We stayed for two nights in December with our 3 children while biking around the South Island. We had a fabulous dorm room with lots of space to spread out. The room from warm and spotlessly clean. Richard was very friendly and let us store our bikes in the office, which was much appreciated with rain predicted. The kitchen was probably the best kitchen we came across during our 10 weeks of touring. It was huge, immaculately clean and had an excellent range of high-quality equipment to use. This was brilliant as it's difficult to carry everything we need on our bikes. The location was great - very quiet, but just a few minutes walk from town. And, our children loved the animals too. Excellent value for money. Thank you!

Clean, beautiful outdoor space, very cool indoor dining area. Would stay there again! Note: if you're sensitive to chemical smells or have other chemical sensitivities, there was a very chemically smell in the room we stayed in (because of Covid rules I'm sure, but just a heads up for sensitivities)!

Richard is amazing as we left a few things and he got it and even offer to courier... Andrea and her team are awesome... everything we needed for the night were well provided, warm bed, lovely sized room... arranged access after hours... so gutted to have left early morning and not meeting our hosts... but we will definitely be back when we are in Tekapo!!! Going the extra several miles!!! We have never seen such hosts..we are truly grateful and blessed!!!

Great location. Super clean, good beds, good kitchen and showering facilities. Lovely casual atmosphere. It's not unusual sometimes in Tekapo for people to return from Night Sky trips after 1am. I would stay here again .

I've been there 2 times and I love it! The rooms are clean, and the kitchen is large and tidy with everything you need.

Outstanding atmosphere and excellent amenities. The animals are charming and the staff polite and friendly. The kitchen is large and well supplied, even for a fussy cook like myself. In the evenings, when you're sick of viewing the milky way from the large garden scattered with furniture, herbs, and trees, then the cozy lounge is warm and welcoming with it's selection of couches and the wood fireplace throwing it's golden hues.

Awesome place to stay, the hosts are so welcoming and we had a great time. Thank you, highly recommend, we will be back!

Good hostel with reasonable price. Room and the whole backs packer is super clean. Heater is less effective may be because we came on the coldest night. Other than that recommended. Location is very close to Mt John observatory. Good to book of you are doing a night tour.

Such an awesome, well located place with a well equipped kitchen. The rooms were clean and really nice and warm to come back to after a -6C day in the snow. The staff were friendly and nice. Definitely coming back for a stay soon.

Great backpackers retreat! Comfortable accommodation, friendly staff, great kitchen, walking distance to town, and lots to do nearby including fishing! We love going there and plan to continue our annual tradition!!

Clean and tidy. Welcomed after our journey. Our room was spotless, comfortable bed and toilet and shower close by (we stayed in the back packers). The price is reasonable. The kitchen has everything you need. There is a dining room and lounge. Has a good atmosphere. Would stay here again.

Very clean and organized. Joana and Richard are lovely hosts and there's plenty of animals around that you can pet and feed. However, for the price, you'd expect it to be slightly more comfortable, specially being located in a super cold region. Heather was very weak (or old) and didn't work well and there weren't enough blankets available (we didn't ask for more because it was super late at night, I believe they would have provided more blankets if required).

My friend and I stayed for a night on a quick road trip and it turned out to be a really nice hostel. Hats off to the staff - very helpful, friendly, informative and kind enough to let us know when we had left something behind. The facilities and room were clean and tidy. Kitchen was very well equipped and was in full swing at dinner time when we were there. I think my only complaint was that the pillow was too soft for my liking. Otherwise, fantastic place. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!

A nice enough place, could be cleaner. The animals are a nice touch and the rabbits are very friendly! I didn't use the kitchen facilities during my stay but from what I saw they looked reasonable. It was very nice not to have bunk beds in the dorms but the mattresses were in very bad shape. Completely sunken in the middle which did not aid my back. Also the doors were never locked so didn't feel very safe. Bathrooms were clean enough, just don't look at the ceilings! I would stay here in a pinch but would try and find other options should I venture into Tekapo again.

Fantastic location, garden space, kitchen and lounge. I felt so at home, has awesome character. Very clean and tidy. Definitely will stay here again. Everything about it, is just awesome.

Was caught out late at nite in Tekapo, this place was the only one who would answer there phone, went out of there way to help me out and set me up with a bed for the night, can't thank you enough, ten star rating from me cheers steve Moore Ingram Upholstery.

Fine place for a low cost. Staff friendly. Very nice living room and kitchen. Bathroom facilities could have been better. Walls of the rooms are little bit thin. So it can be a bit noisy. But still, price is very good.

