H.Miss 11 had the Sweatheart apple pie. She said maybe it was a touch too sweet with the caramel, but loved it anyway.... I had the Maverick chilli bean and cheese pie. EPIC! Great filling right to the top, nice amount of heat in it and the pastry was very good. Really enjoyed watching them make the next batch. Great service too.
N.The bacon and egg pie is really nice! A different creation to the traditional bacon and egg pie which adds lots of flavour and variety.

D.Fantastic pies and fantastic place! Not your average pie shop. The pies are generous in size and taste great. Coffee is good too. Love the vintage look of the interior. We ate inside as it was wet and rainy out and we were amazed at the times we heard the staff say, the next batch of pies will be out in x number of minutes, as they had obviously run out. The commander seemed to be the most popular. That’s what my husband had and he rated it 10 out of 10. A must visit the next time we are in Kumeu
G.All the Bakerys were closed during holiday weekend, this was the only place open in Kumeu. A little pricey at $9 for a Mince and Cheese pie (the Commander). But good quality filling with a touch of chilli. Plenty of seating indoors and outside. Saw plenty of customers while I was eating even small ques on a couple of occasions.
m.Wow. So good. Definitely ‘up there’ for top pies. We got two pies to share and compare. The Commander, their classic mince and cheese, and the Bella, Italian lemon and parmesan chicken.
At first look the pastry looks solid and more crunchy than soft but as soon as you cut into it, it folds and crisps up. Unbelievable it keeps it shape with all that stuffing and doesn’t fall apart when they move it. The cheese on the top goes edge to edge and you get good bit with every bite. Both solid pies. If i had to pick which id have again, it would probably the Bella since its unique to anything ive found anywhere else.
Definitely worth the hike out, if not a stop off after the beach.
Edit: came back for a friend visiting from the states. All i got was mmms and wows. Added more photos.

N.You know how there are stories of places in the middle of nowhere that have the best.... well... it is not exactly in the middle of nowhere, but you will have to make a little effort and get outside the city for probably the best real homemade pie you ever had. found it by chance. the locals keep it a secret, but now you all can enjoy it as well! make it a must-stop from or to your next trip. By the way, don’t you dare skip on the sweet pie versions - yammmmm.
B.Pretty phenomenal steak and cheese pie. They were almost sold out when we came through at 11am, so you’d want to get there early on a Sunday if you want the classic. Well worth a stop on the way back from Woodhill.
S.First time here and was skeptical at first paying $10 for The Commander pie (steak and double cheese). The pies are slightly bigger than a standard pie.
However, the pie was delicious; tender steak that has been delicately marinated, quality cheeses used and the pastry was a winner!
Don't be put off by the queue of people, the efficient and friendly staff get through the line fast.
Will definitely be back and next time I'll try The Bella - Italian lemon and parmesan chicken.
TWO THINGS OF NOTE:
- you can get your favorite pie ina family size version to take home
- It is not just takeaway, lots of comfy seating inside... feels like an old school American diner.
A.Loved by people who were previously too snobby to like pies. Would highly recommend.
For those reading this later, they took a 'controversial' public stance, and got hit with several 1 star reviews. Those immediately below me can be safely ignored.
P.The mince and cheese was a good pie and certainly a generous size. Flavour was what you would expect and not complicated by any additional depth or sophistication. Should be around $6, was $10. Sausage roll had great flavour but was underfilled at one end. $7. So overall, underwhelming.

