Reviews of RealNZ - Bluff Visitor Centre - Experience Stewart Island
I.
I have been on the ferry to Stewart Island and 2 excursions with Real NZ and the quality and value for money is first class. The guides and skipper (Brit, Maddie & Phil) were exceptional. What really makes the difference is their passion for the island, the birds and the environment. One of the best tour operators I have ever used. Thank you so much for making my trip such a memorable one.

Trust that your journey across the Foveaux Strait is in capable hands on deck at the Stewart Island Experience ferry. Modern catamaran vessel with clean, well maintained facilities. Professional staff. Donald is a sweetheart of a man. I was lucky enough to get a smooth ride across the Strait both inbound and outbound. Complementary coffee & tea were a nice perk. The skipper even slowed down when we saw a pod of dolphins swimming up to the boat, then kept a slow speed so they could follow in our wake for long enough for the people onboard to take some photos. A very enjoyable experience all around.

Going to Stewart Island was one of the highlights of our NZ tour, and you have a few ways to get there, one is hire a charter flight and it can be costly, two you could swim, which I wouldn't suggest and then the more viable way is to go by Ferry which if weather permitting does two trips daily, the have car park facilities if you going for a couple of days so no worries there. The staff a friendly and welcoming and during the trip coffee is freely available but not the alcohol

Easy to book online, unfortunately could not get a seat inside and the trip was very rocky. Did not appreciate having to stand up outside for an hour on a rocky trip. Not happy with the experience. Made sure to get an inside seat on the trip home which was a much better trip. Enjoyed the tour on Stewart Island, the tour guide was great.

A very rough crossing but not the fault of the skipper who negotiated the waves well. One hour crossing. They took us five minutes from cast off as our sailing was cancelled so bonus! Thanks! Tea and coffee are complimentary. Not that you'd want it as the ride us stomach churning lol.

Clean, fast, fun ferry service between Bluff and Stewart Island. The staff and captains are really friendly and give you a sort of tour and points of interest on the crossing. Came back in 30 knot winds and had a bumpy ride, and the crew was very kind and helpful to passengers who were sick. Snacks and bar on the boat also.

Both the ferry and secured parking are overpriced for the service offered.
That said, I arrived safely on the island (despite the older male captain flirting with the young female deckhand) AND my car was still intact upon returning several days later.
Also, it’s cheaper than flying. So, I would likely end up using this service again if I return.

Nothing about our journey to Stewart Island was bad. The swell was decent but not fearsome (though some were sick so be prepared... Take what medicine you need).
Crew very friendly, as you would expect, supportive of those not feeling well... Also as expected.
My only concern was that there were no hot pies to go with my beer.... (I have always wanted to have a beer and a pie crossing Foveaux and Cook Straits on a rough sailing)
Thank you very very much. I enjoyed the journey and all there was to do on the island.