Very cut and nice Hostel. It is so cool with all this animals, nice kitchen and very friendly people working there. Sitting in the garden with the rabbits was very nice to enjoy and had the feeling to be somewhere home 😉

Great accommodations. Staff were nice, rooms were clean. Great location! Only complaints were that towels were super scratchy and no shampoo or soap was provided. Also, kitchen was very crowded and constantly in use. Still, highly recommend staying here!

Easily one of the best hostels I've been to - and there have been quite a few. The owners pay attention to every detail and the location is superb. The place is clean, cosy and with a soul. The lounge area is perfect to chill out after a 3-hour hike to a Mt John observatory nearby. Highly recommend to all fellow backpackers out there!

It is really one the awesomest hostel I stayed in entire New Zealand. Private as well as shared rooms. Kitchen is super clean and all the things are available! Toilet is also very clean! Don't doubt just go and stay..

Very clean and comfortable backpackers. variety of rooms from shared ones to double rooms, which are really nice and well equipped. The location is a few minuted walk from the main bus stop. nice clean and comfortable kitchen with all necessary appliances and free tea and coffee. The showers are big, and well maintained, looks like new. nice garden to sit outside in warm days or look at stars at nights. The owners are warm and willing to recommend and help in any question. Feels like home :-) I really loved staying there, been there for 4 nights!

My boyfriend and I was late for our check in due to a later flight arrival time, but we managed to check in seamlessly. Place is clean, we were skeptical bout the communal shower initially but it’s totally clean and tidy. Thank you for leaving a hairdryer in the room as well. It was definitely much appreciated.

Fantastic location and a lovely enviroment to stay in. The owners really seem to care about thier hostel with well fed and kept animals outsite that will say hi to just overall cleanliness of the place. Wish we could have stayed longer. Downfall is that there didnt seem to be many bathrooms but also wasnt too much of an issue.

Cute, little backpackers for an affordable price. The hostel offers a lot of common area space along with cozy dorms that provide single beds. Facilities are clean and the dorms are spread out over the property. Could do with another shower though.

Located not too far away from the core of the village, this Hostel is priced very fairly and have great services including a Kitchen, lounge and showers with bathrooms. The staff are very friendly too. There is also parking if you have brought your car over. Would recommend.

We had a great rest here. The room was tidy and warm. The shower was good enough for a relaxation. It's very close to the lake so we had a great experience of star gazing here. There are many informations of tours and tracks at the reception. The longue is facilitated with wall stove and sofa. The kitchen is well equipped so we had a great self-made dinner here!

Nice Hostel with comfortable Beds - No bunk beds, which I really enjoyed - and very nice staff. Especially James the Receptionist was the best, he was extremely helpful, nice and just a really great help. James, Thank you again! Would definitely recommend staying there. Great hostel with a lot of animals (Cat, guinea pigs, chicken, rabbits and sheep). Great facilities, everything clean and tidy. Wonderful garden to hang out in. The kitchen has a lot of nice stuff, especially new non-stick pans! Will come again if possible!

Booked very last minute and a very pleasant surprise. Private double room was large and clean, and whole atmosphere of hostel was friendly. Not overpacked and easy walking distance to the lake and shops.

Slept there for one night, it was a nice and comfy stay. Really small hostel, but the rooms are awesome, no bunk beds, lots of power sockets etc. Just the WiFi in the rooms was very weak. Bathrooms were fine, the kitchen was a bit old but nice nonetheless

An amazing backpacker to stay! Clean, cosy, homy decoration... Their garden is fantastic. My kids loved seeing the rabbits, chickens and lambs! Highly recommend! Thank you!!!

Great location and facilities in Lake Tekapo! We had a lovely time at this hostel. The owners and woman who work there were so nice and the facilities were in good shape. The kitchen has everything we needed to cook dinners and the bed was comfortable. I highly recommend this hostel.

Staffs are very kind,rooms are bright and beds are nice.It's good to see stars walking down the centre. But it only has one toilet and showroom that doesn't really make sense.And it's too crowded in the kitchen when it is full house. They have cute and huge bunny in their garden.

Stayed here a night and was one of the best places we've ever been. Super comfortable beds, great kitchen, warm fireplace and nice staff. Even with lots of other people visiting it felt quite relaxed. would stay again !

In Winter one of the best hostels because it was isolated and warm rooms. We had a 2-bed room for ourselves. Very friendly staff and clean kitchen/toilets. Also only few minutes walk to the lake. And its the cheapest hostel in the very touristic tekapo village. So you get the best for your money there. We love it :-)

I really liked this place. I stayed here for a total of 3 nights on 2 separate occasions during this past month. The prices are very reasonable and the rooms are clean and the place is located very close to lake Tekapo. I would stay here again if I ever travel back to Tekapo. They even have bunnies and chickens on the property.

