I had a lesson and then did a 2 hour wetsuit and board hire and have to say not only is Te Arai a stunning place to learn to surf, but Aotearoa Surf School was professional and assuring to learn how to surf through. Our instructors were approachable, calm and thorough. As someone who isn't 100% confident in the water I felt safe the entire time. I'll definitely be back for more time on the board out there. Thank you for a great experience.

Aotearoa Surf School & Board Hire is always super friendly & helpful. Their lessons and equipment are top notch. Te Arai is so beautiful, such great spot to head for a surf with friends.

Board and swimsuit rental - very chill returns process and reasonable prices. The board we hired was an 8ft foamy and was in beautiful condition, as opposed to some other surf places that give you very worn down tired boards. Would recommend :)

We had a really good private surfing lesson with Jack! My wife and I had a great time. The conditions weren’t ideal when we went but Jack was really helpful - as well as providing training in the day he also gave some tips on next steps for a beginner so that our surfing journey can continue. Would definitely recommend lessons at Aotearoa Surf School and will be going back for more. Te Arai beach is always amazing as well which helps. Only reason not giving 5 stars is because the surf board my wife had was a little too big for her.

Our instructor Tony was so patient and really worked hard as my son battled with the current. Both kids got up standing very quickly and at the end of the lesson were riding the waves in with the biggest smiles on their faces. Such an awesome experience and definitely would both recommend Aotearoa Surf School and will be back surfing with you again. Thank you so much!

This was mine and my partner Mel's first time surfing and we had the greatest time. Staff at the store were welcoming and gave us good tips, our instructors were so patient and made sure we had the right wetsuits and boards. It was a super windy day but they made sure we were all safe. We both caught our first waves. Would definitley recommend 🤟

Such a great experience! There were people of all ages which made everyone feel super included. The instructors Zach and Jack were so awesome , really good instructors. Great service, well run and they were all so kind. Loved it couldn't recommend more!! :)

Highly recommended! We rented surf boards and wet suits which were $40 for the boards and extra $10 for the suit. We had them for 4 hours, therefore the value was great. The drive from the center to the beach was nearby and convenient. The people there were very friendly and accommodating. Provided us with all of the information we needed to have a smooth experience.

If I could give a 10 out of 5 I would. Our family loved it. Really good communication about the course etc. First booking was cancelled due to potential cyclone but rebooking was really easy and moving the payment even though it was already in the process of being refunded due to cancellation was all done by the surf school making it seamless and a super easy change for me. They're really patient with the kids and explain so well including safety. Loved it and highly recommend. Would definitely refer any friends looking to try it out.

Excellent experience. My friends gifted me this lesson and as I feel I’ve transitioned out of the beginner stage (regular surfer for 2-3ft green waves) was looking for some tips to accelerate my surfing. My instructor Oliver was very professional, encouraging and I had a wonderful time and his simple tips during the lesson made a huge difference. Highly recommend a lesson for any stage in your surfing capability. I used my own surfboard and wetsuit but they provide all gear if you don’t have your own. Booking was easy on their website, good communication, easy check- in process.

I have one daughter who is currently in her second term and loves the afternoon surf school. A second child has started this term and loves it as well. So good for building confidence. A great way to introduce the kids to the friendly surf community. Don't think I will ever regret it.

Best surf lesson we have ever had! We booked a private lesson for the two of us and our instructor Tony was very professional and thoroughly explained us everything about the board, the waves, the current and the four possible dangers when surfing and how exactly to avoid them. We felt very safe with his instructions and had tons of fun catching waves. We were also able to hire the boards and wetsuits for two more hours after the lesson and were glad we did so, that way we could practice even more. 🌊 Oh and here is a recommendation for fellow backpackers exploring NZ in a van: Aotearoa Surf School has really great rates for renting boards and wetsuits long-term. So make sure to have some extra space on your roof or the back when choosing a van, it really pays off. 🏄‍♂️

It was a good experience but unusually rough conditions for beginners. However, the instructors did their best to navigate the situation and facilitate. I liked how the female instructor guided me by telling me when to paddle. It was super helpful. As for improvements, I would say that some of the boards were pretty worn down. The ankle strap to the board that I was using kept falling off, so I had to stop pretty often to put it back on. It would also be really nice if we learned about reading the waves before we started in the water. Overall, I had a good experience and I wish I could come back during better conditions.

My daughter absolutely loved what she achieved in 2 days with Lucy and Oliver (instructors)from Aotearoa Surf. I would certainly recommend going with the private lessons as you get the one on one, which is invaluable when having no experience. Che, the owner, is professional and more than happy to address any concerns you may have. Thanks guys for all your hard work. The lessons were a special treat for my daughter. She is stoked (and as parent that is all you wish for). Right, I am going back to having my ear chewed off......haha All the best for the upcoming New Year Lisa

My 7 year old took part in the full day surf camp over 3 days, he really enjoyed it. The weather was a bit average but that didn’t dampen the mood as the instructors modified the class so that the kids each got 1:1 tuition and rotated as the waves were decently sized for that age range. They also played games, went on exploring walks and learnt about surf and beach conditions. He was super pumped (and very tired) at the end of each day, he is very keen to keep up surfing and come back to camp in the future, thanks to Ally and the team for giving the kids such a great, safe experience.

