Reviews of Basin Reserve
R. E.
Crowd numbers were shocking - I thought we were supposed to be socially distanced!! Not at all possible with how many people you had packed in there! And to make it worse there was hardly anybody seated in the two grandstands but you wouldn't let other people in! And there was hardly any food and drink places!
A shocking effort all round from New Zealand Cricket, Basin Reserve and the Cricket World Cup organisers!!
M. D.
Went to the Night Noodle Market here last week. Really cool venue for this, hope they have it here again. Lots of space to move around unlike at Frank Kitts park. Security and entry/exit was easy as always at the Basin. Loved having a walk around on the hallowed turf at the end of the cricket season too.
R. S.
One of the world's most iconic cricket grounds and certainly the most iconic cricket ground in New Zealand. The Basin Reserve has a rich history and is a real treat for the ardent cricket fan. The ground has two gates (Dempster and Reid gates) which are open to public on non-match days such that cyclists and pedestrians can enter from one gate and exit via the other. Took a walk along the picket-fencing on the boundary on a quiet Sunday morning, recollecting all the great moments this iconic ground has produced in the cricketing world. Seating for spectators can be either on the grass embankments, or seats in the R.H. Vance stand and the Pavilion. In terms of spectator capacity, it can accommodate only a few thousand people, which is significantly lesser than the Westpac Stadium. There is a cricket museum, which unfortunately was closed when I was there. On the pedestrian/cycle track around the playing field, there are plaques containing feats accomplished at the Basin Reserve. Highly recommended for cricket enthusiasts to visit this historic venue in Wellington!
S. B.
Great game of cricket! Fantastic Wellywood day! Awesome to witness Daryl Mitchell's and Devon Conway's maiden centuries! Go the Blackcaps!
S. B.
Iconic ground to watch test cricket. Lovely range of dining cuisine. Cambodian, Thai, Greek,, Argentina, Italian and waffles, gelato, chips in sauce
J. S.
This is another good venue for cricket and there is superior food and drinks to other venues- look at the ice blocks!
On the downside it is very exposed to the sun ☀️do bring your sun protection and it can be very windy.
Parking is also an issue so best to use public transport like a bus to get here and return.
The best place is normally on the bank but you can retreat in the grandstand if the sun gets too much hot for you in the afternoon .
There are a number of entry and exit points.
Frequently the wellington weather plays a part in the game with sessions being called off.
T. T.
Basin reserve is always a good place to sit in a quiet peaceful surrounding, whether you are reading a good book, or watching local cricket, it's great!
M. A.
Although I've never been to a single sporting event at the Basin I do pass through it often, it's a refreshing piece of ease, and (comparative) calm.
A lovely spot to sit in the sun and enjoy the sun (when it's about).
M. R.
On a summer's day during a cricket match there's no finer place to be
C. X. M. A. (.
Awesome Cricket ground, "the biggest round about in NZ" as it's nick name.
A. n.
Decent size, great for a hang out with your friends. Could use some technology upgrades and such, but all seating area is perfect.
D. R.
Brilliant place to sit and watch cricket. Bus stop right outside the ground. Great day out.
J. “. F.
always a good place too walk past or chill at on a nice sunny day...
S.
Love it mate, boganesian culture at its finest😂
T. G.
Only things did not like was not enough food options & wait for coffee was ridiculous.
a. b.
Great place to go for exercise and also watch sports and bands too
H. 1.
Awesome place for Cricket, watched Black Caps against Bangladesh. It was hot and sunny so should have bought stand tickets, but the girl at the ticket office didn't offer them. That was disappointing.
O. R.
I've never felt softer or better-kept grass. A giant bowl. Ten thousand people, united in the name of love.
F. F.
Beautiful iconic ground, well maintained. Unfortunate that the woman’s/ girls toilets are locked on a Sunday during football games
S. H.
Awesome memories of the Basin when I was a young fella but even now it's still really is the home of cricket in Wgtn. Yes you might fit more people in at the stadium and you won't likely have to worry about slipping down the embankment after a few too many bevvys but sitting at the basin in the sun is timeless. Food is a lot better these days and fielders are always close enough for the kids to get a few autographs.
G. R.
Iconic cricket ground with good views from where ever you choose to sit.
G. S.
One of the oldest cricket grounds in WLG, its amazing to watch a game of cricket at Basin. The family area is excellent to be in especially kids can run and play around. Very good view of the players, neatly maintained.
D. B.
In the past the basin has been rated one of the best test cricket grounds in the world, there arn’t many like this in NZ
L.
Lovely Stadium. One of the most enjoyable places to watch cricket, this picturesque arena is always basked in sun. I would advise sitting on the bank on the airport side. With it's fantastic museum, I would recommend this reserve to any cricket fan or sports watcher
T. M. A.
Putting Up Big TV Screen for Cricket Games
T.
Have watched a many cricket 🏏 game here
A. K.
It's amazing place to visit
R. A.
Great ground for test matches. Not very big but very nice setting. Easy access. Awesome views to the pitch from everywhere. Relaxed atmosphere. On normal days without any game being played here, pedestrians can pass through the stadium walking on the boundaries. That is a truly unique experience altogether.
S. A.
Nice place to enjoy a cricket. Lovely to watch a circket match by sitting on the green side. I have watched a few games there. Really good atmosphere. Got only limited variety of food like fish & Chips, some little snacks.. Got only seats on a side. it is an open stadium with trees and green grass on the other side where you can enjoy the match either by sitting or lying on the grass.
Overall a nice experience you will have.
D. H.
No hate only abso and total enjoy ment best cricket ground in this part of the world cheers but beers very pricey
L. L.
Great amphitheatre. Lovely atmosphere. Helpful staff. Free chilled water on tap. Good access to toilets. Reusable returnable refundable plastic glasses sold with beer. Great idea to have sun cream available for free and offered regularly.
Negatives = nowhere to safely leave bike and I came back to mind to find it had been thrown to the end of its locking chain. It's brand new and just scratched, but i wasnt happy.
