I attended the school for about a year and I can tell you my guitar playing went from strumming to jack johnson songs…. To completely improvising solos all over the neck naturally. The Teachers are awesome and really care for your playing. They push you just the right amount and are always there to help outside of class over email and through other resources the school offers. Unfortunately I had to pull out due to reasons, but will be back as soon as I can. An easy 5 Stars!!!

Excellent school to begin your guitar journey. Already I have learnt a lot in my 6 months as a student starting from scratch. Many other fantastic opportunities which extend from weekly lessons, such as jam evenings, workshops and performing with other students on stage. I would highly recommend anybody who is looking into learning guitar to join the school - the progress you will see will surprise you

Pretty happy progressed from playin' a few chords to confidently improvising over blues and other tunes. Dylan has a systematic approach to guitar teaching, not just playing songs. AGS is best guitar school in NZ I'd reckon, highly recommended for all levels. The only downside is that my music taste has gone from contemporary to 1960s' old stuff, which made my friends telling me stop hanging out with old people.

I am a "self taught" guitarist and played for 25 years on and off before starting lessons this year with the Auckland Guitar School. I was looking for inspiration to improve, and the lessons have done that, and so much more for me. I've been gently introduced to all sorts of new technical skills, and this has made a massive difference to my playing. I am learning new songs, but learning how to play them correctly, and having fun as we go along. We learn a bit of theory which is cleverly introduced so that it is not boring or overwhelming. I cannot recommend the lessons with Auckland Guitar school highly enough. Craig B

AGS is a great guitar school. They are super professional and provide great opportunities to play at all levels. Their technical expertise is second to none but they also focus very heavily on the needs and goals of individual students.

Prior to joining I was definitely a "learn by ear" player but I've now ironed out many bad habits and I feel a lot more capable when playing. Wide variety of song material, there's always something new to learn each week. It's great to mix with other students who are enthusiastic about guitar. Dylan and colleagues are great teachers, they simplify relevant music theory so I can understand it. I now listen to my favourite songs with new appreciation of their musical structure, and how to incorporate those things into my playing. Thanks heaps AGS!

I would recommend joining this school to anyone who wants to learn guitar, especially if it’s from scratch. I honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to learn, or doubted my abilities to learn, but making the decision to give this a shot changed my entire confidence level in playing the guitar. The school made me fall in love with this instrument and now I endeavour to push my limits. The other students are just as encouraging as the teachers, and it’s such an incredible guitar learning atmosphere. Joining will be the best decision you make for yourself!

Having lessons with Auckland Guitar School has made vast improvements to my guitar playing. The content has always been interesting and challenging, and the instructors know how to help make sense of it all. With friendly advice and encouragement I have been able to take my guitar playing where I wanted and having the opportunity to play live in the annual Big Gig provides experience playing in front of a large audience. I highly recommend Auckland Guitar School if you are serious about wanting to learn and/or improve playing guitar.

I have been taking lessons at the Auckland Guitar School for about a year now and it has completely changed my attitude towards learning the guitar. Before I was trying to teach myself and not really getting anywhere, now I walk out each week knowing exactly what to practice and the progress has been awesome! It's such a comfortable and encouraging environment to learn. I constantly get great feedback and tips to achieve personal goals which makes me very excited for my future in music.

I tried to learn Guitar in Intermediate School, but always felt like the classes weren't structured enough, I then joined AGS in 2016. At the school, every lesson has a meaning, where you can walk away and feel like you're improving every week. Dylan is a great teacher because he helps you understand music rather than just play it, and this has led to a quick progression in my skill that I didn't think was possible. With this understanding, I can now look at new music on my own and feel like what was once daunting is possible, if I stop to think about what's written on the page in front of me.

Our son learned with Auckland Guitar School for 4 years. When he started he was new to guitar and music. We were surprised at how quickly his skills developed. His musical interests were encouraged by the school, this helped him develop a real passion for the guitar, which further helped his abilities. The opportunity to perform was great for him. I found the school to be well organised with prompt communication and thorough information. We have had to leave the school due to a change of circumstances, but will always be grateful to the school - we couldn't have asked for a better start in music for our son.

