle beer!
T.
Would highly recommend. Attentive service. Tasty cocktails, a good range of classics plus some I guess originals. Really good wine selection.
We had a late dinner and really enjoyed the the duck breast and the 16hr beef short rib. The short rib was tender, tasty and well complimented by the garnish.
S.
There are times when you get seated at the high chair area and it almost sounds like a demotion.
Being seated at the chefs area in Shepherd is far from a demotion.
We were treated to access to the chefs who were responding to our queries on the menu and helped us sample the item of interest.
We ordered that very item and followed up with the special of steak which had a topping of raw vegetables and using the heat of the steak heating the vegetables underneath.
You get that great change for your taste buds that I didn't think I'd like but enjoyed it as one of those times where you "try it before you knock it"
The asparagus with citrus is a knock out!
Great attention from the staff and chefs made for a fantastic memory of Halloween.
Oh and congratulations on the award team!
O.
The food was incredible with amazing service to match. Had delicious oysters to start followed by three courses paired with excellent drinks recommended by the waiter. The vibe was fun and casual with all the staff delivering great service. Some restaurants at this price point can feel pretentious and overbearing but dining at Shepherd felt like visiting a friend’s house. Would recommend for an excellent dining experience.
A.
Hands down one of the best dinners we have ever had. Sat at the kitchen bar and wow what an experience. All staff were lovely and attentive. The chef's are extremely talented and humble and was great to chat one on one. The venison i will rave about forever. Beautiful from start to finish. Thank you so much Shepherd staff.
H.
Lively atmosphere and lovely food. Venison tataki was delicious, beef brisket very melt in your mouth and a generous serving. Didn’t enjoy the oyster smothered with creamy dressing, couldn’t really taste the oyster.
T.
Unforgettable cuisine experience! It's a must do!
We had dinner at Shepherd for the first time last Wednesday.
From the moment we walked in (no prior booking) to the moment we walked out it was 10/10 on all counts.
Superb front of house service, superb wine/cocktail list, superb food and superb Chefs. You're getting the theme by now? Yes it was superb!
The only seats available to us were up at the pass so we could see the Chefs close at hand and we also got the opportunity to interact with them - asking questions about ingredients and all manner of foodie related questions. The guys were great to talk to even though they were busy at the time.
Chelsea and her front of house team and the Chefs were fantastic.
Thanks Shepherd, Chelsea and all the team for creating a great experience and memory for us.
We will be back!
Cheers
Tom and Jill
D.
Delicious. Interesting wine list, lots of non kiwi options. Accommodating, even though I didn't have reservations, That always wins points in my book.
C.
Food is delicious, fresh and well prepared. Atmosphere is a bit pretentious, music too loud and the decor is garish. Service is good but the staff are a mixed bunch. I'd definitely go again though, just to eat something delicious again.
p.
Creative and enjoyable fine dining experience in cozy unassuming restaurant. Best experienced sitting at the counter to see the chefs at work.
Had grouper fish, pork scotch and horchata panna cotta. All excellent.
A.
Absolutely loved it. From the chilled out, funky vibe, knowledgeable and attentive service, and delicious food and wine. Surprisingly empty for a Thursday night. Covid passports required.
k.
beautifully laid out dining area, plenty of choices on the menu, all superbly cooked and well presented, I definitely recommend this place if your in wellington
S.
Very nice restaurant hidden away in alleyway. Had the sous vide fish which was absolutely delightful. Portions were a little small but big enough so you don't walk away hungry. Dessert highlight was the doughnut cardamon. Reservation needed and AMEX not accepted.
J.
Don't let the Goldings style maximalist interior design taste deter you, Shepherd is a fantastic dining experience. The food indicates far better curatorial style than the green/orange/red/pink decor. Excellent for gluten free, sugar free or vegan dietary needs....one waitress will even walk you through exactly what is good for you and what can be modified. Strong and regularly updated wine list oversees a large menu guaranteed to have options for everyone. Savoury pikelets are bite-sized entree deliciousness. The rillette is filling, all the fish options are bound to please - even the eel! Go for a superb experience of good food, great service, and be sure to finish on the rye donut for pudding.
R.
What an excellent experiences. Quite unusual flavour combinations and potentially expensive, well worth a visit.
P.
Great service, appetizer and snack were really food, desert was awesome.
Main dish was a little bit disappointed (sour pork)
T.
