My partner and I came for a beginners group surfing lesson and we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience! It was a great start to the day. These guys are super professional and down to earth. I was surprised at how many waves we were able to catch and that’s a testament to the great coaching they have. We will definitely be coming back for another lesson! Cheers guys keep doing what you’re doing, awesome stuff 👍✌️

Phil has an amazing knowledge of Piha and surfing, and supported my girls' learning so well that they were up on their board and catching waves in no time. They had such a great lesson that they went back for a second one and can now catch their own waves and turn. What an amazing thing to be able to surf, thanks Phil for looking after them and making sure their lessons were so positive and productive!!

Rented my surfboard from the company’s owners directly on my Piha Beach camping and surfing trip this weekend... great value and even better customer service. My 12-year-old and I just had a fantastic beginner lesson with Zen. He was very attentive and intuitive and got right to the point - we’d both ridden a few waves standing up by the end. Phil also went above and beyond later in the day, in hunting down my misplaced sunnies for me. Highly recommended!

Had a lovely time in Piha thanks for these surfing lessons. A great family run business. Very professional and super accomodating. My holiday I had booked was quite last minute but I was able to call and get a hold of Phil who was able to book my partner and I into lessons with Zen. Zen is very professional and obviously a very experienced surfer. He was very patient with myself and my partner as we were beginner surfers. With his excellent instructions and guidance, we were able to stand up on the first wave! Such an amazing time and highly recommend. Hope to be back again soon!

Phil is one of the best surf coaches I’ve had. I‘ve taken quite a lot of lessons so far and he gave me some of the best tips to improve my surfing. His son is also an amazing surf coach. You can feel that this family knows a lot about this amazing sport! If you are in Piha and want some surfing, this are the guys you want to meet!!

Awesome time surfing! My second lesson, but first time surfing in Piha. Our instructor Phil was super helpful and so nice. He made sure everyone was able to get a feel for standing up on a board. We were originally scheduled to take a lesson at another place, but it ended up being really sketchy. So glad we ended up going with Piha Surf School and they were able to get us in last minute! Highly recommend 🏄🏼‍♀️🤙🏼

Highly recommended! Both Zen and Phil were very friendly and the booking process was smooth. They picked suitable surfboards and wetsuits for us - the surfboards were in an excellent condition. We are beginners who have surfed before and we had a fantastic surfing lesson with Zen. Before getting into the water, Zen gave us a safety briefing, useful tips and overview of the basics. His instructions are very clear and he gives feedback after each ride which really helped us to improve. Zen is professional and it's obvious he has a lot of experience with both surfing and teaching how to surf. He is patient too and he made sure we learnt and had a good time at the same time. Another good thing is that Zen has lived in Piha all his life and knows every little corner of the bay and we changed a few spots during the lesson depending on the surfing skills he wanted us to learn.

A friend and I did our very first beginners lesson at this surf school and it was the best choice. The teacher Phil structures his lessons very individually and does his best to give you a feeling of success so you are likely to surf again some time. I can highly recommend not to book a lesson at any academy at TripAdvisor, but to choose this surf school!

We had a couple of small group lessons for myself and the kids. Phil and Zen were both great. We all got up and surfed our first waves and made quick progress thanks to their guidance and experience. Most importantly the kids had heaps of fun and can't wait to get back to Piha for some more waves. Mission accomplished!

I met Phil and Zen, you could tell straight away that they knew what they were doing and more importantly, they were honest and humble. Had a great time surfing and Phil was a great instructor, teaching the basics effectively and made me go from first time surfing to feeling good enough to get out there on my own. Wish I had more time in New Zealand so I could take another lesson. I have already recommended them to everyone I've met and will continue doing so!

No wonder Piha Surfing School is rated 5/5 on google ! Family business, Phil and Zen are not only great surfers, they're also excellent at teaching and coaching. And fun to top it all 😀 It was my very first lesson, I had a fantastic time and started to catch some waves, I'll definitively be back.

Zen did an awesome job! It was the best surf lesson i've ever had so far. He was the first teacher who taught me the proper way to stand up, positioning and how to use your body to ride the waves. Great day of surfing with a very friendly teacher. Will definitely book another session with Zen.

I had an excellent experience with Piha Surf school! They were very knowledgable of the best and safest places to take people of different levels out in the water. As a beginner, they really made sure I knew what I was doing before getting in the water and were right there to make sure I had it down once we were in there. The guys were super enthusiastic, helpful and made 100% sure everyone had a good ride! I would recommend this to literally anyone, whether you’ve been surfing for years and want to improve technical skills or try a new board or if you have never been on a surf board a day in your life.

These guys are so friendly and knowledgeable! We had an excellent day and these guys make a point of having small group sessions so they have more time to focus on you. Zen was such a cool guy and learned so much from him. Worth every dollar! Very thankful they made us a booking last minute after a competing surf company (Piha Surf Academy) left us high and dry at the last minute. 10/10 experience!

