BEST IN TOWN!! I don't consider myself as a fit person and I was dreading my decision to take lessons. I got Steve's reference from my colleague and read good reviews on trip advisor and google. The reviews were impressive but I was still not confident. However, when Steve began to teach us the lessons, I left all the worries behind me. If you are new to surfing and want to learn ABC of it, he's the guy. He is the BEST teacher anyone can get. I am definitely going back to learn more from him.

I took three lessons (level 1 to 3) with Steve together with a friend and I enjoy them all. He provides a somewhat different experience with profound background information and good preparation on the beach before going into the water. This made it diffrent from previous experiences I had with other surf schools as I felt more prepared and secure in the waves. Steve gives useful feedback in the water on your technique and helps you to progress quickly while having fun. I would always come back for another lesson.

I tried the beginner course and had so much fun. Steve is a knowledgeable coach. His teaching was effective, safe, simple and practical. I came with a low expectation of being able to stand up at all and left with a smile and new interest in surfing (yes, I also managed to stand up on the board!). Give it a go, you will not regret it.

I honestly cannot rate Steve highly enough, in our first lesson he managed to get myself and friends standing on the board safely several times. None of us have done any board or water sports so we were super happy with the results. We will definitely be going back here for future lessons. As well as the quality coaching to enable us to stand, our confidence was high from his great surfing/safety knowledge and knew we were in good hands. Can't wait to go back, later bro 🤙🤙

Steve was brilliant with our family. He is very nice, very thorough, teaching us about more about surfing and the ocean than just getting up on the board. The kids were standing very quickly and we left extremely excited about the next time we can hot the waves. We thoroughly recommend Surf Safe.

My daughter age 10 and I had an awesome time. I'd tried surfing before and never really got up - this time I stood up four times and stayed up ! My daughter was up and go from the start of surfing session. Would totally recommend - very safe, patient instructor.

I couldn’t have picked a better place and a better instructor for my first time! I’ve never gone surfing before or any kind of water sports for that matter. If you wanna try it out like me, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Surf Safe. Steve runs the place and is the only instructor. He teaches group and private lessons. My lesson was a bit of a spontaneous one, so my only choice was the 1 on 1 lesson. This turned out to be exactly what i wanted and needed it was worth every penny! If you can swing the 1 on 1 lesson, do it. You learn a lot. I had a ton of time in the water, which I didn’t expect and I had a blast! Steve’s got a great sense of humor and is very encouraging. He knows what he’s doing. 5/5 Great experience and is one of the highlights of my trip to NZ.

This was my first proper one on one lesson with a surf instructor and Steve met all my expectations. Very knowledgeable and give me some real good advice about the water as well as good warm up on beach work beforehand which really helped. Initially Steve wanted to see me in action to establish what my faults were and then work on them both on land and then back into the water. This really helped and significantly improved my stance as well as my efficiency in popping up. Within 3 hours we were catching waves at the front and once confident Steve took me out the back for my first ever experience. I felt more than safe under his supervision. This was an awesome experience and give me the much needed confidence in the water understanding the rips and sets come through. I got everything out of the lesson I wanted and walked away very satisfied with my progress. Steve is also very passionate about surfing especially about the local surf and raising equality between surfing tourists, the community and local surfers. Nice to see his heart is in the right place. Definitely recommend him to my friends for a lesson.

Highest praise for Steve, his ethics and commitment to ensuring that all involved in his lessons have a great time but also have a healthy respect for the environment. Steve took my two kids, aged 9 and 13, for a surfing lesson and had them standing up in no time. Safety is a strong element of his lessons and he even turned away additional business, advising against me joining the lesson as I was carrying an injury. The kids were totally buzzing after their first surf and they are keen to go again. Will definitely get them back in with Steve next time we return to Raglan!

I couldn't have picked up a better coach for my lessons, I took lessons in Ecuador, Bali and Morocco and this one was the best one I could have taken, I did three days course with surf safe, I was struggling for months with the technique and even basics and after these three days I learnt heaps, it was my first time paddling out the back and the experience was amazing, I felt safe and confident. The coach has loads of experience and he teaches really well. highly recommended.

We've booked the lesson just half an hour before it started... coach Steve is really nice and knows what to do. You'll get plenty of time in the water. Before he teaches you the basics on land. Pictures for free which is awesome. Really appreciated it. Definitely book your lesson here!

Did a 2 day course with these guys and it was excellent. The instructor Steve did a fantastic job and we were up and surfing in no time. Steve commented that he does a little more "beach work" (board practice on sand) which might seem a pain but he says it pays off when you get in the water and he was absolutely right. Highly recommended.

I did a five day course with Steve and it was absolutely fantastic. After one day I had already advanced further than students in other surf schools on the beach had. His beach instruction on the sand is very thorough and prepared me to move properly in the waves and control my board. He is very thorough, professional, and has a lot of respect for his students, taking the time to analyze and correct little mistakes before they become ingrained habits. His boards are in excellent condition and he has a wide variety suitable to all skill levels. I would certainly recommend the lessons to people of any experience level and I will certainly return to learn more from him once I have more time to practice and advance.

5 days amazing!!! I took 5 lessons with my boyfriend. In 5 days, Steve learn us to take off, turn and surf green waves. During 5 days we was on small group, never more than 5 people. Always on safety, with good personal advice. He's realy nice. No hésitations, he's the best.

It was my first time surfing and I had so much fun! We were in a small group with a cool and nice teacher. It’s perfect for beginners and you really feel safe out there in the ocean :) I would definitely recommend it.

It was my 1st time out surfing on Saturday and with the good pre-work (time on the sand explaining everything) that Steve gave I was able to stand up on the 1st wave when we got into the water. I would highly recommend him. Thanks for the pictures too. Nice added bonus.

(Translated) From my first day in Raglan, a Canadian advised me to go take a surf lesson at Surf Safe Raglan ... I didn't regret going there that afternoon! I loved it and took 2 more classes afterwards. To start, Steve gives us all the technical and security keys. We go there one step after another and in addition there were only two of us with my travel mate during the lessons (unlike other companies which sometimes offer lessons for 6 to more than 10 people ...!) Steve is adorable and will know how to make your surf lesson a good one! You can go there with your eyes closed. (Original) Dès mon premier jour à Raglan, un canadien m'a conseillé d'aller prendre un cours de surf chez Surf Safe Raglan... Je n'ai pas regretté d'y être allé l'après midi même ! J'ai adoré et j'ai pris 2 autres cours par la suite. Pour débuter, Steve nous donne toutes les clés techniques, et de sécurité. On y va un pas après l'autre et en plus nous n'étions que deux avec ma travel mate pendant les leçons (contrairement aux autres compagnies qui font des cours pour 6 à plus de 10 personnes parfois...!) Steve est adorable et sauras faire de votre leçon de surf un bon moment ! Vous pouvez y aller les yeux fermés.