Limited food options.
The cheap seats had a good view of the empty but sold-out grandstand. Maybe an option to resell seats there. Too hot for me so left half way. Would have been prepared to pay extra to sit in the shade.
M. S.
Had so much fun with my friends at Basin Reserve. Cricket🏏 is just an excuse, the best part is the lush green grass and the wonderfully cozy places under the trees. The best part is, it's bang in the center of the city making it so easy to get back home. Thank you. 💕
A. F.
Great ground to watch cricket on a sunny day but definitely not where you want to be in a cold wet southerly. Also an awesome venue for summer concerts if you are able bodied. Not sure how ideal it would be if you had mobility issues as there wasn't any wheel chair seating
L. P.
Fab venue, great facility. Might be a good idea to have one toilet block open though.
M. M.
Nestled beneath Mount Victoria and Mount Cook, the Basin Reserve is an island of cricket in inner city Wellington. Spectators are accommodated on a grass bank on the eastern side of the ground, a natural sun trap which also provides shelter from the notorious southerly winds. The ground is protected by Act of Parliament and is New Zealand's only sport ground on the National Heritage list.
V. S.
A beautiful and classic cricket ground in the capital city. Many afternoons can be spent watching some of the best cricketers in the world challenging each other in a test of skill and mental attitude.
Turn up in jandals and shorts and be sure to get some of that lush green grass between your toes.
A. C.
The home of NZ cricket! Historical & beautiful to walk through. And a few great games of cricket have been played here too. A must see if you are a fan.
B. H.
A lot of fond memories of the ground. My first time there was I believe Martin Crow's first one day game for New Zealand. We batted first, John Right went out for a golden 🦆 to a ball so fast he didn't see it coming (my batting hero in life). Glen Turner hit a ton and one ball into the Calidonian across the road on the full (my all-time first professional cricket hero). We scored over three hundred runs and the ground was packed to the gunnels. An amazing atmosphere that I will never forget and a wonderful day trip was had down from Palmerston North.
Played one game of football on it many years ago and it was like running in quick sand (one of my childhood fears, like the dark). It's hard and fast now and looking a picture.
The old original grandstand is getting a long overdue face lift and I believe will be fully recovered and operational after it's bout of CANCEROUS CONCRETE inflicted on it by society in the not too distant future.
Let's hope that it can stand up to other 'acts of God's (Earth quakes) or the pen pusher's (business, political and council world) and relive the days of old and recreate the atmosphere of the good old days.
Martin Crow's 299 against limited opposition was just one step short of a miracle (ran out, not over) and just one of the memories set in concert you can see on the walkway around the playing field.
A lot has happened in the past at the Basin Reserve and if you put all the people's memories in a bottle all you will get out of it would be fresh air if you tried to pour it out. I constantly open the bottle every time I walk through the park and my glass is always full.
Life at the Basin Reserve started as a DRY dock. Remember that.
S. N.
Just so calming a location in the midst of everything...
B. -.
Icon cricket ground. That has unfortunately turned into a iconic roundabout with heavy built up traffic and a bunch of old tired looking buildings. The grass it self is lovely, however they need to build the flyover and remove the traffic from around it.
S. B.
Beautiful old ground, everyone should watch an event here from the bank at least once to savour the 150 year history. Food and drinks available but the facilities are all a bit dated and the ice cream queue long on the day we visited.
A. G.
Attended an event in Long Room - excellent facility. Very comfortable. Great afternoon tea. Owners appreciated - scoreboard honoured my friend, a keen cricketer.
T. B.
Night noodle market. Great atmosphere. Not as many stalls, although excellent representation of Asian food. First time. Some items were over the top prices, but mostly great value. Wallet took a good beating.
W. S.
Can't really say much about it as it wasn't open to the public during the day. Good opportunities to take pictures from the outside and traffic is a constant problem during daylight hours, so finding street parking is going to be non existent.
M. S.
Good place to walk around to get exercise and also a great venue for music events or other events. It's great it's open to Free admission when there's no events like cricket or gigs on. World famous.
J. S.
The best cricket park in NZ hands down. Incredible history has gone on here. Also a scenic thoroughfare for cyclists and pedestrians whenever there isn't a game on. A treasure of Wellington.
M. F.
Only one of the best cricket grounds anywhere
D. p.
One of my favourite cricket pitches in the world. Nothing better than sitting on the bank watching a test. Or getting in close when the firebirds play.
One of my favorite memories here is going on the field at lunch with the rest of the crowd during the recent test between Australia and NZ. Slip catching for a family cricket game. Good times in the sun.
F. K.
Attended the Wellington vigil for victims of the Chrustchurch terrorist attack. A very moving occasion held in this iconic venue. Always have loved the Basin, despite it's crazy traffic problems. I love circular grassiness. Plus the sun was shining.
D. M.
Wasn't anything going on when I was there apart from the Wellington team practicing but there are still plates in the ground and boards on walls around the Basin with historical information about cricket in NZ, different players of note, ground records as well as things about the Basin Reserve itself.
E. J.
Great venue for a sunny day. Recently there for beers at the basin, was fantastic. I’m sure it’s great for the cricket too.
s. s.
One of the best place to chill out, relax and watch a game of cricket. Its the best experience. Looking forward for the next match to sit and enjoy.
r. g.
It's nice, there is only one stand where you will get seats and roof.
Half of the stadium is open to sit on grass.
View will be very good.
K. o. J.
Very family friendly
D. V. w.
Wellingtons night noodle Market is awesome - shame about the gale force southerlies and sideways rain! What bad luck for all the good people running the stalls. Winter has come early...
E.
Nice Cricket pitch, had fun playing basketball on it
S. S.

