Reviews of Hard To Find Books
F.
The people running this place know their books all right, and they have collected a great amount of rare stuff. Maybe if they kept their prices lower, they would sell more. But who am I to talk without the advice of an online survey?
K.
Lovely helpful staff. Check online, as the Dunedin store usually has what you want in stock, but you are able to order the book you want in person in the Auckland store.
J.
One of my favourite spots in the city. If you enjoy losing yourself for hours rummaging through all kinds of books and maybe finding a few bargains this is a perfect place for you too. This old house holds books on all subjects, from the new to the old to the weird. Children's books, literature, technical, sci-fi, occult, spirituality, comic books and a huge collection of national geographic magazines, topped off by a huge section of New Zealand specific bibliography.
You can also find books in a variety of languages, if that's your thing.
The staff are lovely and will surely help you on your quest for that book you are looking for.
My only complaint is that time seems to disappear every time I go inside.
This is what you'd want a library to be. Love it.
B.
This book store has been in Onehunga for as long as I can remember and is one of Auckland’s iconic second hand bookstores. Even the store layout is iconic with old wooden floors little hidden staircase’s and every kind of book you that you can imagine. It’s worth visiting here just for the experience.
J.
Great place to shop for second hand books, fair prices and a good range of Non Fiction and Fiction titles. Great range of New Zealand historical books.
Special thanks to Bren and Shalon for helping out with online purchases
from the Dunedin branch and excellent professional service at all times.
N.
I was amazed when I found this place! The rush of excitement when I stepped in was real! They have a wide range of books available; I ended up buying 14 books. Probably the biggest book haul for me ever. And the layout and atmosphere of the place is just beautiful. It's a bookworm's paradise.
F.
It was really hard to find! Opposite from St Benedict's Catholic Church. It's an old nunnery converted into a book store! Really amazing place. Still has the lectern in the chapel and has a wide range of books. Prices are quite reasonable. It also has a Patron Saint!
J.
A large and well organised second hand book store that I've been meaning to get to for ages.
I'm certainly glad I did!!
The books are mainly in very good condition & the staff helpful.
They have a no bags policy in the store, so just leave those at the front desk.
A.
Hard To Find Books are one of the most amazing shops in Auckland. I was taking photos in the shop for my university project and the staff was very friendly, I saw a lot of valuable books and I will definitely go back to read many interesting books there.
D.
Super helpful, knowledgeable staff and good prices for books. Extensive collection. Could have stayed all day. A gem of a place.
M.
Wow, I love this book shop. Each room is filled with the adventures of a good find. Found some old favorites and picked up a few new ones. Love this gem of a place. Book treasure hunters delight.
A.
Love the place if you love old and used books, such great people who genuinely enjoy books
S.
Book lovers dream! Huge selection of books on every topic imaginable, and one of the biggest range of sci/fi fantasy books I've seen anywhere.
E.
Beautiful building. Loaded with books. However you need to lock up your handbag as they don't allow them in store. They also cannot tell you what is in stock or where the book may be. Some sections have books out of the shelves, so you really need to hunt for books. Books in the same series differed in price, so varied a few dollars between. Left feeling disappointed as the one book we went in for may have or may not have been available (plus $4 parking). If you have the time to hunt and the patience you could very well find a great book or series.
H.
Very interesting secondhand book store! Worth a visit!
s.
This has to be one of the best book shops I have visited in the world so far. Huge selection of used but great condition books. Found some absolute gems at a very good price.
M.
Wasn't sure what to expect when I visited this book store yesterday but was pleasantly surprised to find that it had PLENTY of books that I wanted to buy (loved that there were a lot of non-fiction books which I prefer over fiction). Ended up spending close to 2 hours browsing the shelves and discovered some titles that I'd been looking at purchasing online. Many books in near-new condition and prices were very reasonable compared to some other second-hand book stores. Staff were lovely and talkative too. Was good to learn that you can see the catalogue for the Dunedin store which is apparently bigger online, make a purchase and the books will be delivered to the Auckland store. Will definitely be going back!
J.
Being a book lover makes this a good place to visit in Auckland Central. A reasonably large collection of books arranged to make browsing easier. It got a few rooms so it takes a bit of wandering to work out what's where regardless but that's part of the fun!
