I'm giving this 4 stars, as i was disappointed with a few things.
Gentle Annie is a lovely place. But,...
We felt, close to $80 for a powered site, 2 nights, 2 adults was more than any other place we had stayed with similar facilities.
We didnt use the outdoor area, cafe or pizza oven, as we noted they were very crowded always.
We liked ( because of covid) to stsy in our bubble. Noted not alot of socisl distancing going on.
The washing machine is great, but you need more!! Seriously, its nice its free and all, but when you have people NOT using the quick wash, and your 5th in the queue its a very long wait.
You need more sinks in the kitchen. 2 sinks fir the entire camp. Thankfully our caravan was fully equipped and we didnt need to use it. But Ew, those T-towels, please get rid of them, so unhygenic in todays covid world. Lots of people using the one towel.
Its a nice little camp, and lots of options for those that fish, and swim, we enjoyed those activities, as well as the walk from camp up to the bluff, through the maze.
The onsite takeaways were a bonus. It was nice to have that as a treat. Cafe food looked good from a glance. The cafe itself is a great idea made from the old cow shed. Love the pond in the middle of it.
The girl who spent ages helping me choose a T shirt, thank you for taking the time, really appreciated it.
N.
We stayed here for 2 nights in one of the private cabins, so can't say about the main camp ground, but the cabin was first class, very clean and tidy with amazing views of the ocean. Bring your bug spray tho, you'll need it.
S.
Wonderful setting by the pretty rivermouth and beachfront, with beautiful native bush behind it and the sounds of bellbirds singing. The sites were thoughtfully planned and planted for privacy, with future upgrades posted for guests to see. Would definitely recommend staying here to enjoy this lovely part of New Zealand!
N.
Wow! Wh2at an absolute awesome campground! We had such an amazing time. Very impressed with the grounds and facilities. I love the West Coast and will be back again hopefully soon. Thank You
S.
When they say it's possibly the best camping ground in the country they're not jokeing this place is amazing. We could bring our dog and she had room to be a dog! Also the pizza oven is a brilliant activity. Also they have bases and toppings, witch are in my opinion reasonably priced considering the supermarket is a long way away!
G.
Basic, its got everything but definitely not 5 star. They are aiming for a family, backpacker camping ground and are achieving it. Still very much a work in progress.
A.
Amazing place! Great accommodation awesome scenery. Pet friendly can't ask for anything better x
L.
Wow, awesome people, awesome place, loved the hot tub, birthday gluten free cookie, facilities are great and the bush walk maze, lookouts to sea were amazing.
R.
This place is absolutely delightful, any time of the year! I chanced upon it when looking for somewhere to stay after finishing the Old Ghost Road trail. Highly recommend the simple but charming Cheeky Weka Cabin! Communal showers & bathrooms are excellent and clean. Communal kitchen only has minimal utensils so be sure to bring your own. Beautiful setting right on the beach and river mouth. Perfect for a relaxing getaway. I’ll be visiting again that’s for sure!
I.
Jesse, family & his team were fantastic hosts at this beautiful camping ground. Nothing was a problem...... This is the second time we have stayed here & look forward to coming back again & again.
Best Regards,
Ian Kemp & Pam Seymour

We had a great time at Gentle Annie's Campground. Such a lovely atmosphere. Fantastic staff- always super friendly & helpful. Great food and yummy gluten free options. Pizza oven a real plus. We all had such a great time including our kids so we extended our stay. The toilets/bathroom facilities need updating which they are planning to do so definitely would give 5/5 once done. Thanks! Hope to visit again.
K.
Really great family run camp ground. Friendly staff quirky decor great we cafe open 9am to 12 noon daily. Clean facilities and right on the beach. Would come back tomorrow. Did I say what great weather we were having on the coast!.
M.
Wonderful location with very easy access to the beach. Kid friendly with a great playground. Lots of space so your not too close to other campers, great price and overall no real complaints other than lack of bathroom/ toilet facility. Which we understand are being updated this year .
S.
We stayed 4 nights in wonderful weather. They were so helpful. We had to move rooms for another booking and they made that as easy as possible. Clean and flowers in the rooms a lovely touch.
They are planning to build more toilets and showers so they know what is needed. The pizza oven adds an extra fun dimension.
W.
