Reviews of Nugget Point Lighthouse
E.
Absolutely breathtaking, highly recommended. Very well cared for track, plenty of parking and absolutely stunning views that take your breath away. This will be a definite stop every time we come to kaka point.
L.
A nice short walk with stunning view. The light house looks so beautiful along with the sea. If you are lucky, you can see the sea lions.
O.
Pretty place. Just need to walk a lil bit from car park but not big deal.
If you are lucky, you could see some seal down the cliff, sunbathing.
Beware of the wind, so windbreaker is highly recommended despite you probably get pretty warm from the walk to the lighthouse.
R.
Amazing little spot to check out. The walk up to the lighthouse is not too difficult and there were loads of seals visible on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. Recommend bringing some binoculars to get a better look!
M.
Great views. Park the car and then walk 900m to the lighthouse. Can get windy and envisage it would be cold when a southerly is blowing so be prepared. Lots of photo ops.
L.
This is a must see when in the Catlins. We were fortunate that it was a calm day - absolutely stunning views and a variety of wildlife. Saw many species of birds and seals
N.
Was a really good walk out to some beautiful scenery. Added bonus of baby seals in the rock pools below.
D.
Easy walk. Lovely view. good parking and toilets before you walk
H.
It’s absolutely beautiful 😍 and worth walking to the light house to enjoy the beautiful nature views.
E.
A very beautiful lighthouse on the cliff overseeing a few exploded tiny islands. It’s a short & gentle slope of walk leading to there. The lookout platform is great & the walking track is well formed. It’s also very close to a penguin/seal colony so it’s definitely a must to visit when you are nearby
T.
Amazing views and photograph opportunities on a good day. The walk was easy if you're good with heights.
M.
A nice walking track along the cliff with some amazingly beautiful ocean views out to see this lighthouse!
It was a short walk on mostly flat and easy trails to reach the lighthouse and we enjoyed the scenery.
The parking is free and the parking lot is a good size, but this is a popular place for visitors and sometimes the parking lot gets full.
Be sure to take your time to enjoy the stunning views and take some great photos!
A.
Amazing view, the lighthouse itself is around a 900 metre walk from the carpark. Fur seals can be seen from the the lookout on the path to the lighthouse.
W.
Great view. Good walk. Not too crowded
M.
Really nice walk and a great view of the sea and some seals. There are nice beaches to visit on a the way.
J.
A stunning lookout with sweeping views and many seals to spot! Photos don’t do it justice, you have to take it all in yourself.
R.
Was a nice easy walk, great views of the wild coast and great pictures of an iconic NZ lighthouse. Good amenities at the car park.
L.
I've visited a whole bunch of places in both the north and south island in the last year and this is one of the most amazing... It may even be my absolute favourite yet on par with Mt Cook. Super easy walk that only takes about 10-15 minutes from the car park, isn't steep, just a nice easy one. Then it's all right there - 360 degree views of pure NZ epicness. Amazing spot for photography!
R.
This was spectacular, only 900 metres from the carpark, today was a bit windy and wet but nothing should stop anyone from going out to have a look and experience the views, just amazing. Saw seals and nesting gulls even from a distance, beautiful. The rocks and small islands at the point of the viewing platform just below the lighthouse are neat and the more so with the rough seas and weather we had today, a total must do.
N.
Must Do ,Can be a little scary its very high but Great views
N.
This place is just majestic. Naturally awesome. If i only live close by, i will go here everyday. My partner would have proposed here, but he decided to propose in one of the church in Dunedin. But still, i asked him to do another proposal in this awesome place. Saw some sea lions as well. this is one of my favourite tourist spots in South Island.
J.
It was a sunny and windy day when I was here. The Lighthouse is amazingly positioned. I would say its definitely worth the walk. The views to the south-west are pleasant. And the height of the trek may give you a unique view of some wildlife (fur seals, shags, possibly the hectors dolphin). At sunrise this must be a stunning location, the golden hour of light may also provide some breathtaking views. You cannot go into the lighthouse. I was really pleased by the nuggets they have lovely vertical rock strata.
w.
Love visiting lighthouses around NZ. Saw fur seals (or may have been sea lions) on way to lighthouse and stunning views of the southern ocean once there. Great trip from Invercargill and through the Catlins. Lots of photo stops there and back. Great day out!
L.
Great view point. Amazing short walk to the lighthouse.
T.
A short dramatic coastal walk. We heard the seals noise like they were having a party down the seashore 😹 sounds creepy though with a sad cloudy weather, and it was very windy.
The walk was around 20 minutes walk.
Dogs are not allowed.
D.
Great place to visit and to enjoy the spectacular view. Of course can be extremely windy, but it's part of the adventure, so watch out your glasses and hold tight your mobile! Careful with children, some parts are very near to the cliffs. Amazing to see the waves hitting the rocks and hear the powerful sounds.
L.