Perfect first surf lesson! My friend and I texted a few surf schools in this area, one school told us the wheater would be to dangerous for surfing on this day. Thats why we have chosen Piha Suf School -and we are very happy about this decision…Phil is a very experienced and good instructor we felt us extremly safe all the time and had a lot of fun. Thanks for the awesome lesson and the very postive first experience with surfing! We would recommmend Piha Surf School definetly.

We had the first surflesson of our life with Phil and we really enjoyed it. On the one hand you have a lot of fun and on the other you learn a lot. He makes sure that everybody gets a lot of waves. We stayed in Piha for one more week to practice on our own and he still gave us advices and helped us in the water.

I had the best time of my life! We spent the majority of the time in the water attempting to surf which was money well spent. In my two hour lesson managed to start off by myself and stand up. Definitely recommend to anyone, suitable for any age. The instructor Zen gave great help and supported us whist we stood up on the board to glide in. Definitely will be coming back!

Learning to surf with the Piha Surf School was awesome. Even though I never stood on a board before I managed to catch waves in white water by myself. They definitely know what they are doing and have a really good concept of teaching their sport. When I hired a longboard from Phil it was stressless and easy to communicate with him. Recommended!

My sister and I booked surfing lessons as part of her 40th bday celebrations and it was AWESOME! There were only the two of us in the class and Phil was fantastic, helping us both to catch a heap of waves. Both of us had had lessons many years previously and this far surpassed these as Phil recognises that complete beginners need considerable help otherwise you just spend 90 minutes 'never standing up' and getting frustrated and demotivated. HIGHLY recommend.

Thank you so much for this fantastic experience! I had a surfing lesson on a Sunday morning and everything was perfect. We had nice sunshine and a really competent teacher who taught me a lot so I was able to stand up very often. I can recommend it to everyone who want's to take a surfing course and lives in Auckland or just passes by.

We had a really great experience with the teacher! He explained everything on the sand, how to stand up, where to put our feet, how to hold our arm... And then he came with us in the water, pushed us to take the waves, count until 3 to help us to stand. We took so much waves! It was like we knew how to surf! We tried surf only once before in Bilbao. the guy staid on the beach, without helping... This is a really good school! I recommend!!!

Both location and teachers are amazing. Phil really managed to accelerate my understanding of surfing within our lesson today. The beach is also great for behinners, intermediary and skilled. Looking forward to more sessions!

Best surfschool in the area! Phil & Zen are real pro surfers and teach from the very basic to serious surfing. Piha Beach is considered to be a rough beach but with them you feel safer than ever!

What can I say..... both Phil and Zen are incredible surf instructors. The small groups, together with the incredible instruction made learning to surf a very un-scary experience- unlike other surf schools I've tried in the past. Would highly highly recommend! Today I had a surf session with Zen. He is a fantastic surf guide! From good tips at the beginning above the helpful assistance during my time in water was everything really great! I felt so save during the time in water, despite really long waves at Piha Beach. I will take surf sessions at Pihas school definitly again at my next visit in Auckland!

I really had a great surfing experience with Piha Surf School (instructed by Phil). I have tried surfing from different surfing spots (disclaimer: tho still a beginner) with their perspective techniques, but how PSS taught me was easy to understand and execute. I would love to be back and surf again!

Great instructors, very professional and friendly. Family run (father and two adult children) with all of them having great surf competition accomplishments. They even make photos and videos of the lesson and share them. Definitely recommend!

If you want a very hands-on experience go with Piha Surf School, the instructor is very experienced and you get a lot of practice and tips. Small group, spent most of the time in the water and he help you to stand in the board so you will definitely catch some waves in your first session.

Piha Surf School gave me my first surfing lesson when I was 19 yrs old. First they instructed me how to stand on a surfboard, and showed me various safety techniques. They got me up and riding every time I surfed with the instructors, Zen and Phil. By 6 months I was able to paddle into my own waves and pull small turns on a shortboard. Now after two years of surfing and brilliant instruction thru lessons and video analysis Piha Surf School provides, I am confident with my ability in the water on a longboard and a shortboard. Surfing has been one of the best additions in my life so far and I plan to pursue it indefinitely! Thank you Piha Surf School for sharing the stoke of surfing and for being awesome instructors!

Fantastic teacher for beginners and fantastic guys. They really know their stuff and picked us up right from the start and got us surfing during the first lesson. Small groups of max. 4 people for the same price as others in way larger groups. Figured it out by ourselves after and our teacher even gave sound advice on how to proceed after and what equipment to buy. Would certainly recommend these guys to friends and family.

Fantastic first introduction to surfing. Even for someone not in their prime....Zen very patient, listened but persisted and got me out there and up on that board-a big achievement! Felt very safe and any anxiety quickly alleviated. Definitely highly recommend. Was a fantastic couple of hours out there-the gloom and rain rapidly forgotten. Big thanks!

Almost immediately, the coach helped me refine my stance, balance, and trimming. I made several breakthroughs and was able to catch some of the best waves of my life! (helped a bit by epic conditions). Very observant and attentive coaching.

Words can't explain how great this experience was for a first time surfer. It wasn't just a great lesson, the passion they have for teaching and seeing you succeed is what made for one of the best experiences of my life .
