Reviews of Countdown Grey Lynn Central
S.
A little basic but that its charm. The staff are wonderful, very friendly and lovely.
B.
I love this countdown because of the staff's service to the community like myself.
I am welcomed with a beautiful smile from the security to the person who wheels in the trolleys, stacks the shelves, is on the check out and the staff and managers.
Thank you for your generosity of going the extra mile to find the items that I am looking for if I have not found it. Thank you for sharing your diverse cultures when i visit as well as your team work with each other and me andmy family Whanau Fanau

My cats really miss Salmon and Chicken flavoured Whiskas. (Chunky Chicken is okay too, but S&C has always been Top of the Feline Pops!) I used to pick up our weekly groceries from the Surrey Crescent supermarket on my way home from work or I'd wander the aisles for a while on Saturdays. I've been shopping there for quite some time (I even remember when it was still called Foodtown!) and the staff are lovely. But then ... Oh, no!! They shut down the Surrey Crescent store when the new Ponsonby Rd one opened for business! Unfortunately I don't really like large, flash and new, so i don't think we'll be shopping there often. 🛒...and they don't even stock Salmon & Chicken Whiskas...
S.
What excellent staff, we went to buy a laundry product that had a price underneath it but got to checkout and the price was wrong and much dearer. What did the manager do he honoured the mistake and gave to us at the cheaper price. Bless you. Thanks Team. Simon.
A.
Excellent addition to NZ supermarket landscape.
Most innovative layout so far; great selection across all aisles. Great selection of local products from smaller suppliers, good on you!
Hope it is kept at same standards as per the opening day.
Finally the first parking in NZ with indicating lights over parking bays.
C.
A bit disappointing only one assisted check out open. Long wait for self check out with an arrogant assistance who keeps saying easy. And a screaming kid that went on and on for the entire duration of my shop (which of course is not countdown's fault),
LOL. I also couldn't find small custard nor 18 pkt of toilet paper and 9 pkt was in the 18 pkt shelf. Almost fell for it.

Usually 3 supermarkets within a few k's of each other would be in hot competition. In the Grey Lynn/Ponsonby area however, they are all Countdowns. This one was said to be closing when the new one closer to Ponsonby Rd opened but they must have still been taking in the cash bcs two years on, they're still going strong. I go there rather than the two flasher ones nearby bcs I've been shopping there ever since we moved into the area 25 years ago. It was still called Foodtown back then. Apart from the name, very little has changed and that's why I like it. I know where everything is and have got to know the friendly, helpful, underpaid staff. A few small quibbles are why they don't get the full five stars: the shelves are often understocked, specials not always accurately and obviously marked and the lady at the checkout should have a stool. It's too much to expect someone of our age to stand up all day long!☺️