It was like being in the Avatar Movie and being surrounded by the Hallelujah Mountains! You must come and see for yourself. The DOC Volunteer Darryl who was based there for summer was so friendly and took time to explain the importance of conservation and the critical need for major changes from us humans to help the wildlife here in the ocean, along the coast and on land. Thank you for the discussions on the lighthouse history as well. Kia Ora.
N.
Beautiful view of the sea crashing the rocks. It’s about 700m (I might be wrong) to get to the lighthouse from the car park. Going down the path is like a breeze but climbing back up to the car park was a bit difficult. Definitely a good quick visit if you’re nearby.
S.
This is a pretty cool place to go while in the Catlins. Before you get to the lighthouse car park, make sure to stop at the Roaring Bay car park. There is a short walkdown to the Roaring Bay beach where, if you are lucky, you can get to view Yellow Eye Penguins. It's so amazing that wildlife is so accessible.
Once you are done at Roaring Bay, drive 500m or so further up the rd and park up at the Lighthouse car park. All accessible via camper van btw.
The walk to the lighthouse is fantastic, heading around the outside of a steep cliff. Looking down on the way we were able to catch sight of baby seals, screaming like little kids in the rock pools below.
Once you get to the lighthouse the views are magnificent. The rock formations in the ocean below are very cool and you are literally perched up at the end of the point overlooking the bays to the north and south.
Make sure you go take a look if you are in the area.
W.
Nugget Point is named by the famous explorer Captain Cook because they looked like pieces of gold. The
scattering of rocky islets (The Nuggets.)
Located in the Northern part of the Catlins, there is gold here. That is if you can see and look for it, the wild untamed creatures that make their home here.
Binoculars are essential if you want to view 76 metres below from the lighthouse platform.
Nugget Point is home to sea lions, sooty shearwaters, shags, yellow-eyed penguins, spoonbills and a breeding colony of gannets. Occasionally, elephant and leopard seals visit the area. If you watch the water for a while, you might see Hector's dolphins.
Everything turning to gold.

(Jan 2020)
Amazing view. If you are lucky you can spot fur seals. Deff worth the walk up there! Would be great when the sun sets.
D.
Short walk to the point. Can be very windy so dress accordingly. Perfect if you catch the weather on good day. Keep your eyes peeled for yellow eyed penguins and fur seals. If you're taking a camera try to take one with a good zooming len as the wildlife can be hard to capture. Very scenic. Well worth the drive and the stroll 😄😄
S.
Again a very stunning place. Rugged but beautiful. I am unfit but managed this with some breathing stops. Great views down the Caitlin coast line. Baby seal pups and mums can be heard and seen. Just beautiful. Well worth the walk
I.
One of the most beautiful places I've seen. It was a beautiful winter's day so fairly quiet with sun and amazing visibility. Just standing at the lighthouse with endless views out over the ocean, seals playing in rock pools at the bottom of the cliffs. Beautiful beaches and bays in one direction, steep cliffs towering above the sea in the other. Heavenly.
K.
Amazing view! Managed to see one sea lion courtesy of a local Kiwi uncle pointed out.
Check the weather beforehand as it can get hella windy (dangerous to walk if gets too windy).
Supervise your kids too.
R.
Very cool spot. Been visiting for years. Use to be allowed to climb down on to the rocks among the Seals. Had a close encounter with an Elephant Seal once. Fantastic place to visit and nice coastal walk. You can even sometimes spot some Yellow-eyed Penguins on their way home if you’re lucky
C.
Really cute lighthouse with awesome cliff views. Definitely worth checking out
G.
While most people will surely be talking about the lighthouse, my geology hobby self fell in love with the stratigraphy of the terrain! How the once flat strata of the sediment was literally pushed up 90° due to dip and strike activity over millions of years, forming these land and water cliffs of the area overall. Which also makes me think how this lighthouse and path are perched up on those same vertical angle slides that could easily just split away much more than horizontally erode. The path from the parking lot to the lighthouse and viewing platforms are a surprisingly easy walk despite being up and downhill. I knew this place was a must see so despite reading off the Cathedral Cave for this before sunset, I think it was worth it. Don't forget the Roaring Bay walk down to potentially see penguins!
B.
This is just another one of those stunning places that New Zealand can boast about, not only is the walk to the lighthouse scenic but you are most likely to see some awesome nature on the way, I suggest you take a pair of decent binoculars to get close up views of the seals and bird life. It's well worth the scenery if the weather permits
A.
Truly the best experience I had while visiting New Zealand. I happened to arrive right before sunset (5:30 PM) and got a spectacular view of the lighthouse and nuggets. There is a view from the hill that is "recommended" to not visit due to rocks being "loose". However, I ventured up there and didn't feel unsafe - great views!
J.
The lighthouse overlook has some stunning views. It's a small hike up to it but it's worth it. Nugget Point does get a lot of travelers. If you're lucky you'll get to see (or hear) NZ fur seals sitting lounging on the rocks below.
