Reviews of Kevin Downing's Guitar School

Kevin Downing took me from being a 'self taught' three chord thrash hit and hope guitarist to being a competent accompanist for my own and others songs. The guitar education I've received has greatly influenced my songwriting and performance - chord knowledge particularly. But more than anything has been the influence he has had on my career, with industry insider information, practical mindsets and ever supportive encouragement. He has a great sense of humour too. You can't go wrong
signing up for lessons. Unless you don't!

Kevin is an excellent guitar and bass teacher. I used to watch videos from YouTube and attempted to teach myself bass but I decided to move to Kevin because I realized I got nowhere with videos. He taught me many things that I have missed and helped me with my bad habits in my bass playing. His lessons are always fun and helpful. There are jam sessions with other students which allows you to experience music in the real world. You get more than what you pay for Kevin's lessons and Palmerston North is extremely lucky for having a musical professional in town.

All the teachers here do an amazing job at making it easy to play guitar. Kevin and the team provide a friendly, individualised learning experience which has seen me advance my guitar playing a long way. I would highly recommend the school to anyone.

Kevin's lessons are outstanding. He is always organised and responsive to questions. He has a clear pathway for you, and can also deviate to focus on what you are interested in. He teaches you to be a musician who plays the guitar, so you really develop your all round musical knowledge.
I've had a few other teachers who were more like part-timers in comparison, they just did random things at each lesson, and sometimes played more than I did. Kevin's approach is totally different, it's grounded in really deep understanding of how to teach and practice music. Kevin also spends time each year going to workshops and learning more, and then sharing all that stuff with his students.
Overall, if you want to learn guitar, go see Kevin sooner rather than later.

I've been studying guitar with Kevin for nearly ten years and have been grateful for the chance to do this. He has always met me at my level and at the same time pushed me to do better than I thought I could do. His approach is encouraging and motivational and has benefitted all aspects of my life, through nurturing my love of all things musical. I would recommend his tutoring with my whole heart. No matter what age you are, what life stage you're at, or what your musical goals are, Kevin will definitely make the learning journey incredibly satisfying and enjoyable.

I have been going to to lessons for some time now. The lessons are relaxed, enjoyable and geared to my pace of learning. The tutors are all encouraging and together create a fantastic team of people to learn from.
There is also plenty of opportunity to extend yourself with the Jam Sessions and the Guitar Forum covers many topics. The 101 Lab Band is a must see event each year that showcases what you can achieve with lessons at Kevin Downing's Guitar School.

I started lessons with Kevin as I was a frustrated mainly self-taught guitarist who was struggling to become the guitarist I wanted to be. My progress was slow, I found it impossible to work out a coherent course of study, and I kept hitting plateaus that I didn’t know how to move past. The sheer volume of educational material available was overwhelming and I did not know what to concentrate on.
A friend of mine had been having lessons with Kevin for some years and recommended him to me. After reading Kevin’s book The Secrets of Successful Practising and his articles in NZ Musician magazine, I realised this was the teacher I’d been looking for!
One thing that impressed me immediately was that Kevin asked me what my goals were. After nine months of lessons, I can already see enormous positive changes in my playing. I’ve made more progress that I imagined was possible and I most definitely could not have done this without his help. Kevin is a great teacher, and a patient, positive, encouraging mentor. His lessons are always moving me closer to my goals, and are interesting with just the right level of challenge.
I thoroughly recommend Kevin to anyone who is serious about learning the guitar and is prepared to put the time and hard work into achieving their goals.

Kevin Downing's Guitar School has an excellence quality of lessons. Comparing the lessons I have received here to my two previous teachers; they are nothing compared to Kevin's. The actual lessons are well suited to anyone's personal learning style and there are other things you can get involved in to help further your studies, such as Jam sessions and an online forum. No matter what your level or your goals these lessons can benefit you.

As a student of Kevin's for several decades I could not imagine learning the guitar without his guidance, knowledge and experience.
Many guitarists have knowledge and experience, many teachers have knowledge and experience, but not many have the ability to coach you as an individual directly and develop your playing in creative and frustration-free ways. Kevin understands not just how to play successfully but understands the mindset required to help you achieve success, he's always thinking about you as a student, planning your progress and looking at a bigger picture where you can play whatever you want to play.
Lessons with Kevin provide you with all the tools to play your desires, structured and professional, his teaching is swift, comprehensive and personal.
Frustration learning an instrument is the quickest way to kill your passion. Kevin knows how to avoid frustration.
Lessons with Kevin changed my life, my playing, all for the better.

I have been with Kevin for 18 months and it has been a blast. The lessons are easy to follow and filled with tips and tricks to make your playing that much easier. Its not all about book work, but also songs and he makes it a great mix. Practise for me now doesnt seem like practise and the improvement I have seen over 18 months is fantastic. He also encourages you to join his jam sessions, which are exactly that, with others of the same ability level as you which are great. I thoroughly recommend Kevin's school.

I have been having guitar lessons with Kevin now for quite some time now and I can honestly say that there is none better. Kevin brings you along at your own pace which gives you time to absorb what you are learning. Having recently had a stroke I can say that he has the patience and the time for me to learn new stuff. Together with the jam sessions I find that it is perfect to consolidate what I have learned.

I highly recommend. I've progressed way further on guitar and bass with Kevin's structured teaching, than I did in ten plus years of mucking around with youtube tutorials. Plus learning to read notation I have found has been invaluable to my playing. Thanks Kevin and Joella

Kevin has taken me from not knowing one end of the guitar from the other to performing regularly in public. His students forget more about the guitar than most players know, and his teaching techniques keep up the interest, of striving towards reaching your potential as a musician.

Kevin Downing's day begins with a powerful mixture of smoothies, mantra meditation, sun salutations and developing a keen awareness of the present moment. Followed by COCAINE.
The song that is, a middling guitar standard by E. Clapton, of mid sixties British blues fame. After many hours of setting up lighting rigs, P.A. gear, modems, satellite alerts, medical teams, paramilitary forces, Mr Downing proceeds to teach the flavor and style of TRUE GUITAR MUSIC to the people of New Zealand.
HE IS the greatest guitar teacher, musical inspiration, technician, author and coach of music . . . ever? Book now, and relocate your psyche into the modern world of SOPS (structural operating procedures) for Modern Guitar. Earplugs are recommended.