Great location with passionate owners.
I had a long black and an super quality muffin!!
M.
Absolute gem of the West Coast! Amazing campsite with fantastic facilities. Pizza oven and outdoor fire pit is such a vibe! 4G cellphone reception on the powered campsites and decent WiFi. Lovely staff with lots of recycling facilities. Lots of things to do on a sunny or raining day - glow worms, day hikes, beach, soccer and spa pools for hire. Nice to see a campsite run off honesty and manaakitanga. Would love to come back here again soon ☺️
S.
Gentle Annies is a great experience. It’s just so relaxing and the owners and staff are very helpful and friendly. The pizza oven brings people around and you get to know the other campers. Coffee and muffins are great too.
N.
Where to begin... This is such a special place with the best staff, great facilities, plenty of stuff to do around, etc. The location is absolutely stunning, we could not get enough of it. There is plenty of space on the domain, each spot is great. We stayed at some seriously beautiful campgrounds during our trip, but this one was hands down the best best best in our 6 weeks trip through New Zealand. We spent 4 days, wanted to stay forever!! PS the Cowshed bar and pizza oven are awesome :)
J.
Superb location, awesome sunset and average facilities. On our way out some driver didn't give us enough space on the narrow road and we ended up in the ditch . The lady at the office wasn't interested in the least and made us wait to finally give us a tow company infos
Just be aware, the West coast is usually far more friendly....
P.
What an awesome camp site. There's no powered sites so if you need that this is not for you. There's plenty of great spots with a mix right along the river and beach side plus some brilliant sheltered sites. The camp has reasonable facilities but not great facilities. You get what you need and that's part of staying here. It's simple, relaxing and has a wonderful quirkiness that works for us. The cafe is awesome as are the pizzas in the woodfired oven. Well worth a stop in this stunning country spot.
K.
This place is rated third best campsite in NZ and it’s not hard to see why. Gentle Annie runs on the chillest of vibes: park where you like, honesty box for the shower and laundry, no set checkout time, communal use pizza oven, and a beautiful location on the intersection of a river and the sea. It’s relaxation encapsulated. Loved our time here and will definitely make a point to return. What an amazing place!
P.
Great location for a beautiful campground with some great touches such as a pizza oven where you cam make your own wood fired pizza. Nice communal area too. Very quiet when we visited (late Nov) and even the surprisingly few sandflies were not too aggressive!
c.
What a gorgeous place to stay. Wished we could of stayed another night. Dog friendly. Very resonable $. Close to beach and river for fishing. Lots of different spaces to park up in with campervans..caravans and tents.. a few powered sites which need to be prebooked.
Fill up with water before you come. A cafe ☕🧁🍪 and hot food caravan. 🍟🍔
Loved it. A+
M.
Great campsite. Well laid out. Excellent facilities including a pizza oven
S.
We camped in our caravan at Gentle Annie. It was peaceful and beautiful beside the lovely beach. Our dog was welcome so long as she didn't chase the birdlife. We also were lucky enough to catch a kahawai fish for dinner.
L.
Really good place to go swimming and fishing because my friend caught his first fish
D.
Beautiful beach and river side spot close to tourist attractions like Oparara Arches. Great spot to have a fire on the beach to toast marshmallows. Yummy pizzas made in the camp pizza oven with your own ingredients or buy from the cafe. Delicious coffee and muffins from the cafe and best of all fantastic and friendly owners and staff. Highly recommend a stay at this campground
L.
Awesome place! Check it out! It's one of the best camp sites we've ever been. Directly one the sea/river with good fish, planty of space, shower and flush toilets, kitchen, pizza oven to use for everybody and a nice sitting area outside and inside. The staff is really friendly and everything for an unbelievable price. We've finally stayed longer as planned =)
E.
Great people, nice & clean facilities. If you've been craving pizza whilst travelling (no oven in your van?) this is definitely the place to go: the wood fired pizza oven makes for a delicious pizza. Again very nice staff and other guests! Relax atmosphere.
J.
Simply a great place. Great vibe, beautiful location. Pizza oven is nice, but can get very busy. Facilities are good, but I think they need to improve camp-kitchen and build more toilets closer to camping space. Cowshed cafe is super. Free WiFi but maybe slow if too many users. Would definitely return.