P.
A very good place as others have pointed out. I am not gonna start talking about that as you have other reviews
What I wanted to share here is that the way going up is winding and mostly one way traffic. You just gotta be careful going up and down. Obviously if you here during winter , be extra careful
C.
After a passing shower the sun came out in time for us to walk to the lighthouse with its amazing views! No wind made for a very pleasant walk. Well worth a visit. The seal pups were playing in a rock pool below. Fantastic.
D.
Stunning views of the cliffs and ocean (we barely looked at the lighthouse itself).
Well worth a visit, especially at sunset.
R.
This is one of my favorite places in NZ. It may take around 30 mins to drive from Balclutha to Nugget point. Amazing spot where you can see beautiful ocean and islets! Highly recommended indeed!
R.
This rocks in the sea looks like nuggets. Easy walk to the lighthouse from the car park. You will see Seals and lots of them. I was very tempted to walk down the cliffs to take some pictures.
C.
Such a fantastic photogenic spot! You’ve probably seen a million pictures of this place and it’s well worth the trip. It can get crowded given how popular it is so be prepared. It’s a bit of a walk to the actual lighthouse but along the way, remember to look down to see seals on the rocks if you’re lucky!
There’s also a seal point by the car park that you need to walk down to.
The lighthouse keeper’s house en route is private property so stay away!
Remember that the sun doesn’t set behind or in the line of sight of the lighthouse. Those shots you see with the sun or the skies on fire, are shot during sunrise.
A definite recommendation to visit!
V.
What a magic place.
The sound of the wind, the sea, the view of birds and sea lions will invite you to meditate, close your eyes and spend hours without releasing.
If you can, go at the sunset, you will be amazed.
Sometimes it is busy, be patient to get your amazing pictures
p.
Access to the lighthouse is via a well formed path by the side of the hill, sheer drops on your left hand side. The sheer drops down makes it rather nice for spotting the seals sunbathing down below. The Nugget Point Lighthouse is not a majestic lighthouse, but the view as you make the last turn around the light house is just pure breathtakingly beautiful, especially on a day with clear blue skies. Pack your picnic snack to spend some time here and take in the scenery while trying to spot the seals down below.
A.
Well worth a little trip up to see the lighthouse as it does offer some pretty damn impressive views.
The lighthouse itself is incredibly photogenic and the walk itself takes about 10 minutes on a relatively straight path (it does include some descends/ascends).
All in all, got some wonderful pictures and an even cooler sunset!
C.
Well worth the short walk, Nugget Point lighthouse is spectacular. Seals can be seen on the rocky shoreline below. Take your time, soak in the scenery, and take a million pictures here. The walk is about 900m from the car park but there isn't a lot of uphill or downhill along the way.
R.
Beautiful short walk to not only see the lighthouse, but also lots of sea lions and some beautiful rock formations. We also watched thousands of birds taking of from the rocks flying across 2 Kajaks. Magnificent!
D.
Amazing view on an amazing day! Park your car in the car-park and do this walk to the lighthouse if you are in the area - very picturesque. Highly recommended and you won't regret it :-)
K.
Fantastic drive, be careful of the narrow, sometimes one lane roadway on the way into the carpark. It can be get Berry busy, especially with the campervans so my advise would be to get the there early morning's or later in the afternoon. A very nice scenic walk to the lighthouse.
V.
Amazing views when you walk up to the lighthouse, ocean on both sides and you're walking in the middle.
M.
Incredible scenery, did see a fair few sealions off in the distance however the scenery here stole the show for me, nugget point its self is beautiful to look out, the rocky outcrop looks like something straight out of Pirates of the Caribbean. I love the way the cliffs over look the sea, almost reminds me of the cliffs of dover for some reason. And then the lighthouse itself really does look magnificent from the rite angle with the sea as a back drop, for somewhere thats completely free its a must do to me, the route itself to and from the lighthouse is easy and also gives the same amazing views
S.
Wow, the views on the walk and the steep drop on the trail were breathtaking. We saw spoonbills nesting and seals on the way out. The lighthouse itself is inaccessible. Parking is good at the top with a circa 1km comfortable walk to the lighthouse.
V.
Sadly there were to many clouds to see the sunrise, but it was a nice morning with good view. We headed down to see the penguins, but we were to late so we came back in the afternoon and we were lucky to see one of those rare animals! Fascinating!
C.
Amazing place to visit. Beautiful scenic views of the catlins coastline. A Stunning lighthouse at the end of a 900m walk. Plenty of seal colonies to check out as well. Only issue was that the road up to the carpark is very narrow with blind corners, so drivers should take plenty of care
A.
Well worth the trip, well signposted and an easy track, views are amazing, spacious carpark and well maintained facilities, unique place
J.
