Reviews of Salvation Army Lower Hutt Family Store
A.
Popular place to get second hand items. Shop always fairly busy. To donate items you put them in large crates inside that are clearly labeled. I diligently put them in these baskets however the employees at this Salvation Army are always rather rude about my placement of items, today saying about two wedding items, that’s not “other” it’s “brick-a-brack” then proceeded to read the labels to me. Meanwhile two people dumped their boxes outside and drove off.

Helpful staff. Some very good bargains to be had. In past staff have been so amazing to our ill son. Impressed.

It's a good shop I appreciate how there is free bibles and other Christian books for free but the salvation army shop is not what it used to be some of the prices are a bit much for second hand items witch in some cases army in the best condition
M.
Always good bargain price, but religion books should be a donation

December 2020 was the first time I needed a Food Parcel in all my life. I've been going there off and on since. WINS couldn't find me accommodation in Lower Hutt, Wainomata, Upper Hutt and Masterton too. But the Salvation Army gave me a list of may he's and the first Company listed I got in by a Company I've not heard before: OASIS Network Inc., they help 90% of their work is people who come out of prison at $100 per week. We get free power, free Internet, they get you to set up in to routine, breakfast, Lunch and Dinner cook our own meals, clean up after yourself and put all your gear away, vaccum your room and keep it tidy, wash your clothes and dry them in a dryer that they've supplied and washing powder too and very good Customer Service too. With some strict rules, no smoking, no alcohol, no drugs, TV's off at 11 pm, no fighting, no shouting etc.. Very good people they help you find accommodation, a job and future needs. I never new that was available.

An op shop where there is brisk trade all week. They seem to get the lion's share of donated stock and therefore sales, so turnover of stock has been very high and stuff has become much more expensive over the years (especially when some of the stock is sheer junk or unsalvageable by even the most creatively-minded). This does defeat the purpose of helping buyers who are poor or marginalised by society, although the donation-recipients benefit quite well as a result of this.
Their transport staff is fabulous, they are kind, helpful and respectful. So don't hesitate to give away your unwanted furniture, etc. as they are only too happy to oblige you to collect your surplus furniture or house lots.
On a negative note, when SA receives too many books they dump the surplus in a large bin outside the store (while awaiting final disposal elsewhere). Instead of putting up a large "FREE, HELP YOURSELF" sign the staff, sad to say, STOPS the public from taking these unwanted books away for their own use. These are mostly in great condition, some may be old editions but all are readable, informative, and include children's books. These books would make a great resource for those who help others or themselves to increase literacy skills. The SA shop should be championing the charge to recycle these UNWANTED BOOKS (by passing these donations onwards) since recycling (for profit) IS already their main activity and to encourage others to be Green-minded. In the UK, donors donate their books, furniture and all kinds of good stuff to recipients 100% FREE via large depots run by volunteers. NOTHING is thrown out and everything is RECYCLED.
Other op shops which would like more donated stock and sales are the SPCA Op Shop around the corner in Pretoria St., the St. John's Op Shop in Dudley St. the Te Omanga Hospice shop in High St. etc.

It has turned donations in to a business, the share between young and older children is not distributed rarely,it tends to favour the younger children