This is the third camp our two boys have been on with Aotearoa Surf. It’s builds not only their skills in surfing but also their independence. They always come away with the best stories of how big the waves were, the waterslide and the great instructors. Memories for life. Thank you team - until next time!

As well as teaching the basics, the tutors were very patient, always encouraging and open to share their own personal tips. Always felt that we were in safe hands. Had a great time with the Surf Sistas and tutors of Aotearoa Surf School! Highly recommend them!

Rented a couple of boards and wetsuits at the weekend. They expertly measured us up and gave us the perfect sizes. They even let us use a soft rack and helped us load the boards onto the roof!!! Amazing service from start to finish! Didn't mind when we came back late as we managed to get lost! Highly recommended and we will be back! A+++++++

It's been an amazing and unforgivable experience for my 9 year old. She had the best time, made new friends and loved all he time in the water. I'm sure she will be back next summer. Highly recommend this Surf Camp. The team and organisation is perfect. We didn't need to worry about anything. I really appreciated the daily updates and photos too.

Had a great first weekend surfing thanks to Aotearoa Surf! Found my lesson on the Saturday very useful to understanding the basics which I then put to use with surfboard hire on the Sunday. Very friendly staff who took the time to help us set up our boards on the roof racks.

We booked a private lesson with a group of friends. It was so much fun, none of us had surfed before and with all of Hannah’s help and encouragement we were all catching waves in no time. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to give surfing a go! We all have the confidence now to get amongst it and keep practicing.

I really enjoyed my session! The instructors were really good with keeping us all together and teaching us properly, but also getting to know all of us and not leaving us alone and helping us a lot until we stood up. I will definitely go back and have more sessions with them!

Our son had a an amazing time. The crew are all heaps of fun and can easily relate to the kids on camp. Great work guys. Such an awesome option for kids looking to stay active and be outdoors during the school holiday period.

I bought two tickets for my daughters to go and surf and bond together my eldest daughter couldn't good I went with my youngest.The coaches Lucy and JAck were very professional and made the 2hours so much fun. My daughter got to stand up several times and came away with a huge smile. Which after what she has been through lately as a father made me so happy. Thank you I highly recommend you guys.

Great surf school, my 7yo did the 3 day holiday programme and it was great. He is now confidently standing up and hasn't stopped asking when he can next go surfing. The coaches were great, very encouraging and helpful. Would highly reccommend :)

We were a group of eight, 3 Adults and 4 children under 10 and Lucy was incredible. They were short staffed as a worker decided not to work that day, and we did need more help, as the water was a bit rough so Adults were helping kids also. Lucy did a great job at trying to get everyone standing by the end of the lesson.

Overall positive experience for my three kids. Just worth being aware that the instructors for the three days were teenagers, which is great to see but not what we'd realised, and the boards sometimes have issues (e.g. one of my boys had one with a hole in the front). Having said that, the instructors had a great attitude and my boys had a wonderful time.

I guess we were there at a busy time but it struck me as odd the surf lesson instructors were mostly kids. The oldest one was 18 and they seemed to lack overview and experience. I think there should be at least one adult instructor, because unfortunately a lady got hurt who had pre-existing conditions and the instructors were oblivious about that because they hadn't asked anything about that during the safety meeting. It's a beautifull place though and we did manage to stand up during surfing which was great.

Despite the wind and the rain, it was an epic experience and we managed to get a tonne of waves! Our wonderful instructor made it super easy. Loved it and hoping to join surf sistas!

The kids had a great time and are really keen to do it again. The team are friendly and helpful. Its probably more accurate to describe it as 1 1/2 hour lesson as 30 mins was spent getting wetsuits and rash tops on everyone but still enjoyable and the kids didn't notice

Good entry level lesson for my daughter who had never surfed. We were on time at 2.30pm and waited till after 3pm for anyone to come. Seemed rushed on the back of the surf camp that was finishing up and unfortunately no wetsuit for my son to use. Lesson still finished on time.... My son's board only had one fin unfortunately. Beautiful beach.

Had a great day out on the surf with Ophelia and the team. Thanks again for showing us how to surf! :) Gear - wetsuit/rashtop could use a rinse tho. Maybe a dunk in some fresh water before handing them back out to the next group, would be nice. Also, some of the leashes needs replacing. Mine kept on coming off in the waves.

