Reviews of Pelorus Mail Boat Ltd
Absolutely loved our day on the boat. So much to see and do, especially seeing how a section of NZ society lives. Would highly recommend this tour.
Awesome trip on a not so awesome day. What a wonderful part of the country. Very hardy folk who live out there that's for sure. You would need to be. The day to day conditions would not be easy. Thank you to the female crew, Skipper -Jenny, 1st mate Lauren. Very capable and likeable ladies
Went on the mail boat tour on 16 July 2021. The crew were awesome and very friendly and shared a lot about the area. The weather was not so much on our side but the team made sure we were all comfortable
Had the very best day. Our guides for the day were informative, conversational and we saw some amazing sites.
I have done 100's of boat trips in numerous countries but this one beat them all. The Marlborough Sounds are spectacular!!! The most beautiful scenery and some fantastic sightings of seals, stingrays, a pod of at least 100 dolphins and loads of rare seabirds!! It was very cool playing "postman" for the day and meeting the residents of this rather remote part of the world.
The boat was clean and plenty of space inside and out. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the bathrooms!
But what really made the trip for me and my two youngsters (age 2 and 8 months) were our two fantastic skippers Phil and Fern! Their commentary was fun and interesting ( not information overload like some tours!) And their knowledge of the sounds was very impressive. They built great rapport with the whole boat of all ages and backgrounds and had us all smiling.
I hear that another company is now taking over this small family owned business. I do hope they make NO changes, because if it's not broke...
Thank you guys for a great day out. It will be one that my kids and myself will remember for years to come!!!
The best day ever for a summer trip. A memorable one thats for sure. Great entertainment onboard from the skipper and his assistant with some surprise guests on the way like Pearl and Miss Piggy 🐷 A very well worth trip especially after completing Queen Charlotte Track with walking 71km over 4 days. One of NZ's best backyards to explore. The picnic in Jacob's Bay will not be forgotten. Thank you for a fantastic experience-will highly recommend this fabulous expedition!
Despite some website issues this was a fantastic experience and we are so glad we did it. Despite the mail boat being an operating mail delivery service they really go out of their way for the tourists. The skipper and 1st mate we had (James and Elizabeth) where brilliant, informative and super funny! Rather than have lunch at the cafe we opted for the farm tour which was excellent. Kelly and Trevor where excellent hosts and it really gave you an insight into how isolated (or not) the farmers are. Kelly was a great host with a warm and lovely persona. The views are spectacular and only added to by the green mussel farm tour (on the boat) and the stop at the Gannet colony. The mail boat hosts make sure you miss nothing. We will be recommending this to all our friends and will definitely be back.
We took the Friday route, over 6 hours in all, but it was interesting, at times thrilling, from start to finish visiting some amazing places, island coves, people and animals. At sea we saw 2 pods of Dolphins during our trip and there was time to stop the boat, sit and enjoy an amazing fishing display, with a Gannet accompaniment. The commentary was just right, not constant, but points of interest and amusing anecdotes were delivered well. Overall it’s a great experience in absolutely stunning scenery on a very comfortable boat. Top marks 👏
What an incredible day! A fabulous ride on the Mail Boat up through the Pelorous sounds. 6 hours of stunning scenery complimented with inspiring commentary on the history of the area and of the folk who have lived there. All this delivered by sharp witted skipper James and his assistant, Nicole. Thank you both for a truly timeless & unforgettable day. Oh..And we saw Dolphins too!
I had a fantastic day out on the Sounds. The weather was windy and as a result I was the only passenger so I got to spend a lot of time talking to the crew. They are friendly and very knowledgeable and great company. I have lived in New Zealand on and off for 14 years and I rate this is probably the best trip that you can do. Don’t be put off by bad weather as it is still a great experience.
A real highlight of the South Island trip. The Skipper was excellent, lots of interesting history and a good sense of humour. Highly recommend.