R.
One of the biggest and oldest second hand bookshops in New Zealand. Outstanding stock.
A.
I can spend the whole day here. So many books, so little time. Very helpful staff
S.
My Happy Place. It can be overwhelming so I suggest picking a topic or bookshelf and concentrate on that one area. Then change to a new spot next visit.
I was surprised to discover they had two copies of my father's book - the staff were quickly able to arrange for one to be sent up from the Dunedin store for me.
With regards to carparking, it can be a challenge so be patient and keep your eyes peeled.
N.
Best book shop in Auckland. A huge variety with an underrated selection of comic books and sci fi novels
K.
Our family adores this shop. So mysterious and always find a book for 5 we've been looking for.
M.
Great second-hand book shop with plenty of variety and some hidden gems. They were more than happy to check for a book over the phone and put it aside for me to collect later. Very friendly people!
k.
Such a cool place, the national geographic bookshelf is pretty cool.
A.
A bibliophile’s paradise in this part of Auckland. You can also browse their collection online and have it delivered to you for a minimal fee. But then again, who would not want to drop by this place and be amazed on how many collections they have both old and new?
C.
A wonderful place to start your reading adventures and explorations. I loved the diverse and plentiful selection 👍✨
Bought a wonderful book on cultural fables with beautiful illustrations that are a delightful visual feast!!
A.
great place with a great range of books! the prices are generally reasonable too and depend on the quality/rarity of the book.
i've found that they can be a bit slack at contacting you when you inquire about something. i asked if they could get back to me about whether they had some books in stock/when they got them in and i never got a response. not a big deal as it gives me an excuse to peruse the shelves myself but can be frustrating when trying to locate a specific book.
H.
When I had heard they had moved into the area I trembled. It being in Onehunga was the only thing that saved me from spending large amounts of money there. Huge range of titles, helpful friendly staff, and just the right ambience for a bibliophile - a splendid old house and plenty of comfortable seats. If they did coffee and had a writing desk I would never leave and I would be broke into the bargain.
A.
Cute little spot and really friendly staff/owners. Highly recommend 😊
O.
Exceptional customer service! Lady on the phone in Auckland store went out of the way to locate a book in the Dunedin store, took the order over the phone and now I have the book with me in a matter of few days. Honestly I was not expecting to find this book. Many thanks and keep it up.
B.
Well curated shop with books ranging from budget to collectable. Some books also available online. Reasonable street parking available, main users being those attending mass at St Benedicts.
B.
Well curated store, a lot of work done over lockdown to restock shelves.
R.
Good book store a lot of categories
L.
This book shop is gorgeous!!! Also the books are very cheap.
L.
In Auckland, this is one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon. My latest purchase was through their online store and I am very happy with the transaction. The books arrived swiftly and were in the condition just as described on website. Would use again.
D.
Actually not that hard to find and an amazing treasure trove of books on pretty much any topic imaginable.
W.
Still the same lovely shop that I remember when it was in Onehunga.
A.
Honestly, I love this store ❤❤ has most of the books that I enjoy reading. It's really cheap. Good quality too for a second hand store. Will be the only store I go to for books 📚 unless they don't have what I'm looking for. But very happy customer 🌟
G.
Best book shop in Auckland, great selection, great atmosphere, reasonably prices. Comfy chairs for in store reading.
C.
A great shop with a TON of good secondhand books. If they don't have it there, order online from their website - also a big selection of interesting finds. And its not really hard to find.....
G.
Great book shop with lots of choice and reasonable pricesl
S.
Great place to find a bargain. I really miss the old location in Onehunga, but the new building in Eden Terrace is also great. The online store is brilliant and helped me actually get some hard-to-find books and is really work checking out.
N.
One of the best book shops in Auckland. I highly recommend this shop to everyone. There is an excellent range of books and they are all high quality and in good condition.
L.
A good place to buy the second-hand book. They provide a wide range of new and second book with a reasonable price. The books vary from fiction, science, history, politic and so on. The shop keepers are friendly and helpful.
M.