A.Oh man, *never* expected such a great pie shop in Kumeu! Fifty or so years ago I went with my family to the Kumeu Show, and ate watermelon. Now I go to Kumeu to eat pie with a superb pastry casing. There's a range of meat pies as well as a vegetarian - we had beef and the bean vege, with salad - and can be followed by sweet desert pies; we shared a plum. Coffee was fine.
Very pleasant staff and cosy inside seating. A good choice!
T.We drove right past this place on the way to paintball and I was still feeling like it would've been a good stop so I facebook stalked and luckily it was open and still cranking on our way back home so we stopped and boy, what a treat.
We had the mince n cheese and steak n cheese and shared a saussy roll. All were a solid 5/5. Such a good amount of cheese and flaky af pastry.
Also got a canele or something dessert which was great to nosh back sitting in traffic getting outta the town.
B.It's easy to miss on your way through Kumeu but this little pie shop is rustic, humble and serves a simple selection of good ole pies! Theres only a few select flavors but I have come through here twice in a week and made a point of stopping here now. Their take on a sweet plum pie was delicious!!
P.Amazing!! WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND PIES TO VACCINATED AND UNVACCINATED. Not one pie i have had from this place has ever discriminated against me, the nicest pies ever 😭
M.I've never been here before but this place stands for freedom so I'll go out of my way to get a pie. Also these fake 1 star reviews written by woke losers is seriously cringe. Go back to your covid echo chambers talking about how excited you are to get your 12th booster shot.
S.Outstanding, original and delicious pies, simply the best I've tasted. The customer service is as good as the pies. The ingredients are generous, well balanced flavour per the name, and if it says it has beef, it has beef. I'll stop by every time I am in Kumeu. Thank you The Pie Shop.
R.I had heard about The Pie Shop from a colleague from work and it is along a popular motorcycle route so finally stopped at it. Had The Master (steak and cheese). Solid crust , not as flaky as I like a pie crust but it was a good crust. The filling was good quality steak and the gravy nicely peppered. The best part was the cheese. Enough of it to be stringy!
N.The pies are great and well worth the price, unique flavours for upper class pies. Just needs more of a selection, also the pies me and my friends brought all kind of emptied their contents into our take away bags, or the pie degraded before we started to eat. For sure a place to eat in.
I honestly recommend to make the pastry thicker, or the contents of the pies not as liquidy.

THIS next comment is more a reflection on NZ, a Portuguese Custard Tart is $4.50 at the pie shop but approx 90 cents NZ in Portugal. Apparently houses are not the only expensive thing in NZ.
M.Steak n Cheese is off the hook. Chunky tender meat. Cheese was not too overpowering. Pastry nice and fluffy. Washed down with can of L & P. Summarised in 2 words. Pie Heaven 👌🏽👏🏽

S.Selection was very limited and they sold out on the steak & cheese and the Portugal custard pies that I wanted. Travel all the way from Papakura to get average pies. The pies were a little bigger than the normal size but cost $10 each. Look like I have to come out of retirement as a baker and open a pie shop.

M.Just a stunningly good pie. Personally I don't have any issues whatsoever paying $9 for a pie that good. Also if you ever think that's expensive I can think of a dozen other $9 grab n go things that are not even close to this tasty and FILLING.

V.Yummy pies.Pies are large and really require a knife and fork to eat comfortably and to help enjoy it more. We ate inn. The bottom fell out of mine so was messy. They do have plastic forks only.
H.I'm a fan of this store. The pies seem expensive at first sight but the quality ingredients make them very filling and enjoyable to eat. The coffee here is really good and the staff are exceptionally good and remember your coffee order if you're a regular. Definitely 10 out of 10 from me

Pastry is excellent, its not fatty or oily but nice and crisp and not flakey. I had the ground beef pie and yes, really meat inside. The cheese used is not that fake, plastic stuff but rather a quality cheese and it really shows. For those who don't usually enjoy pies, the price may scare you but if you've tried pies for over the country, they are well worth the price and are some of the best tasting you'll find.

M.Been driving past this place for months now and decided to drop in towards closing time to see what was still left. Two pies, Mince and Cheese and a Black Doris Plum. I don't like mince and cheese but I was hungry and decided to give it a go. Converted... Best damn pies I have ever had. Good quality ingredients, great size and best of all tasty. Not your run of the mill commercially prepared pies that are cookie cutter perfect but handmade with love type of pies. Will definitely be recommending this place to all my friends and family.