I went to purchase a pair of Jockey Y fronts which were on special for $5 but was overcharged by $15. The staff were very friendly, and helpful. They provided me a complete refund and I also got to keep the underpants. The big wigs of Countdown are pretty evil all up but the people who work in store are v nice.
C.
This Countdown must be over 40 years old? I think it was a Foodtown in the 80s. It’s tired and a bit shabby. Usually you’ll pass buskers or beggars by the front door. It has less of a selection than the new larger countdown closer to Ponsonby Rd. They hardly ever have more than 2 people serving - if that, so you inevitably have to use self check out or wait for ages.
I still go there about twice a week because it’s convenient and there’s a lot of parking.
Staff are quite nice.
R.
It's okay, but it's a pretty poor imitation of the Ponsonby store that is not very far away. It's okay for a quick shop, but the deli selection is minimal compared to Ponsonby. It's still a load better than Point Chevalier.
D.
Countdown Grey Lynn is set up as other Countdown supermarkets. There is a large carpark on level ground and another level cemented space outside that runs the length of the supermarket providing pedestrian access, so people with a disability should not have problems getting in or out. This supermarket can get busy on week days from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday morning. All the countdown staff I have had cause to approach have been friendly and helpful.
K.
The staff here are the nicest and friendliest of any supermarket in Auckland, which is why I like shopping here. Unfortunately, the management at Progressive apparently considers this store lowest priority, if we are to judge by the downward trend in the quality and range of items available since they've built the new Countdown. Maybe they think Grey Lynners are all happy to switch to the new Countdown. But we love this one!
P.
My local foodie for the last15 years (how do you shorten countdown?). Has every thing I need, good people, i only sometimes go to the fancy one up the other end of the road
N.
Hi! The staff are always friendly and helpful, I thought the store was well stocked and the shelves looked full, I managed to find what I needed and I was in and out of there in no time at all, which was good and it was a good experience.
J.
Honestly the value for money is great here. Where else can you find a public golf course in the middle of the City to spend time on, on a midweek day morning and for only $20 for 9 holes.
R.
Lovely staff, easy parking, has all the basics I need. Definitely my fav Countdown out of the 3 in the area
A.
Convenient location, don't always find everything I need, so I have to jump over to countdown ponsonby. Plenty of parking. There is always one homeless person sitting outside.
J.
No one joined me when I started shouting 10, 9, 8... in the fruit and vege aisle. I think the employees should be contractually obligated to join any countdown started on the premise.
A.
Has countdown it's got everything you need but inside it's looking a bit of tired and could do with a refresh. Go to the other countdown at the other end of Williamson Ave for a much smoother fresher countdown experience
R.
My local Supermarket. Much more friendly than Richmond Rd. Down to earth staff. Not rude young Indian boys trying to be cool. Like Richmond Rd.
T.
Countdown makes shopping easier and quicker for picking up
The weekly groceries for the week i just enjoy the service they provide.
R.
It has a great health food section, with lots of Vegan Selections. Although it prices certain items at higher price points that other Countdowns.
A.
I went there in the am around 11. No hot food and what was there was old and the drink I wanted the selection was only in bulk and no single options
R.
Historic site, now supermarket that's still supplying the goods
P.
Nice little supermarket. Nice and easy to pop in if you need to pipck up something quickly
D.
not much basic item to buy....as people are stock piling instead of being considerate...very disapointed ..it means i may need to order on line to get basic item
E.
My favourite supermarket. Friendly down to earth staff. Always say hi to Sukh cause he remembers us too.
L.
Loved it. Haven't been in in a while as I live elsewhere. Had everything I needed and service was pleasant.
R.
A usual countdown store. Great staff. Aisles are a bit congested compared to larger stores. Still does the job. Easy access.
J.
A little bit out from centre of the city, but a great place to shopping if your in that area, great prices, and great service, more layed back not as busy as central,
E.
Never had any problems and always able to pick up from what I need on my way home from work.
P.
The store is small, so the selection is not as wide as some of the larger stores, it's adequate. Always parking, the staff are friendly.
p.
Good store friendly staff can't get plastic bags tho bring back the bag's you get a 5 star
D.
Bit pricey as you might expect, but a good car park for my oversize Transit and got everything I wanted.
s.
Yes a great place to buy groceries very convenient and close to shops and hotels staff have good customer service.
C.
Handy but tired...
Yeast expired.
Coffee beans close to expiry.
I expect that people are now going to the new branch up the road.
J.
This is not the largest Countdown in the area, but you will probably find most of what you need there. I believe it will be closed when the new shop at the other end of Williamson Avenue is opened.
S.
Good medium sized Countdown. Parking is easy, store was clean.
a.
Best countdown store out there. I mean everything is just amazing about this place and top of it, the staff here is just amazing. Loved it.
M.
Always liked this branch. Was missing the Jazz apples that I love. Are they not in season?
A.
Staff are very helpful. Good range of food and of other groceries.
W.
Nice staff. Not hectic as some supermarkets. Feels more local.
j.
Original supermarket that's small compared to all the new ones popping up. The staff are friendly so that's why I go there
S.
Have been going to this supermarket for 30 years and have never had a bad experience, the staff are lovely and incredibley helpfull!
P.
Not the biggest supermarket in the inner suburbs, but it is clean, well laid out and has friendly, helpful staff.
G.
People smile at you in Grey Lynn Countdown. Other Countdown centres I use they tend to ignore. Probably better community spirit.
N.
Very helpful friendly staff.. nice size not too big or small its just right!
F.
Other Countdown's tend to have a better selection than this one. Fine for a general shopping trip.
C.
This is my goto supermarket, some of the staff know my name. Friendly place to shop. Recommend.
F.
Smaller local countdown. Less range and long queues as they chat about the weather. And give you evil looks at the checkout because you don't look local to the operators.
S.
Awesome for me as there weren't lineups and I got my shopping done quickly.
J.
I love this supermarket. It's kind of old fashioned and easy to get to.
L.
Wow, either someone has been scrubbing, or there's new trolleys! Either way, they are lovely.
P.
Generally very good service. We do pay too much for food in New Zealand!
S.
I always find this store convenient and it has all I need and sometimes more

V.

R.
The range isn't as good as other countdowns but it's tidy and well laid out.
K.
Excellent local supermarket. Plenty of parking and a hot spot for celebrity sightings.
C.
Classic countdown with great urban legend around which way your bananas face, up or down?
A.
Good local supermarket. Not too big but has what you need!
J.
Though a small store,it has all the regular Countdown products
A.

All good shopping clean, good parking, friendly service
M.
Its smaller and not as many products as the Richmond countdown.
S.
Alguds apart from staff eyeing you up lol
