T.Really awesome place! Great selection of different titles and love the variations in copies and covers for books they have multiple of. Layout of the store is a bit weird and confusing if you’re looking for a specific item but the staff are super helpful and understanding so it feels very easy to ask.
J.Always has a wide selection of books, every time I go in I come out with something different and exciting! I have found a lot of good authors through browsing the shelves that you wouldn't find from other book stores.

A.Amazing book shop. Probably one of the best book shops in NZ along with Time Out and Womens Bookshop in Ponsonby. Staff are so helpful and the book selection is great. Have never tried ordering their stuff online their website is a bit cluttered.

I've been Unity Books client for decades. It is Auckland's best store for new books. I mostly buy art books and here's some of them going back years. This is a bookshop whose customers are Uber loyal. Why wouldn't you be? They have a better service than most anywhere else.
They can easily order any books that aren't in stock.
D.Great if somewhat cluttered bookstore with an excellent collection of fiction at the literary end of the scale; and non-fiction books on every imaginable topic with strong New Zealand, including Māori, representation. Great, helpful and very knowledgeable staff.

R.This was a delightful find in the CBD. There’s quite an eclectic selection on offer. There’s not much shelf space in the middle of the shop, so a lot of the books are laid out on tables, which can be a good thing if you like idly browsing along until something catches your eye. There’s also one for children a couple of doors down.

P.This book store is not large, but it feels quite large. I don't know if it's the set up, but books always stand out to me here. I bought two books each the last two times I went.
The workers are friendly. It's definitely a place I'd drop by each time I make my way to Auckland CBD.

S.Edward at Unity Books was so helpful. He found the book I wanted for a friend of mine who was in hotel isolation. I was calling from Sydney. He then kindly walked the book around to the hotel and dropped it at the safe-drop-off for her. My friend came home to NZ from Sydney, for her mother who passed away the day she arrived in NZ/isolation. The book is about life and wonder and will provide her with some comfort. I'm really grateful to Edward for making the process of giving her this gift so easy for us. Thank you Unity Books.

T.A book store worth spending hours at. It was so hard not to pick everything up. What separates this bookstore from others in my opinion is how they layout genres by staff recommendation, local authors, politics, gender identity, etc. It gives you the opportunity to pick up new things that may have been hiding from you on Amazon. Great vibe in here. Grab a book and chill at a nearby cafe.

L.Everything a great book store should be...crammed, chaotic, full of tables, shelves, nooks and crannies all packed with lovely REAL, tactile, booky-smelling books! I seldom shop on High Street but it's worth a visit just to while away an hour or two here. If you love books I defy you to leave here empty handed. I didn't!

J.Not just a bookstore, but the home of a book curator. Maybe because of its size, everything is conscientiously chosen, so you have no choice but actually take your time and absorb what's on show. Walked in for a peak, left with tree books in my hand. In a way it's good this bookstore only exists across the Tasman Sea, or else I'd be broke.
S.Both Wgtn and Auckland stores are fabulous. Hard to get out without being a lot poorer. And only Wgtn owner Tilly Lloyd can make a book on concrete feel like it has to be essential reading!
Z.I visited Little Unity. Amazing. Though they didn't have the books I wanted they took the time to search and order them in so I could get them. The staff member who helped me took the time to listen to me and find out what the books were about. She then made suggestions for similar and relevant books to my needs. She was also very interested to hear about the work I was doing. Love this place!

F.Small little bookstore in the middle of the city. Don't be fooled by its size though as they have all the books that I have wanted so far. They also have a loyalty card.
The only downside is, it can get busy and that's where their size lets it down. But you can always order a book you wanted from their online store as well.
V.I have to avoid this shop - there are far too many great books for me and I can't buy them all.

J.Unity Books is a treasure. The selection is massive, the staff is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. If they don't have what you're after, they're happy to put an order in and are very communicative when it arrives.
G.Ultra friendly staff made it a breeze to order some books that they don't have in stock for later pick up. Otherwise, they feel like they've got a better overall selection than the drastically reduced Whitcoulls down the block. Only downside is how chaotically organized it feels in here.

S.you wont find a better selection of books. the staff are super nice and friendly and always have a smile on, which you dont always get these days. a refreshing scene. bit tight in the store, however which can be a squeeze if its busy. try to go at an off peak time (not lunch time or end of day).
C.It's always a pleasure to visit this iconic bookstore with its groaning books tables and hugely knowledgeable staff. I've also enjoyed working with the marvellous Unity Books team at many events and festivals, where they continue to provide good books and great recommendations under every imaginable circumstance.
M.Re. high price of books in NZ, it's because they're shipped to us from
overseas suppliers. Originally Canadian, I recall being stunned at the
higher price of just about everything when I arrived here in 1987.
NZ is remote.
Now I don't bat an eye and I appreciate our remoteness.
I'm grateful for the few small independent bookstores that remain in NZ.
I could order from the book depository . . . and then wait four - six weeks for it to arrive, or go to Unity Books and buy it today.

J.For me, this is always an enjoyable place to visit, as I enjoy browsing in book stores. With Unity Books, I'm guaranteed to buy a couple of books everytime I visit.
As an aside, they also have a customer loyalty scheme: buy 10 books, and get a credit for the value of the average purchase. Effectively buy 10, get a credit towards the 11th.
A.A cool assortment of books from children's, to food, to contemporary, to unique. But very much overpriced, at least compared to what I'm used to in Canada. Prices aren't even close and I saw a few that were double of what the Canadian price was (NZ and CAD are close to par as of this review). Anyways, I echo some of the other comments on here with respect to that.

S.Never seen such a collection of books (best sellers across all subjects) on sale in one building before. Highly recommended book after highly recommended book. Im assuming they monitor online trends & import accordingly; and at that with fair prices comparable to online stores minus the shipping fee & the always very frustrating delay that comes with waiting on a book — especially if you're really keen to just get right into the thick of it. Will be revisiting basically time I venture out to town.
P.I really like this book store, it has random but cool books, the staff are great and it has a nice atmosphere for looking through their modest books. Ahhh yes, I see you know your judo well.

G.Super nice people. I came in for a copy of The Little Friend by Donna Tartt. When I got home I noticed there was a big ink stain halfway through the book. Went back, and they gave me another copy that was a couple of dollars more expensive without charging me. Absolute life savers as I had a long flight shortly after.

Except this place has better real world organisation and an awesome loyalty card scheme which doesn't require any of your personal info.

A.Unity Books is the mainstay of university students and academics. I bought my James K Baxter anthology there and many other books I still treasure. This time, realising my antiquated knowledge of NZ history, I bought Anne Salmond's "Tears of Rangi" as a guide to revitalising my knowledge. It's that type of bookshop: brain food to help make sense of the modern age. While a smallish shop, Unity is packed with books, well organised and with a large NZ section, fiction and non-fiction. Very friendly and informed staff. Just has a nice feel about the place.
s.It's great to see independent bookstores showing how it should be done. They have a beautiful well curated selection of books, and employ knowledgeable and passionate staff.
