Reviews of East by West Ferries
G.
Always a pleasant journey across the harbour, $12 and no extra charge for cycles, staff polite and friendly.
S.
We took ferry on Saturday morning to visit Matiu/Somes Island.
We absolutely enjoyed our ride. Convenient and inexpensive way enjoy city views from water.
We purchased our tickets from counter for return trip costing $25 PP. It was quick to get tickets as there was no queue. There was no need to book in advance unless it a large group.
Boarding started 10 minutes before departure, and we took upper deck for good views.
Ferry have a small café/bar where you can get some snacks, coffee, beer etc. It also have separate washrooms.
You can check timetable online or at office.
Staff was friendly and warm.
Overall, a pleasant ride with amazing views.
D.
Great service and beautiful view of the city skyline. Wasn't the best day to be out on the water but crew were very professional. A great day out for the family.
H.
They provide a great service that not only gets you across and around Wellington Harbour, but also delivers to Matiu/Somes Island. The ferries are comforable with both undercover seating and an outdoor viewing area on the upper deck. Awesome on a sunny Wellington day. As well as delivering us safely to our destination, we also saw dolphins playing in the harbour. The main city terminal is easy to find right on thr edge of the CBD. Lots of fun, great service and even free off peak if you are a gold card holder. Highly recommend you check it out!!
W.
The boat ride is a fun attraction in itself whilst also offering transport to Eastbourne. This should/could be up on the list of things to do with all the better known tourist attractions in Wellington. I recommend getting a seat on the upper deck for the best experience
T.
Great way to cross the harbor for a half day return trip. Head out from Queens Wharf to Days Bay and stop off at Somes Island one the way there or back. So looking forward to New Zealand's First Electric Ferry!!
h.
A very good service. It's a nice experience altogether.
- The boat has bathroom.
- A top deck for view.
- A pantry.
- Very friendly staff.
M.
Great fun & enjoyment on a sunny day with little or no wind. Days Bay return - Adult $22, student $18 & child $12 or buy one get one free with the entertainment book. Watch out for penguins on the way. Some ferries go via Matiu Somes Island
K.
Amazing little trip from one side of the Harbour to another with a stop over at Matiu/Somes Island.. Highly recommended.. A nice swim at days bay is also pretty unbeatable.
T.
It was a gorgeous day, sitting outside of portofino's Restaurant, which is next to east and wear ferries, if you are ever in need of WiFi, portofino Restaurant is a living, and the food is amazing! Try it our, they also cater for takeout, due to covid...
W.
It was a lot of fun gng to Soames Island, would go again anytime,
T.
Used their service today to go over to Days Bay. Ran on time and friendly staff on the boat who chatted to patrons during embarkment and disembarkment with clear instructions on how we would be disembarking. On the way was a stop at the Matiu/Somes Island. Clean and offer of beverages available. I'd definitely use again.
K.
Wonderful service. Friendly deck hands and usually great conversation with a fellow passenger.
Best way to commute ever
A.
The staff are superb. Great service, beautiful journey to the heart of the harbour. Just marvelous! Must do in Wellington
L.
Nice trip but keen to see the electric ferry in operation
P.
What a disappointment to be charged for the return journey from Day Bay to Wellington on the 3.00 ferry. The company offers free travel for Gold Card holders until 3.00, but there isn't any travel service from 1.00 until 3.00 anyway. They are operating a weekend service but not the fares. Conning the seniors. Thanks for nothing.
The company has contacted me to apologize for the error and offered a refund. I understandably accepted.
J.
Love a trip across the harbour, friendly crew and always greeted with a smile, drinks and snacks are available to purchase, 5 Star experience, Days Bay and Eastbourne make an interesting visit and a round trip can be completed on the 83 bus, Somes/Matiu Island is a popular stop off and well worth a visit.
H.
Nice trip over to Somes Island, definitely recommended if your in Wellington. Especially on a nice sunny day!!
C.
The ticket office is an enhanced kiosk. Their ferries are fine and have some snacks on board and a great viewing platform on top on nice days. Their destinations are wonderful however.
N.
OUR GROUP THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE EVENING HARBOUR CRUISE(SIX60&CHINESE NEW YEAR). STARTED WITH PRE-DINNER DRINKS AT THE FOXGLOVE. ONCE WE BOARDED WE HAD APPETIZERS AND MORE DRINKS(BUT ONLY HAD 1 BOTTLE OF PINOT GRIS ON-BOARD :-(). WHILE WE WERE ANCHORED AT THE ISLAND, WE HAD A BBQ DINNER FOLLOWED BY DESSERT. MUSIC AND DANCING WAS ENJOYED BY ALL DURING THE REST OF THE CRUISE. VERY PROFESSIONAL AND FRIENDLY CREW. THANK YOU.
I.
Great trip, friendly competent staff. The boat was clean as were our seats and there was no rubbish around
F.
Staff were a bit unenthusiastic but overall professional. Boat looks a bit run down. I don’t recommend using the female bathroom, water in the toilet will be forces upwards throughout the journey. Bar and snacks available but at above-average prices.
W.
I'm not really a boat person normally but the trip I went on was extremely smooth. Staff were awesome to. Thank You Team.
S.
Amazing, relatively cheap way to see Wellington!
This city's best views are from the water, it's an absolute must- pack a lunch, bring your swimmers and make a day of it, see Matiu/Sommes Island and Days Bay
G.
Friendly, helpful staff. Our grandson thoroughly enjoyed his first experience on the ferry.
r.
Great day trip...dogs permitted on outside decks. Friendly staff, well worth a trip.
C.
The best way to get to town, catch up with your mates on the way to work, unwind after a long day on your way home, no traffic woes, reliable service, timely and cost effective if on a monthly pass and traveling both ways 5 days a week..
M.
An alternative route across the harbour from Wellington's Queen's Wharf to Somes Island and the bays at Seatoun and Eastbourne. And what a ride; it is postcard-scenic when the weather is fine, especially from the top deck! It's a short journey so enjoy the trip if this is not your usual route. Remember to look back as you pull away from QW because the offshore views are just as impressive. The ferry service itself is fast and the crew, pleasant.
G.
Staff are efficient, polite, helpful and caring.
Z.
Wonderful family trip exploring new "local" things in our backyard.
Thank you to friendly staff!
j.
Buy a monthly pass or 10-trip cartel... much better value than single tickets. Coffee, newpapers, beer and wine for sale onboard. If the weather is exceptionally bad, ferries are replaced by buses.
P.
It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the ride from Wellington waterfront to Eastbourne. Wine and bubbles were offered on the boat as well.
L.
Friendly helpful staff, doing their best to get you around the harbor on time. I loved Matiu/Somes Island, especially the kakariki parrots

Wonderful journey to Days Bay, such a lovely harbour on a sun filled day
N.
A good experience but a bit pricey. Bus would be less than half the price. Not as much fun though.
I.
We have taken this ferry many times and always enjoyed the service.
T.
It is the best way to travel to Eastbourne and to Queens wharf.