Dylan is a fantastic teacher who will help propel your guitar playing skills to the next stratosphere. He is a phenomenal player but most importantly he knows how to impart his treasure trove of guitar knowledge to students of all abilities. The lessons are always very structured, well thought out and extremely fun. Each class exercise has a purpose. Not only will you rapidly build up a repertoire of cool songs to play, you will also be armed with a variety of techniques and theory knowledge that you can use to continually improve your playing. I always walk away from each lesson feeling inspired and motivated. I would highly recommend the Auckland Guitar School to anyone planning to take up guitar lessons.

Dylan has developed a style of teaching that has been tuned from years of being a professional musician as well as studying at top music schools. He can easily adapt the focus of the lessons to suit the particular goals of each student while developing a solid musical foundation. I would recommend the Auckland Guitar School to everyone, at all levels of experience. It is by far the most effective way to quickly improve your guitar skills, and filter through the most relevant musical theory.

Absolutely fantastic experience for our son Nicholas. He enjoys every bit of it, the classes are 100% student focused. He plays the guitar a lot at home now and feels more confident. End of year concert it is also an amazing addition for the kids to practice their skills in front of a real audience! Dylan is a great teacher and inspires me to keep pushing the boundaries of my guitar playing. His methods of teaching and lesson materials makes learning guitar fun and never a chore. He helps to specifically target areas of playing ability that are weaker and finds material that develops these certain areas. Highly recommended even if you have been playing for years. Dylan can help to take your playing to another level. Very refreshing way of learning guitar.

I joined Auckland Guitar School last year after my 12 yr old son inspired me. He had joined Auckland Guitar School a few weeks prior, and I had this vision that we could play together! And now we do!! Even better my 8 year old son has now joined and has the bug too. Dylan has proven to be a fantastic teacher who clearly has an extremely knowledgeable background and skill in this wonderful instrument. The classes are so much fun, you learn an incredible amount in these lessons, and Dylan and Thomas's style of teaching is suited to all walks of life! You play the latest songs on the charts, along with the good old time classics we all know. I highly recommend Auckland Guitar School, and are now spreading the word to my friends and their children. Its addictive, all three of us never want to miss a class. One thing I notice is my boys and I leave our classes with the biggest smile on our face! Love it! Kira Chilcott

Lessons with Dylan is like learning a new language, as I am so new to this genre of music that he has introduced me to. His playing style is very unique and he has helped me a lot even though jazz is my weak spot. I look forward to each lesson to learn new ways to develop my playing, and what makes it more enjoyable is that he is patient enough to cope with my struggles in jazz guitar/theory. Dylan is a great teacher and musician and I would recommend taking lessons with him :)

My one year at AGS has been the best thing to happen to my guitar. I came in hoping to learn one or two things about musical theory and improvising; I now leave with the confidence that even if I do not find another teacher of the same calibre as Dylan Kay, I will be able to advance my playing. I have learned so many things from Dylan, not only ways by which I can improve my technique and sound, but also various musical concepts and how they can be applied to achieve the effects I want. Most importantly, I have learned how to approach learning new ideas and incorporating them in my play style. Throughout this process, Dylan has been the most encouraging and supportive teacher. His well-structured lessons and his wealth of knowledge have been instrumental in helping me to come away with confidence in my playing. I highly recommend AGS if you want to learn to play music on the guitar.

I reluctantly gave up my lessons recently at the Auckland Guitar School, mainly because my involvement in two music groups did not give me enough time to do justice to the material from the school. However, in the 10 months or so that I was taking lessons, I learned a lot. The lessons were structured in a way that kept up my interest. The first part of most of my lessons focused on building up rhythmical skills, the second on improvisation exercises and third on a useful shared activity with the others in the class, often based on the blues. The teachers, Calum and Thomas were excellent, able to break down the content into manageable chunks and set a realistic pace. The hand-outs were thorough and useful. Should I return to guitar lessons, AGS will be at the top of my list. My thanks to Calum, Thomas and Dylan.