Absolute legends! My daughter has attended lessons and surf camp with this crew and every time she has the most amazing experience and comes home full of confidence and smiles (not to mention some wicked new skills). Highly recommend checking these legends out! :)

Hired boards as beginners from these guys for the first time. Quick and easy, very knowledge and helped set up the rack for us to drive the boards down to the beach. Would definitely recommend and use again!

An excellent place to stay and surf! All the staff were helpful and friendly, from check-in with Che and Beth who were always on hand, to our surf lesson with Billy who managed to give our mixed skill group a fun and informative lesson. The beds were extremely comfortable and the views were spectacular. I will be recommending this spot to everyone I know and I can't wait to come back!

My girls (10 & 8) were first time campers and surfers. They had a blast! The staff was really engaging and made them feel at ease. When they weren’t surfing they were participating in camp Olympics, waterslides, skateboarding and archery. The kids were so busy having fun they forgot to miss home. My 8 year old even said she thought 5 nights just wasn’t enough. Both girls left wanting to surf more and to come back to camp again next year. Thank you so much Aotearoa Surf for a really wonderful and memorable experience!

Fantastic company. We turned up and our instructors were teenagers so we were a little surprised but they knew the routine like the back of their hands and we felt safe in the surf with them. They were super helpful but not to the point of being annoying. They pushed us into some waves and then let us practise ourselves while giving out pointers and asking if we wanted another push. We had such good fun and the two hours went by so fast. At the same time we were pretty exhausted after the two hours and ready for a wine. Will be back for sure! Thanks guys!

Got some good local insight from the surf shop operator and he even taught us how to load 5 surf boards on the car!! Excellent place for beginners and experienced riders to drop in hire gear and get the surf report!

Really easy to book. The instructions were straight forward and within an hour I was standing up on the board. The instructor Lee was also friendly and good at communicating. Would definitely recommend!

Had a great time learning to surf, it was my first time and the lesson went great, got up a bunch of times and the gang teaching was very helpful and nice, as well as the staff in the surf shop! Cool beach as well!

I can not recommend Aotearoa Surf school enough! Even before I booked, I was having issues sorting my booking (I'm terrible with tech for my age) and Che was super helpful and quick to email me back on how to resolve the issues. I was quite hesitant and anxious to attend the lesson as I had a bad first experience the day before with another surf school. Before the Lesson: I was greeted by Che and the awesome receptionist in the surf shop, who reassured me that despite my bad previous experience, this will be fun and you will be well attended to by the three staff. I then arrived at the lesson near the car park and the instructors (can't remember all their names sorry!) were so quick to fix me up with a well fitting wetsuit and answer any questions that our group may have had. We then had a safety briefing which was super informative and worth listening to as the instructors were really engaging with the group and you can tell they actually enjoyed their job. The Lesson: Just before heading out we all got a surfboard that suited us and were taught how to correctly fit a leash, the two ways of 'popping up', the basic names of the board and what to do/expect in the water. We then hit the waves and the instructors were there to support you if you wanted it and gave you advice on how to improve and cheered you on when standing up! Seriously the staff/encouragement makes all the difference I was able to stand up multiple times by the end of the lesson. The Staff: All the instructors/staff I spoke to at the surf school were so lovely to chat to and didn't make you feel any less for being a beginner. Conclusion: - Highly recommended especially if you're nervous about starting out - Amazing staff who WILL support you - Worth the money

Hi I am Jordan and I went to the last camp and I thought it was a very positive place. All the instructors were very helpfull and nice not just to me but to everyone. I liked how all the instructors gave you incorigment when you cought a wave and even when you fell off you still felt good and proud. My favourite part of the camp was getting to hang out with the instructors also some of the kids. I also made alot of friends and by the end of the camp I pritty much new everyone there. So that is why I give this camp a five star rating. Thanks Aotearoa surf for making this posible and for letting the kids have lodes of fun. Jordan Bouvet

Had an awesome time at Te Arai beach having a 2 hours group lesson. Instructors were fantastic and so helpful. Learnt some new tricks and spend longer on my board :) Would recommend and will also do again!! First time to this beach and it's stunning.

Had a fantastic stay over New Years! I had a Christmas present of a one on one surf lesson gifted to me which was cut short by a shark siting. They were so cool at the place and let me have another lesson the following day free of charge. The tipi was awesome, glamping to the max. The only 1 thing I’d suggest would be a small fridge in the tipis, it would great for cooling down the beers. Other than that the accomodation and the owners were really great. Highly recommend.

Really good hiring experience! We hired a paddle board for 4 hours to use around Managawhai, and were really impressed with the super friendly service and easy hirage. Would definitely recommend :)

My brother and I wanted to check out Forestry Beach and go for a paddle. Aotearoa Surf had everything we needed, including a soft roof rack and the right directions to get the beach. Very friendly and helpful. Was a great day.

It was a frist time for both of our children going to this camp - they had such an amazing time and great fun on the waves and making new friends. We will be sending kids there every year from now on!!!!