Lovely setting, beautiful and delicious food, great staff. Can't wait to return! (Have returned several times since and continues to live up to expectations!)
B.
Been here several times. Always a great experience. Great food and drinks. Had a lovely waitress last time I was there, she was very patient with one of our little diners (going to restaurants was a new experience). Took the time to explain the menu and what everything was. Highly recommend.
M.
really unique and enjoyable experience. had a dinner with my friends there and enjoyed all the food they served us.
m.
Amazing food. Pretty sweet set up too, as long as you don't mind the lack daylight in some parts of the building...
G.
This has always been high on my list of must visit restaurants in Wellington. The food is exceptional try the savory custards they put on, you won't be disappointed.
The wine/cocktail selection has a great mix of classics and some more innovative options to suit everyone.
Lastly, sitting up at the bar is loads of fun, you can see everything in the kitchen which is well worth the experience.
I love it here, can't wait to go back!
S.
Great little restaurant and bar tucked into a laneway. Friendly people and to be completely honest, the level of knowledge the staff have about what's being served, where the ingredients come from and the ability to recommend portion size and number of dishes was pretty impressive.
We had the duck and pumpkin entrees, then the fish and beef mains. Everything is shareable and with a couple of nice wines (a zin from california and a pinot from otago), it was a great dinner.
There's a page of beers as well, some local and some remote, and the barman was quick to make a recommendation based on what we'd usually drink and how adventurous we were feeling.
Tables are good for 6, there are plenty of 'at the bar' or 'overlooking the kitchen' seating and it's not too noisy or cold. Great spot.
j.
Amazing experience! Walked in off the street feeling hungry and wondering where to go, the guys were very inviting and placed us at a table immediately. There was only 1 other couple there when we arrived but when we left it was packed and I can see why, the food was phenomenal and right up our alley, the atmosphere and wine recommendations were top notch. But the food 🤤 ill be bragging about this hidden gem for years to come.
Will definitely be back for sure!
B.
First time diner - great food and service - the bottomless filter coffee was a nice touch too.
E.
Cool atmosphere, good drinks menu, but the food wasn't as described. For example, ordered a tofu dish that didn't have any tofu in it!
H.
Food and service both 5 star. Very informative wait staff time is obviously spent ensuring they know and understand the food and drink offerings. The celeriac with green curry was fantastic (it was all bloody good). Will be back again!
T.
Great food. Love their ambience and excellent customer service. Definitely will visit again
A.
We had dinner here on a Friday evening. We didn't have a booking, but we're able to sit at the high tables which surround the kitchen. The service was good, but the food was superb, watching each meal being prepared was pretty good, there's no fanfare, just good ole skills and care. The menu is essentially four starters, four entrees, four mains and four desserts which are simply described, and reasonably priced. Each of the meals, including the desserts, were very good, lots of good flavours and well presented.
J.
Went there for Burger Wellington. Their. Seafood burger was simple but amazing! And the fries were yum also.
My partner and I shared donuts with orange cream and fennel (and other good stuff I can't remember 😂). It was quite light, not too sweet (it had a good amount of bitter caramel flavour), felt sophisticated. It was also delicious. Would recommend - we weren't even sure we'd be fans of the fennel, but it worked 👍
C.
Came here for Valentine's Day dinner. Service was excellent, but in my opinion most of the food was lacking in flavour (the blue warehou being the exception). Portion sizes were extremely small for the price, and neither the server or kitchen staff knew if the granola in the chocolate mousse dessert had gluten or not. Probably won't be coming back.
N.
Initially disappointed to be sat at the high bench it actually made for a really entertaining place to sit. Lovely food, great waiting staff. Very knowledgeable about their food and its origins. Will definately go again.
R.
Amazing flavors, beautifully presented, and a menu that is unique and surprising. Walked out fulfilled and talking about each dish we shared. Shepherd definitely deserves its reputation.
t.
lots of experimental stuff and it tastes great. superb service
A.
Just great! Absolutely fantastic food, great cocktails and lovely staff. We'll be back here
D.
A fantastic dining experience. There honestly wasn't a thing I tried that I didn't like. They even managed to make kale delicious!
L.
Innovative menu, delicious food - I especially enjoyed the pillowy steamed milk pikelets. Great ambience!
E.
Absolutely fantastic experience, delicious food, attentive service - loved the flavour combinations, advise from the waiters was spot on too. Can't wait to go back.
G.