Great experience, good way to see the sounds. Different activities were offered, like a short walk and a farm tour. Very enjoyable day!
Highly recommended! Love the boat trip, very informative and funny! Scenery was gorgeous! They really are delivering parcels to all the people living out by the sea.. Super cool! Makes me want to work for them too! Hahaha.. We made a stop at one of the island as well for a short walk.. Saw lots & lots & lots of dolphins too! So lucky! :)
My mother, husband and I, recently took the Pelorus Mail Boat trip on a Saturday – I think it’s the Western Route, and chose the option of BYO lunch. We’re really glad we did, as that gave us the opportunity to visit the Wilson Bay Farm. I grew up in Blenheim (although I have lived overseas for a very long time) and my father was a shearing contractor, so I spent a lot of school holidays in the shearing shed. Looking around the property was a great trip down memory lane for my mother and I and the jetty was a really nice spot to eat lunch.
The crew on the day, Elizabeth and James, did an outstanding job of keeping everyone entertained with their knowledge and jokes. We didn’t see any dolphins but you take what is given on the day and I’m so very glad we did this trip as it’s one of the highlights of our six weeks working holiday in Nelson. Well done everyone!
Great crew Penny Nichole James & commentaries both Friday and Sunday. Helpful luggage handling service, etc.
Free hot drinks 😋
Good toilets! It's ALL good 😊
Totally awesome day...made delightful by the natural wildlife and skipper and Crew taking time to show us all the highlights 🤩
One of the highlights for our second visit to South Island. While we had a bit of bad weather at the start of the tour, the weather cleared up toward the second half. Loads of fun learning about the history of the mailrun business, fascinating stories about residents of the Marlborough Sound and seeing the staff in action delivering anything from people, groceries to mails! Highly recommend booking a tour if you're around the area. We even got to see a pod of dolphins..must be 50 of them swimming around the boat. Simply magical!
We had a fantastic experience with the Sunday cruise. The skipper was friendly and had a great sense of humour. We visited many Sounds, the mussel farms, had a chance to see the mussels up really close and learned about them, visited a historic working farm with a personal tour and BYO picnic, and saw a gunnet colony too. Though it was Sunday, we did see mails delivered... later we learned the history of this mail boat service and how it has played an important part of people's livelihood in the region (so much so that the Queen had rewarded the mail boat founder with a medal), which was beyond the value of what a touristy sightseeing cruise could bring.
Fantastic day out! Thanks levon and nicole for a great day out. Such an informative and interesting tour. Totally recommend it to others. We'll be back.
Great trip to the outer sounds on the Friday run, light hearted banter from the skipper, well worth the trip.
Fabulous.... So recommend these trips... We had a stunning day... Levon our driver.. Yes I know same name as song by Elton John. Was awesome.. Young guy who was so great with the people on board. His girl who was doing the mail etc was so funny and caring.. Highly recommend
Absolutely beautiful, interesting and informative tour of the sounds. Our skipper was so dry the way he spoke but incredibly funny and at the same time full of great historical and geographical information. So many funny stories and anecdotes, keep the entire boat of about 60 to 70 passengers laughing plus very pleased with the geographical location and history etc. Really recommend when you're in the area of Havelock or even passing through, take the time to go on the Mail Boat Run, very worthwhile and unless you cruise around the area in your own boat, you'll never otherwise see and learn about the Sounds and how important they are to New Zealand and the world.
The trip we did today was amazing. The Sounds are truly one of NZ's jewels. Plenty of native bush right down to the waters edge. Interesting people met on the way while the crew go about their daily job of delivering mail. The crew were great, both very friendly and looked after us all so well. Felt very safe and well informed. The best day ever and we'll be back to do another. Give it a go NZ you don't know what you're missing. Thanks Pelorus Mail Boat Ltd
An amazing day out with skipper James and the bubbly wee hostess. We did the farm tour as well and stopped off at many wee bays dropping off the mail bags. James is full of humor and his commentary is superb..