A. S.
Great to see the basin being used for more community events.
M. P.
Look out for the cyclists charging through. Some abuse walkers... Others think its a race track. A few are quite considerate.
Stands are in better repair than they used to be.
M. C.
Very nice sunny place parking is hard to find ariund game days
J. L.
Simply the best place to put your feet up on the grass and watch some local cricket. Go early to catch a shady spot on the western side if he heat or sun gets too much for you.
B. S.

K. V. K.

Great experience, enjoyed the ladies game and surroundings. Absolute kudos to all for what they achieved in that challenging wind!
P. D.
Best atmosphere cricket ground in New Zealand when there's a full house. Also reportedly largest roundabout in southern hemisphere.
N. B.
Great open air entertainment, love being able to chill on the grass while watching cricket, feels more like backyard style

Right in the way of the most major highway in r the country, as all great cricket pitches should be.
H. M.
Had some awesome girls football here. Amazing grounds compared to the majority of the Wellington pitches
H. J.
Worlds greatest cricket ground.
G. F.
Well, to tell you the truth, I never.got a chance to go inside, as there was not much opportunities for parking that day. I only saw it from the outside.
S. B.
Grass embankments, cosy seating. Optional seating in the stands. You are very close to the actual playing area
A.
Spacious. Clean. Was there for Beers at the Basin festival
S. E.
The stadium was nice, but I haven't been to many cricket games.
A. G.
Best place to watch test cricket. Probably second only to Lords.
D. K.
Classic Kiwi cricket ground. Get there early if you want to secure a good seat at the top of the grass bank.
M. J.
Isn't it funny that you can be in paradise watching the game and not even notice that there are so many cars just driving round and round you. Your basically in the middle of a roundabout! Heven
R. A.
Iconic , the basin reserve. Short boundaries and a lively wicket which provide entertaining games time after time.

The best cricket stadium in New Zealand
W. S.
Another quaint cricket oval with a history that is hard to better. It has been host to many historic sporting events. It also features a museum to share it's stories. Well manicured and will play host to many more.

Wellington: Today, the fifth and final match of the one-day series is being played between India and New Zealand at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. Indian captain Rohit Sharma has decided to bat first before winning the toss. India has made three changes in the team. In place of Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav and Khalil Ahmed, in the last eleven, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Vijay Shankar and Mohammed Shami have been given the chance. It is known that Dhoni did not play due to the muscle strain in the last two games. At the same time, New Zealand has made just one change in the team. In place of Martin Guptill, Colin Manorro has been given the place in the last eleven. Guptill is not playing in this match due to injury.
