Pete is a master carpenter, surfboard craftsman, and a class act through and through. I received a phone call from a college buddy who was on an extended surf trip in NZ about this guy who taught classes on shaping wooden surfboards. I found a way to get out to NZ, and I have to say it was a memory of a lifetime taking Pete's class.
These boards are beautiful... and rippable. They are more durable than foam, solid beneath your feet, and surprisingly light. I was a little hesitant from 6,700 miles away in California if these boards would be worth the trip. They far exceeded my best expectation.
Pete and Jane were gracious hosts. They shared their time and knowledge with us offering not just a wonderfully designed class but also took us out for some epic surf. It was the ideal blend of classroom instruction in Pete's woodworking studio and rejuvenating surf sessions to amp you up for more shaping.
It came full circle when the boards arrived back in the U.S. The feeling is hard to describe having no experience in woodworking to surfing a board made almost entirely out of wood shaped by your own hands. Truly an experience of a lifetime.
Cheers, Pete! You legend.

I designed and built a wooden 9'6 traditional log with Pete at his workshop in December 2017. Working with him for a week just blew me away. His passion and dedication can be seen in every step of the process. I really enjoyed the experience and learned a lot about wood-working. On top of that I brought home a longboard, which works incredible well and will hopefully last me for a lifetime.

I highly recommend Red Leaf Surfboards to anyone’s looking for a truly sustainable and enjoyable crafting experience. Pete goes the extra mile (or kilometer) to ensure sustainability - all the way down to the resin - for each one one of his surf crafts. He is respectful, fun to work with and extremely knowledgeable. His teaching and passion for woodwork is contagious and really shows in what he produces. Growing up surfing I had always wanted to make a wooden surfboard. When the stars aligned in Gisborne and I saw a Red Leaf board I knew I had to give it a go. Looking back on the experience, it was one of this highlights of my year long trip in NZ. The board is extremely durable, rides better than I expected (check out the lone wolf model) and is an art installation at my home in California. Pete also invests in the community he lives in by hosting local workshops around sustainability. I would give Red Leaf 10 stars and recommend contacting Pete if your in Gisborne to see his board gallery - even if you aren’t interested in a class. He is an incredible human and I am lucky to now call him a lifelong friend. Thanks again Pete!

I was looking for a New Zealand made sustainable option and came across Pete's beautifully handcrafted wooden surfboards - he does not only have the skills and deep understanding as one would expect in a shaper, he also put a lot of passion and his outstanding craftsmanship into the process - my midlength performance fish was well worth the wait and is my favourite board to date - on the maiden ride it already felt like an old friend but excitingly new at the same time - wooden surfboards are indeed heavier than their conventional counterparts, however, they glide much faster than you expect and the flow on the face of a wave feels incredible. I believe a wooden surfboard belongs in everyone's quiver - on top of that, they're utterly beautiful and I've never got so many compliments for my "sexy looking board " until now 😄
A very happy customer

Did a course with Pete January 2018. Top man, knows his stuff and can help you out with all the important stuff so you get the full Gisborne package (where to get a good coffee and which break will be pumping on the swell and wind of the day). Best of all came away with a new board. Cheers Pete, hoping to find the time to get back again and do a hand plane course CHUR!!
