Reviews of Sweet Mother's Kitchen
S.
Went there for there for breakfast and dinner. For breakfast had the eggs bomba, breakfast burrito with SMK spicy sausage and a side of hash. It was delicious and would definitely order the dishes again. For dinner had the jambalaya, jerk chicken, fish tacos and pork belly tacos and curly fries. The jambalaya was delicious however would prefer dark chicken meat over chicken breast. The tacos were also good - crackling on the pork belly wasn't as crunchy as I like it but I am very picky when it comes to crackling. The jerk chicken was disappointing and would not order again - chicken breast was dry (again prefer dark meat) and the beans were basically tasteless. The dessert of banoffee pie and key lime pie was also quite good. Personally, I'm not a fan of banana flavoured caramel in the banoffee pie but overall it was still good.
C.
100% recommend. Best brunch in a long time, the staff was super nice even when they were slammed during the rush. The food was amazing, special shout-out to the pulled pork!

Sweet Mother’s Kitchen is something of an institution in Wellington, to the point where you wouldn’t be surprised to see Elijah Wood sampling a beignet or James Cameron enjoying a Po Boy. But it’s not a place I’ve visited with any regularity to judge the standard of the food. Following a leisurely wander around the Bay I decided to rest my feet and enjoy an off peak late brunch. Though the set Big Breakfast looked supremely appetizing I decided to pick a custom selection of breakfast items, including poached eggs, chili beef, potato hash and roast tomatoes. And boy, the portions almost made me regret my choices… there being far more on my plate than I was expecting. Generous homemade hash (a rarity these days), nicely spiced tomatoes and a good side portion of chili beef all hit the spot. And the flavours all complemented the hot sauce I chose to add to the eggs. Next time I’m definitely going to hit that Big Breakfast

Service was polite and friendly, if a little slow to start with. Food was excellent and prompt to arrive. Menu an interesting fusion: Mexican done in New Orleans style. Portion sizes were just right - satisfying but not wastefully large. I loved the spice of the hot wings balanced by fresh cooling celery and soothing creamy sauce. Prices are comfortable. Decor is interesting and cutely shabby-chic. Great music, not too loud. Would happily go again.

My new favourite restaurant in Wellington! The food is fantastic. Nice American flavours and good portion sizes. Service was great and although we had to wait a little while for a table, staff were still helpful and attentive. Even though it was a busy night, they didn’t try to rush us off our table. We ordered ribs and fish tacos and had pie for dessert. The food is well priced and delicious.
P.
Stopped here for breakfast on Xmas eve. The staff were very friendly and professional. The orders were taken quickly and the (delicious) food was delivered promptly. There were 5 adults dining, and all food came out at the same time and was very good. Great coffee. As an old WWF wrestling fan, I enjoyed the collectibles scattered around the place.
A.
A classic Wellington institution. I make a point of eating here any time I visit the capital. It's no fuss, casual and relaxed if somewhat hectic at times; and I'm here for it. The food is always great and the staff are honest and friendly.
I.
We got recommendation to try the waffle, unfortunately it is only available for breakfast and we went there at night. But we tried other dessert recommended by the staff and it was so delicious! The staff was also super accomodating and friendly. Well done guys!
d.
We went there to have brunch and they took exactly 1 hour to bring us a plate of eggs , we were getting very anxious , but the food is delicious , P.S: it's extremely expensive the order in the pics two plates of eggs cost us 35 dollars
F.
Our whole party ordered the nachos, 2x veggie and 2x beef. We all really enjoyed them, though did find it a bit light on cheese. Unfortunately there was a small amount of beef in one of the vegetarian dishes. It wasn’t a big deal for us, however I know it would be to some and I’d take care eating here if you were vegetarian or had an allergy.
On a better note our desserts were delicious and so were the Hurricane cocktails. Definitely recommend trying the pies.
M.
Food was very yummy. Waffles well done 👌🏻, very nice soft pulled pork and delicious fish, thick and creamy hollandaise sauce, beautiful eggs. I just felt quite uncomfortable among so many random, weird and ugly stuff chaoticly thrown around like, for example, a bloody cut foot on a wall, an arm on the ceiling, a mannequin head at the bar, a huge fluffy spider and etc. And the bathroom was also quite uncomfortably ugly, dark and a little dirty.
D.
As a first-timer at this venue, I am very happy. The team greeted me with smiles and accommodated me with a dietary requirement (allergy) and the food was amazing. I so enjoy caramel lattes and it was as good as I enjoy it. Well done guys. I will be back for more! 👍🏻
W.
A hip cafe with very customised interior deco. From various currency notes to random items and stuff on the wall, every inch is covered with something interesting. Waffles with fried chicken portion was perfect with tender chicken. The waffles could be slightly more crispy but was still great. My latte was also well done. Finally its a LGBT+ friendly cafe, pride flags everywhere.
N.
The atmosphere is cool and the decor and food reminds very much of New Orleans, they were just busy so service was slow.
A.
RCA Ribs - really good, soft, good amount of sauce, meat and flavour. Highly recommend asking for the fries on the side so they don’t get drenched in the BBQ sauce, so you can enjoy them with the side of aioli
H.
Love going here with friends, it's a classic. Really fun decor and nice seating for both day and night. Staff are always the best, very attentive. Menu can get a little monotonous but I blame that on myself going so often.
S.
SMK was recommended by a friend and we're grateful. Both the Cuban Po Boy and the Breakfast Burrito were fantastic. Great choice of food and drinks and excellent service. Would definitely come again next time we're in Wellington.
L.
food was nice both out side and inside seating
M.
One of my favourite places in Wellington. Casual environment, homey food and good prices.
I usually order Cajun fish, but they didn’t have any left, so we ordered chicken burrito and pork ribs.
The pork was unbelievable tasty, incredible; the burrito could have used a little more salt and overall seasoning. We had a peanut butter pie, was very good too.
T.
Great service, great staff and great food. Had made a group booking in advance and staff (especially their manager - John) were friendly, helpful and made sure to be clear with communication. Once arrived, everything went so smoothly and had quick service. Reasonably priced and great atmosphere. Thanks!
A.
Friendly staff and super flavorful food. Juicy burger and a glorious one-off turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. It's a bit tight inside and they don't have a highchair for kids so not the most family friendly (but they do welcome kids).
S.
Oh the ribs are fantastic. Yum. Service is great. Highly suggest you try this place. Couldn't be more happier
G.
Great service and good coffee. Only suggestion is hash browns could have more form(binding) rather than a pile of potato shavings :-) makes it hard to eat.
M.
Great food. Amazing atmosphere pecan bourbon pie, brownie and caramel slice.
T.
Service was guuuuuun, food BEEEST! Atmosphere and the place itself were quirky cool which rocked! Recommend everything we ate but the star dish had to have been the fish tacos! Thank you all for making our anniversary enjoyable
M.
Highly recommend!!!! Amazing staff and delicious food 😋
K.
Absolutely fantastic. The staff were beyond good. I can't wait to visit again.
M.
It was alright, food was pretty good, but portions kind of small. Breakfast burrito was good. Pasta not worth ordering. Lots of other guests eating the fried chicken, that looked good.
S.
So many good vegetarian & vegan options, a wide variety of American/Cajun inspired cuisine, and all at a reasonable price. The outdoor seating available is also a big plus on sunny days. Cool atmosphere overall.
P.
Eclectic and a mixture of cuisines. Thankfully! I got Flossy's Favorite which was a mixture for poached eggs, black beans, shrooms, and hash browns. Wow! The Heuvos Rancheros were excellent! The daughter had a waffle with pulled pork. All of it was excellent. The staff were just so friendly too!
p.
Great meal, reasonably priced. We managed to get half price drinks, before 6pm, happy hour. 😁
s.
This is a lovely American style cuisine in a colourful little cafe at the end of Courtney place. Definitely worth a visit. The staff are friendly and helpful but when this place is busy the food can sometimes take a little longer than expected. Excellent chicken on waffles!