r.If you find yourself in Kumeu be sure to stop at the Pie Shop. My husband is a huge pie fan and loves the steak and cheese pie from here, I am not a pie fan.... that was until I discovered the Chicken, lemon, cheese pie from the pie shop.....delicious!! This place leaves you craving pies in the future.
B.Yeah they make nice pies, I don't think they are worth $7.50 though. The steak pie isn't really a eat on the run sort of pie either. Filling spilled out, not any bigger than other gourmet pies, just needed a plate and cutlery. There are a couple of other gourmet pie options in the area that offer better value.
S.We always go to the Pie Shop when we get back from surfing at Muriwai. It’s very convenient.We love the pies and the desserts (Sweetheart and Homestead), they are really fresh and tasty. The customer service is great as well! Best pie in Auckland area!
L.These have to be the best pies I have eaten in a decade. The coffee was hot and there was friendly service. I like how you can watch the pies being made on the premises. The salad was reasonably priced and had good content but was just a bit too saturated with creamy dressing for my liking.
S.Absolutely hands down best pies I’ve had in my life. They’re a generous size pie that has pastry styling similar to how my mum made her big chicken pies. In other words they’re old school hand made pies. I’m vegetarian and had both the veg and vegan. If you’re a vego who loves pies and loves a good hearty pie then make The Pie Shop in Kumeo a part of your road trip. I’m from Melbourne ... foodie capital of the world with great bakery’s and pies but I’ve never come across a pie like these ones. So much so I want to invest in their expansion into Melbourne just so I can have them more regularly!

A.Very different Pie Outlet in Kumeu. No effort or expense has been put into shop decor, everything is bare bones and minimal. Seating is booth style and would seat about 20 maximum. Staff of 4-5 are busy in all areas and pies are seen being made before your eyes on a table. Selection is very basic with only about 8 options on offer, pricing starts at $8.00.
Cutlery is all disposable paper plates and plastic knives and forks.
Drinks fridge is not apparent initially but can be seen low on the floor behind the counter, coffee available also. Never saw any restrooms. Product was good (I had a Commander pie, my mate had a chicken pie). Staff are very young and fairly busy. Parking outside.
J.The pies are pretty pricey, but they are worth every damn cent. Absolutely astonishing taste and texture. The cafe is first class and delicious too.

s.Dropped in today after someone raved about it to me yesterday. I was not disappointed. Had a ' Master' steak and cheese pie to dine in. The steak was tender with yummy gravy and melted cheese. Ended up buying 2 extras to take away. It's $8 per pie but I feel it was worth it.
N.This place puts all other pie places to shame. Upon my first visit I had two pies and a dessert pie. The only downside is that it's literally the opposite end of Auckland to where I live.
If I could give more stats. I would. The pie shop deserves it.

W.I noticed your shop as I was driving through Kumeu today 01/10/18 and knew I would be stopping in on my way back through. I knew it would be a bit more cost than a standard run of the mill bakery but was willing to part with a little extra $.
A cake and pastry cook by trade I was so glad I walked in. On entry I was greeted by friendly staff and looking in the pie warmer was immediately impressed by the size and appearance of your pies.
Great taste and I thought great value. Thank you for your efforts. Will be back to try another with my wife. Big big thumbs up.

M.Nothing short of 5 stars. The fact you can see the pies being made gets a star itself. Nowhere else can I see my pie being made like that, so I know what has gone into it. The aroma gets you started, the decor fits a pie shop (if you will sit then still eat out of the bag, it's a pie not a lasagne).
Best pie in years. Mince and cheese yummy and crispy. Plum pie - better than the book itself.

A.The pies are very good, we had the steak and cheese, the chicken one and also the sweet apple one. They were each excellent, the only drawbsck is they are fairly pricey, however for an occasional treat this is a great place.
G.The Pie Shop is well worth stopping at to sample their delicious offerings. The Italian lemon, parmesan and chicken pie is incredibly good and makes for a nice change from your standard chicken pie.
The customer service is great as well, so I’ll definitely be stopping by again.

When my comrade had to step out to take a critical phonecall for an extended "few+" minutes, Angus & Pal added some great convo incl. moments of pure entertainment WHILE the minutes ticked past closing time AND they happily cleaned up the kitchen for the night.
I was even given a book to read - probably 100yr old lit. review?? fascinating.

E.Had the commander & master pies. They taste almost the same. Is not too salty and had distinct flavour of black pepper. I think there can be further improvements to add more natural flavours to it. However, it does have a queue on Saturday lunch time as it seems popular with locals. For comparison, the best pie shop in Tauranga selling their pies cheaper than this (I personally find the flavor better there). The coffee is ok, lack wow factor on first sip. However, the staff are friendly, thoughtful and helpful too.
