Reviews of Golden Fern Backpackers
The best backpackers we have ever been to. The staff was super friendly. Very reasonably priced rooms and facilities. If we ever come back back that side, this will be our first choice. Very clean, I liked how everything, was kept ready for us at a short notice, including our entry code late that night...God bless!!!
Reserved a small private room prior to a Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike day. Arrived quite late and still everything was cristal clear how to get in, get the keys etc. The place is spacious, proper, with loads of gear to cook and relax.
It was winter time and the heater provided in the room was very welcome and working very good.
Thank you,
We had the en suite, it was spacious and clean. Free WiFi available, laundry and dryer at a fee of $5. Kitchen is quite spacious and bathrooms and clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Great place to stay at if you are heading for the Crossing, as it is a short 25 mins drive away.
I loved this place! By now, one of the best hostels I've been. Coat, the manager, has amazing energy to make you feel like you are at home! Thanks for these two nights and for the fish! The dinner was so great! 😊
Really chilled backpackers. Friendly owner, nice small garden (with slack line), big kitchen, off-street parking.
The room was completely empty except the beds (I would prefer a night-stand).
The showers and toilets were clean and well lighten. The wi-fi was fast and everywhere.
Generally the atmosphere was welcoming and pleasant.
Great hostel with good facilities. Good WiFi, kitchen, and living space. BBQ available too, close to new world and petrol station. No laundry service available though. The room was very nice with comfy beds and the lady who runs it was very nice and friendly. Also very accommodating upon us adding an extra night allowing us to pay after we returned from the crossing. Only a 20min drive from shuttle pick up point for those doing the tongariro crossing. There is not much to do in the town though. Very quiet.
Travelled over long distance, managed to take a night off at Turangi, small town south of Taupo. Booked into Extreme Backpacker.
Place was empty, the entire property had only 4 people including me and the owner himself. Very friendly owner, had a great chat.
Place was nicely maintained, shower and water pressure was great. I think it was initially designed to fill the summer and winter skiing season, I am quite surprised to see no one stops by during month of April.
Room was tidy, neat, spacious, well equipped. Shared kitchen was nice. Common room was huge with a very nice fire place.
Would definitely go back if I ever choose to stop over by Turangi again.
The host is a really cool guy, very friendly and welcoming. Clean showers and toilets and the beds are comfi. Great place to stay with a big kitchen and chill out area. We'll come back :)
For a hostel, this place is excellent. Great value--there's a full kitchen with everything you might need to cook, comfier mattresses than most hostels, and a pretty little courtyard with grass and hammocks. The staff is great too.

We stayed 3 nights during off season.
They were very friendly. The common parts are big and quite pleasant. We had a 4-room for 2 people.
I'd definitely come back here next time I'm Turangi ! :)

Clean, basic, cheap, and best of all, when there was nowhere else available for 2 mature women at 11.30pm, who just wanted somewhere safe to sleep, the wonderful manager got out of bed to give us a room. Very much appreciated! A million thank yous!