P.
My favourite cafe to visit every time in Wellington. Always great coffee, food and service.. I'm never disappointed here. A must go to
M.
We went to this place because a friend recommended it and we weren't disappointed. The staff was nice, service okay and both coffee and food was delicious. Tends to get really crowded, but the atmosphere is cool.
T.
The food was spectacular with the RCA Ribs being one of the best ribs I've had..
The service [especially] was upper class and I was very impressed with one "Harry" and his pink professional eye brows.
K.
Worth the visit just for the desert pies. Food was tasty and good size portions.. The Wellington on a plate burger was really nice. The only real negative was being charged a surcharge on an already pricey meal for using a credit card.
M.
Because you deserve a sweet treat every now and again. Huge menu, mainly comfort food.
Laid back vibes, and good peeps, this is the kitchen you're after...
D.
This place can get really busy. I got in right when it opened so had no problem getting in. I Ordered the chicken and waffles and it was very nice. I really enjoyed that the waitress brought me extra syrup.
C.
Good sized portions of Great Food, a Great Atmosphere coupled with friendly efficient service; which explains why it was very busy on a Tuesday night. It may be some time, but we’ll be back..
A.
It was so crowded here even on weekdays. I tried some pasta with prawn and jambalaya? Things, but it wasn't really tasty. I might be try breakfast one more time.
S.
Staff is friendly, electic decor, good atmosphere, food price is good, ate there three times and managed to try different American pies, that is pretty close to the ones in the US. Banofee pie, pecan and bourbon pie.
C.
Excellent food and service. Huge portions and reasonable prices. The warm apple pie with icecream was delicious!
L.
Food is nice but have to wait for so long if you come here in a busy time
V.
Superb! A friend recommended to check this place out while visiting wellington and was not dissapointed. Such a great vibe, excellent music, wonderful staff and even better food. Big selection to suit everyone. Make your next meal here, they are also pet friendly so feel free to bring your furry friends along!
R.
Service was good, friendly and attentive. Reasonable beer selection. Chick in a basket was excellent - fried chicken, curly fries, bit of slaw. Can't go wrong, and they certainly didn't. Creamy spinach side was ok, and I was disappointed with the pecan & bourbon pie for dessert. It needed to be served hot, instead was cold, and didn't match to examples I've had in the past.
I must admit that I'll likely be back again to give it a second chance, though. I saw a salad go past that looked excellent, and the mushroom side dish on the table next to me looked appetising.
G.
Good food and staff. Menu is quite extensive. They're good at chasing the pigeons out too
T.
Love it! Amazing smoothies, large delicious portions of food. Great atmosphere ❤️
O.
I liked it, the quesadilla was very tasty and the lemon and ginger drink was nice too. It took a while to order even though it was not very busy, but the waiter was nice and friendly so it balanced it.
J.
Friendly, but not hurried, service of southern style food. Definitely the best curly fries in Wellington. Authentic red beans and gumbo. There is an interesting looking cocktail list. Their pies and milkshakes have a well-deserved reputation. Go hungry!
S.
Our first dinner stop in Wellington was here. Bustling little warm place with really fun and friendly staff. It was really relaxing just sitting up at the bar. Nice selection of drinks, with some vegan-friendly food :)
T.
This place has very bohemic vibes with Asian American influences from the ceilings bedecked in colourful Chinese lanterns to vinyl booths you'd see in a typical American diner. Went there just to try the key lime pie and pumpkin pie. First time for both and they were delicious!!! Key lime pie filling is to die for. Would definitely go back. Not a baby friendly place as the music is quite loud.
A.
Always my 1st stop for comfort food the moment I arrive back in Wellington. Pretty much the only place to go in Wellington for NOLA style creole food, and everything on the menu is worth a try.
No, I'm serious - try something new! The Beignets are proper coffee dunker donuts, almost smokey in their dark deep-friedness. The fried chicken and waffles are terrific - get extra maple syrup if you need to! The Huevos Rancheros are the best in Wellington. The fish tacos are outstanding. I don't know anywhere else in NZ that you can get a Muffuletta. Or po boys - and this place has a whole RANGE of them! Hot wings the proper way! Jambalaya, for crying out loud! Jerk chicken!
...and key lime pie. I would travel to Wellington JUST for their key lime pie.
Don't get the usual. The staff are friendly, a bit mad, and happy to introduce you to new things. Take advantage of it, get a big mug of coffee, and enjoy.
S.
Love me some Sweet Mother's. Authentic Cajun food. They've got the flavor right. Delicious, hearty, stick-to-your ribs food, with generous portion sizes just like the real thing because it is the real thing. Peace.
H.
My partner and I have breakfast here every time we stay in Wellington. Food is always delicious and a great environment. We informed the staff serving us on a small issue and the matter was resolved right away no issue. Amazing food and great customer service highly recommend
A.
Ideal place for brunch. I had the Big Breakfast which was filling and well balanced portions of a range of foods. Interior decorations are nice and add to the overall character of the cafe. Definitely worth checking out when in Pōneke 🤙🏽
K.
Lovely food, nice ambience, but was in a bit if a rush and didn't mention that so the food did take a while to arrive....
J.
Awesome restaurant- unique and great selection on the menu. Staff are helpful and really nice too
B.
Great coffee, relaxed atmosphere and a feast for the eyes. Relaxing music not played too loud. Recommended.
R.
A yummy and quaint restaurant with colorful decor on the end of Courtney place. I enjoyed my meal and want to come back to try many more things
S.
Good American style food, very generous portions and reasonable prices. Staff helpful and friendly. Music was a bit loud but I guess that is part of the atmosphere!
O.
We went here for brunch on our last morning in Wellington, and we were un no way disappointed. The coffee was bang on, and the food was amazing. Possibly the greatest brunch we have ever had. Highly recommend going here for any meal of the day. Friendly staff, good quality food and extremely reasonable prices.
P.
Had a great Mexican meal here, staff were friendly and the coffee wasn't too bad either, well worth the price.
A.
Love love LOVE Sweet Mother's desserts . The Bread and Butter Pudding with Bourbon sauce is my FAV!
E.
Very good food and drinks. Loved the deco and atmosphere.
F.
Best coffee in NZ! Thankyou La and the team. Best customer service and the food was sooo tasty. We had the Seafood Chowder and Eggs Herbert, both very filling and great flavours.
W.
This place has some amazing food and pies! Yummy! :) Nice staff also :) thank you!
H.
The waiters seem incredibly rude, standing Infront of you on their phone BUT that's how they input your food order so will have to forgive them for it! Especially with such great, New Orleans style food and interesting interior design
N.
Amazing ambience of this place. Decor is so interesting to observe. There's a lot to look at. Great customer service! Staff are so friendly and considerate. Food - amazing! Full of flavour! Definitely recommend.
K.
Fabulous place full of atmosphere and very good food. Staff are friendly and obliging. Well worth a visit
J.
Great service with amazing food and drinks, we had a variety of dishes around the table and no issues whatsoever.
The place was quite busy which is standard as it is very popular. Unfortunately they were also a little short on staff but they handled everything so well and we didn't have to wait long.
They have worked hard to deserve this amazing reputation and I'll definitely keep coming back.
J.
Delicious food. I went to University in New Orleans so I have strong opinions when it comes to cajun food. While Sweet Mother's isn't exactly like classic cajun food, it's the closest I've found in NZ. Their Jambalaya and Monica Pasta are great.
M.
The chicken and waffles were downright DIVINE. We also had the beignets which were AWESOME. loved the vibe of the space, the staff was friendly, the music was fun. I could totally die happy here
A.
Really nice food. Good selection of new Orleans food stuffs. Drinks let it down a bit as we got a jug of margaritas and only really got two glasses out of it. No paywave which is unsettling and bathroom needs a refresher.
Z.
Decent prices, great service, large portions and easy to get to. One of my favourite places to chill out - great for dinner or for a quality coffee! Indoor and outdoor seating. Great atmosphere!
J.