Wow wow wow! Such a beautiful place with breathtaking views. We arrived just before the sunset. We loved the pictures taken at that time. Make sure you bring your phone or torch it can be really dark. Big car park with toilets.
S.
Nice short walk out to the lighthouse and point. Very scenic views and could see some seals on the rocks far below
P.
Not for the faint-hearted and definitely not for young kids. If you don't suffer from vertigo (I do) it's spectacular. Bit of an uphill hike back, but there are areas to have a break. If you want the full life-threatening experience, go on a windy day.
D.
Excellent place to visit, the view gets better every step toward the lighthouse. Got the chance to see a couple orcas and some seals (they weren't close). Definitely a must in NZ.
S.
Loved it, beautiful view at the end. So worth it. Even though we had bit of rain on the way. Just loved the spot.must visit.
S.
The path to the lighthouse looks to be well maintained, however there are parts where there is no fencing etc over the cliff, so you must be careful, especially with children etc.
It’s probably just under 2k from the car park and back again.
We managed to see some seals, but you have to look quite closely, as they are at the bottom of the cliffs.
This is a free track too, with free parking. There are also toilets available at the car park.
T.
Worth visiting, really nice rock formations in the ocean visible from the lighthouse. Easy hike from car park, less than 15 minutes.
S.
I had no Idea how special this place is until I arrive. You can see some penguins 🐧 around this area and fur seals. The views are amazing. Worth a visit !
J.
Excellent little walk up to the lighthouse. The view is spectacular once you are out on the little arm. Steep drops either side of the walk, so stick to the path! A few plaques giving some history en route to the light keepers house. A great stop on your Catlins adventure. I would love to see it on a sunny morning!
M.
Best at dawn. Fur seals everywhere. If you have a big enough zoom you can see them up the steep rocks on the small outcrop of islands from the lighthouse.
K.
Lovely wildlife and nature destination, Saw lot's of Sea Lions and also Royal Spoonbills nesting.
S.
We stopped to visit Nugget Point. A walk out to the lighthouse showed us the East in sunshine, and the West in grey. The grey of course was steadily advancing our way. This was a good place to visit, loads of seals, in the water and on the rocks, some in very precarious positions. They left us wondering how they could get into these sunny areas until we saw some bounding up the rocks. Back to the car, we had mainly missed the rain.
B.
A 20 min walk to some great views of the lighthouse and coast.
V.
It’s about a 5-10 minute walk from the parking lot. It’s an beautiful view. Try to catch this view during sunset. The colors truly comes out.
D.
Awesome views. Highly recommend. Walk isn’t too long, kids did it fine. Really cool place to visit.
R.
Do I really need to comment after this photo? Amazing place especially in sunrise. Beautiful walk accompanied very often by the sound of roaring seals on the bottom of the cliff. A bit down from the car park there's a penguin breeding place with a hideout. If you're lucky you can spot a yellow eyed penguin or a seal hanging out on the beach.
R.
It‘s a beautiful walk and only takes you 10 minutes. We really enjoyed it and even saw a sealion! It is very stunning and I would even go there if the weather is not good!
E.
A great place with beautiful scenery and views of seals and birds. Worth a visit.
P.
Such beautiful 🤩 and gorgeous view! Highly recommended!!!
P.
what an amazing experience.. 30 mnts walk.. even if you don't like to do walking it is worth it.. bring your vinoculars and discover the Seals and birds in their natural environment...
N.
Should be on your to do list when you are on a South Island trip. One of the most beautiful spots on the south coast. The lighthouse is on a big rock you have a very nice view from up there.
M.
An awesome place where the scenery is just priceless. Sea lions basking the sun or swimming or grooming, the cliffs, rock formations, historical lighthouse - all bonuses of a long and winding trip.
N.
Great place to visit if you are in the area. Worth the small 20km return trip from Kaka Point! Watch the seals and take in the views, can be windy so make sure you have something warm on. Only a short walk about (1.2km return) dosnt take long all very flat.
M.
Wow what a great light house! A short beautiful walk along a cliff faced track up to the light house for amazing views of crazy rock formations out off the point
S.
I had seen many photos and You Tube videos from here, so Nugget Point was on our must see list for The Catlins. We got here just after winter sunrise and had the place to ourselves. We were rewarded with an amazing experience and thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
J.
Had the most beautiful day to experience these most spectacular views. Well worth the walk.
M.
Nice stop off if you are passing by. A fairly easy 1km from the car park. Quite interesting shaped rocks at the end and seals to spot in the pools below the path.
M.
Very easy walk. Lots of seals to see on this short walk. Really nice view at The end with the lighthouse and nuggets.
J.
Currently we can only get as far as the Nugget point carpark. Gates to the lighthouse have been locked due to Level 2 restrictions apparently.
Still great views but a little disappointing.
F.