C.
This campsite was fantastic and I would totally stay there again. They answered my email promptly and have a great system in place to allow you to arrive at anytime of the day. The kitchen, showers, and bathrooms were clean and easy to use (they even have a outdoor pizza oven and fire pit). The lounge area was well stocked with books and games and there is even a Cafe that runs during the day time. The staff we met were passionate and full of advice on how to make the most of the local area. Thankyou for a great stay.
L.
Such a relaxing piece of paradise. Waking up to lapping waves. Love the pizza oven you can construct & cook your own pizza. Lovely & spacious lounge area for all to chill & charge phone's. Love this place but road in bit narrow & scarey with big caravan
F.
Stayed here for one night and pitched a tent close to the beach. Such a fantastic spot. A bonfire on the beach is a must. Cafe great with yummy looking baking and delicious coffee. Hot showers, $2 for 5 mins. Short on toilets so don't wait until you're busting as you may need to que 😊
M.
Awesome spot to stay one night or even many many more. A friendly environment with great staff. The food is awesome and can make your own pizzas too. Love coming back here to relax back and unwind.
F.
Great place to camp for the price. There's a lot of space to camp, free wifi and a large common area. You can buy freshly made baked goods in the cafe and every evening they fire up the wood pizza oven 🔥🍕😍.
J.
We didn't stay at the camp but we were rescued by the wonderful staff when our campervan was bottom out. Good sorts and lovely spot! We will definitely visit and stay next time.
R.
Beautiful place, friendly people, take the makings for your fave pizza to cook in their pizza oven!! You can buy pizza bases there or make your own. Good rates, good showers and common area(The Cow Shed) yummy coffee and great walks nearby. Awesome driftwood beach, lovely gardens. A lot of hard work has gone into this place!! Rugged coastline!! Stop at Westport for food and grog supplies. Highly recommended. Can be a little windy/soggy for tents, campers or onsite accomodation recommended
T.
Will earn a five star when the new toilet and shower block is done. A classic kiwi destination. Good pies, coffee, pizza oven! Fishing, biking or hang on the beach.
K.
Very relaxing place with a great view. Make and bake your own pizza at the wood oven. You're also allowed to bring your own pizza supplies or dinner in the common area. Everything is on a 'we trust you to pay' base when you take a drink, use the washing machine or take a shower. Lovely people running it. Really worth a visit. Be aware that it is quite basic here.
S.
Amazing. I couldn't believe the good reviews until I experienced it myself. They really love what they are doing here.
$12 pp. Plenty of space and we pitched our tent super close to the beach. You are allowed to make a campfire. Beautiful sunset . They have a great Café, in which you are allowed to bring your own food as well. They have hot showers for $2 for as long as you want. There's a wonderful rubbish recycling system, where you can dump your garbage. You get a cookie on your arrival :-).
They have wifi, but you're asked not to download or stream movies etc.
G.
By far our favorite campground we've experienced in New Zealand. It's got the best vibe & the best staff- Ben & Mandy. Food is healthy & super delicious. They supplied all the fresh ingredients for us to make pizzas, which we cooked in their wood burning oven. We parked our camper van right where the river meets the sea & slept like babies. For breakfast I had a killer Americano & some of the best muffins I've ever tasted!
C.
Nice camping ground right next to the beach, with a lot of space for tents. Very nice atmosphere, staff is very friendly and helps a lot with walks to do in the area. Toilets are a bit out dated and would need a good makeover, but otherwise it's fine. Free WiFi in the cafe, showers are not free but it's very cheap to stay on a tentsite so can't complain. Wouldn't mind paying a few more dollars and have good bathrooms or free showers though (but that's only a suggestion). Overall very peaceful place. Make sure you go to their bush maze for stunning views on the coast.
P.
I really liked this place, but I'm afraid their popularity will be their undoing unless they add more facilities. There are two showers and dozens (or more!) campers, and they don't shower quickly. If you're showering while someone in the adjacent shower is, you can expect wild fluctuations in water temperature.
Bathrooms are limited as well, with only two stalls (no urinals) for the men's bathroom (can't comment on the women's).
Pizza oven is great.
Road into and out of the place is gravel and takes a bit of time.
J.