Delicious New Orleans style comfort food. Cheerful and upbeat with excellent service and huge portions. Definitely don't miss this! Perfect place for a lunch or dinner with friends. Great music and vibrant decor - and they're open until late, so they're one of the few places in Welly you can buy coffee in the evening.
J.
Food here is so good, highly recommend the ribs and desserts
B.
The eatery SMK came very highly recommend by numerous people and said that when visiting Wellington - you have to eat there, and it definitely did not disappoint us.
Great vibe, brilliant decor with very friendly and helpful staff, with ample parking in and around the area. They were extremely busy when we arrived and we managed to get an outside table for lunch.
Watching everything happening around us, we enjoyed Southern Fried Chicken, Waffles with Maple Syrup and a side of Potato Hash with some drinks, the food was seriously delicious and the huge portions, definitely did not disappoint our expectations. (Great value for your buck)
This eatery came very highly recommend to us and did not disappoint, so visit them as a local, an out of towner and support the great hospitality and food on offer of a local food eatery.
We will definitely be eating there again before going back home.
(Had to post some photos of our meal)
R.
Went for the 1st time a couple weeks ago for brunch... amazing service, atmosphere was quirky which I loved the staff were awesome, and food was delicious... thank you to the team there for looking after us all... would definitely return sooner than later...
T.
I discovered sweet mother kitchen a couple of years ago and was blown away by the taste. I made it a priority to go back when i had some time in Wellington this week. Unfortunately I cannot say it lived up to my extremely high expectations. Whilst still delicious, the leghorn po boy could have been a lot better. The fried batter was absolutely amazing but the chicken ifself was a little bland. The condiments lacked some punch as well.
That said, it may just have not been to my taste as i recognise that it was still a really well executed po boy. Trust that this won't stop me from returning next time! I'll just get the Cuban which was amazing :D
T.
Great food and atmosphere. Pretty busy. Unfortunately, the chips to guac/salsa ratio is seriously wrong. Finished the salsa and guacamole with half the chips still left. Otherwise, food is good.
D.
Freindly staff, great menu & delicious food. Sometimes they are very busy & you have to wait for a table or for your food to be brought out, but the food is worth it & there's plenty of decor to look at in the meantime. The tea cup I had was stained, so not washed properly. This place is iconic & I will certainly go back.
P.
If you're after a hearty meal, something different, then try the Gumbo or jambalaya. Decoration is crazy awesome
R.
Fun place with a relaxed atmosphere. Food seemed better the first time I visited.
A.
You can't go to Wellington without stopping at Sweet Mother's Kitchen for some fried chicken and curly fries!
C.
I love the burger (non veg), the pulled pork sandwich, the bills 😄 (for once...) and all the details that make the decoration!
H.
One of my absolute favourite places in the my home city 💜 the decor is fun and quirky, the staff are friendly and welcoming and the food is absolutely to die for! My particular favourites are the “Moose”, chicken in a basket and any of the shakes! Especially good for when you’re not feeling so flash and need some comfort.
A.
Good food and service. Really enjoyed the beignets.
A.
If you like key lime pie this is the place to visit. Cosy, chilled and cuisine to boot. Have tried most things on the menu from baby spare ribs, creamed spinach, gumbo to corn bread and of course the dessert pies. Take away options are available however if you are lucky enough to nab a table I recommend eating in. Street side seating is an option in the summer months. This is a lovely American style cuisine in a colourful little cafe at the end of Courtney place. Definitely worth a visit. The staff are friendly and helpful but when this place is busy the food can sometimes take a little longer than expected. Excellent chicken on waffles!
M.
Hadn't been in some time. Talking a few years. Great to see they are still kicking and serving top notch food and coffee. Chicken waffles = happiness
J.
Love the food, but pace of service needs a lift. It's a busy place, could use more than one wait staff, a hospo superstar could do it but on the day I went most recently that wasn't the case. Friendly, delicious, but needs to improve the flow.
J.
I ordered ribs it was good but the bbq sauce was a bit much which made the food too sweet. But wife ordered burger and she loved it. I tasted it I too LOVED it. I think I should have just told how I want the food and it wud have been fine coz the guys are super friendly. Definitely will suggest this place and will definitely go again.
J.
Ultra busy when we visited but the waitress did as much as was possible to accommodate us - friendly and great service and the food was delicious. Eggs bomba is the bomb!
M.
Service was slow for lunch on a Friday. I ordered a chicken po boy which was average at best. Fries were processed curly fries which came out in a cheap plastic bowl of sorts. Bruce Springsteen seemed to be on REPEAT, which I'm sure is fine for the many Bruce fans out there. I doubt I'll bother going to SMK again.
J.
Me and my friend have been checking off best chicken places in Wellington and Sweet Mother's Kitchen was one of them too. Great recommendation, I had their chicken and fries meal, very juicy chicken, must check out. Oh, and did I mention about their currency collection? Make sure to find your country's notes. 😂
R.
Had a 2 for 1 voucher off Facebook. So thought we would give it a go. My daughter and I were well impressed! Excellent service, delicious food, excellent atmosphere, awesome value for money! Will definitely go back. Awesome job Sweet Mother's Kitchen!
M.
VERY YUMMY! FOR SURE BEST CHICKEN PALCE IN WELLY OMG IT WAS SO MOIST
Also just a cool spot wit all the decorations
R.
Pretty good food. Decent prices too. The Jambala is quite good in my opinion.
C.
Orderd the beef short ribs with mash and corn bread. For the price the dish was not large enough and had been given one rib only, but the menu states ribs. Corn bread was very dry and the salad looked a couple of days old. The sauce was great and that alone is worth 3 stars. Don't think I'll eat there again anytime soon.
T.
Read reviews about a great key lime tart....they were right!
L.
Very cheerful friendly team, not only that, this cafe serves nice coffee and food. Well presented!
G.
The jug of margarita was the best we have ever had and the blackened fish was out of this world, never have we had such an incredible meal! If we lived in Welly, we would be eating here every night. Cant wait to come back!
j.
Great food, awesome ambiance, so colourful.
도.
Nice hearty meals :) Great customer service and excellent range of food! I loved every bite of food I had at SMK!
J.
Great vibe excellent service and would definitely order the chicken tacos again.
J.
best coffee i’ve tried so far, foamy, creamy and properly bitter. meals are delicious!
L.
My dad and I always enjoy meeting here for some beignets and vegan po’boys. It has an awesome eclectic vibe inside and food that cures my New Orleans nostalgia. It is one of the most unique Wellington establishments and I’m a fan of their big ole menu which prompts you to forgo a tried and true and go for something new! Fun spot!
D.
Excellent food and coffee. Friendly staff and quick service.
K.
We came. We ate. We left with takeaway boxes. Gonna do it again and again. YUM
V.
I came in recently for a banoffe pie and it was the best I've had in a long time!
C.
Cost effective dining with great food and drinks. The dessert pies on offer are a great addition to differentiate from any other food joint
T.
Great food and awesome service. Good area in town with a little bit of parking if your lucky
N.
Delicious food (my go to is the Cubano and key lime pie which though isn't 100% authentic to Florida/Miami it's the best in Wellington), quite popular (so expect it to be often busy) but worth the wait.
M.
Good food, great location. Reccomend
H.
Wow, best brekky ever😋 seriously good. Thanks team
P.
Smoked fish on hash with poached egg hollandaise and rocket. And a regular cup of mocha. Not bad!👍
H.
Have walked past this place 100 times and finally tried it today. Great decor and ambience. Its always very busy. Reasonable prices, good service. Sadly a bit disappointed with my meal of creamy mushrooms. Two dry pieces of grain bread and absolutely no creaminess to the mushrooms and very under seasoned. Very disappointed however I will give it another try.
F.
Amazing Wellington on a plate bloody Mary! The home made pickled vodka! Great vibe and service (as always)
D.
Great staff. Lovely food.
J.
Fast, friendly, funky & fun - not to mention tasty & great coffee
A.