Trip was great. Staff were amazing. Weather not so good so am coming back on a sunny day to do it again..
Captain of the boat was great. The knowledge he has is great. Fabulous day
What an awesome day! Staff very welcoming and a full itinerary 10am-5pm would definitely recommend 😁
The most amazing experience of our time in NZ. It's one of those things you want to keep a secret so it doesn't get over crowded but you also want to share as it's so special. 100% recommended to anyone travelling to NZ
Girls on the boat were awsome. Bubbly and pleasant.
Keep it up ladies
Nice ride to hopewell lodge
Nice tour to see the the nature in Pelorus Sound. All Infos you get from the team from mail boat.
Was an excellent day. Captain & Host were great. Their commentaries were most informative. Glad we got another chance to go out to explore the Mailboat run. Would highly recommend the trip
Fantastic & beautiful trip around the sounds. Wildlife to watch. Skipper James was a cheerful & witty guide whom we greatly enjoyed listening to. Bindy was a cheerful crew & we appreciated their love of the area & local knowledge. Catamaran was comfortable, either inside, sitting out on back deck or up the top. Very clean. So nice to speak to the farmers at the lunch & swim stop (Foote's farm).
greatest boat run we did in nz
We got into a bit of a stormy waters
Skippy was great on Handling that No one Got sick.
his help was extra nice
best look at which run u like because they did different roots every day
A great all day experience for all ages. The boat is very well equipped and seating comfortable with plenty of space available. Expected such a long trip to be too much but skipper and guide kept things at the right pace and a few stops including a bush walk for those keen made for an amazing day. Make sure to bring lunch and be ready for an exceptional experience. We travelled as a group of nine and it’s been the highlight for the week.
Wonderful trip, skipper was great sharing his local knowledge throughout the trip.
I absolutely loved this trip of a lifetime. It was an extravaganza of stunning scenery. A total must do for any visitor to this beautiful area. Quite the experience. Couldn't give 5 stars as no tea bags and some of the commentary a little off mark. Disappointed also to see DOC brodifacoum poison signs at some wharfs.
The friendly, helpful staff made this a really interesting excursion.
The skipper and deckie were amazing, friendly and professional.
Great day out, fabulous skipper with a wonderful sense of humour and Nicole was the perfect hostess. Some fabulous sights only seen from the water. Would recommend this to everyone 👍
Was absolutely a awesome trip loved every minute of it
Weather caused the Monday and Wednesday trip to be combined on Wednesday. It was so good we booked and went on Friday as well.
Worth every penny spent.
Great crew, lots of dolphins, 1seal and a great cruise thru the sounds
One of those special trips and well worth the cost.
Great day out, James & Elizabeth are the ultimate tour guides
What an excellent way to spend a day. The mail boat does real mail deliveries so you get a sample of life in Marlborough Sound. Every trip is different and each day of the week is a different route. Our day included an excellent lunch at a lodge. Amazing & varied sights for the whole trip and what may be the highlight - informative, interesting and humorous commentaries by the crew, who are "local".
What a fantastic experience. Skipper and crew were just so full of historical knowledge about the
Sounds and we really did get involved in the journey. So glad we decided to make the effort to come to Havelock and do this. Would highly recommend it .
A wonderful day on the Friday Mail Run. Staff very helpful and generous with their time. History, scenery and great weather, what else can one ask for.
Must try
Fantastic experience!!!
Absolutely loved this 'true NZ' experience. A day on remote parts of the Marlborough Sounds (Pelorus Sound), (not the busy Queen Charlotte Sound.)
Jim and his team provided great stories of the locals and the history. Loved the dolphins and gannets! Also enjoyed the visit to the mussel farm, the lunch stop, meeting the locals who live on remote off-the-grid properties only accessible by boat and the walk. Amazing value, not to be missed!