First time dining with Shepherd, Friday night last week. Chelsea was an excellent maître d, and the food was fantastic. We both ordered specials that were presented on the night but had oysters and the venison entree as well which were amazing. Will definitely be coming back again soon.

Lovely food, great service from a friendly and helpful waitress
A.
Best fine dining restaurant in Wellington food and service amazing will always recommend to all awesome
J.
We tried Shepherd for the first time recently and would highly recommend it. We found the food to be really flavoursome and the dishes to be quite inventive. The service was great and the restaurant has a nice vibe. We will definitely be visiting again.
M.
A beautiful meal, with attentive and friendly wait staff. The food was classy with some exquisite extras added to perfection. Congratulations to everyone, including the chefs. Our whole experience was a treat. MOST highly recommended.
K.
Out for dinner at Shepherds in Eva Street Awesome service and staff . Very welcoming. As for the food, totally out of this world delicious. Matching wines with eachcourse .We cleared all our plates.
To all my friends, spoil yourselves and book for dinner. .I personally recommend the oysters done three ways. The moki with skin on absolutely devine. The short rib beef was delicious. Zucchini and apple sides mmmmm.
A big thank you to the staff and Shepherd for a wonderful anniversary dinner
Thank you so much Lawrenique, Doug and Karlie for the beautiful anniversary present, we finally got to use it
Mmmmmmmm time for desert
R.
My birthday so we went to Shepherd for dinner. OMG Shepherd us a seriously a master of flavors. He is a chef with a seriously great deal of skill. Exquisite is probably the only word to describe it. I don't know which dish I'd recommend most , we actually ate over half of the menu between 4 of us. If I'd have to pick the best of the best, and all dishes were amazing, I'd say the venison stood out. What a stunner. The wait staff were attentive and very polished. A faultless and memorable experience. Make sure Shepherd is on your list of must visits.
n.
Beautifully presented & tasty meals
S.
Almost a religious experience for a good food lover. Sadly in only took a few food pictures. Fizzing to get back here!
M.
We had a fantastic meal with great service. Love the location! Had no idea these bars and restaurants existed in Eva Street. And love the concept - we sat at a table by the window, but next time I'd like to sit at the bar and watch the open kitchen. The beef short ribs were to die for, as was the cauliflower entree. Highly recommend!
K.
Dining at Shepherd sounds great online, but in reality is not I would recommend. If you're looking for interesting new dishes that are well executed- then this is not the place to find them. Many reviewers will point to the small portions and high prices as a problem. They're all correct. Sometimes you're ok with small plates if the quality of the ingredients and the food stands out. At Shepherd however, this is not the case.
The food falls flat and the execution does not carry through the prices. The only thing worthy of the high prices here are the cocktails. They're very good. You will drink many of them here because the service is so slow you will have no food and nothing else to do. The only highlight of Shpeherd to be frank are the drinks. Come for a couple and then maybe eat an appetizer or two and realize that dinner is best found somewhere else.
P.
Great and friendly staff.
Can highly recommend the venison entree
C.
A lot of care and attention to every detail of your plate...really excellent food overall. Highly recommended to sit at the open kitchen bar seating and strike up a conversation with the chefs who are all a delight. Shepherd himself works in the kitchen and he’s very kind and personable.
R.
Ridiculous!!! You are going to have to make the most of availability as this place is going to fly!!! I don’t eat Kina as a norm but I am converted. Super super food and exceptional service. Try and eat at the kitchen table.
T.
Excellent food originally served excellent service
M.
Food to make you smile. Called in by chance whilst waiting for a flight. This place is a gem!!! If you can, get a seat at the chef's counter. A small menu - always a good sign. The team pull out some extraordinary flavour combinations. A great wine and beer list to accompany the food. Table staff knowledgeable about meals and what beer / wine compliment each other. If you're planning on being in Wellington on Monday or Tuesday, change the dates - they're closed and it would be a shame to miss out
L.
New experience and excellent service. Staff were super friendly...
J.
Tasty restaurant with a wide variety of food choices and styles. Their filter coffee is bottomless (and great quality) so feel free to get caffeinated to the nines. Staff are friendly and laid back so probably aren't taking full advantage of the bottomless coffee policy.
J.
Service staff very attentive, just a few things to improve on...claims were tuatua's which are much bigger and not as sweet...a finger bowl would have been appreciated. Both mains were very salty, however the food was delicious. Would go back for sure.
M.