There is nothing like being out in the ocean to feel absorbed by nature, and it was so freeing to look up and be surrounded by it’s great expanse. When I was out on the water, I found it hard to think about anything else, offering my mind a much needed break. The Women’s Wellness Weekend at Te Arai was, for me, the biggest silver lining in this otherwise crazy year. Awesome surf camp! My 13 year old son attended surf camp this January for the second year and the first thing he said again when he got home was ‘can I go again’ he loved the whole thing. It was awesome as a parent to get daily updates of what the children had been doing. Photos as well! It was lovely parents got invited to come along to a surf comp and could see the skills our children had learnt Get professional surfers who really enjoy teaching children to get out and enioy NZ’s best playground! Would totally recommend Aotearoa Surf My son is looking forward to next summer Thank you so much!!!

My two daughters did the give it a go surf day Sun 6 Oct never having done Surfing before. Both absolutely loved it. Very well organised, great communication before the day and even on the day, great leaders and very friendly. We drove up from Greenlane for this and totally enjoyed the whole day. If we lived a lot closer would bring my girls back all the time. Thanks Louise

Amazing school holidays for kids with Aotearoa Surf School !!!!!!! My kids said THE BEST” School holiday camp of 4 days. It was really nice organized, the kids did paddle board, surf at different beaches, snorkeling, kayaking, sliding on the sand dune...what a program. My girls of 12 and 9 really enjoyed ! It will be a classic of the school holiday. Many thanks team you did a amazing job !

Booked the two kids in for a session, they had a ball and really enjoyed themselves. Will definitely book another session when we are back up at Mangawhai.

First visit, the team were great, looked after our 10 year old and friend. Both stood up and rode waves on their first lesson. The surfing lessons are great. I did a one on one lesson. I have done other lessons before in Omaha and Christchurch but have never learnt so much in a single lesson. The instructors were super friendly and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend them to anyone who is interested in surfing. Te Arai Point is stunning.

Awesome private lesson with Josh for my two sons who are building into intermediate level. The entire process of booking through in water and of session was seamless. Josh was an awesome instructor - patient and massively experienced. The boys came out of the water so fired up to surf more! The waves were huge and it was heaps of fun.

Booked my first lesson on 30.10.2021 at 11AM. Having never surfed before i was already able to stand after the first two hours of having the lessons provided! Big thumbs up to the crew! 10/10 recommend!

My sister and I had a fabulous experience at Aotearoa Surf School. We had fabulous young and passionate instructors who were highly professional throughout our lesson. Great energy from the entire team at Aotearoa Surf we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Loved that it was catered to all ages. Definitely made us want to come back and continue surfing. This is definitely the place to go 100%.

Such good value for money. The weather and waves were perfect and the instructions easy to follow. Loved how the instructors moved seemlessly amongst the group to ensure every one was both enjoying the experience and learning from it. Awesome to be able to ride a few waves in just two hours from knowing nothing! Only downside was wetsuits come in all shapes and sizes but they don't seem to have much variety there, if you have your own, definitely take it.

Stayed at Te Arai glamping and booked a one on one surfing sesh to strengthen my surfing technique and learn new strategies. My coach gave professional feedback that made a lot of sense, a little tweak here and there and I am excited to catch the next wave and practice them. Offie (unsure of spelling) was fascinating and inspiring to watch in the water too. Thanks for the experience! Also, our stay at the camp grounds was dreamy, the spectacular morning view was unbeatable! Loved the golden pheasants and the tropical garden. My 10 year old son had a lesson last weekend. He was so excited to finally get out and do something other than walking and exploring around out neighbourhood . The team were professional and followed COVID guidelines. We had an awesome day out took a picnic and had a great day in the beach. Thanks again!

Booked a 2 hour beginner lesson here(Te Arai). Had Greg as our instructor. Went from knowing nothing about surfing to being able to pop up by the end of the lesson. He's really good at breaking down the technique, and with providing feedback during the training. Bought the photo package and got some really nice clicks. Overall was great fun and had a fantastic time. Will definitely try to be back.

My 6 year old, who had never surfed before, just attended a 4 day Learn to Surf programme and absolutely loved it! The instructors were friendly, patient and really knew how to get the kids motivated and surfing. I highly recommend these guys, it's an enjoyable time at a great location.

Can’t rate Aotearoa Surf School enough! I’d wanted to get into surfing for years after a few tries overseas (4/5 years ago) and my partner ALWAYS out on the water. I wanted to get out the car and join in, but I was far too scared. Then I saw Surf Sistas advertised and knew that was what I needed to gain some confidence and make a start. A lovely group of like minded girls and some great encouragement and support from the amazing team over a month was exactly what I needed. I was so nervous my first lesson but every time one of us stood up everyone cheered and it was such a great atmosphere. Since my final lesson I’ve bought a board and now trying to get in the water and practice as much as possible. I’m far from good but considering you wouldn’t get me past my knees before I’m pretty proud of myself! All the staff are super friendly and the surf shops great too. Thanks Aotearoa Surf School!