Auckland Guitar School offers top notch guitar training and I would recommend anyone looking to get the fastest results to learn with Dylan. He simply knows what he's doing and if you trust him, you will see results in your guitar playing.

Yay! We found Dylan! We were a bit sad when we had to find a new guitar tutor for my daughter, as we were very happy with the tutor she had. He only taught one day a week and her other activities were all on this day, so it got to hectic. I started emailing tutors in the area as well as talking to friends in the area about where to now. We were referred to Dylan at Auckland Guitar School by a friend. I called Dylan and he responded to my call straight away. We went to see him so he could see where my daughter is at with playing the guitar. What an amazing experience. Friendly, helpful and staight forward is what I like. You don't want someone telling you your child plays brilliantly, but actually they don't. Dylan told her that she needs to practice more and learn to enjoy the instrument. We decided to enrol straight away. She now practices every day. She found a new love for guitar and enjoys playing. She's made new friends (she's in a group of 5) and she's learnt to play with others. We can't rave enough about how happy we are with Auckland Guitar School and how much better my daughter got at playing the guitar. Thanks to my friend who referred us and thanks for Dylan for excellent service.

Lessons with Dylan have not only inspired me but have encouraged me to push my limits and practice more. Dylan chooses songs that are popular or rock. So far since I started with Dylan one term ago our group have learned: Money(Pink Floyd), Thinking out loud(Ed Sheeran), Times like these(Foo Fighters), Hotel California(The Eagles) and some more. Dylan teaches us in a very unique way which is very helpful if we are confused or wanting to improve. I would recommend Auckland Guitar School (Howick) as Dylan is the best guitar tutor I had. Every year the is a BIG GIG where groups or soloists perform on stage some songs. I will definitely continue my guitar progress with Dylan.

Dylan is a is a guitar teacher a a wealth of experience and expertise. He is always thinking of new ways to provide beneficial learning experiences for students, and thus improve their playing. He gets students into small groups, so they can learn from each other and collaborate, as well as getting professional instruction from him. He also runs a monthly 'band session' where students can perform songs, and organises an annual concert for students. My knowledge and playing have progressed quickly and easily thanks to Dylan.

My lessons over seven months with Dylan have surpassed my expectations both in terms of the unique lesson format used at AGS and Dylan's professionalism and expertise as a tutor. Having become stagnant in playing recycled licks and being dissatisfied with my knowledge of music theory, I contacted AGS hoping to become a better musician. I have since improved my knowledge of music in general, not just in a guitar playing context, and feel I have developed better playing skills. I have been introduced to genres of music, such as jazz, which I had not previously been exposed to and have learned practical information from a very seasoned musician. Above all I feel I have gained better skills in practicing the instrument which I never would have gained by myself or from YouTube. I can no longer continue lessons due to relocation but will continue playing with renewed motivation and enthusiasm.

Since commencing lessons with Auckland Guitar School earlier this year as an almost complete beginner, and with very little self-confidence, I have been amazed by what Thomas has supported me to achieve. Not only have I begun to develop my playing skills, I have also managed to gain an understanding of written music, something that was completely alien to me and something I thought was well beyond my level of ability. The most important thing for me though was being able to play in front of someone with whom I could trust and not feel threatened or intimidated. I quickly came to realise that this was never going to be an area of concern at the school as Thomas is incredibly patient and supportive. While students are expected to learn certain songs in order to develop a range of techniques Thomas also recognises the importance of finding out about students' individual music preferences. This has certainly helped to improve my playing and has massively enhanced by playing experience.

Dylan is a fantastic teacher and I've progressed a huge amount in the short time I've been learning from him. My son is also attending after school sessions and is really enjoying learning. He just aced a music test playing his guitar :-)

Best guitar school In New Zealand. I have improved so much over the time i have been there and still am till this day. I would recommend to everyone to come here if they want to vastly improve there guitar skills