Nice walk to the lighthouse. The gravel path is an easy walk. The views from the cliffs down to the clear water are amazingly beautiful. The water is so clear that we could see the seals swimming in the ocean. At the lighthouse we were able to spot more seals sunning themselves on the rocks. The views of the sea eroded rocky islands and cliffs are spectacular. Well worth the 20 minutes we spent walking to the lighthouse. The car park makes access very easy.
J.
Amazing views, really shows the ruggedness of the coastline. Well worth the walk
G.
Really energetic experience....
Beautiful landscape, feels like a mini Jurassic world......
d.
Beautiful lighthouse! Easy walk from carpark. So amazing the ocean and the views. You need to go there!
S.
This place is a must visit if you're in southland.. amazing views.
Good and easy walk way. Definitely one in a million places I'd like to revisit
N.
Great views could see seals swimming in the rock pools below.
N.
Beautiful place for a sunrise or a night time. After parking you have to walking just a little.
C.
Lovely area, great views, the lighthouse itself isn't stunning, but the surrounding area is!
H.
What a great place for the view, a 600M walk from parking lot. Very peaceful but can get quite dark after sunset.
L.
I wanted to visit nugget point with sunrise so I needed to explore the place in the evening. It was very rainy that evening but all of the sudden the sun came between the clouds and nature treated us with beautiful rainbows. Amazing place!
M.
Great beautiful place! I liked the most distant hills in the water, not the lighthouse itself. Did there nightstar photography and shooting for a sunrise.
J.
the drive to the lighthouse was lovely & ocean views stunning. lighthouse itself a bit meh but overall great way to spend some time along a lovely coastline
E.
A must to visit. Lovely walk and great w.views
t.
Beautiful lighthouse and overlook. Definitely recommend. There were hundreds of seal when we walked the trail .
L.
Was here 9 yrs ago on a gorgeous day in Feb, June a but colder but all the same colours great and a fine walking distance
E.
Beautiful walk to the lighthouse, don't forget to look around, stunning views
A.
Only a 20-minute walk to see beautiful sea, lighthouse and rocks coming out of the water. It's just very beautiful so little effort, for those who can't be bothered doing a big walk
L.
Nice place to visit. A beautiful lighthouse, seems like at the end of the world.
M.
Gorgeous and a lovely walk out here. Worth the detour. There are sea lions down below so keep an eye out for them.
N.
It was great scenery the only thing was the path to get there was a bit dodgy because it had no railing or anything from stopping you from falling
T.
Nugget point is a really stunning part of the Catlins in the deep south. It has very well built tracks with informational plaques all around which is great to help everyone learn about the area. Certainly a must see if you're in the Catlins!
p.
Lovely spot to visit, can get windy so wrap up, walk takes 20 mins from the carpark at a fat man's pace, lovely views and helpfull informational plaques on the way. Can sometimes see seals.
G.
If you're in the area, this is a must-see. Probably not worth the drive otherwise from Dunedin just to see it. Good photo opportunities here also, there's a fantastic view as you'd expect from a lighthouse.
S.
Fabulous place to visit as a day trip from Dunedin.
R.
Nice short walk with almost flat terrain throughout
O.
Definitely a place if you are able to visit, breath taking view and you can stay in a hide to watch penguins not far from the entrance.
N.
Awesome place, short walk, beautiful views
A.
Took a detour during our drive from Dunedin to Tell Anau. Nice walk (about 900 m to lighthouse platform, only 100 m from parking lot to platform to see the spoonbills) with beautiful views, poetic interpretive signs and lots of wildlife to see (spoonbills, fur seals -- bring binoculars if you can). Fairly clean bathrooms with a sink to wash hands. Highly recommend for a stopping point on the South coast drive.
M.
A bit of a hike to reach the lighthouse, but the view is amazing and the wildlife down on the beach is fun to see.
T.
This was one of my favorite spots in New Zealand. The whole thing is just beautiful.
M.
Absolutely loved this place, the lighthouse, cliffs, the views and the little informative tablets dotted around the location were awesome
P.
Breathtaking views. Well worth the 1km walk in and back. Ensure done on a cloudless day preferably.
J.
Well worth the walk. Amazing views
S.
Beautiful walk, views to die for.Easy walk.
e.
Awesome walk and view.
Might see Sealion from the top.
A.
Super beautiful place just a short walk from the car park!
M.
Also amazingly good to here all the sea life as you walk to and from the lighthouse good walk for young and older people with good rest areas and seats to rest at.:)
澳.
Nugget point is a promontory at the southeast end of New Zealand. It's about a kilometer from the parking lot to the lighthouse. We braved the cold wind and heavy rain while walking to see the scenery on both sides. We didn't feel very tired. The lighthouse was built in 1896
D.
Great easy short walk with amazing views at the end.
L.
It’s amazing place. You must visit here. You can walk to the lighthouse but take picture little bit far away from the lighthouse then you can take nice picture with the lighthouse 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 also you can find some sea lions 😊
P.