Yummy food. Not that expensive too
A.
Staff are always so friendly and the menu is massive so lots to choose from and something for everyone!! Recommend for a cheap meal out. So reasonably priced but so good. Great ambience too.
A.
One of the best cafes in town. Always buzzing !
H.
Food was great, and the waiter, Harry, is a superstar. Recommended
A.
Thank you to the manager Vanja for making every visit enjoyable. Just the right mix of friendly and professional!
Highly recommend everyone to try everything on the menu plus the yummy pies and tarts in the cabinet!
A.
Milkshakes were not very thick and most of the food was good, but not amazing
S.
Fab feel in this place, it's hard to believe you are in the middle of Wellington. Something a little different and tasty. Gumbo to Jamabalaya.
E.
One of the best breakfast I ever have if you go before 11:30am. Really good portions and good flavor.
G.
A relaxed spot for lunch I really enjoyed the pork tacos. Service was friendly and relaxed and there was a good drinks selection.
The menu is varied and included plenty of plant based options too.
J.
Nice friendly place, good menu
E.
Stopped by on a busy Saturday night. The super friendly staff fitted us in no problem. Love the funky decor. The food is amazing...highly recommend the Cuban sandwich, the chilli herb bread and the Jerk c
Chicken (with bourbon mash instead of rice). Desserts looked fab as well....if only we could have fitted them in!
L.
We were a bit disappointed unfortunately, the Mac n Cheese was bland, the Jerk Chicken had no real spice and tasted overwhelmingly of cloves/cinnamon and the jambalaya was pretty one note. We were really expecting something special from the reviews but we're left wanting.
S.
Great food here and seriously efficient service. Ordered my burger and it was in front of me in less than 5 minutes. Messy old burger but delicious. Coffee bang on and the caramel slice was so good I stopped sharing it.
The rest of the menu looks great so we will be back to try more.
L.
Nice place to have a super casual meal. Not very pricey and the food is lovely. The beef burger was great. The beef itself was pretty normal, but all the other ingredients made it way better. The caramelized onions and the fried pickles inside the burger added so much flavor to it. The size is good. I wish they did not charge for fries.
Btw the waiters are super casual and very nice.
B.
Amazing food for a reasonable price. Try the curly fries!
G.
Fantastic place, loved the vibe, quirky decor with plenty to look at. The staff were excellent, warm, friendly and very approachable. One of our guests was very impressed with the size of the vegan menu, not just a couple of options from the regular menu. Delicious meals that were loved by everyone at our table. Will definitely be back again :)
M.
This American styled cafe is a must if you live in Wellington as you will be served you unbelievably good food by the fun and friendly staff which makes going out to brunch one of my favourite things to look forward to on weekends. My meal consisted of New Orleans style French toast and crispy fried Streaky bacon that I ate with a good helping of their absolutely beautiful homemade Smokey Hickory sauce ! They also give you the option of taking home a doggy bag if like me, your eyes we bigger than your belly then this place is for you.
A.
We loved our lunch here today, it was a great place to celebrate my birthday! Great vegan options! 💚💛💜
A.
First time here, came for desserts after having lunch in another restaurant nearby. My friend and i had coffees, tea , lemon pie, and rhubarb pie it was all nice. What i love the most from this place is actually the experience of authentic decoration. I can stare and wonder where all this stuffs came from. Here i posted some of it.
S.
Had 2 fantastic meals here! The curly fries and tacos are amazing
C.
Delicious food, exceptional service, perfect for small family gatherings, will definitely come back again
S.
Lovely staff, great ambiance, very good prices! Lovely place! However, I've been there 3 times and everytime I've left with a very full belly! "That seems like the opposite of a problem" I hear you say, and that is true. But the problem is the food is so oily, greasy and hearty I feel so sick afterwards! Nothing wrong with their menu at all but be warned health gurus
C.
Nice Food, very authentic Burritos, nice curly fries and the sandwiches are worth a try too.
I really liked, that you can smell the teas before ordering them!
Also very homey atmosphere.
J.
dont lets its casual style put you off going here as this place is highly recommended by me for breakfast. It was also great listening ro the old couple next to us say they had been back three days in a row, and I can see why. Very weird mannequin arm hanging out the ceiling though lol
C.
Cheerful and well priced. Food was okay but not amazing. The French toast was in a puddle of maple syrup that it all became too sweet. Friend chicken po boy was yummy, soft bread and crispy chicken is a great match. Iced coffee was okay but there's better in Wellington. The service was excellent, friendly staff and helpful too
L.
A reminder of the food back home, big greasy portions. Loved it. The milkshakes are to die for. And I'm not kidding when I say the portions are big. Also shout-out for having a&w root beer and Dr. pepper.
L.
Lovely place! Been there at the same location for quite some time now so becomes a historical place for many of us. Delicious food! Real feel that all meals made with love and gives this feeling of "home made". Have this unique design with all those notes on the wall and all toys at the counter that also makes you feel cozy and comfortable. Friendly staff always have a smile on their faces and happy to help you with the choice. Highly recommend!
T.
Funky type of place. Seated on long table just out side of front wall but under cover of roof. 2 large heaters so not to bad. I work on the principle if the place is packed the food is good, and that worked the food was great. I had Jambalaya most enjoyable, I was in a party of 16 and not one complaint about the quality or quantity of the meal. The staff where all HAPPY go lucky but service very good. Plenty of room between tables inside and every one that I could see all had smiles on their faces.
L.
We went to Sweet mother's kitchen last Sunday for brunch. We walked in and our first impressions were fantastic it had a cool quirky casual vibe with lots of memorabilia and trinkets. Everywhere you turn there was something different to look at or notice. The staff were really cool chill and casual and genuinely interested in your experience with them.
I don't buy a lot of coffee in cafes as for me it's a weekly treat so with a lot of competition in Wellington I was pleasantly surprised at the cappuccino I had. For me a lot of places curdle the soy milk which ruins the taste altogether and creates a horrible texture. But sweet mother's kitchen made it spot on for my taste and clearly understand how to work different milks. My partner had a salted caramel milkshake which was to die for! I also had an apple juice which was delicious. I'm not sure if it's homemade or not but it was good.
The food: my partner and I haven't been exposed to much New Orleans cuisine so we weren't 100% sure what to expect. I felt our experience at sweet mothers was authentic and the food was packed with flavour.
We ordered the hokies to share which were tasty jalapeno corn and salty bites. Although delicious they needed the sauce that it came with and it compliment it very well. They were very dense all though small in size and a little dry by themselves.
My partner had the hog waffle. He said it was different to anything he tasted before the waffle itself was dense and made with corn flour (we think) and full of flavour. He said it was lacking a sauce of some kind. We thought perhaps some syrup on the side or lightly drizzled over to cut through and moisten your palette.
I had the Eggs Herbert which was so tasty and I finished all of that. I was completely stuffed afterwards but I found it only a little disappointing that the baguette was soft and wasn't toasted. This dish has grilled fish which was cooked perfectly to my liking. Hollandaise sauce, creamed spinach and an egg, all wet ingredients, were there too which are very tasty but unfortunately it needed a texture balance of some crispy toasted baguette that would have blown it completely over the edge. Secondly for me the dish needed less sauce. The amount of sauce and creaminess on the plate hid the complete star of the dish, the artichoke. When I did get some artichoke on my fork it completely took that dish to another level. I would certainly recommend a little less hollandaise sauce and having that artichoke on display because it was heaven! I was unsure when I would get some artichoke as it was hard to see. This dish could be easily refined, just a little and there would a huge difference!
Sweet mothers kitchen has a great menu and we will certainly be back to try some of your lunch and dinner options. Thank you for a great experience see you again soon.
Sean and Laura - the Global Grazers.

Literally the best waffles I’ve ever had
K.
Search for a Americana style restaurant found what I was looking for. Good food good music, very popular place. Need to get in early to get a table!
/.
Located in a busy area of Wellington's hospo/shopping district, Sweet Mother's Kitchen claims to make "hearty" or "real" food for people . . . at restaurant prices.
