Reviews of Ernest Kemp Cruises
G.
I’ve been doing this tour since I was a baby, always a beautiful tour of the lake. Great commentary and nicely priced per person.
You get a 2hr return trip but also some great historical information. They even stopped for 5-10mins so some of the kids could have a quick dip once we got to the carvings.
Didn’t realise you can also go right to the front of the boat as well.
Loved my adult experience of this cruise.
Highly recommend if you are wanting to see some of Taupo’s treasures.
It would pay to book ahead of time and check weather, they currently have 2 sessions a day.
A.
Cute little boat, really nice skipper with lots of info and commentary, really awesome crew man, helpful and friendly, was a good morning, pity the mountains were clouded over but was still magical... Definitely recommend this company for a ride out to the rock carving... Amazing time..
J.
Customer service off the chart. Beautiful cruise round the lake on the way to the carvings. Beersies on offer. Knowledgeable crew. Highly recommend.
C.
Absolutely amazing experience! Even on a cold brisk morning it is definitely worth the time if you're in Taupo! Not only going to see the Mine Bay Maori Carvings but just getting to go around the lake and hear about the different places! 100% recommend!!!
e.
10/10 staff, very kind and accommodating. The boat is so lovely and comfortable. Our trip was in the rain and was still great, even outside. Informative skipper. Great views. Thanks, I'd recommend this boat and trip
M.
Very lovely tour cruise. Linda was very accommodating and was a good host. 😊 I highly recommend this tour. As per Linda, it's best to go on a 10:30am or 2pm tour. 😊
H.
The experience itself is brilliant had such a great time taking in the surroundings and the great 📸 the service was good 😊
S.
Knowledgeable and friendly staff, and a great way to explore and see the rock carvings up close.
K.
Staff were lovely, boat was clean and tidy, the maori rock carvings were beautiful. I just found the cruise rather boring if I'm being honest. The cruise takes you south east along the lake to the carvings and there's really not much to see. If you're looking for an easy relaxing cruise however, this is for you.
S.
A great trip, with knowlegable tour guides. Friendly service. As a visitor to Taupo for 30 years I can't see why I hadn't done this earlier. Highly recommended.