Fantastic accommodation! Lived in a 4 bed dorm, and the room is tidy and clean. That applies to the common toilets too. It is also family friendly with plenty of animals for the kids to feel out for.

Great hostel! My partner and I stayed there last in a single room and it was perfect! Very nice and helpful staff. It was also walking distance from the lake and town. Exactly what we needed!

Wonderful hostel with the best beds of all the hostels I've stayed. The diorms are very spacious and clean. And there are no bunk beds! We have played card games in our dorm with our roommates, while others read a book. Their dorms feel like your kid sister room. It has that bedroom vibe. The kitchen and common rooms are in a different building. The kitchen is spacious and clean. And, coming from a country one of the best quality of tap water of the world, this area has the best of NZ. I'm used to drink tap water, so this is the perfect place to fill up your bottles. The common rooms are much smaller. That's why we played games in our dorm. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Wonderful hostel, small rooms with conformable beds, great lounge and kitchen area with a fire. They have some great outdoor facilities as well. We were sad we only stayed one night as it was a truly great hostel.

This hostel is great. Feels very homely, everything about this place is great, there is a nice garden, the rooms are great, communal areas are great, there are cute animals in the garden. One of my favourite hostels in New Zealand. x

Perfect for a stay at Lake Tekapo. We had a two person private room with ensuite bathroom that had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. We were going to arrive after check-in ended, but called and they had a plan for us to collect our key and easily check-in.

I stayed here for 2 nights and really loved it. The 2 owners are very helpful and approachable. The kitchen is big and well equipped. Some comfortable seating areas, clean rooms and good showers, You do have to pay for wi-fi though but it's relatively cheap compared to others in NZ- unlike others I don't regard free wi-fi as a right especially on the South Island. I wish there more of these places to stay at. Highly recommended.

Clean and comfortable. Was a plus having animals to pat. Also a great shetered spot, when winds blowing a gale lakeside,tailormade was calm.

Love this place. Quiet, cute and not far from the bus place. Big kitchen well-equipped, and cosy living room. You can do your laundry (but there is just only one machine, so be patient). Nice staff also. Tekapo is known for its super sky, so perfect place for admiring the stars and the Milky Way :)

Lovely friendly hosts. Affordable. Very very clean and great facilities. There was the added bonus of pets to pat and it was so convenient to the main tekapo centre.

The accomodation for three adults was very warm, spacious and cosy. The ensuite meant we didn't have to walk outside during the terrible weather we had. We were supplied with teabags, a jug, cutlery and crockery. I was abit disappointed at the lack of a toaster and kitchen sink. We had to wash dishes in the bathroom sink. The fridge was also in the bathroom / toilet area, a bit offputting. Overall the place was spotlessly clean.

We are tramping the Te Araroa and arrived a day early and were given a very comfortable 'emergency room'. It was raining and cold and the heater in the room had been put on! There's a snug sitting room with a wood-burning stove. Very warm and welcoming.

Rooms are spacious and clean. The showers are good and good sized kitchen. They have nice out door furntiture, so you can sit outside in the garden in the day or star gaze at night. Depending which building you stay the walls can be very thin. So please be mindful when walking around at night.The beds were tooo soft for me, I just sank in. They provided free tea and coffee, which is good to warm up. There are pegs on the clothes line if you wanted to dry your clothes or towels in the day. Able to receive reception for vodafone. I stayed at another hostel in the same area, which was worse. Taylor made is still defintely one of the better ones.

Great hostel. Comfortable beds, beautiful kitchen. Right next to the center of town. The staff was really friendly and gave us a great tour of the place.

Shared toilet double rooms are probably better than ensuite as it was a container. It was cold, we did however visit on one of the coldest days

Great value, wholesome atmosphere with animals and a nice comfy lounge with fire. Staff very helpful when one of our group became sick.

Wonderful place, James it's always willing to help and explain the activities you can do in Tekapo. You can hike to Mt John, watch the shiny stars, take a walk in the coast of the lake or ride a bike. Beautiful place for fishing too!

One of the cheapest accommodation at Lake Tekapo offerring the basic amenities, shared kitchen and bathroom. The minus point is that the tap water only offers boiling HOT and frezzing COLD water. U can't get warm water.... this is especially disappointing and irritating during winter times.

Have been down to Tekapo for the past three ski seasons and always stay at Tailor Made Tekapo Backpackers. It is located walking distance from the main centre. Thanks again to the staff for being friendly and remembering me. See you again next season.