Cool little stay, quite a drive but worth it. Showers are $2 and need an upgrade, wood fire oven is cool, food available but kitchen is small and only one washing machine with no dryer
A.
While searching for a wild beach to freedom camp for a night we ended in this place, and as soon as we walked in we decided to stay for a night. Everything was perfect, beautiful location, hot showers, amazing wood fire oven (which we used for 2 nights ) but more important, genuine nice people who make things with love and dedication. We enjoyed that much that we extended for a second night. Stay in this place if you are around the area :)
W.
Absolutely beautiful campsite with plenty of space and wonderful staff. I was a late arrival after the reception closed after a quick call to the number provided I was sorted with a campsite. The facilities are clean fresh and well presented. Would recommend anyone to stop here. 11/10
J.
Awesome camping ground and cafe, owners super friendly and so relaxed. Food is top notch along with their coffee. The facilities are a little meager (shower/ toilets (apparently new stuff on the way soon)), but everything else makes up for that.
Don't be fooled by the weather, Karamea and Granite is not a reflection of the weather at Gentle Annie's, the weather seems to go around the hills leaving Gentle Annie's microclimate much better than the weather prediction.
Dog and children friendly, relaxed - just go there and see for yourself!
M.
beautiful setting, warm and relaxed atmosphere, cafe with good very coffee and tasty sweets, can make your own pizza in a stone oven, large lounging/dining area, wifi - its just a place to relax and unwind!
E.
What a heavenly place to rest during our adventures in New Zealand. After two weeks of traveling, we chose to spend two nights at Gentle Annie's where the crackling fire in the Cowshed kept us cozy warm while the rain poured down outside. We met the friendliest travelers in this lovely lounge; something about the venue encourages people to strike up a conversation with each other. We got caught up on laundry, internet browsing, and work. Thank you for providing such a lovely place to stay.
A.
Despite the terrible weather, this was easily one of the best campsite I visited during 6 months in NZ. Beautiful, well maintained site. Cosy, rustic feel operating on an honesty box system. Surrounded by great walks and scenery. Pizza oven was great. Plenty of friendly local weka.
J.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Very large campsite, many different places to choose, lovely well-maintained grass areas, secluded and in the open. We camped straight on the sandy beach with our two tents, watched the sunset and went to sleep with the sound of the waves. Their Cafe has freshly baked goods, breakfast and drinks. Free wifi, kitchen, bathrooms, very nice showers. Owners and staff so friendly!! Couldnt be more pleased. Very authentic and chill vibes, what an experience for not much $$! $12 a person, so worth it.
R.
Well organised, lots of beautiful spots for setting up Caravan or Tents, clean fresh water & also dump for cassette & grey water.
Fires on beach & all very relaxing 👍👌😎
B.
Love this place. We first stayed here 30 years ago and we have watched it grow and improve without losing it's coastal charm and simplicity. All the houses have their own special features and are very comfortable.
A.
It's the west coast as I remember it from childhood when my parents used to bring us for summer holidays; a river, the sea, driftwood, coloured stones big blue skies, fish, cicadas, palm trees, weka, wood pigeons. Lots of accommodation options nestled into the surrounding bush, owners are warm relaxed and trusting, cafe serves good food and coffee and its dangerously comfortable....so tempting to just sit and read a book and eat warm homemade apple muffins rather than going out and exploring the surrounding wilderness !
G.
Great place to stay. A very homely feel and not expensive. The cafe has delicious home made muffins:). You can get a surf next to the river mouth when the river is not flowing too strong.
S.
We came across this place kind of by accident we were in the area on holiday in our camper and had just been and partly walked the Charming creek walk before we lost too much light. We pulled in after dark and were greeted by Jesse who was lovely. He gave us a quick rundown of the place and its history (as we were interested). There was free wifi and a great little communal area. We parked our camper and unfortunately overnight the weather turned. There were plenty of walks to do nearby including Gentle Annie beach walk that we were looking forward to doing. With the change in weather we packed up and headed south, figured it was better to be traveling in bad weather than be stuck inside. Our camper got bogged on the way out from all the rain and Jesse kindly towed us out and with a wave and a smile we were back on our way (sorry about the wheel marks on your grass). We will come back next trip and leave some more time to stay and explore the area. I recommend stopping here if you get the chance the friendly welcome and quality of the facilities was great!