Fabulous! A burning light in the darkness of Twitter, Facebook and Google. Don't waste your time with social media, buy some books and spend quality time understanding the world.
E.
extensive selection, many collections. brilliant store interior. one downside - there is no cataloguing here, so if you’re after a certain book, it’s hit or miss.
T.
Love this book shop, if you want you can get a map from the front desk to help you find the books you want, it's like going on a treasure hunt, I spent 2 hours there just walking around, thoroughly enjoyed it
J.
This is the best bookstore I have visited in New Zealand thus far during my stay. A wide array of selections from classics to historical literature, Hard To Find Books is a bookstore that will satiate your appetite for books many fold.
I.
Great place. I have found really hard to find books from this place. Helpful and friendly service too.
T.
Such a good find. This place is amazing and has such a great range of books on offer for super affordable prices.
V.
This was on my must-visit list for nearly 2 years, and absolutely worth the wait. The hour and a half I spent there was nowhere enough to explore the eclectic collections. Definitely going back.
A.
Hidden gem. Probably a few tens of thousands of books. Has a quiet atmosphere, let’s you get immersed in the world of books. It is truly a beautiful experience. Tucked away off the main road facing the church it is not often many people come in here and it’s usually not too crowded.
S.
Great selection of non-fiction and cool building. Good service as well but a bit hard to access by public transport.
S.
For those who enjoy the hunt for a book that isn't currently mainstream, this bookstore is a must visit. Or if you're visiting Auckland and want to do something a little bit more off the beaten path, check it out. It's quirky, it has a unique character and it offers a huge selection of books to explore, whatever the category.
R.
If you love books, you will LOVE this place.
C.
I hate to use a cliché for a book shop, but this really is a treasure trove for those who love fossicking for favourite books. Always find something to walk away with and always wish I could stay longer.
S.
This was an excellent book store when it was part of the fabric of Onehunga, and pleased to say it is as good now in its new location. Not quite the same magic of a maze of corridors and ladders, but enough old charm in the old house it is now in. Sadly no free parking on the street that we had in Onehunga. This place was an Onehunga asset that should never have been moved, but now is an asset to Newton.
M.
Huge range of books. for the collector of rare or valuable books and first editions through to those wanting car manuals, an affordable good old-fashioned read,. they have second-hand range online stuff too. Good buy
H.
IT'S ENDLESS. I'll be coming here more and more it's so welcoming
H.
Now based in a freestanding large house in the city, the experience here is even better than ever.
Compentent and engaging staff.
Huge amount of books. Always busy, but not crowded.
Almost unlimited nearby paid parking ($3 per hour).
H.
A cool little shop. Unfortunately they didn't have either of the books I was looking for, they could have got them in but I didn't have time to wait for them to arrive. They did have some really cool stuff which I didn't need though. Definitely worth a browse.
r.
Amazing collection, building and staff. Without a doubt one of the finest bookstores in the city, the new premises makes the store feel even more homely and the staff are always friendly with a very well rounded selection of books I always leave with a gem.
P.
Brilliant Second Hand Bookshop. Excellent premises, very knowledgeable staff, could spend days locked away here. Bibliophiles heaven.
K.
Have been here a few time doesn't disappoint always come away with something good to read. Great place to spend the day looking for those books you can't find any where else.
J.
Love spending time in this shop. Best place I know of if you love buying old books.
B.
This is heaven for any bibliophile, the opportunity to rummage throw what can only be described as the best second hand bookshop in the country.
The quirky store is a maze of small rooms and old staircases that lead you through the labyrinth of shelves brimming with books old and new.
Since my last visit a few years ago, they have tidied the store up somewhat, making it easier than ever to dig through the treasure trove.
The staff here are not over friendly I found, or maybe they were particularly busy on the day I visited. They came across a little grumpy and seemed put out that I did not know the rule that large bags go behind the counter. I was more than happy to oblige but got a Tut tut from one of them all the same.
I made sure to smile extra wide when I handed my books over for purchasing, but got a sullen face in return.
S.
Genuinely the nicest book store I've ever been to. great selection of books, and the aesthetic is so quaint.
R.
Great shop, loads of books, very good quality and the staff are very helpful and polite. Would visit again.