Probably an OK place for a cup of herbal tea or something, but ultimately S.M.K. asks around $20.00 for a blobby, simple hamburger without anything special while other places offer either more variety, more food or better quality for the same price. This place serves the sort of food your parents might have made you on a week night. Lots of kitsch collectables and plastic kids junk at the service desk, also.
C.
lovely friendly customer service our table was a bit crooked the waffles had a bit to much sauce would be better tasting with cream cheese the ricotta was a bit weird with it. the big js breakfast a bit tasteless but still nice still would recommend this place
S.
The Triple H burrito is soooo good, it is a MUST-TRY for first timers! I forgot my name after I tasted it. We also ordered Johnny quesadillas. Good food!
A.
Food was okay. But i really appreciate the service staff. Very attentive, pleasant and noticed our uneasiness with one of our friends right away.
L.
We were lucky to get a seat, and were glad we did! The decor in this place is out of this world! The staff were all very inviting and friendly and were great at recommending certain dishes and drinks. The food came out super quick (even on a busy saturday) and the portions were generous. Will be recommending this place to everyone and coming back when I can
E.
easy going place. the menu is unpretentious, old school. awesome atmosphere, come here for the charm
H.
Based on the other reviews, I was very excited to try SMK. I was pretty sorely disappointed - the food lacked much flavour, and whatever flavour it did have was very one note. Maybe it was a bad day in the kitchen, but I can't say I recommend this restaurant.
R.
Best southern fried chicken I've had in a while, worth the stop if you have a hankering.
L.
P.
It gets crazy busy at night, but the wait is worth it. Honestly, the best food we had in Wellington was had here. We came back a second time and the food was just as good the second time around! Fantastic seafood chowder, hot wings, curly fries, salad, tea, coffee... All good quality. I had been looking everywhere for seafood chowder that was like some I'd had in Orange County, LA - theirs is the closest I've ever found.
Loved it. Great vibe here too. Come before 4pm if you'd like to avoid the crowds. It wasn't too crowded for Thursday lunch either.
G.
One of the best places in Wellington for simply yummy, moreish food.
And despite everything going on in the world, you can always count on these guys to stay true to what they have always done.
Great food, great service, great location!
S.
Great service and great food. We had a fantastic breakfast at Sweet Mothers today. I will go again when in Welly next time for sure. Thank you so much
S.
I ordered vegan burger and some curls. The vegan burger tasted really different from other burgers and it doesn't come with a patty. But it was still very delicious.
S.
Good, but not as good as it used to be I would say. Seafood chowder is noticeably smaller than previously I think.
Sweet pies are still great still.
M.
The decoration is stylish and traditional, full of money from all around the world, which is kind of different. The food is also reasonably tasty and the curly fries are interesting. It's worth a visit once in a while as they have good portion sizes. What they can improve is their service speed and develop a system for people waiting for tables. We were waiting for a while and they forgot about us. In general, it's not bad, but it's not the best either.
R.
Only yummy food is served here. Kids ordered eggs and waffles, then promptly swapped with each other when they saw what the other had. I ordered muesli and it was delish. The kids waffle portion was really generous and I had to have a taste. As mentioned, Yum!
R.
One of the best burgers I've had on my trip. Curly fries to die for.
Highly recommend!!!!
R.
Awesome place to stop have a drink or a feed and watch everyone walk by.
J.
This was such a lovely place. Very cute and quirky. It was a bit of a wait for the food (5pm on a Saturday so probably to be expected) but damn it was worth it. I got hot chips and a buddah bowl with blackened fish and it was soooo good! I didn't have room for dessert but hopefully next time.
R.
I would love to rate you 5 but I simply cant. The athmosphere is amazing. I was seated less than 5 minutes after I arrived. The service was absolutely lovely but the food was beyond terrible. No flavour, lukewarm plates, chicken was dry and rice overcooked. Please take this constructively, you have such a great concept. Put a little more effort in the kitchen.
E.
Super friendly service and amazing comfort food! Was skeptical of going since I hadn’t heard anything about it but was blown away by the character and quality of Sweet Mothers!
C.
First time at Sweet Mother's Kitchen. Friendly staff, great food authentic and a really enjoyable place. Will be back to try other menu items!
B.
A real old school Delight. Amazing range of food and a place really worthwhile going while in Wellington
C.
Great coffee and atmosphere and staff. Disappointed with the vegan breakfast. Ordered the tempeh scramble but there was nothing scrambled... And no tempeh in sight.... Just a chunk of artichoke and a slice of pepper on my plate next to some black beans. Please give the next person a scramble or change the name of the dish...
C.
Had the bambam bowl with spiced grilled fish and it was just fantastic! Great cafe all round. Service and coffee always good.
A.
Lovely atosphere.
Nice drinks and food.
Freshly baked etc.
Very pleasant and homely.
Staff are pleasant and very helpful ☺️
Namaste 😇☘️ Joy
s.
Fast service , great people , central location , innovative decor, good place to talk out loud about classic movies like Scarface or any politically subject without upsetting the squares, climate change alarmists and "woke" culture!
M.
Good food, great service - would definitely go again.
J.
Sweet Mothers Kitchen had a wide range of really nice food. It's simple, tasty and the portions are on the large size.
I highly recommend the Boom Boom BBQ Chicken with a side of coleslaw and curly fries. If you can fit it in, an iced mocha and/or a piece of one of theirs pies for dessert!
It's very popular in the weekend and at nights so be prepared to come back or wait.
Staff are generally friendly but can be a little abrupt when it's busy.
The interior is quirky and cool with lots of Wellington culture crammed in.
A.
I've tried this place a number of times and I've always left feeling underwhelmed. The burrito I ordered had no flavor. The meals my buddies ordered were similar. Boring no flavor and not fresh. The chicken was dry and microwaved. Ambience is great but the food and service does not back it up.
F.
Good food. I wish they didn't put the maple syrup on the French toast and served it with it. French toast didn't come with anything else like bananas or berries. Waffles were fresh. Portions were big.
D.
It's a cafe located near Courtenay place bus junction. Very happening cafe and busy too. Food is good and coffee too. The cafe interior is very unique. It got both indoor and outstanding seating arrangements. Price is bit high. I wont say it's an exceptional place but good.
L.
Took some friends here for the first time and they absolutely loved it. Staff were attentive and gave us more time to look at the menu as there were so many great options to choose from. I still find it hard to choose and I've been here many times! I also had a snikkers milkshake which was soo good and not icy which I've found at other restaurants.
A.
Really good food but super slow service...hade to ask staff for knifes and forks after food was at our table super sad..cause food was great
H.
The bambam salad , with grilled chicken and halloumi, was sooo good! Amazing flavours and so fresh, also well presented. The halloumi was also cooked the best I've ever had. Will definitely be back, thanks!
M.
The main I reason I went here was because a comment further down said large portions. They were normal size, I smashed mains and desert no problem. Come here for mouth watering food not large portions
G.
Ordered food online and it was delicious when it arrived. Good value for money and really generous portions. We'll be coming back. 😊
J.
Great place. Casual and quirky. We went on an extremely busy Saturday lunch time. Waitress was attentive and honest about wait time. Fried chicken po boy was to die for and breakfast burrito was lovely. Surprisingly delicious milk shake too. Big thumbs up. It be nice to be able to book though only because I would hate to go and miss out on another great feed because of how popular is it!
**visted again since. Food still great but 40 min wait time was crazy! I fear it's going down hill service wise
L.
Very busy and you can't book so come early to nab a seat! Great menu. Cool staff. Everything yummy. Wholesome homemade taste. Great location opposite Hannah Playhouse. You'll want to come back!
J.
This place has character a plenty and than some. If you don’t like casual/alternative this isn’t the places for you, everyone else should check it out. Friendly and good service, had the vegetable jambalaya which was well seasoned and speedily prepared. I love the ambiance and will visit again.
A.
Retro vibes, very nice staff good food, but extremely crowded.