I've travelled all over Asia , Mexico , Central, SouthAmerica and this is by far one of the best hostels I've stayed at in terms of facilities and price. Dorm room is cheap at 20nz per night, the big common room is great, kitchen is one of the best ive ever seen at a hostel and the front room is decked out with awesome fly fishing decor , nice tv and sofas. Great communal courtyard with BBQ , hammocks and even a slackline(popular place of outdoor enthusiasts). The host is super friendly and insightful. This place will be changing ownership in the next few months and hopefully the new owners keep it up to the same vibe and standard of service.
Very tidy backpackers with all the amenities you need. Large living areas with fireplace to stay warm in winter and shared kitchen.
Close to supermarket, petrol station and takeaway food options. Would highly recommend as an affordable option for anyone doing the Tongariro crossing or coming for the recreational kayaking flows.
Best backpackers we've been in. Rooms were clean, tidy. All the amenities we needed. Full of helpful knowledge, even a hair cut if needed in an emergency.
Very cosy and spacious. Everybody's so friendly and thoughtful. However, the place could get quite cold at times, thankfully they provide a heater in each room.
Took a trip with the family to see the snow up Mt Ruapehu and stayed at Extreme backpackers for a night, this place was awesome the whole family just loved the place the kitchen, dinning, lounge was just perfect for our group of 12 and the the host just friendly and made us felt welcome, awesome place I'll definitely make this place as our stop over destination. A+
While suffering a last minute accomadation crisis in Taupo, due to a previous place dicking us around, Roger and Sue saved our bacon.
We are a family with an infant daughter and having explained our situation to Roger over the phone, he quickly made a plan for us to have a twin room, which he explained we could put the beds together and promptly set aside a room for us.
We had been hoping to stay in the Taupo town, but were very happy to travel to Turangi to stay with them and since it was on our way to our next destination, it was all good.
Sue and Roger and their night manager Dazza were very pleasant and we had a very good stay with them.
We would highly reccommend them to stay with.
Free and excellent WiFi, awesome staff (family & worker owned). Lots to do and see, you will have no regrets choosing this hostel over Taupo.
This is one of the best places I've been in New Zealand. Everything is well taken care of. Very cosy and inviting environment. You're sure to have a great time there.
Great place for a wet cycle tourist.
Very welcoming and hospitable.
Kitchen and lounges well set up.
I'll co.e again
Best backpackers I've been to in the whole of nz. The friendliest family run hostel. Perfect place to stay when walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Great friendly staff. Good value for $.
Good facilities. I liked the fire in the lounge and big screen t. V.
The nicest backpackers we've been in so far. Cheap, clean and the owner was warm and friendly ! Plus it's really close to the River !
Wonderful host, really comftorable bed and warm rooms. Big kitchen with proper tools to cook your meals. Really recomended
VERY CLEAN ESTABLISHMENT AND THE MANAGEMENT HAS IMPECCABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'VE FOUND MY STAY AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT ALWAYS ENJOYABLE AND REFRESHING. IT'S A SHAME IT'LL HAVE NEW OWNERS. BECAUSE PRICES TO STAY THERE WILL NOT BE SO AFFORDABLE ANYMORE
One of the best hostels I've stayed in if not the best! Beautiful hostel, really nice and helpful stuff, great rooms, clean, quiet, big kitchen and reasonable prices!
Very helpful and cheap in my time of need. Comfy beds, and nice people, good area, and surprisingly alot to do. Plus free wifi
kitchen is ok but rooms wall veru thin and beds not very good. owner is very kind. good place to start volcano treck.
Best backpackers in Turangi. Staff are awesome, the facilities are clean tidy and spacious. Rooms are great too. We keep coming back here.
A great hostel. We had a room with ensuite. It was clean and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Definitely recommend.
I liked it a lot. Caring hosts, clean and big rooms and a good kitchen. I really enjoyed my time here.
Clean, chilled and relaxes place. Perfect for a stop off. Host was great, with lots of local tips!
Clean, convenient location close to bus stop and shops, big kitchen and common areas, nice hot showers, warm dorms, nice owner. 11/10
Friendly staff! Nice rooms, good showers, good kitchen! And even two cats that come visit :D
5 star just for the cutest cat roaming in the lawn. Absolutely made my morning when found her outside the door!!!! 🐈
Great place to stay. Really nice host. Would recommend as base when going to Tongariro.
Great hostel. Plenty of amenities. Helpful staff. Plenty of activities in the local area.
A very cosy backpacker with a backyard and heaps of lounges. The owner was very friendly, helpful and trustworthy. Very central location.

Amazing place
Nice place
I stayed here to walk around Tongariro. The room, kitchen, and bathroom were all clean. We had the bare minimum of seasonings, and it seems like you can ask for and use the barbecue stove in the courtyard.
If you ask the owner, they will also make shuttle bus reservations for you.
The owner was also very kind and I would definitely like to stay there again next time.
What a great place! I arrived there by chance because I couldn't find a hotel near Lake Taupo. The place is a bit hidden in a commercial area. No particular view or wild environment, but a strategic location south of Taupo for visiting the region and above all a fabulous atmosphere: kindness, friendliness and benevolence. Everyone talks to each other and is interested. People of all ages (from 20 to 60 years old) and from all countries. Clean and functional kitchen, maintained sanitary facilities. Towels available if necessary. Hammocks, living room with sofas, small central garden. Everything was perfect for $24 per day which doesn't spoil anything. See you soon in Roya 😉
Very clean hostel, very quiet and very well equipped kitchen. The garden is very pleasant and the staff are really friendly! One of the best quality/price ratios I have seen. Congratulations !
Location-wise, Turangi is not a particularly beautiful town but is a strategic place to get to Tongariro National Park (the Alpine Shuttles can pick you up in front of the hostel). You can even go swimming in the Tongariro River!
Good beds, large equipped kitchen (not everything is clean), clean showers and toilets
Great backpacker, the best I've seen in New Zealand so far! Ideal for sleeping well before starting a day of sightseeing. Clean and friendly establishment, very pleasant staff!
Very nice, clean and pleasant hostel. Well-equipped kitchen.
Great welcome! Backpackers run and very well looked after by a family which alone are worth the trip to Turangi.
