M. L.We stumbled upon this restaurant on Christmas Day on our way to an AirBNB in Ōhope. We were thrilled to find a place that was open. The owner was incredibly gracious and accommodated us. This was an elaborate Christmas buffet which required booking in advance. There was ham, lamb, fish n chips, mussels, shrimp, potatoes, roasted vegetables and salad. And we were lucky enough to be able to taste sticky date pudding and Eton mess made with pavlova and berries. This was our first experience of Christmas in NZ. We were so impressed with the food and generosity here. Heartfelt thanks for this memorable experience. ❤️
R. L.I booked for my husband's birthday and it was a wonderful evening, Brenda made us feel so comfortable and welcome. Lovely fire outside and space was perfect. When we had less people arrive than expected she helped jig the menu around so it worked for oue party. Food was delicious and catered for gf and veggies with delicious pizza and other platters. Could not recomend more for people who are looking for a place to host a party!
K. G.Lovely setting however the food was underwhelming for quite high prices. A Prawn Laksa is not a thick curry sauce with hardly any noodles and 4 small frozen shrimps. Disappointing dish. The service is good however for the menu prices I would expect a full table service rather than having to order at the bar.

D. K.Service was fantastic. There is a great garden area that we were able to take the dog. Offered a bowl of water for her too. Coffee was excellent. They have a fair offering of gluten free food, savoury and sweet. They were busy but everything arrived in a timely manner and with a smile. Will definitely stop again.

B. I.Beautiful food and the converted villa is a warm and comfortable venue. Chicken burger with baconnaise and touch of mango very tasty. Risotto was some of the best had!

J.We dined in on Christmas day, superb, the chef while frantically trying to carve the ham to keep up with the patrons, kept us all entertained with her humour, natural charm and ease in dealing with hungry diners. She remained good natured even when a lady asked if that was fish in the dish (clearly it was and it even had fries and tartare sauce next to it) and then the lady proceeded to let other patrons know loudly that there were mushrooms where she was?...
The chef was very patient and informed her that no, that was lamb and not mushrooms 😂 the lady was rather embarrassed but the chef touched her arm and whispered something to her which made chuckle, it was great to see a chef who is humble, forgiving and patient. Staff were great even though they were under the pump. Great great day with fantastic food. If I were to suggest one thing?
Custard would have been lovely as an option but overall, bravo
S. F.Great place, they cater for kids and dogos. They have a great playground for kids of all ages, nice outdoor area where you can keep an eye on them, water bowls placed around the place for the dogs. Food was tasty and was out of the kitchen pretty quickly. Staff were friendly and chatty.

J. M.Lovely gardens but must have caught the Chef on an off day. We wanted to exclude all toast, breads etc and we heard him grumble to staff 'why can't they have what's on the menu'. Have visited 3 times over the last 2 months but even though nice atmosphere we will not be returning. So have only given 2 stars under Whitehouse Cafe.
Today 1 May 2021 we visited as change of ownership. Now Thornton. What a difference the new owner and staff. Brilliant food and service. We will now return regularly to eat brunch here.

B.Have been trying to go for over a year, it's always so busy which is great, but I can say well worth the wait, went today and there we're only a few people, had the breakfast and wow best in whakatane so massive and well worth the cost. All staff were great and the place is very cosy and feels like your own back garden.

R. W.Stopped in here by chance. Just outside Whakatane but a great little cafe. Great food, easily one of the best chicken salads I have had and has a good range of food. Long black was smooth and not bitter. Overall great place will always go back here when in town.

The staff are wonderfully helpful..The food is just the size portions and taste to work with almost every pellet.. The menu is small allow the kitchen to do a set number of dishes really well, without compromising on standards.. I visited as a party of twenty on a sunday, So they would have been tested and they passed with with fly colors.. Well done very happy to say I will be back.

I. V.Nice little villa cafe, with good outdoor seating and playground for kids, friendly staff. Food looks good, flavors are ok, 5 ordered toasted steak sandwich, all steak cooked medium rare on garlic bread bun and green salad, comes with generous yumm hot chips & mayo. Chicken Fajita comes on a sizzling hotplate to the table, with jalepeno peppers, sour cream, sweet tomato chilli relish and 3 warm tacos on the side so you can assemble as you like.

B. F.New owners in August 2017 have a brunch/lunch focused operation at present, featuring both cook-to-order and self serve cabinet food. I brunched there with some friends last Sunday and we were all very pleased with the quality of food and service. The venue features an interesting old building in a country setting just a couple of minutes drive (or ten minutes cycle) from the Whakatane bridge. This is a very good addition to Whakatane's casual dining scene and I look forward to them extending their hours to include dinners.