Nugget Point has spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Many visitors come early and late to take photos of the richly colourful scene. A special view can be had by a dawn kayak trip, provided by a small local kayak company. The rare and endangered yellow-eyed penguin can also be seen by patient bird-watchers in the hide at Roaring Bay. Background to all aspects of the area are on display at the charming Owaka museum.
M.
Great walk. Look for seals on the cliffs below
J.
Superb picturesque spot especially at sunset time.
A.
Awesome place! Come early because it can get crowded. Amazing view over the nuggets. Easy drive, big parking lot.
S.
+ Nice short hike
+ Sweet views of the rugged shoreline
+ Good place to spot sea lions, but bring binoculars!
+ The platform by the light house has great views
+ Can be extremely windy, which adds an extra level of excitement to being on the viewing platform
- You can only spot the sea lions from a distance
G.
The most thrilling lighthouse to visit. Enjoyable walk with poems and seals and stunning views
C.
Awesome view. Arrived at 6pm, seemed to be the perfect time for photographie with the moon starting to rise
M.
Excellent short walk to the lighthouse with stunning views.
D.
Nice view, best time to come here is in sunset or sunrise
J.
Short 10min walk from the carpark with amazing views
S.
Fantastic wee walk and stunning views.
R.
Stunning place. Would be great to view this on a wild weather day.
M.
Don't miss it if you have time to drive along the Soutern Scenic Route
N.
Very windy but beautiful place!
S.
So to reach the point, it is a bit of hike around the steep mountains. It took us 45 minutes one way if I remember correctly. The timings are written just before you enter.
The amazing views and the trees that have been bend by the wind are an amazing view not to miss. The hike is pretty good and there are people here and there. There are e a few ups and downs but mostly flat. The area around the lighthouse is an extension man made bridge and you get amazing views of the sea and the small mountain looking rocks protruding out of the sea. If you are lucky you might see some seals and penguins lazing around down below. I think these spots are like nature at its best. The parking lot for this is pretty big and there are decent views from there as well.
I think you think about infinity when you are in it!
R.
Gorgeous view, worth the drive
T.
Our group really enjoyed our visit to Lighthouse. Great views the bush on the side of Path is so nice.
Car park has plenty of room.
Would go back.
W.
Wow, stunning sunrise, a good spot to see seals. Don't forget to bring your binoculars with you... On the way to the lighthouse there is a bay to watch the rare yellow-eye Pinguins, best time mornings or evenings. Also a good location for stargazing and taking pictures from the lighthouse and night sky
C.
Amazing view very beautiful place
S.
Easy walk and great views .. specially on a beautiful day.
J.
Beautiful spot! Was a misty day but definitely would return, worth the drive/ detour!
R.
This was a unique experience walking along the track to the lighthouse, with a steep drop way down to the sea far below. We heard the child like cries of the Fur Seals down there. At first we thought there were people down there! The lighthouse itself stuck up like a warning finger above the rocky "teeth" that stood up out above the waves waiting for an unsuspecting ship.
T.
fantastic views. Great to see DOC staff and volunteers maintaining it.
S.
Breathtaking!
I.
Lovely views and walk to it. Great seeing the seal pups too.
C.
Wonderful place to spot seagulls & seals. Easy walk too.
M.
Stunning view at dusk. Takes 20-min walk from car park.
N.
Stunning views. Love it.
m.
If you are unfit, elderly, chronically ill or disabled this walk will be a bit of a challenge, some photos are a bit decieving. It is 900m each way with both up and downhill bits on each journey. Bring ability aids like walking sticks or canes to make the walk easier. Not chair or scooter friendly, mostly gravel but wood slates and steps with wire on top at the end(watch your sticks dont go through the gaps!) Absolutely worth the effort if you are able. Wish there were more chairs on the journey to rest and look out at the view. 100% recommend!
P.
Beautiful lighthouse and stunning views of the ocean! 😊👍
C.
Beautiful spot. A must do when down south.
V.
Mint nugget point location. Amazing views.
R.
Amazing views!
R.
Well worth the short trek out to the Lighthouse!
A.
One of the best short walks in NZ.
Easy track, stunning views... spectacular.
Look for the seal pups swimming in the pools half way down...
N.
Incredible views. Worth the walk
A.
Walking along this big hill you get a wonderful view of below and the rocks at the end are beautiful, sure the lighthouse isn't amazing but people come here for scenery of nature and definitely is a top favourite. It's a decent walk, steep at times.
W.
Awesome views of the ocean, sea birds and seals. The walk from the carpark is do-able by most and quite a pleasant stroll.
T.
Excellent views and if you take your binocs plenty of seals etc.
V.
Awesome walk, amazing view
C.
Nice walk to the light house. Not too long and the views are worth it.
I wouldn't want to go on a particularly windy day as the track isn't railed all the way and is close to the edge.