Great way to explore the beautiful sounds. Comfortable inside seats easy to sit on all day. With possibility to sit outside (very windy!) for extra good views. Went for the new year's route (Jan 1st) and our captain clearly knew the route and people along it very well. Lunch at The Rawa lodge was a good option too, and easily booked from the boat.
Excellent day out. Well organised with great commentary - well informed, interesting, and a nice bit of humour. Over 6 hours on the boat but it never felt too long, the views were amazing all the time and we got a real feel of how life in the Sounds is lived. Thanks to all involved.
Wonderful boat trip. Our hosts Jim & Trish we’re excellent. Jim’s commentary was informative and entertaining. The characters we came across on the delivery route, joined in the spirit of the event to keep us all amused. The scenery is beautiful and the boat comfortable. Would happily recommend to friends.
Fantastic cruise, highly recommend. If you’re looking for a genuine kiwi ( NZ) experience this is it! Very friendly crew, relaxed and great sense of humour. Clearly theses guys are passionate about their community in Pelorus Sound. Get to meet the locals who live in this remote part of NZ and their slightly unusual pets. Definitely the highlight of our week in the Sounds.
Great trip, great crew and a nice bush walk too
Nice day out. Great captain and first mate who both put a lot of effort into providing heaps of info and friendly banter. It was a little confusing as to lunch though. We were not 'Allowed' to go to the lunch stop if we didn't pre order lunch. Instead we were dropped at the farm. Lovely farm owners who made a good effort to interest us. Would have preferred to at least be allowed to go and buy a coffee at the lunch stop.
Went with my boyfriend, we both had a brilliant time. Dolphins, seals and other animals were a huge bonus. It was a beautiful trip and even though the day was long Fern and Skipper kept us laughing the whole time. Thank you for a great day, would highly recommend.
The crew made our experience memorable, the skipper's dry sense of humor was lost on some, I have had this on my bucket list to do for a while and picked the weather day to help. Seriously worthwhile and would like to do another route on our next visit to Havelock.
Absolutely stunning trip. Would recommend it totally. Ryan, our skipper was fantastic in his commentary. It's a must do!
Really a great way to see the sounds almost like a local. Ideally when weather is cooperating. Boat staff warm and friendly with many good stories.
Great day, really enjoyed the outer pelorus sound trip today, the rain could not spoil the fun. Great commentary and jokes from our captain, comfortable boat and great views from our seats. Loved all the animals coming down to meet and greet Candice as she delivered the mail. Highly recommend. Appreciated havingto tea, coffee, filtered water and cookies available all through the cruise.
Great day cruising the sounds with the mailboat team Jim and Fern, both very knowledgeable about the area and all the people we had to visit. Was a great experience and would highly recommenced this informative and interesting trip. It is amazing how people live so remotely and on the day of our trip we had to do one extra stop for an emergency beer run, the gentlemen was very happy to receive his missing beer. We even had time to jump off the wharf at lunch to cool down, that was my daughters favourite part of the trip of course. Great fun and a great trip. Thank you to the mailboat team
My Dad and I’s trip on the mail boat was by far our highlight of our trip round the South Island. We did a lot of boat tours, but could not recommend more the Pelorus Mail Boat. We even did Milford sound and thought that did not compare at all to our experience here. Skipper James is very dry and witty which was just up my Dad and I’s street! I will be recommending our trip far and wide to anyone that goes to New Zealand. Thanks again for a fabulous day out.
Thee day was amazing... Exceeded all expectations. Bindi and Levon were funny and informative and we couldn't have wished for a better day! Dog friendly too!
Absolutely fabulous. Great crew. Very informative. Lovely scenery. Would recommend it to everyone. Thankyou for an awesome day.
Great trip and wonderful crew, take a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery and local history
This by far was the best tour we went on in our trip to the South Island. Staff that made you feel like one of the crew, and just chatting to the locals who use the boat in their day to day lives, made this more than just another tourist attraction, for example we had "Boris" one of the locals pet sheep on board with us the day we went. If I am ever in that part of the world again, I most certainly will be putting on my postie jacket.