What a delightful place! Pricey, but extremely good - to rival any of Wellington’s best restaurants. The lighting is so interesting, the wine list is full of so many weird and delightful things, the staff are so friendly and helpful, and they are so good at parsnips. Extremely good place to go for a date or social event!
T.
Great service, very busy and way too noisy for me but the food was very interesting and experimental. Clearly some great imagination and techniques in the kitchen. Unfortunately they only do filter coffee.
D.
What a great little place. Really tasty food and a great wine list. Highly recommend the sharing plates or the bowls. The fried rice is delicious. Try the goats cheese for desert but make sure you have it with some desert wine. The beignets are amazing too. Will definitely go back.
A.
We had a really excellent meal here whilst on holiday. The food was superb (the chef's specials were a great choice), service was attentive, and drinks were good. As a treat it was reasonably priced too. Highly recommended!
R.
Lovely atmosphere, Mum took me, my sister her partner out for a joint siblings birthday celebration. We ordered several starters and sides along with a main and desert each. The portions were tiny with the pricey mains looking more like starters! I was still starving even after eating half of my Mum's fried rice along with my main of fish. Would've expected more given it ended up being a $73/head meal.
Mum expressed this disappointment to the staff who weren't that concerned and only offered to take off one of the deserts as compensation.
Won't be coming back again anytime soon. If you're going I'd recommend bringing a blank cheque and ordering two mains each and several sides if you don't want to go home hungry.
R.
Wonderful food and detailed service. If you love to watch food being prepared then ask for a barstool in front of the open kitchen. A delicious, sensory feast. Cool design of the space. A relaxed atmosphere.
R.
Always have excellent food and service here. One of our top 3 in Wellington with Ortega , Capitol for lunch and Shepherd.
I.
Very pleased with the original and local menu. The chef kindly offered me an succulent entrée while waiting for the main meal. You have to try their Monster mash, an original cocktail made out of local APA. Amazing experience!
J.
Service was fantastic. Our group enjoyed the pork, clams and oysters for mains and the beignets for dessert. Was just a bit pricey for the portion size and there was no espresso coffee which was disappointing
G.
Awesome food (and wine). So good to be presented with dishes completely different to typical restaurant fare. Trust the chef and select randomly. Everything is superb. Great service staff also.
B.
Nice oysters and drinks selection. Service in level 2 left a little to be desired. I'm sure they're great normally.
S.
Great food, excellent service
F.
Came here last night and we loved it. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the ribs. The waitress who served us was lovely
M.

O.
Fantastic service and delicious food, recommend the chef's table so you can see the magic happen ☺️
R.
All three courses as well as the service were superb. Wine selection isn't huge but the offerings are very good. I highly recommend this restaurant to any foodie visiting Wellington.
K.
Fantastic food and service! Like the creativeness of the menu.
P.
Food is good quality and service was great. But small portions and expensive.
M.
Amazing service and beautiful food!!
H.
Great place tucked away in central Wellington. The owner introduced his slow cooked beef brisket to our progressive dinner guests (LGNZ attendees 2019) ... it was melt in ypur mouth delicious.

S.

A.
Fantastic restaurant. Great staff. Superb food. Have always had fantastic experiences here. Highly recommended.
李.
Average burger this year, pretty soft chips, to be honest, soft chips wasn't my flavors. :(
C.
Don't go to this place because I will always want a seat at the bar, regardless that I live in Texas. Don't go and you'll regret it. The staff is passionate and knowledgeable, priceless in my world.
B.
Great food. Good service . Music too loud with peple shouting over it. Great experience sharing plates with good people.
A.
Try the pork fried rice and Kim Chi oysters. Always spot on. Great wine list too. Perfect for a night out with friends.
N.
Amazing food, tasty and beautiful. Careful and welcoming staff.
Probably one of the best restaurants in town.

Phenomenally good - food + wine + service + atmosphere = Wellington at its best
S.
Beef dishes must be avoided. Tasteless and tough as boots. Other dishes are great.
N.
Amazing flavours, great service and a relaxing location off the beaten track.
E.
Short haired waitress is a bit rude, food looks great but not really amusing for the flavour

Dinner for 6 on a Sunday night. .. from the amuse-bouche through the 6 courses on a set menu, Chef Shepherd surprised and delighted. Combinations that one would think un-workable were absolute magic - tastes, textures, presentation and quantities. Attentive to detail, discreet, knowledgeable wait staff too. Thanks Chef and Shepherd Crew.