D.
Delicious, friendly staff. Amazing food. Such a wee gem of a place. Quite an alternative atmosphere. Server brought a small box of toys for my son which was lovely. Already planning our return.
K.
We visited just for some dessert, the apple pie and pecan bourbon pie were both delicious as were our hot drinks.
S.
Great selection of food, something for everyone. Delish wines esp astrolabe sav. Desserts perfect size for sharing and all reasonably priced. Service friendly and fast. Great team. Love this place. Will be back again again.
K.
Amazing food! But don't know how I feel about the staff using there phones to take your order. Other than that love it! Will definitely be back ♡
C.
We've always had a great experience with SMK. Even during lockdown, they really took great care of us. I absolutely love the lime pie!!
N.
An awesome little place to eat and hang out.
B.
Our go to when visiting Wellington. Quality food, great music and great atmosphere.
K.
Sweet Mothers is a bit of a Wellington institution. The restaurant serves a selection of hearty food you would find in the southern states of America and is always delicious. Personal favourite menu item is the Chicken basket - buttermilk fried chicken and curly fries. This place can often be hard to get into as there isn't a huge amount of seating inside. Kind of on the pricey side too. Worth a try.
S.
Cozy place. Food was really good. Reasonable price.
R.
Always a good experience for food and a coffee!
D.
Comfort food done right. Excellent chicken and the Po Boys are great too. Snickers milkshake also a good choice. Have been here on a couple of trips to Wellington and it's always been busy, but the food comes relatively quickly.
E.
Lovely fresh food. Friendly service..
J.
Delicious vegan meals. Ask for the vegan menu. Thumbs up!
J.
Great vibe, great service, quirky, alternative but this is soul food like your Mama used to make...mac n cheese, buttermilk chicken and curly fries, jambayla, bread pudding with whiskey butterscotch sauce. And I even got myself a pot of tea! Love, love, love. I'm coming back to try the rest of the menu ❤
n.
Chicken and waffles, huge portion, love it
P.
One of, if not my favourite places to get a bite of food at any time of day. The venue is awesome in a classic New Orleans style, real cajun-creole esque. The menu is exceptional, with my personal favourite being the tripple-h burrito, the thing of dreams. Couple that with the best curly fries in Wellington and a good beer and you've got yourself a right winner.
D.
Friendly welcoming servers and portions are much more filling than they appear. However, the fried chicken crust was slightly dry but everything well seasoned and service was decent considering how busy Friday nights can get!
J.
Oh yeah! Strolling down Courtney Plc to find a bite to eat. Stopped. Had a look at the menu. Walked away. Came back. So glad we did! Best Ribs Ive had in a while. Amazing service. Like AMAZING service. Amazing food. Like AMAZING food. Great Cocktails. The atmosphere here is electric. Awesome Buzz. My only complaint (if it can be a complaint) is that the servings were HUGE. Im tiny. I cant eat that much. Damn wish I could but!!! Will. Be. Back. Over and over.
D.
Amazing food and exceptional service! Great value for money, a superb dining experience for anyone who enjoys American/Louisiana style cuisine. A must if you are in Wellington!
J.
Still a cool vibe but the food isn't as good. The jumbalaya & jerk chicken both lacked seasoning.
h.
Jumbalaya was nice. Not amazing, but good comfort food on a cold night. Curly fries were a nice addition. Good service. Warm & welcome atmosphere.
C.
Great home style comfort foods, would've given 5 Stars if the Nachos weren't Burnt & the grill cook with the cap hat had Washed his hair that day etc.
everything else was great..
J.
My new favourite place in Wellington. We visited here with friends when visiting Wellington. I loved it. The decor was fantastic and the food...omg the food...
I had the Orleans sandwich which was buttermilk chicken in a bagette with slaw. Was delicious! I ordered curly fries too but really didn't need them. I only ate 3 because I was so full! I did though have room for banoffee pie which was divine. My parents took a trip to Wellington and I recommend here. They were not disappointed.
The only thing I was disappointed with was the fact I was too full to try the beynets.
If the added some Orleans themed music it would have everything!!!
P.
Very good leghorn buttermilk chicken sandwich. Perfect balance of textured chicken, slaw, sauce, cheese and subway style bread.
B.
Always delicious. Great casual space to catch up with friends over good food & cocktails. Forever a favourite.
T.
We visited twice on our trip to Wellington and both meals were excellent.
Everything on the menu sounds delicious and we'll certainly be back.
Hopefully they might find a bigger premises because they certainly need it with their current popularity.
S.
Perfect place to get some breakfast or lunch. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. Has tasty vegetarian options but get in a bit early since it’s gets pretty packed by locals. Dogs are welcome.
A.
Great Wellington cafe. Been around for ages. Not much to look at from the street but great food great staff. Usually is pretty busy but worth going. My go to is the eggs Herbert. Chicken and waffles and po boys are also excellent.
E.
Great breakfast place. I had the Pain Perdue (French French Toast) with a Latte, and they were delicious - loved the buttery flavor of the bread, the smidgen of syrup, and the sprinkling of icing sugar and nuts. I found the service friendly, prompt and good.
R.
Really liked what was on offer here and the staff were friendly and looked like they enjoyed their work and each other.
Was impressed with the vegan options and was directed well to some favorites.
Good food, good banter, great milkshakes
R.
Delightful decor, friendly staff, and really convenient location after a movie at the Embassy. The pulled pork sandwich and curly fries really hit the spot. Good coffee too.
N.
Friendly staff and atmosphere. Relatively cheap for delicious and authentic food and coffee. My only complaint is that the chicken waffles were too sweet, but their American customers seemed to like it.
n.
Really popular among Wellingtonians and indeed for a good reason. Nice food, quirky decors, good service and coffee. Highly recommend their chili chocolate is yum! If you want to try a good Mexican/New orleans restaurant this is probably good choice. The place can get quite busy so there might be a wait but it's worth it. It will be great if they can take bookings over the weekends.
H.
i ordered the ribs with bourbon mash and the fish tacos. the ribs were tender and slightly bitter but when you have it with that bourbon mash and the peppery rocket, it was truly a match made in heaven.
the fish tacos were just as good. light, tangy and flavorful, everything you want in a fish taco. the fish and slaw was in perfect balance with the house made source. my reaction after my first taco was to flag down the waiter and otder another taco.
i finished with a side of beignets and it was a very good call. they were light and fluffy with a crunchy exterior. a perfect finish to a lovely meal.
the service was truly amazing. the staff obviously enjoyed working there and it shows clearly in the quality of the food.
the only negative of sweet mothers is how busy it is. when i went back the next morning for a repeat i was sad to see a packed house. but thats to be expected from such an amazing eatery. luckily, the pies are available for takeaway ;)
P.
Great atmosphere, awesome food, the best coffee I've had in ages, super primo staff, funny, engaging but super helpful. Pricing is great for what you get, cocktails are fab. Recommend to all....👍👍🥂🙂🙂
j.
Pretty much my favorite cheap easy place in Wellington. They have great hours, the curly fries are the ultimate comfort food and if you get a chance don't nuts trying a piece of their key lime pie. Dang that's good.
L.
Love it for brunch ... mmm yum
L.
Gorgeous, eclectic little eatery. Love love love the seafood chowder - we were going to have something sweet too but didn't have room after that! Funky ambiance, always busy.
E.
Gorgeous food, fab atmosphere. Love this place, love the cuisine. It's good vibes!
P.
All positive. Looking for vego GF and had choices. Enjoyed tasty enchiladas. Great service, friendly & efficient waitress sped up our order so we could get to our show. Came back afterwards for bread and butter pudding, which was delicious.
M.
The food was lovely and the service was 50/50 I was served by the manager and ordered a Cider. He asked for my Id so I showed him my licence but he didn't except it and he asked me if it was a New Zealand Licence and I said yes. I am 36 years old not Impressed!!!
E.
The staff were very friendly
The place was clean
The food was AMAZING. We had the Gumbo and jambalaya and they were incredible. Just the right amount of spice .