M.
A great place for walk and enjoy the quality time with my photography friends while we took some pictures of the Light house. But I enjoyed myself while I can see Fur Lions swimming in their nature "private pool" 😄
S.
Probably the best lighthouse experience I have been to. Went on the sunset with nice drive up to peak along coastal road. Great contrast in oceans between south and north side. You can see baby seals playing in the rock on the walk up to the lighthouse. Not overly touristy given the location. Cool overhang lookout. A bit like Byron bay and twelve apostles combined. Would recommend. Meant to be even better on sunrise.
R.
Beautiful view great walk
D.
Great Spot. Currently restoration in progress, but it's no problem
A.
David Attenborough worthy.
A must.
Breathtaking!!!
G.
Amazing views. The walks not too onerous and is quite sheltered. Quite steep of the track so don't let the kids get to far ahead.
W.
Rugged coast and amazing views. Seals and birds.
M.
Amazing views including some good vantage points to see Fur Seals
C.
A walk to the lighthouse past wind smoothed trees possible seal sightings then the great lookout. You cannot get into the lighthouse.
M.
Stunning panoramas of the Tasman Sea. You can spot lots of seals down below.
S.
Amazing drive in and stunning views. Wind is extremely strong in the area.
D.
Very pretty scenery at the light house. Quick 5-10 minute walk.
N.
Good short wlk, great views.
L.
Unreal place ! Please spend your time in here! This is one of my favorite places in NZ
R.
Nice walk worth visiting
D.
Most scenic route between Dunedin and Invercargill. Nugget point is top attraction, I recommend it. At nugget you can see different colors of sea, it's looking amazing. We saw seal colony.
l.
Magnificent place! Must go
E.
It was a fantastic view of the ocean. The approach on the road gives you some fantastic views of the peninsula. Easy driving with good parking well-signed post. Make sure to take some water with you on a hot day.
J.
A day trip from Dunedin. Lovely part of the world.
O.
Amazing and magic place. Must do if you are heading to the area.
S.
Great scenery with penguins to look out for. Worth a side trip!
P.
The foot path from the car park to the light house is well maintained and so it needs to be for the number of people making the walk. There are some good photos to be had as you walk along the foot path. Look down into the rocks at the bottom of the cliffs and those with good eyes will be able to see the seals playing or basking in the sun There is a good platform around the back of the light house that even has a couple of benches to sit on. We visited in the afternoon with the sun behind us, it really lit up the islands.
s.
Great spot to visit. Make sure to take your camera along.
Not a difficult walk at all.
C.
what a view! its an incredibly beautiful place. it worth the drive there on a very windy road.
I.
Imagine those nuggets were chicken! Anyway, this spot is a scenic photo paradise.
A.
Amazing views. Well maintained.
K.
Beautiful rugged place we were lucky we had a sunny calm day. Short walk to lighthouse. Wind carved trees, shear cliffs, giant kelp, lighthouse. Can see seals but way below on rocks tiny need binoculars to see properly.
J.
Great views and lots of wildlife. A chance to experience NZ as it once was.
H.
Wonderful scenery
J.
We were able to see lots of seals, sea lions, dolphins and even a whale in the bay near the lighthouse. Beautiful place with strong winds so be prepared. I'd say it is advisable to wait for some time and look very closely, as the sea lions have very good camouflage on the rocks and the dolphins come and go.
J.
Awesome place and view
S.
Excellent location. Beautiful scenery. Highly recommended.
S.
Love this amazing place. Must visit
R.
Best place in the south island
A.
One of the best short walks in NZ.

C.
what a view! its an incredibly beautiful place. it worth the drive there on a very windy road.
A.
Raw beauty.
X.
Beautiful ocean and great view.
C.
Absolutely amazing and worth the detour. It can get windy up there and it is a little bit of a walk from car park to the lighthouse itself. There are public toilets and plenty of photo opportunities. I can imagine it can get really busy here during peak tourist period. No drones allowed :(
J.
Gorgeous landscape, picture perfect even you are not a photographer. Long walk from the parking to the lighthouse, but it is definitely well worth it. Toilet facilities at the parking and a few picnic tables along the way.
M.
A beautiful place, you feel like at the end of the world. Nice to see the sunrise, be sure to check the forecast often because it changes a lot. Plus, all the photos of this place you know are taken from the top of the cliff, which is quite a dangerous climb. Don't recommend after rain, some people climb there anyway though.
B.
A New Zealand highlight. The place is beautiful. We took time to look around and saw fur seals far below on the rocks sunning themselves. There are plenty of birds and for the patient there may even be yellow-eyed penguins spotted from the hide. Sadly non showed up during our time here.
L.
Well worth the walk
Take a warm jacket
H.
Spectacular place with a fantastic view
W.
Enjoyed taking my 4 year old on this walk. Be mindful of the cliffs and your eye on the younger ones but definitely worth the walk
A.
