Reviews of Kā Uri unearthed
J.
Nice place to stop for a break, simple food and drink at a reasonable price. The friendly service makes it even better. Do spend some time to look around the shop, you can climb up the inside of a giant tree.
D.
Really nice food, almond coffee was good too - unusual as it can be made horribly! Service was also great - friendly & helpful.
S.
Interesting displays, particularly at very rear of shop where there's a short video clip on a loop, showing the sheer immensity of these ancient trees as they are being 'salvaged' by trucks and lorries that look dwarfed by their load - particularly the very end shot of a section of trunk on the back of a truck.
B.
This was our meeting place for the bus trip to Cape Reinga. It has a gift shop and a coffee shop. The service in the coffee was great in the morning. In the evening the service personal was bit rude. Clean bath rooms.
S.
Amazing Kauri staircase trunk in the shop. Yummy food. Friendly staff who let us park our caravan in the carpark while we drove to Cape Reinga and back.
G.
More like a special gift shop than tourist attraction ... But then again that's what most tourist attractions are haha. Got some really cool, massive Kauri carvings inside such as the giant head, the throne, and the super tree trunk staircase. Cafe and toilets inside too.
s.
Absolutely wonderful service with a genuine smile and very clean well presented in the store itself. As for the warm welcome in the cafe no rewena bread in the cabinet they were more than happy to serve me with a freshly baked bread generously filled with fresh salad more than enough for 2 adults 5* service highly recommended. Purchased pair of koru earrings part cow bone and pohutukawa tree.
A.
A shop filled amazing wood fragrance with beautiful display of bowls, tables and souvenirs. Interesting to watch the video about how the buried kauri been discovered.
A.
This was our pick up point for the sand dunes safari.. it has got a huge collection of souvenirs and furnitures made of Kauri trees. But they are pretty expensive though
R.
Beautiful handcrafted kauri products as well as other locally made products such as hot sauce, tamarillo vinegar and honey. Staircase carved into an old swamp kauri tree was amazing. Mussel fritter for lunch was good.
F.
A store with a double feeling. They make very beautiful things of Kauri wood, but you also know that the Kauri tree is threatened with extinction. Apart from that, you can also drink a cup of coffee or have a nice sandwich.
d.
Beautiful Kauri wood gifts, family friendly, awesome cafe attached with great meals, lovely staff and good value. Check out the tree at its center.
M.
Another great visit must to go to in Kaitaia. Beautiful Kauri. Recommended:)
C.
A cute shop and gallery of wooden crafts, its worth a look , the staircase made out of a tree is quite something. Also the bowls and tables are incredible. There is also a cafe for refreshments and toilets for convenience. A good place for a quick stop.
W.
Great place to stop for food and a wander around looking at some great wooden art work
A.
Cafe and souvenir shop. It also has a wooden exhibition. The items are quite expensive but beautiful. The main attraction is the giant trunk staircase. Went with family kid enjoyed the staircase.
Cafe is good nice coffee as well
J.
The kauri tables and artifacts were just stunning.
P.
Lots of interesting wood work available for purchase and on display an amazing huge Kauri tree trunk that has a stair well carved through the center that you can walk up to get to the next level. Nice in house coffee shop also. Nice place to stop for coffee and browse around. Plenty of off road parking .
K.
Really interesting stairs inside the Kourie tree. Shop was very expensive.
R.
Good place for rest when long driving.
Inside has food shop, coffee shop, Bakery, wood and Souvenir shop.
Especially, the big hole of the center of tree.
Toilet is available.
Car parking is available.
Friendly staffs.