K.
Beautiful place with amazing vistas. A nice low key positive place to escape from the world of chaos and come to collect your thoughts. Incredible vibes and the host are magnificent people who are more than willing to go the extra mile or two for you (eg, fresh baking each day, free showers, great conversation). A must go to for anyone who enjoys the low key gentle energy surrounded by beach and bush
J.
Just an absolute pleasure to stay here . Nothing was to much trouble . Good quiet vibe . Deserves all the support it can get . Will definitely be telling anyone travelling this way to call in & stay .
k.
Lovely camp ground. Great for children swimming jet boats. Can have a dog there kids loved it had no issues what so over such a cruzy wee place. There is a long gravel road to go down to get there unfortunately you get the odd few cars tht go to fast down there but overall love the place and I'll be back
D.
Really nice camping side. One of my favorite in NZ. There are a lot of walks and you have the beach close to you. The coffee is lovely and the staff is really friendly and helpful!!
T.
This is great place to be feeling attached to the nature. Mountain and Ocean view at the same time. friendly owners and family. good Wifi. and fire place. Going for walk on the beach to pick up drift woods for firewood pizza. Speechless sunset with cold beer. awesome place
B.
This place is just great! We enjoyed the lovely and welcoming atmosphere and it felt like home just after settling in. The café is pretty and the coffee (locally roasted!) & baking (homemade!) a real travelers treat! The campground is right on the beautiful and typical West Coast beach and we had a driftwood bonfire there - perfect! Its also possible to make pizza with driftwood in the pizza oven. There’re lots of walks and things to do in the area, so we stayed a couple of nights to explore the coastline. WiFi worked well, too. Great value! We‘ll be back!
L.
Beautiful campside with amazing view on the sea. 12$ a night involves free wifi, power and kitchen usage. They have a pizza oven and sell 2 pizza bases for 5$, so bring some cheese, tomato and your favourite ingredients and spend some quality time here!
N.
Great hidden little gem on the west coast. A great common lounge where you feel like home. And to top it off buy all the best ingredients to make your own wood fired pizza. Wish there were more spots like this in New Zealand.
J.
Very nice place, though distant to an uncomfortable extend.
12 ppn unpowered, 2 for hot shower, minimal kitchen. Free Wi-fi.
Have nice beach, and river excess at walking distance.
A sports field, and trampoline. Generally very nice staff, and very pleasant coffee shop (area recommendation and books).
I recommend to bring pizza ingredients, for their (free-to-use) pizza-oven.
N.
Gorgeous spot! And hot tubs are AMAZING!! Lovely place Has a special microclimate And Anac caramel biscuits are a must from The Cowshed! Check it out
J.
No powered sites for camper vans, but plenty of space for tent sites and several van spots. The cowshed (lodge/sitting/dining area) is very nice with plenty of places to charge a phone. Free, good, WiFi is available to all guests.
E.
When we first followed our navigation we were like 'is this right?' We drove furder and the landscape and the ocean was so beautiful! Lovely people and snuggly common room where you can sit, have a (delicious) coffee, charge your phone/camera/laptop (very handy as there are no powered sites, but amazing spots to stand though) and even make your on pizza in the woodfire oven (al for a very reasonable price). Off course you can also make your own meal in the communal kitchen. Beautifull beach (even when it rains), also some birds walking around. They also have some nice and handy souvenirs lake a reusable cub that you can 'build' yourself in the colors you like (top of the lit, lit, cub) and even has gentle annie on it.
p.
Thank you Jessica and Jesse for your hospitality once again. We look forward to our 18 days at Gentle Annie each year.It is wonderful. So unlike any other camp. Thank you also to Mandy and Bennie for the wonderful coffee.Jessica does amazing baking to go with it.
Our family stayed in the Riverview Home accommodation and loved it
Love Pam and Kelvin Eddy
S.

M.
An excellent location. Friendly staff. Brilliant cafe and awesome pizzas made with organic ingredients. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and recommend you visit too.
O.
Very nice, clean and cozy accommodation. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If it doesn't fit to your plan for overnight stay, stop by at least for the best coffee, it's worth it :)
M.