Would definitely recommend!
S.
I had the fish tacos, which were very good. The servers were all very friendly and in good moods, they seemed happy to be there. Great atmosphere, really love the colourful lights. The price was good.
B.
Yummy food - boneless buttermilk fried chicken is the most popular menu item and is also good value - $17.50, comes with curly fries & coleslaw. Can currently get fried chicken only with an IPA beer for $16, 'Wellington in a basket' special. Side of red beans and rice (cooked with pork stock) is another good bet, especially with comeback sauce on top.
C.
Usually bomb food and service and would not hesitate to give 5 stars. But the guy we had serving us today wasn't very helpful and gave the impression that we were being a burden by choosing to eat here. But as usual tasty food. I think by this point I have had most of their menu and am yet to be disappointed.
R.
Yummy food, friendly service.
J.
Really cool little place with friendly staff and I highly recommend the fried chicken it was super tasty. Will be back for more in future
A.
While a number of people I have spoken to about SMK have disliked the food or had a bad experience there, I have only had delicious food and friendly service.
I would suggest getting there a little early as they do not tale reservations amd due to the smaller location, they fill up quite quickly.
My favourite meals would be the fried chicken basket or the large ribs (just be prepared to get your hands dirty with the last one!)
D.
Great food once again. One of my favourites in Wellington. Not for everyone as it's qwerky and alternative. Definitely not fine dining and fancy but relaxed and friendly. More like a little on the rough and ready side of things.
L.
Absolutely delicious breakfast.
Beautifully cooked. Great coffee. Great music & atmosphere & service.
Quirky cafe - don't miss it!
A.
Unique menu but my meal was a drier than I would have liked. Otherwise good
G.
Last time I was here I waited about 55 minutes for my food and the place wasn't crowded. The people here seem very relaxed and not always business orientated. The food was very good but also very expensive. I think that it is a good restaurant if you are a tourist that wants to try one of Wellington's "iconic" places to eat and have nothing planned for the next hour and a half.
S.
Long wait time during brunch, so so coffee, nothing special you can say about the food.
F.
My son ordered chicken in a basket with curly fries and was delighted with the crispness of the batter and fries. Sweet Mothers always delivers wholesome food at reasonable prices.
B.
Great service great food. A must when visiting Wellington
Y.
I always try to come here whenever I am visiting Wellington. Great po boys and when I happen to still have space for dessert, the pies are delicious too! An iconic Wellington establishment.
A.
I've been here 3 times now and every time the food has been sensational and the price isn't even that bad when you consider how good the food is.
It can be hard to find a spot at peak times but the staff will always help you find the right table.
Love this place!
A.
Great food, good service
L.
Okay. Food was good and it's an interesting place to look around. Not a lot of space so super squashed in. Quite pricey but worth a visit to try a signature dish.
B.
Such a busy little place for early on a Sunday morning.
Absolutely amazing creamy mushrooms and poached eggs done just right
J.
All in all it wasn't bad. You can't make reservations so there is a wait as its fairly popular. The food is alright but overpriced and the portions are tiny. The staff forgot a few things, we were given water glasses but no water and they also forgot a drink I had ordered. The staff weren't all that attentive. The decor is a quirky mismatch of different styles which seem to come together and work.
R.
Great food, nice spot
R.
Incredible food and great service. Would 100% recommend. I had the Prawns Monica which was by far one of the best meals I've ever had and so reasonably priced!
M.
So laid back. Great staff and the food. Oh so delicious. Gets very busy
I.
Chicken in basket is filling. Can feed 2 persons with small stomachs.
A.
This place was awesome. The service was quick. when we went there, the waitress took us to the table and took our order. We order the chicken in the basket and 2 coffees. it was tasty and portion size was good.
N.
Great service, great food. However, the restaurant is very cosy and we shared a larger table with another smaller group. We weren't a fan of the table sharing but other than that it was a fantastic meal.
L.
Sweet mommas, simple seating with quirky decor. Southern fayre with a bit of Mexican thrown in. Sumptuous sweet pies and tarts. Have to try the pumpkin pie and peanut pie, truly sweet just like your mum used to make. We love the slightly spicy chicken in a basket. Cannot beat curly fries, a twisty treat.
J.
Great food and atmosphere. Staff were friendly and helpful.
D.
Really cool New Orleans-style bar in Courtney place. Quite intimate, as the tables are close together but it gives the bar a cool atmosphere. I ordered the basket of chicken gumbo. Both were very tasty! Make sure you order a side of Hush Puppies!
M.
First, as always, the long dark did not disappoint. After six weeks in NZ I have yet to be served anything but an excellent cuppa. The huevos rancheros was conventional in preparation but excellent in execution! Egg yolks a perfect gooiness but not runny. Obviously fried slowly and not to a crispy plastic. The generous serving of black beans were the best ever. Although skimpy in amount served, the pico de gallo ("salsa") and guacamole made in house and first-rate.
B.
Louisiana comes to Wellington. Cajan cooking and other southern inspired menu choices at most reasonable prices. A friendly, obliging team makes diners feel welcome. It's usually hard to find a table. Handy to all Courtenay Place buses, both inbound and outbound.
L.
Great service felt really welcome :) also the burger and curly fires were fantastic! Especially the sauce, it was extraordinary!
L.
I would move to Wellington only to try everything on the Sweet Mother's Kitchen menu. I absolutely love the decoration as well and the staff is very friendly.
O.
One thing I noticed is that when restos here put Mexican dishes in their menus, rarely do they come close to having it taste "Mexican", so it's a waste of time & money. I've lived in Cali where we have great authentic Mexican food & good comfort 'southern soul food' restos too. The Huevos Rancheros here was a huge let-down. I don't expect a 100% authentic replicate but at least make it palatable & at least have some "Mexican" flavor flair in it. Otherwise, just call it dry toasted tortillas w/ bland black beans w/ a side of bland guacamole & salsa. The fried chicken was so-so. The milkshakes, attitudes of the staff & the overall service were alright. though
g.
Quick service and delicious food!
E.
Lovely food and great value. The Mexican breakfast burrito was delicious and came out fast. The coffee is nice too. We came here on a recent trip to Wellington and would visit again :)
W.
Coffee and beignets mmmm. Very kitsch. Great rock music past hits
A.
This place never disappoints, we came in during Anzac holiday. They were busy but the service was still excellent. We didn't have to wait for the delicious food for very long either.
T.
Good karma, interesting menu and, I guess, moderate prices for Courtenay Place in Wellington... I'd visit much more often were my budget larger!
S.
Staffs amazing, foods amazing love love love
V.
Great staff, prompt and friendly service. Absolutely loved the mad dog beef short ribs and bourbon mash. Wife loved her fried chicken. Would definitely go back
R.
love love love smk! my partner and i nearly always go for lunch/breakfast. love all the servers and coffee is great! ♡
G.
Good food. Reminded me of Louisiana... not quite that good but quite enjoyable.
T.
So many great meals here. Perfect for any time of the day. My favourites are the Po Boys - Pulled Pork is best, and the Eggs Bomba. Delicious and reasonably priced. It's a great social vibe and a Wellington must do.
B.
Sweet Mother’s Kitchen brings authentic American style food to Wellington. Whether it is butter milk fried chicken or Po boys there is a distinct flavour of the US complemented with a range of craft beers. This place is the place to go.
T.
Always good coffee and a selection of cabinet sweet pies. Fried chicken is among the tastiest around, and you can't go past their curly fries (among other things).
S.
The best curly fries in Wellington are found here and the menu is almost overwhelming because everything sounds so good! The milkshakes are some of the best flavours too, the salted caramel is amazing.
J.
Amazing food, absolutely delicious. We will spread the word bug time even though they dont need a recommendation as the place was constantly full. A really enjoyable experience.

Awesome Cuban sandwich. Good coffee too. Very reasonably priced.
S.