Beautiful beach... amazing view
S.
Great view. Be careful with the drive there as it can get foggy.
Too bad there were unfriendly tall tourist there to spoil my day. I had my timelapse video set up for a good 20mins before they arrived and the sunrise. I politely asked them to move out of the frame as they were right in the centre of it but was simply told 'good luck with that'.
Be early. The view just before the actual sunrise is better :)
P.
Worth the drive if you're going anywhere near
G.
Amazing. You perhaps find details hiding fur seals under rock hills
H.
Beautiful location for a lighthouse and amazing coastline! The best thing is that it is located just around the corner of the Roaring Bay where you can see penguins in the wild! :)
c.
Breathtaking. A must see if in South Island.
X.
The top spot for visiting tourists to NZ, by numbers. Worth the time taking the 20min walk to the lighthouse (take care on windy days, as the path can be hazardous - Keep to the LEFT). Please also note that as of February 2019 drones are NOT allowed, your images posted online will suffice as evidence of breaking the law, allowing DOC to prosecute you. Enjoy the place/s, take care of the landscape and respect others. Say "Hello" and smile.
V.
Absolutely stunning! Nice drive and much nicer walk out to the lighthouse. The "nuggets" are very cool and there are sea lions or seals that flop around on the rocks
H.
One of my favourite place which i have visited..
T.
A bit of a walk from the carpark, but wow, to view those nuggets in the water at the lighthouse. A must do! Turquoise water, seals. Do it!
H.
So beautiful, must-see !
B.
Very wet and windy today but this is a spectacular spot. Lots of interesting birds including spoonbills. A number groups of seals also on the shore. One seal family had their young playing in a small pool just behind the tiny beach
L.
A picturesque walk from the carpark along the cliffs to the observation platform. Great for photography, usually seals just about everywhere below. In fact when we were walking we thought a baby had fallen down because there was constant screaming - turned out to be those seals :/. The platform at the lighthouse offeres great views towards the pacific and the rocks in the sea below.
G.
Beautiful place, go here, it is a very interesting place! Beautiful view ;)
S.
About a 1km walk from carpark. Beautiful views. Saw a few sea lions below by the rocks. Not able to go up lighthouse. No drones allowed.
R.
Nice place and beautifull view of the "nuggets"
A.
A quick easy 40min round trip from the carpark to the lighthouse and back, including quick stops to the lookout.
This lovely little trail also has a picnic table, if you wanted to stop by and absorb the views whilst tucking into a packed lunch.
There are vault toilets in bathrooms, available at the end of the carpark.
Some parts of the cliff sides are steep and are exposed so be aware of young children.
J.
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME...SPECIAL...MAGICAL...RUGGED UNSPOILT...SUPER AS
C.
Stunning. A 900m easy walk to lighthouse for outstanding views, highly recommend this, not to be missed.
M.
Beautiful place! Scenic road from Kaka point to Nugget Point. Stunning view from the lighthouse and great atmosphere due to all the seabirds and the seals you can see on the rocks in the ocean. To see details of the wildlife you should bring binoculars.
K.

Great and easy walk to the Lighthouse with a good chance to see seals. Breathtaking Views!
T.
Amazing scenery, truly spectacular
K.
A nice view of the nuggets. Also worth going to Roaring bay, just around the corner to see the yellow eye penguins.
L.
Another whow visit in New Zealand. The just stand in awe of the sea changing colour from light blue, white, royal blue and huge rocks piercing this amazing colour palette, left me speechless. It is worth the long, steep walk 100 times over. New Zealand is a beautiful country and exceptional people walk this special Island.
J.
Worth the visit. Absolutely beautiful
Z.
Stunning photos are easily to take over here.
s.
Beautiful part of southland with a beautiful walk. Loads of sea life on both sides of the walk with sea lions and penguins to see. Would recommend a wind layer as it's pretty windy up there.
A.
Walk is lovely from carpark..about 800m to lighthouse and slightly uphill but not steep. Well worth the stroll..carparking can be at a premium..views are fantastic and the sounds of wildlife are wonderful..
B.
Sealed road to a free car park. Road is quite narrow be prepared to stop. Non-flush toilets at the car park. Amazing views wear good boots!
V.
A good walk up to the lighthouse looking for seals on the way. Great view.

This was one of my wife's dream photo ops. She had been looking at pictures on Pinterest for months and this was definitely one of the spots she marked as a must go. In person it's even cooler looking, and if you're coming from or going to Currio Bay then you definitely have to stop here. Such a great view.
R.
Awesome place. Must see for all tourists doing free Catlins Tour. The rock nuggets are a treat to the eyes. Further sea lions and seals are also seen passing around in the wild. A great experience.

It's 900 metres from the carpark to the lighthouse. That's 900m of stunning scenery, all the way there and back. You can't get those views in a gym. Worth it.