Found a deal for this on BookMe, so we decided to do this yesterday. My son absolutely loved it. The staff friendly and didn’t treat it like ‘just another tour of the day’ that they have repeated many times. They made it feel very welcoming and had good knowledge of what they were talking about. Even recommending other activities for fellow passengers. Great way to promote Taupo business :-)
They have complimentary tea, coffee and cookies on board. Can also purchase wine or beer to enjoy on the ride back.
I enjoyed the scenery, with us making sure we went around all parts of the boat. My son got to steer the boat and got a little certificate for it. Was really nice to see him super excited about something new.
Happy we chose to do it :-)
K.
I like the tour boat, she is unique and traditional, you can't get any other here. The tour staffs are friendly, and the tour program is great. This tour took us about 2 hours. Coffee/tea and some biscuits are prepared in the boat during the tour. We have a great and relax time here. Of course, the sceneries are superb!
P.
This was a lucky pick for us. Booked on a whim and we couldn't have been more satisfied. The crew was great and the boat was freshly overhauled. Go for the cocktail cruise on a nice sunny day and you'll have the best experience possible. There was pizza, wine and beer and plenty of time to admire the rock carvings and the landscape surrounding Lake Taupo. If there were cruises with pizza in the morning, we would go on these as well.
S.
Excellent service! Claire and Ed contributed so much to our amazing time cruising on Lake Taupo. First 2 drinks are complimentary. 3rd alcoholic drinks onwards were cheaper than most pubs around (5-10NZD) per glass including wines. Worth the price!
N.
Love this cruise!! 2nd time on it tonight for me & my partner, took my mum & my nana who also had an amazing time. Great crew, pizza, beer & wine. Choose the cocktail cruise on a beautiful sunny day and you won't regret it!! 🥇🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Note: photos are from the first trip 1year ago, but tonight was exactly the same. Great experience all round!
T.
The journey out near the bays was lovely and sedate, it was fun going past Acacia Bay and trying to pick out our bach. Then our trip hit a really rough patch, but the staff member crewing the cabin was amazing! He knew what was happening with every single passenger on board: who needed a cup of water or a towel, where all the kids were, and who really needed to eat their complementary biscuits. The captain also took a more sedate route back, which definitely helped a few people! We didn't get to spend much time at the carvings because of the choppiness, but the cabin crew guy really made the journey worth it!
J.
Awesome cruises available for low prices if you don't have a boat of your own, ask the host questions as they are very knowledgeable of the area
S.
Very cool cruise, and the 5pm trip with a complimentary drink was awesome as well as being able to buy a few more.. us kiwis need to do these things.
M.
We had such a great time, we had a bit of a windy day but that just added to the tour! Very nice drinks, very friendly staff. Would recommend to anyone heading to Taupo. Thanks so much!
C.
A lovely comfortable ride out to the rock carvings, time for a few pictures and a cuppa and also some yummy complimentary biscuits and then you head back. Stunning views of the mountains as you cruise along also. A fantastic little trip. Well worth it.
D.
A great tour out to mine Bay to view the mãori carvings. Crew were great, worth the money for the 2 hour boat trip. Well recommended.
A.
We had a picture perfect autumn day, the crew were great, it was a very informative and comfortable 2 hr round trip with our 2 year old. There was plenty of time spent getting photos of the carvings and mountains. Nice to also have a cuppa on board.
O.
Cute little steam boat, very clean and comfy, hot tea, coffee offered on board as part of the experience. Team is young, but very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Was great at cooler weather as you could stay warm inside.
H.
The experience itself is brilliant had such a great time taking in the surroundings and the great 📸 the service was good 😊
J.
Thanks for a great trip. Even enjoyed the thunderstorm.
Only issue was getting Kara back off the boat. Thanks for accommodating our dogs
A.
Was pretty awesome doing the sunset cruise. Service was great and the comentry was very informative.
J.
Nice 20km cruise. $60 for two. Maori carvings interesting story. Captain spent time explaining.
A.
Dog friendly. Linda just made the trip. She is the icing and the cherry. Thank you your service just made an already memorable trip that bit better. Id recommend for many reasons! The dog friendly treats, the human friendly wine ☺️ just the trip itself and the information given. USE THESE SERVICES
K.
this was a lovely boat trip out to see the maori rock cravings.. helpfully and informative, awesome guys
S.
Knowledgeable and friendly staff, and a great way to explore and see the rock carvings up close.
C.
Dog friendly
D.
Nice and relaxing cruise!
Thanks Ernest Kemp cruises for these nice story's about the lake and activities! 😊
D.
Lovely, relaxed evening cruise on the lake with complimentary glass of wine and pizza as we left. Smooth water and interesting commentary on Maori carvings.
A.
Excellent crew. Boat is a bit small but surprisingly not cramped. They limit the amiunt of passengers on board. Once the boat sail its not hot at all
F.
Such a great experience. Captain and crew were amazing and provided exceptional service. The personal touches make a huge difference and I highly recommend Ernest Kemp Cruises for your Lake Taupo excursion.
A.
Adi and her team hosted our family for a private charter to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday.
I give my highest recommendations of the charming Ernest Kemp boat, staff and experience.
This was such a nice way to celebrate a special occasion. Our group was kept to around 30, in order to seat everybody inside comfortably if necessary if the weather was not favourable. And that number was just lovely.
The usual wines, soft drinks and pizzas (and some extra sweet slices!) were provided and very much enjoyed by all. Gluten free pizzas were also offered.
We were able to play out own music over the sound system, but still had some commentary about the Lake provided by the Captain as well. We were also able to use the mic to give speeches.
I wanted to have some special items placed on the boat before everybody arrived (a cake, some flowers and a photo) and the staff were so helpful with this, letting me deliver them earlier in the day and then setting them up so nicely on the boat.
They also provided some extra balloons which were an unexpected touch.
We had some guests who hadn't seen the Maori carvings, so the team made a particular effort to get us around to see them, even though it meant we were going through a bit of choppy water. We all got a bit of rocking and rolling and it was great fun.
I considered the price to be very affordable for a group of this size.
I simply cannot recommend the Ernest Kemp enough.
N.
Really enjoyed heading out on Ernest Kemp, has a bit of character and also when choppy, it's quite a rollercoaster ride out there. Be prepared to get a little wet either up front or out the back but all good fun on a sunny day.
B.
A great day to explore the mighty Hukka falls.Highly recommended.
Kids friendly and fun.
A.
Overall a very nice experience. On a sunny day you would get to see the scenery around the lake and the Maori carvings from a very short distance. The staff on board is super friendly and very informative. I recommend checking "bookme" or "grabone" for cheaper tickets!
W.
The day did not start well, we were treated very rudely by the the young woman in the ticket office. A bit of customer service training required. Once on board the staff were really great, the young lady in the cabin was just lovely. My 4th trip, but enjoyed it, despite the weather being cloudy and cold
K.
Great value for money- we enjoyed our little outing. Be prepared to get a bit wet if you are sitting outside! Also take your togs for a swim at the rock carvings.
M.
Lovely boat trip and very well organised with super attentive staff. Only downside was we couldn’t really hear the commentary over the engine noise.
B.
Great Service, really happy with the wonderful experience, staff is very friendly and helpful. Thank you for allowing my dog on board and treating him so nicely really loved it. Highly recommended this cruise for families and bring your puppy if you want and enjoy the extra ordinary experience.
C.
We went out to the rock carvings on the Ernest Kemp on 2nd Jan, and had a great time.
As well as a really enjoyable cruise on the lake, I was particularly impressed by the crew's efforts to make sure our 3yr old had a fun day - letting her go and meet the captain and 'steer the boat' and then handing her a certificate saying she'd taken the wheel. Colouring in as well for when she lost interest in the scenery.
Thanks for a great trip!
R.