Booked a 2h beginner surfing lesson. got lots of help and subjections. when I was struggling the tutors were able to tell ezactly what I neded to do and by the end of the lesson I was confdently catching waves and starting to stand up on the board.

My 6 year old attended a 2 day surf camp (day only) at the end of 2020. He had the best time on day 1 and could not wait to get back the next day. He really enjoyed the programme, the instructors and the fact he was up standing on the board "surfing" quite quickly. He turned 7 a couple of weeks later and he only had 1 request... a new surf board and more lessons! Che and his team are just fantastic, we live locally so are very excited for more camps and the fact we can head back at anytime for more lessons now he has a new board. I hired a wetsuit and surfboard for a full day. They also provide soft racks if you don’t have any way of transporting your board down. Super friendly service and clear, easy instructions on how to return your gear. I came back a few days later for a two hour surf lesson. Olly was friendly, knowledgeable and gave me plenty of feedback and tips that greatly improved my surfing. Definitely recommended!

we definitely had a nice class trip. We stay there for two nights, and the view of accommodation is awesome, kitchen is very clean, bathrooms as well, they still have outside shower part to wash off the sand. As for surfing class, the coaches are very professional and friendly, we really enjoyed surfing there. We definitely will come back.

The surf instruction caters to any level of experience and is personalized, comprehensive, and fun. Our private lesson instructor was able to effectively coach me alongside my 8 year old daughter ensuring we both had surfing success. An awesome experience all around. We will definitely be back!

We had an awesome private surf lesson with Aotearoa Surf! Kiana was a great instructor - she worked with us to help us catch some beautiful waves, and helped us understand basic etiquette out there. The gear worked well, and the beach at Te Arai is a hidden gem.

This is the second year we’ve taken our kid’s and friends for a birthday party with the crew at Aotearoa Surf School. It’s awesome. The kids were all standing by the end of the lesson and had a blast. Easy to book, clear instructions, great team who are awesome with kids. The kids came away on top of the world having had a great time.

I had an excellent lesson with Olly today. As a complete beginner I’d had a few lessons elsewhere before but couldn’t get onto my feet. Olly showed me some alternative techniques and they worked. A great result. I’d definitely recommend Aotearoa Surf.

I absolutely loved learning with Aotearoa surf school everyone was so lovely! All of the instructors were amazing; Ollie, Hannah and Lee we had a couple times and they were so sweet. It’s a good set up, no need to pick your boards up before hand, just turn up at the beach and you’re ready to go! Che is so passionate about surfing and always willing to help with any questions or even if you simply stop in for a coffee- he’s the man. 🙏🏻 Honestly cannot recommended enough. If you’re a woman worried about stepping out of your comfort zone, these are the guys to do it with. They also have a very active FB page and you can even find others that are likely driving up from Auckland whom may want to carpool- which makes the journey a little better. ☺️ Definitely want to encourage as many women to do the surf sisters as possible, so much fun, such lovely staff, so much knowledge and you definitely feel like you walk away each time having learnt something new. 👏

My daughter and I attended the surf school a week ago and it was the highlight of our summer holidays. They told me that they would guarantee that I would stand and ride a wave, by the end of the lesson, and to be honest I was skeptical as I am a 38yr old man, with a spinal fusion, who hasn't surfed in 15 years, however, within an hour I was not only standing, but I was riding wave after wave back to the beach! The crew were amazing, the way they teach and support you is fantastic. The experience and confidence from each instructor is adsorbed by the whole group and results in an epic experience. Highly recommend to anyone from an absolute beginner to and oldie trying to relive their youth, like me :). Thank you so much Che and the team.

Our surf instructors were super knowledgeable and helpful. Their Ques for teaching how to pop before getting in the water were extremely good. Ollie even gave us some more advanced things to work on/try once we had the pop down pack. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting to try surfing.

I just loved the two lessons I had this weekend. Both group lessons and the first, a big group was with Ollie, Nathan and Hannah - all excellent. The second was a tiny group - actually just two of us, but we had an absolute blast at Mangawhai Heads and I'd like to say I really rate Ollie as a coach, what a smooth supple mover when he's demonstrating things, and just always has a smile on his face. He is also very observant and isolates points for improvement, while being very encouraging at all times.

My son and his cousin had an awesome time out in the surf with Ollie today. Very instructive and enabled the kids to confidently begin catching a few waves. Our son had never surfed before but was standing on his feet within 15min. Highly recommended, awesome place!! Will be back again for our next holiday!