M.
Awesome shop to pop in to see the impressive Kauri arts and crafts as well as an impressive Kauri staiecase. Really good coffee and food too
T.
Staff very helpful, the craftsmanship is very high quality
N.
Very interesting place to visit and learn about Kauri tree.
D.
Very nice store to visit. There's a lot of artwork carved from a +40,000 kauri tree. A true piece of history. You can see a section of the tree in the centre of the store. Around back, there's a cool workshop where (I'm) they create a lot of the artwork. Truly skilled work by the carpenters. There's also a small art gallery upstairs too.
T.
Interesting sculptures and the giant staircase leaves you with wonder.
C.
Worthwhile stopping here if you're exploring the far north. Many lovely Kauri carvings and sculptures; good to look at and to buy (although quite expensive). The staircase alone is worth the stop.
Don't bother trying to find information about the place on their website, it appears that its all focused on sales.
S.
Eyes open for the Kauri Unearth. The place packed with everything from piece of wood to the largest furniture with the price range from little as few dollar to fortune. Great experience. Just unbelievable that the wood is still in great condition after thousands years under muddy soil. Recommended.
G.
This was a stop along our tour of the north, it was a great quick stopover with plenty of souvenir options (got myself a wine holder set) and plenty of very beautiful (expensive) works of art to admire. The amazing staircase is well worth checking out...to imagine the number of years that Kauri tree would have been living for...it's impressive. Love the focus on " no Kauri was killed on the making of our products"
h.
Wow amazing staircase ! Local Wood work beautiful.
A.
Amazing big breakfast cooked by Hilda. Was absolutely stunning! Tasty and presented beautifully on the plate. Your mushrooms are top notch! Thank you so much for the top service Hilda. Ange & Johm
C.
Not a bad gift shop that also setves coffee, prices are reasonable but not cheap. The centrepiece is a staircase inside an old Kauri trunk and that is well worth a look and the most interesting thing to see. If you have a few thousand to spend and a van with you then you may be interested in the coffee tables which are spectacular!
D.
The main attraction of the store are wooden made handicrafts and the giant wood log brought and restored as staircase connecting ground floor to first floor. Cafe is located onsite. Enough amount of seating facility. Also there is onsite big vehicles washing facility is also available. Coffee here is good. Stopover on tour to Cape Reinga and ninety mile beach tour.
Y.
Lovely little local shop. Staff were all very helpful
A.
a good pit stop travelling up north to the light house. Clean and tidy place with friendly staff. A lot to learn about the legendary Kauri tree and its benefits. You can also buy souvenirs made of kauri wood from the cafe. They also have in house carving studio which has items like coffee tables, wall mirrors and also other fascinating items. A must visit place.
J.
Beautiful timber moulded into works of art. Out of reach for the average person looking for a statement piece, but beautiful either way. 30k plus for a dinning table
S.
Small indoor space but has access to big outdoor area.
M.
We stoped here to wash our 4x4. We have never knowen to have a car wash, but there is one right here.$2 for 1 minute. The carvings on the other side are just beautiful and amazingly carved. Alot of time and passion gone onto those carvings. Will be going back to purchase a carving sometime this year.
R.
Good place to stop by on your way to Cape Riyanga
D.
A nice roadside stop, offering a café, gift shop and restrooms. It is nicely laid out, with unique wooden gifts and a huge tree trunk, with a staircase inside! Definitely worth a stop.
N.
Great place to look & wonder at terrible results after the explosion. What courageous people. What an incredible job digging out the ruins. Great staff in the museum.
C.
Some very beautiful pieces of Kauri carving and artwork. The spiral staircase inside a ancient Kauri trunk is truly amazing it must be unique in the world. Slightly let down by the cafe which is somewhat dated both in the Decor & the food which could all do with a bit of an upgrade
S.
Great shop if you have to do the tourist thing. Cafe is great, a tad expensive, staff are friendly, great deck & loads of parking. Worth a visit to make up your own mind.
T.
A great spot to stop and browse! Meet some of the friendly locals. Learn a bit about their culture and admire the carvings on display and the unique carpentry, made from unearthed Ka Uri wood, which carbon dates at 45000 - 50000 years old. Climb the world's only tree trunk carved out staircase between upstairs and down! Then, buy a piece of this ancient wood, in the form of various useful household items to take home with you. There's something to suit most people's wallets!
Ka Uri Unearthed also has a large and refreshingly unassuming cafe makes a good coffee, and provides the hungry traveller with freshly baked goods, and excellent quality hot and cold snacks at reasonable prices. Something for every member of the family.
P.
Great little cafe with proper NZ pies! Interesting museum and the perfect point to pick up the 90 mile beach tour - use Harrisons as they are the only 4x4 coach tour and do 78km on the beach!
K.
Amazing food great service, definitely up there with great places to eat
M.
Beautiful shop, worth a stop just for the stairs
B.
Worth a visit for the staircase carved inside part of a giant kauri log.
Some beautiful kauri art work too.
Worth a stop if you're passing through or searching for something special.
T.
Easy access from State High 1 outside Kaitaia Township going up to the Cape.
Has clean well presented premises,to view the Kauri products on offer here.
The main attraction being the internal staircase craved out off a single Kauri tree.
It also has a cafe and large food bar, the staff are friendly and well presented. Upstairs is a mini art gallery showing local talent.
People might say the prices are high and for the overseas market, but you have to consider the Kauri products on offer here, they are our history and what makes us TANGATA WHENUA (people of the land)
So enjoy this place
P.
Stopped by on a tour, for break. Good restrooms. Great range of kauri timber items to purchase, if desired
J.
I really like their mix of cafe and store in one. We enjoyed a nice coffee and pie before having a look around the fantastic Kauri carvings that were on display
R.
Nice place with lots of kauri tree wooden products. The large staircase is a marvel. The history of the wood is also displayed which makes the place even more interesting.
G.
Beautiful wood products and nice coffee - didn't get to try food but lots of nice looking home-cooked things coming out of the kitchen.
S.

A.
Kauri furniture is beautiful though incredibly expensive. Attached cafe is very average with a limited range of food or drinks. Nothing nearby to look at.
M.
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship. Unfortunately out of our budget.
S.
Was ok, but not happy with our coffees that were forgotten plus my daughter had a black hair in her meal. Wasn't busy at all
M.

S.

L.
Doesn't look like much from the road, but has good food at decent prices. Nice sitting area and hassle free Wi-Fi.
R.
Stop, shop, grab a cuppa and enjoy the amazing kauri carvings, staircase, gifts, tables, mirrors etc. Brilliant!
L.
Had all sorts of wood products. Best thing was the stairwell that was created within a Kauri stump.
P.
Good place to visit when you are up North good rest stop as there's a coffee shop here .
J.
Yeah very hard to find as the name has now changed but pretty much just a big cafe and nz kauri souvenir shop.

Good food at fair prices. Great shop with carved Kairi items. Cheerful staff.
T.