My family and I explored Taupo lake and the rock carvings on 3rd of January 2021. What an awesome experience. The boat is kept immaculately. Very informative. We found the hostess especially knowledgeable, friendly and very accommodating.
N.
Honestly an amazing experience. When no one else wanted to go out because of “rough weather” these guys gave us the opportunity to go out and by the time we got to the rocks, it was super calm and beautiful. Host was so sociable and made us feel super welcome and kept us entertained. So informative and you could just tell that he absolutely loves his job and it showed. If you want to see the Maori carvings, I 1000% recommend going with these guys, you won’t be disappointed
L.
Lovely trip. Friendly staff, interesting commentary and a comfortable boar. Very reasonable price. A pleasant way to spend some time on the lake
A.
Great relaxing cruise around Lake Taupo and to the Maori rock carvings. Well worth it.
M.
Great cruise, beautiful scenery and an awesome crew. Cheers Jordan & co.
P.
The booking staff and boat crew were very nice. The craft itself was clean and well furbished. The cruise was a delightful time to relax and enjoy the water and, on our day, the beautiful weather. And the wonderful carvings in the tradition of the Maori were fascinating. Along the way we made one stop to view an area of Acacia Bay and were given a brief description of the area history.
A.
Had loads of fun and enjoyment at a fraction of price. Linda was a perfect host and made us all very comfortable. Food and drinks were sufficient. The lake was rough however Rob made sure the boat was on even keel and Linda made sure we all are well taken care off. We had a group of friendly people on the cruise and had some great time singing and laughing together.
All in all a fantastic fun filled evening. Its a best value for money and this cruise is not to be missed.
M.
Great experience on the cocktail cruise! Highly recommended!
N.
Excellent couple of hours. Beautiful day, light breeze. Informative cruise, pleasant staff, free beer or wine or soft drink. Maori carving stunning.
H.
I booked a 5-7pm sunset/cocktail cruise based on how pretty the Ernest Kemp boat looked in the photos. What I didn't realise was how limited the outdoor deck space is when the boat is full of people, and I have to say it felt way too crowded for my (admittedly fussy) taste. It was a beautiful evening and all the guests obviously wanted to be outside -- not much point in taking the cruise and then sitting in the cabin. Personally I would suggest they limit the number of guests somewhat more and maybe up the price a bit. But that's a business decision for the owners.
The staff involved were all very pleasant. We had a couple of glasses of wine and they served some pizza. But Domino's pizza.....really? We planned to eat straight after the cruise so it didn't bother me but I'm sure there are suppliers in Taupo who can do better than that!
The cruise itself was pleasant, and it was interesting to get close up to the Maori rock carvings, but at the end of the day it just felt too crowded on the boat. Sorry, I'm sure not everyone would think that way, but that was my takeaway from the trip
B.
One of the best ways to experience Lake Taupō, go on a tour out to the carvings coming back along the lake front. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, boat is old school but well maintained and great for children. If you have young children this boat is better suited compared to some of the other yacht style boats
b.
What a fantastic Trip...lots of information along the way and parked the boat right up against the carving. Excellent crew with wine and pizza on the evening Cruise.
Great value for money and an awesome way to spend an evening. Thoroughly recommended.
I.
Very informative and pleasant tour. Great value with a range of drinks offered on board. So far the sweetest part of our mini holiday. Awesome boat!
N.
Being on the lake is amazing itself, but the captain and crew are lovely and add to the whole experience. Order a glass of wine or a cuppa and sail away for a couple. The carvings are stunning too.
E.
Absolutely awesome trip, absolutely loved it and my son who is scared of boats enjoyed himself and really happy he went. Excellent customer service and well looked after, highly recommended
T.
Nice and easy cruise. Romantic for those that are keen. Carvings are sublime
F.
Nice cruise. We had 'cocktails' which turned out to be glasses of wine - not complaining, just was mislead by the naming. The boat is in ship shape. Comfortable and has two toilets. The cruise is about 20km in the 2 hours, but only about 3-5 minutes in front of the Maori art. Plenty of time to take some photos. Staff friendly with some classic kiwi humour style safety chat.
C.
Boat is an interesting bit of history. Tour is great. The rock carvings are definitely worth seeing. The crew really looked after us.
M.
It was a great trip. Good value. Good commentary but would like the skipper to learn Te reo for the Maori pronunciations of the places names that we visited. Tauhara (toe Hara).
J.
We had the 5 o'clock cocktail cruise, with over ten minutes of swimming. We cannot praise the experience and the crew enough! The food and drinks as a plus, for the price it was, more than worth it. Also, it was not overbooked or crowded as other cruises we've had over the years. Thumbs up all the way!!!
E.
Enjoyed a quick trip out to the Maori rock carvings. They were carved in 1976, so not super old but still impressive. We enjoyed the commentary on the boat and the views of the lake. We brought our 6 month old baby along without a problem. Hot tea and coffee offered. We were able to get a same day booking which was nice, although it was low season so may not be possible in summer.
T.
Absolutely nice! A vintage pretty boat with a cool atmosphere. On the cocktail cruise at 5pm you pay $44pp and get a 2 hours drive, flatrate beer and wine drinking, pizzas and a desert. Definitely worth !! Very friendy staff
S.
Everything was wonderful from start to finish. Brilliant afternoon. Thank you Ian and Mark and the lovely lady in the office. Very good cruise and very informative.
M.
We took the 9am early sail. Just us and another small group on board. Great weather, views. Staff v friendly. Took photos for us. Implementary cookies and tea.
J.
An excellent morning. We got really close to the rock carvings excellent views throughout. If you have a baby though bring a carrier as there is not room for a stroller on the boat.
J.
WOWWWW !!! What an experience...
Thanks to the skipper and stewardess for making this trip comfortable and amazing..
MASSIVE SHOUT OUT to the owner for allowing us to bring our fluffy little companion "LOLLY" but not only that the big bag of Xmas doggy treats our Lolly was gifted with when time to collect our tickets. To let our baby aboard was enough for us but to receive a bag of treats was overwhelming and we can't thank you enough . We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion and wouldnt hesitate to go again next trip to Taupo.
Thanks Earnest Kemp tours.
W.
Great cruise, and the crew was so nice. Captain was so good, telling stories around surrounding area, and the girl who was helping him (I don’t remember her name but she was looking a beat like Jenifer Lopez) she was so nice as well. Honestly that was very very beautiful day and time. BTW- as it was very windy, they advices all people that it might be not easy cruise for those with sea sick, so if anyone want to get refound can do this.
I.
Super friendly staff, super accommodating. All jnckuded: tea coffee ☕, cookies and colour-in for the kids including some bread to feed the ducks 🦆. Super clean and top notch boat too. Anytime agaín. :-)
M.
These guys are great, slow little boat that chuggs its way along the coast line. Then over to the carvings. Great way to see Taupo from the lake. Tea and coffee are on board as well as a toilet. Well recommended!
K.
Really great tour. Ian, the skipper, was very funny and a skillful pilot. Kiara and Linda were super lovely hosts regularly coming and checking that we had all we needed. Would definitely recommend. Soundtrack was on point.
R.
Great replica steam boat with knowledgeable friendly staff.
E.
Lovely cruise on the lake, very informative
W.
2 hours on a boat, unlimited tea/hot chocolate, delicious cookies and complimentary beer or wine. AND we also got to see the Maori rock carvings up close and personal! What a sweet experience. If you love sweet experiences, then I would highly recommend.
O.
I had fun on the ride with lots of waves.
The captain and staff are very knowledgeable of Taupo and landmarks.
D.
5 of us went out for the cocktail cruise including 86 year old mother. Wine, beer and pizza and enough. Didnt feel like they were scimping. Great value for money and lovely friendly staff who were very attentative making sure we were all 'well fed and watered". We all enjoyed our evening. Thankyou. 🤗🤗🤗
p.
We had taken the day tour from Queenstown to Milford Sound which included the cruise. Very well managed. The guide cum driver was a young chap, very informative and hilarious. Enjoyed the entire experience. Highly recommend it.