Eclectic Cafe Bar, fantastic place to eat, seems to be small plates of dishes, good for mixing and matching with a Mexican type of feel.
Great craft beers as well as wine list.
I.
Lovely dinner here tonight. Delicious tasty food, friendly service. Definitely recommend this place and if we are back in Wellington we will eat here again 👍🏻
A.
One of the few eateries in town that genuinely earns the designation "funky". Interior decor is a riot of New Orleans inspired colour, and the menu follows suit, with po boys, beignets, and my personal fave, fried chicken and waffles. Frequently busy but worth it.
D.
This place has a great vibe going on and attracts an eclectic mix of customers. My only concern is everything comes with curly fries , even the sticky ribs , I would have enjoyed more ribs and no fries , maybe management could offer orders with no fries ?
B.
Delicious food, good, friendly staff. Only draw back is the long wait for our food. Took 30min for our wing starters and didn't have our mains till just over an hour after ordering.
L.
Normally food is pretty decent, however find myself paying $8.50 for a slice (1/8th of the pie bascially) of rhubarb pie, surely it doesn't cost $64+ dollars to make one rhubarb pie? found that a bit ridiculous.
Otherwise good.
V.
Cool place to grab a coffee or booze , pretty chill environment. Service person was a slice of sweetness.
C.
Amazing, eclectic decor. Delicious breakfast, lovely staff. Fantastic
B.
Good fried chicken and Souther soul food.
a.
Had a lovely Kiwi-styled breakfast here consisting of hot cakes with bacon, eggs with Mochacino coffee.
B.
A must-do while in Wellington. I come here every time I visit because the food is delicious, the atmosphere is so friendly and cosy, the staff are helpful and hilarious, and the pie is AMAZING.
P.
Fabulous cafe. The staff were very friendly, and the food was great. The fries in smoked sausage gravy and fish Po Boy sandwich were excellent.
N.
Wow the sister that served me my milkshake had such good energy and great comunication skills. Will definitely be back with friends and family ❤️

We were only in Wellington for a few days but after a dinner at Sweet Mamas we made sure to carve out some time to come back again the next day for lunch before our flight home. I can highly, highly recommend the cuban po boy, or the leg horn if you're mpre into chicken, and a snickers shake. Plus all the staff are super lovely, and the decor always gives you something new to look at. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a bite to eat in Wellington.
The girlfriend says "it was yummy", so i feel I'm backed up here.

The Menu is Incredibubble!! Healthy choices abound but something different too.
Service is really good!! Positioned right near The Cambridge Hotel and The Base. Close to movies, bars and banks. Closes at 9.30 mid week. I LOVE THIS PLACE ❤🍸
R.
Service is sometimes lacking, though that's probably because they're always very busy. Great food! Recommended for all meals, and their brunch menu is excellent.
D.
awesome service and great food. The ribs and curly fries were so good. Heaters outside as well which is nice.
J.
Food generally good but don't be looking for authentic Nawlins cooking. And my mee-maw would apologize for serving up what passes for peanut butter pie here. But if you have no reference point for the selections here, chances are you'll like it.
R.
Came here for a family birthday of 8 and was blown away by the hospitality and delicious food. It’s all about sharing the love. Book ahead if you have a large group of 8+ to avoid waiting.
D.
Good food, as always. But service can be a bit iffy during peak times. I remembered there was a time that they've forgotten about me and gave the tables to several other people who came after me.
S.
Food was very tasty and the service was friendly, a beautiful place for breakfast.
G.
Great food, plenty of it, and a good atmosphere. Can be noisy, and there are generally really long waiting times to be seated at peak times. They do great curly fries.
B.
Great vegetarian food, lots of variety, and lots of flavour. Definitely a must if you've never been here before. Easily top five places in town for a plate of nachos!
L.
The blackened fish was to die for. Just delicious and perfectly cooked. Great friendly service. Definitely be back
S.
Seems to be always busy but worth any wait. Food is delicious, staff friendly and milkshakes are a must have. I can't resist getting a takeaway slice of pie at the end of the meal.
N.
Best Breakfast burrito.. pretty much get it every weekend, alternating with curly fries because also delish! Value for money for sure! The staff are a unit 👌
T.
Great coffee and a very chilled vibe. Can see why it was constantly busy while I drank and caught up on work.
V.
I love the food. I haven't tried everything on the menu but I definitely recommend the mad dog ribs and the curly fries. It's to die for.
T.
Beautifully authenticity Wellington queer and glorious with an understated dignity and wholesome food that left me feeling complete and like I belong in the world
L.
Great food selection at a great price. Quick too. Can't reserve a table so nest to go off peak to avood waiting for a table.
D.
Lovely food. The Po Boys are soo goood 😊💙
G.
The food is good, but the quality of service varies every time I go. There have been times when I've waited for an hour for my meal, and was served dessert in a takeaway box- despite having eaten my main at the restaurant and not asking for a takeaway dessert.
J.
I had the waffles with buttermilk deep fried chicken and it was glorious! Highly recommend! Also, very friendly staff, and cool aesthetic and atmosphere
C.
Very festival and a touch of New Orleans. Cute place to stop if you have some time to kill
M.
Great food. Had the RCA ribs with curly fries and a peanut butter shake. Great atmosphere and quick service!
K.
Absolutely amazing! Delicious filling food, for an awesome price.
M.
By far my favourite restaurant in Wellington! The buffalo wings, seafood chowder, curly fries and even side salad were AWESOME. They also have tea cosies, yes, tea cosies :D
H.
Wow. The food was amazing and the staff were helpful. Had a bit of a wait on the meal but made up with how yummy it was. Would recommend.
A.

Great family vibe and commendable service The culinary delights delicious and most satisfying One of Wellington's hidden treasures discover it for yourself
E.
Very tasty food, volume value for money. Service was good. Waiting time could be a bit long because the restaurant always look busy and full of customers.
C.
Cosy but busy, if wanna get a place and a table get early. Food has good taste but they can do better. I'm Mexican and I asked for huevos rancheros, dish on their menu and they did a good effort.
A.
Friendly staff and tasty food. Unfortunately we waited 40 minutes to be served our food while other tables came in, ate and left. Otherwise would give it 4 stars.
B.
Really popular cafe, so be sure to come in plenty of time to get a table! Good food, especially the waffles. Unique theme is executed well.
J.
Good food, good service. Over the years have strayed away from purely American/New Orleans style food, but still a nice place for food and chats.
C.
Delicious brunch/lunch at this friendly spot. Can’t wait to get back there for dinner!
B.
Fantastic friendly staff, good wholesome food. A definite favourite in Wellington
B.
Food was good but rude staff member ruined it for our group. Nice tasty selection otherwise.
J.
The best casual dining in Wellington. Great variety of southern style food.
A.
Great service and staff.. the food was worth every cent and you have the try the dessert pies! Very good, I'll be back for more. :-)
C.
Delicious food. A balanced menu where you can find vegetarian options, plenty of different options with meat and many optuon of deserts as well.
The staff are friday and always ready to help you.
L.
Pleasant staff and good food. My blackened fish was very nice. I had a better experience this time than a few years ago.
A.
So crisp clean chicken that is so so much delicious I wish to eat there again
C.
food was good. but the beat part was our waiter, harry! he was ace, such a fantastic complement to this restaurant! ❤
J.
Great coffee, perfect mocha, great chocolate to coffee ratio. Chicken waffles look and taste excellent.
R.
Sometimes gets smashed and wait times can suffer, but service is always great. Awesome pies and Mac n cheese. I also recommend the ribs and Gumbo.
M.
Friendly service and good food.
R.
Key lime pie is to die for. Seafood chowder was delicious and my dining partner loved his fried chicken. We’ll be heading back before we depart Wellington.
D.
Love going to SMKs for a coffee or a fried chicken burieto and curly fries. Lots to look at and great staff.
D.
I got the chicken burrito salad. Tbh I was a bit sceptical as I'm not a huge fan of blue vein cheese but really enjoyed it..I'd definitely go again..