Such an awesome experience! I don’t know why we waited so long to give surfing a go?!?! Myself (36yrs old) and my husband (40yrs old) both loved it and got some great tips and instruction from Cam. I loved Aotearoa surf club I always wanted to learn how to surf and didn’t know how to start. The woman’s only surf was a great confidence booster for me the instructors were so helpful and understanding when I was struggling to pop up but eventually got the hang of things and was so much fun. Aotearoa Surf were incredible! I learned to surf for my 21st birthday and after ONE LESSON with them I am hooked! My instructor Ben, who was friendly, motivating and so passionate about surfing took his job very seriously. By the end of only 2 hours I knew the safety rules of the sea, I got up on a softboard several times and then up on a hardboard on green waves, again several times. THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME EVER ON A SURFBOARD! Incredible people! Incredible service! Their prices and specials are so reasonable and accommodating. I got a bargain! I had so much fun :) Definitely worth it!

We had a great morning at Te Arai beach taking a surf lesson with Kiara. She was a good instructor and had us riding waves out the back in the first hour of the lesson. We learned heaps, gained some confidence and are excited to go out on our own.

They all had a great fun and loved surfing!!They said the food was awesome, staffs were friendly, the accomodation was much cleaner and nicer than expectedly you. It's great, I went to my first surf sistas lesson as a complete beginner, learning to surf has always been a life long dream. With their boards and teaching I was up and standing regularly in the first lesson. I was so thrilled!! I have since hired a board to practice, and after chatting with Chè brought myself my first board which allows me to practice locally. Following Chès advice I brought a foamie and I have no regrets, its prefect for me at our local Orewa beach, I was up and standing easily. When I am ready to upgrade to a hardboard I have no hesitation in heading back for their experience and expertise in selecting the right board for me.

Che and his team of instructors are an awesome friendly group. Excellent communication and updates throughout the five days. Both my girls loved every minute of camp and made so many friends they are looking forward to the next one.

My sister and I had such a ball with the team at Aotearoa Surf yesterday at Te Arai! The team was so fun and they provided a great learning environment. We had a great beginner’s group lesson. Instructors were friendly, patient and engaging with a good staff to student ratio. Local knowledge was on point - got a text on the morning saying to meet at a neighbouring beach as conditions were better there. We’d recommend extending board hire by a couple of hours to get cement your learnings.

Great family experience! The fout of us, including two teengage boys had a great time! The friendly instructors ensured we had great fun surfing some waves (or being washed out!) while also being safe in the water.

Our kids attended the October 2020 Surf Camp (2) as complete beginners, and had a superb time. It was brilliant to see both up & surfing happily when we visited on Day 4. Lots of activities, fun & good food the kids said. We really appreciated the daily update emails & photos.

Fantastic friendly instructors get everyone improving with each lesson. Gear available for hire is great quality with suitable boards even for complete beginners. Each time I've been here regardless of conditions before the end of the lesson everyone is standing up and enjoying their time in the water regardless of how big or small the waves are.

Very awesome people to deal with, instructors made the day run smooth and they were super easy to understand and follow. They had the whole class standing up on the boards and riding waves before the end of the session. Would 100% recommend this to others who would like to learn to surf or to just have a go.

Beginner surf course for 2x 14y/o's. They had a great time and learnt the basics that will keep them surfing for as long as they want. Friendly easy going staff and good set up at the beach. We rented some extra boards too. Highly recommend.

These guys are great starting with Hannah who was awesome to deal with in the office and then the team doing the lessons. All very professional. My only suggestion is that when you buy multiple passes and you are going to lessons post #1 that you can somehow get split away from all the newbies. Otherwise you repeat the H&S and ground exercises over and over again. These are obviously important but once you have done them a couple of time they are redundant and you would be getting greater value in the water.

Great surfschool! I’ve been there twice, first time with two friends and the second time with a bigger group. The booking and communication was super easy and we all really enjoyed the lessons! Not only great to get a lesson but also easy to hire a board and wetsuits! Would definitely recommend to everyone who wants to surf!

A spur of the moment decision to join the Aotearoa Surf School 'Surf Sistas' four week course has definitely been one of the best things I have done this year. A gift for my mind, body and spirit. Great fun, supportive and enthusiastic instructors, quality gear (wetsuit and board) and Te Arai Point is an absolutely beautiful spot.

My 13 year old son had a 2hr group lesson. He thoroughly enjoyed himself. What I liked about it was to see that there was a very balanced approach of teaching some techniques, then time to give these a try and then more teaching before the next practice. Also, since it was a fairly big group, it was nice to have 2 instructors. Thank you!

We had a private lesson with Steve, awesome coach. He was able to explain everything for us in ways we'd understand, and gave us feedback and pointers when we needed it. He wasn't overly pushy and let us get a feel for things. We also got the extra time which was worth it. We were tired, but it gave us a chance to relax for a bit, then go back out and keep progressing. I'd suggest going as early as you can before the beach gets crowded Thanks again guys!

My 2 kids and I had a great lesson. Oliver worked really hard to try and remedy some bad technique my kids had picked up (and also had to manage their attitude while he did it!). He worked with me to work out a pop up that I could manage, given my old bones and lack of flexibility. I really appreciated his patience and his enthusiasm.