C.
Always an amazing place, I find the most fascinating texts and tend to spend far more time here than I intend to! Friendly staff are always ready to help you find that particular book.
E.
This is one of the best and unique book shops I have ever had the privilege of visiting - I always leave with an armfull of literature
J.
Great local business, always willing to take my old books and exchange them for some new reads
C.
Great selection of books, with a real traditional second hand book shop feel.
N.
Best second hand book store in Auckland! Huge selection of children's books. Average price $6. Most expensive book $14.
Will definitely be back again.
J.
Amazing experience and can find books that you've never heard of
L.
Had actual comics! I enjoyed their organization as well.
Was neat and tidy.
Smelled like books! Sniff!
K.
Beautiful, rambling book store with a lot of books to offer. They also have an online store which is helpful when you have a particular book in mind. It's easy to lose a few hours here!
Y.
Amazing place worth visiting if you have old books you want to trade in or other awesome vintage stuff you want to get!
What a beautiful little gem close to the city but in an easy location to park and visit!
S.
Interesting bookstore with lots of books to be discovered
A.
Great place to wander through and find the book you didn't know you'd been looking for. Friendly helpful staff . Great place to spend time in..
Y.
Really fabulous bookshop. I love it very much. The cheapest book is 3.5 dollars. You worth to go this shop!!!
R.
Hard to find is one of my favourite book stores. They have a wide range of books at reasonable prices and the staff are always friendly and helpful.
K.
Great selection of rare and hard to find books. The bookseller was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
M.
Incredible place with a lot of books, friendly and efficient service, they found a book for me in 2 days. Huge place with a lot of knowledge.
R.
Great range of books but very tight space wise and a bit pricey
M.
Good to browse with lots of interesting books. Prices can be rather high though. People also need to be careful as a lot of books stacked over the floor and the stairs up to the next level ..
G.
Amazing place, wherever you look is covered by Books.
A.
If your after some hard to find books here is the place to go.
s.
This is a great little store with the history that the building has and the massive selection of books within there is nothing else like this store.
L.
Full of character, loads of nooks and crannies crammed with books of every sort, it's everything a second hand book store should be.
M.
Awesome collection. Very helpful. I could sit in the sci fi section for ages.
d.
A welcoming bookshop relocated near K Road. The piney scented bookshelves and glorious sun gives it a whole new vibe. Next development may be upstairs-perhaps a cafe for those so inclined.
R.
This place is great. The shop itself is intriguing in its oldness and originality. And once you step inside, you will see shelves upon shelves (floor to ceiling, & 2nd floor) packed with a huge range of books, many of them hardly appearing to have been read - due their very good condition. I've seen books in there that I grew up with, that generally aren't around these days. You can also find recent release books. The staff are all really friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place if you love books...but give yourself plenty of time when visiting it...because you can easily loose track of it in this place.
N.
The Best Place for second bands Brooks in Auckland

It's a beautiful shop not only for bookworms but for everyone. You can find very interesting books that is not available in other bookshops. That's is why is called hard to find books.
F.
High quality second hand books
R.
Lovely experience working way through a maze of curated books. Great vibe and friendly atmosphere
E.
Was so good to find an old gem I thought was lost forever!! Onehunga closed and all hope was lost, until I heard about a new location! Even better location and parking was easy. Found a book that was $400 on line yet only $12 dollar's SCORE of 2019!!
M.
The smell of this building is so evocative for me that it alone makes the visit worthwhile. The memories I have associated with that smell are so steeped in the wonderfully warming, comforting embrace of pages in which one can get utterly enwrapped in hand-written images that I walk into this place and am instantly calmed.
The staff are friendly, the inventory vast, and the building gorgeously aged. Have fun. Go exploring. Find a new old book and get lost in it here.
...Though it would be absolutely lovely if this place had an actual reading room.
Z.
BEST BOOK STORE EVER!!!! Will definitely be a regular here as the prices are inexspensive, Lovely staff and they have a great variety of astronomy books :)
J.
Very extensive selection of good quality books and friendly staff.
K.
Very helpful. Great range, if needing specific book they can check their online range aswell.
S.