B.
We had a very good experience with this cruise.
D.
Nice comfy cruise.. Educating tour. Enjoyed my time :)
M.
Real friendly staff, nice boat, we were very unlucky with the weather so we couldn't stick around at the carvings for long. Would have been nice to get a little more info about the carvings and Maori carvings and meaning in general.
J.
Amazing trip. This is a must do if you're coming to Taupo. Great team and experience. Thanks guys!
R.
Wonderful tour. Awesome work from Jordon keeping the boat off of the rocks when in the rough areas on the lake. No cups for a coffee and no staff member visible.
S.
Enjoyed it, though it is quite a long tour. Lots of interesting facts I did not know about Lake Taupo. Was a little disappointed that as soon as we pushed off the first announcement was "so, just to let you know, these carvings are not that old..." Didn't know that, slightly disappointed, but it was still impressive to see the rock carvings.
L.
The cruise/boat ride was fun, but the lake seemed like an ocean. Lake Taupo made our ride adventurous for a few minutes due to strong waves and windy weather.
M.
Lovely day the weather was fantastic and the backdrop of the hills was awsome id recommend it to anyone going to taupo lovely old boat and captain and crew were cool id do it again in a heartbeat
S.
Gat trip friendly helpful stadd
T.
Sunset cruise was amazing! Weather was lovely, drinks, pizza, sweets and awesome views of the Maori carvings! Definitely recommend this one!
F.
Captain has an amazing sense of humor. We booked the 5pm cocktail cruise that comes with pizza, mini desserts, wines and beers. Hot beverages are also available. The price is the same as the 10am and 2pm ones.
D.
A fantastic 2 hours on the waters of Lake Taupo. Hospitality was fine & being given a chance to jump off the boat for a dip in the lake was awesome. Well priced.
A.
Pleasant 2 hour cruise around part of Lake Taupo. very informative narrative.
I would only say that more out door seating would be advantageous
W.