The team were fantastic! We were a bunch of newbies and quite nervous about surfing, but everyone was so welcoming and supportive, and made the process fun. So fun, in fact, at least two of us are keen to try again! Thanks guys for a memorable birthday!

Had a great group lesson with Cam and Ollie this morning and did the extra 2 hours board rental, so worth it to work on what you earn in the lesson. We signed up our 7-year-old for the surfing workshop in the holidays and he completely fell in love with surfing!! The beach was beautiful, the staff were so helpful and professional and the set up is awesome!! We've booked ourselves into a private lesson and can't wait!! Thanks so much guys!!

Che and the crew are amazing!! My Daughter went once for a lesson and was straight up standing and hooked on surfing 🤩 The team are always so positive and encouraging towards everyone. The give it a go surfing day is a must!!!

Did a surfing lesson with them last weekend and went from not being able to balance at all on a practice board to being able to stand up and catch a couple of breaking waves. I also went again the following weekend and hired their equipment do keep practicing and was able to progress even further. Very happy with their observations and explanations of what to do and how to do it, throughout the class.

Hired paddle boards there, and it turned out the picking up place was quite far from the beach. You gotta allow at least half hour during your two hour sessions for collecting and returning, otherwise pay extra $10 each to extend your hours. And we’ve been nagged about booking via the discount web which popped out first for online research. Well forget about all above things, paddle boarding itself was really fun.

Joined the Surfsistas programme and loving the chance to learn how to surf with a fantastic group of women. Lee has been awesome as an instructor, and Che’s enthusiasm is pretty contagious. Great location as well - plenty of space to get wave time during the lessons.

Fantastic experience today with Kiana who took me through all the basics and talked through how to read the waves and conditions. I would thoroughly recommend anyone learning or not familiar with Te Arai to book a lesson! Great value. Kiana is an excellent communicator and I learnt so much - it has set me up for longboard nirvana!

Excellent surf lesson,even tho it was a group booking, we had an instructor for the 2 off us. Managed to get up on the board,several times which was very satisfying. Good base,afterwards it's on you to rent and keep practicing.

Learning to Surf with Che and the Team has been the best thing for our kids and ourselves. We keep coming back for more and get better each time thanks to the great coaches. I highly recommend anyone who wants to try surfing to book a lesson with them and get into it.

Our teenage sons had a private 2 hr lesson with Andrew which was very much worth paying a little extra. The boys were quickly able to get up on their boards, so during the second half of their lesson Andrew took them out the back to catch bigger waves. This was great as it meant we got real value for money. Andrew could have just carried on going over the basics with them but instead they now have the confidence to go to the next level. First time customer and I will definitely be returning there. My friends and I hired wet suits, the quality of the suit was great and the price ($15 for 2hrs) was really good value too. The owner was really pleasant to deal with and he got me a setup with a wetsuit really quickly. They have a cool shop with boards, suits, merch and even big buckets, just in case you forgot to bring one from home - really good idea! Highly recommend hiring your gear from here, affordable prices and great service.

Hired boards and wetsuits today and the process couldn’t have been easier! Super friendly and really good value as well as giving us a heads up on the best places to go surfing- way closer and more suitable then the original spot I’d planned. Guttered I wasn’t aware of the accomodation here or I would’ve come to stay in the eco pods- I’ll be back in future for sure. Cheers!

The most amazing night spent glamping in the teepee at Aotearoa Surf School! In its own secluded area so you feel completely alone to enjoy the views of forest & ocean, while still being close to the well equipped amenities. The night sky is endless out here too. Spotlessly clean, comfy bed, power to run the fan & charge the phone, soft towels and strong showers, it’s a little slice of paradise that deserves more than 1 night to really appreciate. My 2 boys spend 4 days learning about ocean safety and learning how to surf, they have an absolute ball. Dom came home with a trophy for surfer of the day. Both boys have learnt so much from Aotearoa Surf School and we thank you very much!!

So much fun, a great family day out, we were all extremely pleased with our lesson, each one of us got delivered the skills needed to help our level and some old bad habits got sorted too!, best of all we all got to ride many fun waves. Surf camp was great. Loved TeArai point beach. All the coaches were friendly,fun,knowledgeable,caring and made me feel safe and happy. Food was good,puddings were the best. Our daughter joined the after school programme for kids and she loved it. The team does an amazing job to make the kids comfortable in the waves and to provide the required surfig skills.

Over the past 12months my son has had a 2hr surf lesson, attended the 4 day holiday program and the 5 night camp. I cant say how impressed we have been in all of the above, from how awesome Che & the instructors are, how much he has learnt and the total enjoyment he has had. A learn-to-surf program that is entirely achievable, affordable (and highly enjoyable!) for Aucklanders and North Shore ladies. I quickly gained confidence in Te Arai's surf under Lee and Kiana's calm guidance. Lee made it so easy to understand the steps of reading the water, paddling, catching the wave, then popping up to ride the swell. The best outcome was connecting with a bunch of other 'Sistas' that I now surf regularly with.