Wonderful bookstore with a rich selection. Just how you'd imagine a bookstore from a fantasy movie to be!
They're moving to a new site in the city soon, so stay tuned....
A.
Best 2nd hand book shop, hands down
E.
Excellent range of second hand books in great condition. Great place to explore for an hour
A.
The staff are great, the owner is great and the shop is full. The stairs are scary, they are step in places. But if you need somthing and they have it, they will go and get it for you. Great place to spend your money.
J.
Excellent, huge selection of second hand books in a lovely old building. Bag check policy is a bit irritating but understandable.
n.
Had everything I needed and more. Lovely staff knew exactly where to direct me for specific books.
B.
I sold some technical dressmaking books and sketching books to Hard To Find. Nice staff. They gave me a reasonable price. I'm happy.

Awesome bookstore, with a really great selection and helpful staff. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area!
B.
Like a bookshop you might find in Diagon alley.
Super good fun.
D.
Good second hand book store. Authentic feel with tiny alleys and stacks of books all around you as you move though it.
P.
Awesome place, wonderful selection of books, especial about New Zealand's natural history. The staff member (Brendan) I dealt with was extraordinarily helpful, ordering a book for me and even conjuring up a complementary small paperbark that I might be interested in when I went to pick it up. I highly recommend a visit, you're bound to find something that captivates you.
P.
A wondeuful shop if you just love books
J.
Best Bookshop ever on this planet!
Honestly - I have never seen a better BookStore!
#SaveHardToFindBooks!
B.
Yay found an Anne McCaffrey stash!!
H.
Great bookstore with friendly staff in a nice neighborhood of Auckland.
J.
Great new space still retaining a huge range of really old, moderately old, old and newish books at resonable prices.
F.
Probably one of the best secondhand bookstores in the country, if not the best. The range of books available is overwhelming. It's a place to both marvel at and get lost in!
C.
I love this book store. It's appears chaotic but it's well organized with several small nooks and seats to hang out and sample the products. With staircases ascending to narrow hallways splitting off to tiny rooms with covering various subjects I could easily spend hours in here exploring just one corner. I love the stacks of books and magazines and rooms divided by shelves which makes it feel private even when your surrounded by a history of thoughts.
Yeah, I'm a fan!
G.
Like any good used book store should be, this place is a warren of narrow aisles and steep staircases. A comprehensive selection of books and knowledgeable staff.
R.
Lots of books. A little bit hard to navigate but very interesting!
M.
3rd home!
This place is my heaven 💜
Great staff and an overwhelming variety of reading material for all ages!
D.
Well what can say it is the best place for a good ol poodle of books. The staff and the clientell are a bonus
A book works paradise.
b.
Lots to choose from. This is a large book shop, well organized and in an old building. Pay car parking is nearby. Went on a Sunday and there was plenty of parking.
c.
i heard that their staff fridge was stolen :(
M.
Old quirky building full of a variety of old books - what's not to like.
N.
I walked in and asked the lady on front desk," Do you have a copy of Elena by Nickolas Guage"." I think we do" she said and without research of any kind led me to the book.
Love this shop and the knowledgeable people that run it.
K.
Probably my favorite book shop in Auckland, filled with lots of nooks and crannys, it's like a book adventure land. Over the years I've sunk a lot of money into lots of books from here. Worth making a special trip to.
D.
Amazing place. Give yourself 1 or 2 hours to look around and take your time
P.
They were great before, but now they have moved into a historic building opposite St Ben's church, they are even better. My 10 year old always finds books he wants and my chef girlfriend loves the cooking section, she delights in showing me the cooking "bibles" they have. The range and quality of the books astounds me every time I go there. The best second hand bookshop i know.
D.
Really good and it isnt as hard to find now. Lots of good books for everyone
C.
Must stop by if you're in the area. No frills, excellent, large, collection. Well organized.
T.
Friendly and helpful staff. More books than you could ever imagine, every nook and cranny is filled with them!
L.
I always visit when I am in NZ as they have an amazing selection of books fairly priced
x.