It was the nicest camsite ive ever been on my journey trough New Zealand the Community room is a Coffee at the same time with good music. And their cupcaces and sweets are awesome. The people are very friendly you can make pizza in there stone oven every night. The Beach is very close and you have free unlimited wifi.
A.

Gentle Annie's is gem in the west coast. Super friendly, accommodating people. Fantastic location, awesome amenities, great coffee. Stayed in treehouse and rimu lodge. Both were spotless clean, very comfy. Rimu lode is amazing. Spacious, secluded, packed with charm. Amazing deck looking over beach. Primo kitchen, two bathrooms, four rooms and bags of space. Can't reccomend this place more highly. Jesse and the crew will definitely make your west coast experience one to remember.👍👍👍🙂
v.
Friendliest people, delicious baked goods (really, really delicious) and yum coffee, wood fire pizza oven, beachfront camping, a garden maze with lookout, HOT showers, all for a price less than you’d pay for a DOC campsite. Would give >5 stars if it let me 🌟
J.
Great vibe. Relaxed atmosphere. The "Cow shed cafe" does DIY pizzas you cook in the open air communal pizza oven. Wild beach. Hire kayaks for the estuary. Top spot.
k.
We've never stayed at such a friendly and welcoming place. The facilities and common areas are cozy and very unique! Surrounding the sites is a beautiful beach and lots of land for exploring
R.
Beautiful place, great vibe, you can cook your own pizza and the beach is almost privet for you, walking distance for the maze. 3 km gravel road. The most beautiful sunset in New Zealand

J.
Great location, owners super friendly. Try the baking it's the best as is coffee. If you have time buy the piazza ingredients and use the piazza oven
A.
This place is filled with tranquility, hospitality that comes from the heart,
They make you feel as if you are an extension of their family, with a relaxed approach towards making your stay as peacefull as you expect from such an isolated location. It truely is a Sanctuary.
The grounds are kept immaculately, and The Cow Shed Cafe is the perfect compliment to the wildness of the coast, fishing is great, with a coastal inlet a minutes walk away, all you need is a lure, a rod and time on your hands.
There is a Labrynth pearched on a point providing a magnificent veiw of the wild beauty of NZs West Coast.
This place is one of those secrets you only share with those you hold dear.
I hope you find it.
M.

(Translated) Probably the best campsite in New Zealand. Extremely nice owners, a beautiful lounge and at a great price. Despite $ 2 for the showers, it is still cheaper than campsites of a similar kind. The location is very nice and the road easy to drive. The individual pitches offer enough space and everything is very clean and well maintained. The beach is also worth seeing.
(Original)
R.
(Translated) Beautiful small campsite with great parking spaces. The staff is super nice and you immediately feel great. Nice beach, great views, cozy lounge and great pizza oven! Small temperature fluctuations in the shower, but for the price no deduction worth. Rightly one of the most beautiful campsites in New Zealand!
(Original)

(Translated) A super cozy and welcoming place for short or long stays. It has warm or hot showers, toilets, a kitchen, washing machine and the café (open during the high season, but there are very delicious biscuits paid for by Honesty Jar) which acts as a large lounge with a fireplace.
And all for the price of only $ 12 per head and night. Warmly recommended! And a big thank you to the hostess.
(Original)

(Translated) Great campsite. The owners are super nice. The lounge with open fireplace is cozy. The kitchen is a bit small but functional. Has a rural charm.

(Translated) Beautiful facility! Despite bad weather, there is a good opportunity to keep yourself busy in the large lounge. Very nice staff! Everything totally uncomplicated, well-functioning wifi in the lounge :)
Paramedic systems are ok.

Wunderschöne Anlage! Trotz schlechtem Wetter gute Möglichkeit im großen Aufenthaltsraum sich zu beschäftigen. Sehr nettes Personal! Alles total unkompliziert, gut funktionierendes wifi in der Lounge:)
Sanitäter Anlagen sind ok.
C.
(Translated) Super parking spaces, unfortunately only two toilets and two showers and the WiFi is not designed for the crowd (totally overloaded, did not even connect).
But unbeatable for the price.
(Original)
Super Stellplätze, leider nur zwei Toiletten und zwei duschen und das WiFi ist für die Menschemasse nicht ausgelegt (total überlastet, hat sich nicht einmal verbunden).
Aber für den Preis unschlagbar.