What an experience! Scenery was amazing! But the fun was watching the mail and groceries being delivered and waiting to see who or what animals greeted the boat! Yes, dogs and pigs came running for their treats!
Awesome. We did the Sunday cruise which included a Bush walk, a farm visit where we had a lunch break and other interesting sights around Pelorus Sound.
Awesome trip, a must do!
We totally loved our trips on the mail boat. Such a fanastic way to explore and enjoy all that the Sounds have to offer. The boat is super comfortable, the staff friendly and fun.
I would give it extra stars if they were available. I had a fantastic day on the water, learnt some history on the area.
Amazing day, we were lucky to see lots of wildlife, informative, friendly great day all round.
Amazing! Fascinating insight into local area. Well worth doing!
Really wonderful experience and great crew. Most cruises lose the local experience, but the mail boat doesn’t. Great way to see the sounds, meet locals, and see nature. If you want to go on a cruise, choose this one.
Fabulous day well worth the money. Great Skipper and first mate (James and Nicole) informative and humorous.
Basic leisurely tour that didn't live up to the brochure. Never met the locals or heard their stories, no farm visit, free tea ran out and seems it's just a way to fund the mail system there.
Wonderful trip. Highly recommend.
Excellent tour guide pilot, lots of knowledge and humor! Loved the cruise and all the beautiful sites we stopped.
Thank you so much it was a wonderful day the 2 crew members were fantastic and very informative will tell other friends to do it
A great trip out into the outer Sounds. Despite being choppy seas and grey weather on the day we went, we had a wonderful time. We dropped mail off at about eight remote jetties, had a tour of a mussel farm, enjoyed the rollercoaster ride of the three minutes of rough seas in the whole six hour sailing, got a running commentary on the history and present of theSounds settlements, and got to run with a pod of dolphins twice - once on the way out and once on the way back. The operators cannot promise the rough patch of sea or the dolphins, but everything else comes with every trip. The boat is new, with internal seating for about sixty people and seating on the roof for those who brave the wind. We had a chilly rainy day, so most folk stayed inside a lot of the time and went upstairs for the mail deliveries. Instant coffee, tea and biscuits on tap for the whole trip. Be aware that you stay on the boat the whole six hours if you do the trip to the outer Sounds. You get a lunch break on land for the other two routes.
Great trip for us, got see a lot of the Sounds and learnt so much of the history and see how environmentally responsible they are selling us their plastic wrapped cost price cups. Would have given a 5 star but they did warn us it wasnt safe to swim in the marina because of all the pollution from refuelling.
Great day out, the sounds are lovely, and going to the mail delivery spots makes it more interesting. Varied commentary. If sitting on top deck, bring lots of sunscreen !
Great hosts had a great day thank you
Jim and Bindy kept us informed and entertained on board while providing a valuable community service for the locals. They work hard but never stop laughing and sharing their love for their job and the location. We had a grand day out in Jimmy's new boat which is fast, smooth and comfortable.
We all had a gr8 time!
Fantastic day out, great way to see the Pelorus Sound. Awesome to learn about the sounds, mailboat business and the locals all from the friendly staff. Even saw a couple of pods of dolphins. Would highly recommend!
A beautiful day for breathe taking scenery.
History of the area just so informative.
Felt there was missed opportunity for lunches
Wonderful experience....and James made it extra special.... love the sense of humour with the commentary!
To be honest I only gave it a 50% rating because I don't recall having anything to do with this boat. I actually went for a 6 day cruise on the Affinity, which was awesome!!
A truly wonderful trip, our puppy was allowed to come. Great lunch at Te Rawa lodge. Friendly and knowledgeable crew.
Fantastic people terrific service.
The mailboat is a wonderful day out. A must do for Havelock visitors and residents.