My first time here, came over from the North Shore at a difficult time (4.50pm) arriving 5mins till close time as I was on a hunt for a “hard to find book”- although not the reason for the store name the man stated. The staff were so lovely, helping source the book, and getting a book sent in from Dunedin. The store was easy to find due to the good signage! PLUS - the book was in amazing condition, and far cheaper than anywhere else. I could not believe my luck! Thankyou so much Hard to find books! Your store has made me and my 25 children very happy. We cannot wait to tuck into a good read.
D.
Best place around when looking for those books that are no longer in print.
I.
Just an incredible book shop.
I.
Great range of 2nd hand books at reasonable prices
S.
Friendly staff, fascinating layout, and it's got that good "book smell".
N.
Had woodcut books that I've been looking for a while for. Always a pleasure to hunt around in the shop.
K.
Fantastic way to spend a few hours getting lost in this converted villa with floor to ceiling books in every room (and halls). Definitely worth a visit
M.
The best second hand bookshop in Auckland. A huge collection of books with a particularly large fiction section and some terrific non fiction collections too. The store has a truly homely vibe with a classic smell of old paper. Anyone who loves their books cannot miss this place on any trip down Symonds St.
M.
Amazing store. Can be there for ages
W.
Many books indeed, old and forgotten books you will find it here. They just moved recently, but books are organized already.
A.
A very homey place. They have a huge variety of speciality books about loads of topics, as well a big fiction selection
S.
Unique experience. Many books. And they can source any others you are after.
F.
Best second hand book shop in Auckland! And run by passionate, helpful staff!
a.
BEST. BOOKS. EVER.
gorgeous building, friendly staff, well organised books - while keeping that lovely slightly-lost, rummaging sort of feeling <3
D.
Amazing selection of books, if you can't find it in store then you can look online for thousands of more books. Great place just to wander around.
M.
I could spend hours in this place. Will always choose this place over any others
n.
Great range of books, great to deal with offering and providing great service😆😆😆😆
A.
Hands down this place is awesome. I live in the states and have been looking hard for a book that was becoming increasingly hard to find. I called a bookstore in NYC that referred me to this website. I found the book. It was sent out the same day. I received “Drawings from the Gulag “ in less than a week and it was in great condition for a second hand book. This book will be added to my lifetime collection. Thank you for sending it from across the world. For paying attention to the fact that I put the wrong shipping addres, and send it to the right one, and for sending it some promptly.
T.
Sometimes you can never find what your looking for and finding book stores like this makes it easier and your not wasting time trying too find what you want if other stores are out of a particular book or books that you sre looking for as i was.
R.
This is the best second hand book store in NZ.
L.
Grossly misleading name it was literally right there
D.
Great place to visit, beautiful building, an enormous variety of books and comfy sofas to sit and read
J.
Heaps of really interesting books at good prices, narrow corridors and ladders for the high shelves. Like a candy shop for book lovers.
C.
Fantastic bookshop - one of a kind
A.
Best bookshop in Auckland! Feels like you’re somewhere magical and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful
T.
Amazing, as always. Been going here for my reading fixes and seldom disappointed.
R.
Best book store in the world
G.
Interesting building for a secondhand bookshop. Plenty of books but standard fare except for an Egyptian collection.
B.
Beautiful spot, awesome selection. Magical.
A.
Didn't end up finding what I was after, but the ladies are so lovely, you just want to go and get lost in there!

My number one favourite bookshop in all of New Zealand. They are in Auckland and I live in Wellington so can only visit there about once a year. The store is a multi-level, multi-room seemingly endless maze of books. Book browsing heaven. The prices are very reasonable. The last time I was here there were four books in the window alone that I wanted (I only bought two of them as I found some that I wanted even more inside).

The store itself is a gorgeous 2.5 level character building. It is a quiet, introspective place with an incredible range of books and categories. The staff are very helpful, and you can easily lose an afternoon browsing there.

I love this place and their new set up is amazing highly recommend!
S.
Easily the biggest collection of used books I've seen in New Zealand, and a big improvement on the old Onehunga premises. In particular, the new layout provides the space to browse, and for the collections to be well organised. The online catalogue also links to Hard to Find's Dunedin branch, also a very fine collection, and the staff in Auckland seemed knowledgeable as well as helpful.