My 8 year son jumped in on one of the kids 5 day summer camp surfing lessons and he had the best time! The guys that took the lesson were fun, motivating and supported the kids 100% in the water. The only bad thing for us was that we had to go home and couldn't sign our son up for the full 5 days. Aotearoa surf school gave my son more confidence in the water while highlighting the importance of being safe. We will definitely be back next summer, if not before! Excellent! I had been for a lesson at Muriwai and enjoyed it, but Aotearoa Surf out at Te Arai was amazing! I'm a teacher so I recognise and appreciate when someone is a skilled teacher. Che was fantastic, so much energy and passion, he kept things fun and easy to understand. The lesson was structured so that everything was explicitly explained, demonstrated, practiced and applied in the water with individual support and feedback on how to keep improving. I learnt so much and had a blast, can't wait to get back out there!

Just wanted to take the time to say what a great experience I had on my 2 hr private lesson with Andrew. Andrew was superb and adjusted his teaching to adapt to me and by the 1.5hr mark had me standing up on the board pretty consistently. Highly recommend these guys

Had my staff at Mangawhai for the weekend, none of them had surfed before so we decided to grab some boards. Che and the team were very friendly and helpful from the first phone call through to pick up and drop off and setting us up with the right gear. Brilliant service from the team. He got the double kayak out for us and lent us some roof racks for free. He also told us where to go which was great as we have never been to the area. To top it off he helped pick a new hat for my husband 10/10 experience and will definitely be going back again

Awesome place to learn to surf and the staff were pretty good. As constructive criticism I would recommend the owner checks how he communicates with staff as we definitely picked up on this during our visit and it was a slight downer on what was otherwise an epic day!

Aotearoa Surf provided great communication via email and even better products, I was given a brand new board, a brand new leg rope and some wax, a great experience all round! Thankful that they had more than just foam boards too, providing me with a huge variety to choose from, as it has been difficult to hire anything other than foamies with other companies during my NZ trip!

We were holidaying at Mangawhai Heads. Che made the whole experience very easy. We hired 2x single and 1x double kayak for 2 days. They dropped off 9 am and picked up Kayaks 9am two days later. Life jackets, paddles and delivery all included in the price. Really good value for money. Just do it you wont regret it.

Very good place to go to. I've been to other surfing places such as waipu cove beach and whangamata beach but this is far and perfect one for beginners and other levels. Aotearoa surf school provides good services for everything that you need as a surfer. Just visit them with nothing and you will get everything you need as they will provide everything, stuff like surfboard and wetsuit hiring. No car roof racks? no problem they also provide you with a portable soft car roof racks so you can take your surfboards to the beach. Lastly, I will definitely come back again and again. Thank you

Did the SoulSisters 4 week programme and can highly recommend it. Che and his team were great. I'd done a few lessons before but Che's were next level, much better than the others. Was fab surfing with a great bunch of ladies and I always felt safe. He even had us riding green waves!

I've done 2HR surf lesson from others but they didn't teach much. I couldn't stand on surf board more than twice. Compare to them, Aotearoa Surf School taught me everything step by step and I found real fun of Surfing. Look for a man called Ben, he is a really good instructor.

I joined the Surf Sistas throughout November 2019 and February 2020. Throughout November I struggled to get up on the board, but I still loved going and learnt so much about technique from the tutors. So I decided to give it another go, and signed up for the February program, this time something just clicked, and with the tutors help I was standing up over and over again. We organised a private lesson for 4 friends kids and it was really easy to organise and plan given they had a full holiday programme happening at the same time. Seems to have lots of top notch instructors. The kids were all up within minutes and they were all blown away at the level of expertise and personality of the instructors. My 12 year old son enjoyed the 6 day surf camp at Mangawhai/Te Arai immensely. The camp seemed very well organised. And of course the scenery and awesome beaches here in Mangawhai help too! My son massively improved on his surfing and had a great time with all the other activities, yoga, campfires, waterslide etc. Coaches are really good at Aotearoa Surf, helpful, a lot of fun and devoted. Communication with Che is always clear, direct and quick. We had daily updates and lots of photos of happy kids on surfboards. Che and Ben and all coaches really outdid themselves with this camp. Special mention for Harry for being chosen best coach by the kids!

Great experience, they know their stuff and even when I was quietly having a little panic inside at one stage I felt like I was in good hands. Even though I had already ventured out on my SUP a few times on my own I definitely walked away from my lesson with some really good tips that in hindsight I really needed to know from the beginning so yeah big ups and cheers for the lesson!

We hired boards and gear off book me and the guy who was running the business was really awesome. We only had it for a 2 hour slot but he gave us a half a day which made a huge difference. He even came out and had a quick surf with us and gave a few pointers