Third time on this cruise and I still love it. Very knowledgeable. Lovely views. Lovely boat. Thank you. :) Still lovely in wet weather.
R.
Great, and exceptional service. The speakers are not very good so could not hear our guide over noise of engine.
J.
Classic ol'school boat in green that goes cruises at the famous site which is the Rock Carving. Check with your local holiday park if they have any discount flyer for Ernest Kemp as you can save about 10% for your cruise ticket!!

A 2pm-4pm trip we were never bored with: unpredictable conditions until a leisurely return with the wind behind us; passing sheltered bays packed with swimmers and boats; the overcast afternoon light showcasing the carvings beautifully; good conversations with other travellers; and a hot cup of tea with shortbread.
We were warned before we started that it would be rough so we could pull out and get a refund. But everyone stayed and in the end only one passenger vomited!
The Ernest Kemp is admirably suited to the task. It looks like it is a century old but it was actually built c1980 and handled the conditions well.
The energetic southerly wind made the outward leg choppy but the skipper did a good job of getting us there as comfortably as possible which is why we used the full two hours.

Nice the boat and the friendly staff that offers participants hot drinks and biscuits.
Beautiful the tour that led us to see ancient engravings on boulders that are found in some areas of the lake otherwise not visible

(Translated) I chose a special sailing at noon. After an hour and a half of sailing, I went directly to the Maori rock carvings, took a picture, and then drove back to the pier. In addition to being able to see some unseen landscapes, there is nothing special about it.

(Translated) We did the 5 o'clock tour and were thrilled! It's a nice little boat (about 25 passengers) and there are free drinks and pizza included, as well as little treats. The crew is very nice and accommodating, the captain tells a lot of interesting things about the environment and history during the trip and maneuvers very closely to the carvings. Overall great experience and very cheap compared to other New Zealand activities.

(Translated) Very idyllic. Very friendly and attentive staff. Free wifi, biscuits for refreshment and free hot drinks. You saw Taupo and its surroundings very well from the lake, as it drove both sides. We were at the sight until everyone had taken enough photos. Very romantic. I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to be comfortable and has the time.

Sehr idyllisch.
