Nice large open spaced Cafe with seating inside and out. Friendly fast service. I liked the vegetarian sandwich except for the balance of filling to bread, the slices were very thick. I didn't have any luck with the custard square. I found the pastry not crisp and the custard a very mild flavor. I'll try something else next time.

Been going here a while, decided to try their beef burger and it was fantastic. This place never fails to impress. They have friendly staff, quick service, pleasant atmosphere, and simple cafe fare consistently well made.

Had a delicious gluten free panini with tender chicken and served with a salad. There were other delicious gluten free options too.

Excellent food. I didn’t get a lot of cheese in my steak and cheese which was disappointing, and it was quite expensive. However, it was a really good pie so can’t companion.

As always, a great selection of food, tasty and filling. The service is lovely with the ladies being polite and welcoming. The place is relaxing and not crowded. A good example of the great food and service that Hawkes Bay prides itself on. Well done to all the staff.

A really great breakfast special. Bacon and eggs on toast with two hash browns. $11.50. Choice of fried, poached or scrambled eggs. I chose fried. The serving size was just right for me.

Cheap and cheerful. Don't expect an amazing venue or anything, but the food quality is consistent and fairly priced. I did see the owner (pretty sure it's her, anyway) putting food into the hot cabinet with her hands recently though, which was rank.

Excellent food and coffee, but the unique juice blends will make us come back again.

We are from Auckland and bought few cold drinks. On that day is very hot weather, around 31C ! While we went out for business, leaving my mum inside the cafe (because she is not well of the long distance traveling in car). Lucky the staffs are very nice and didn't ask my mum go out. Very good service and kind staffs!

I really want to give John's Bakery a 3.5 star, but the system only allows for "whole numbers". The food there is quite tasty and moderately-priced, which means not cheap, not expensive. The staff I encountered were passably friendly, but not what I would call warm or engaging. A big plus is that they have their own toilets which, if small, are quite clean and serviceable (however the air vent in the toilet I used had clearly never been cleaned, judging by the large amount of dust hanging precariously from it). The cup of tea was OK but not hot enough, a common problem in a number of NZ eateries - better for it to be piping hot and let the customer deal with it than have it barely hot. Visually, the décor is OK, but the choice of music I encountered very much targeted to those under 35. That's fine I suppose, but at the time of day my mother and I visited there it's more likely that those over 50 will be there, so note to management: music should be appropriate to the majority of the clientèle, and at a volume that doesn't hamper conversation. Better yet, either have no music or just "ambiance" music that is generic. I mean, people don't go to a bakery / eatery for the music, right? I'm no stick in the mud, but I found the music sufficiently intrusive and annoying to be distracting, the result of which is the loss of a whole rating star for John's Bakery. Finally, cleanliness. Overall it's good, but more attention needs to be paid to the "nooks and crannies". Such things are often noticed subconsciously. I came away with the impression of things being just a bit grubby and unkempt, even though overall the shop appears clean and tidy at a quick glance. I will go back there, but I must say that the shop's reputation, for me, has been tarnished. I expect a place like John's Bakery, which is well-known in the area, to have a more stand-out experience, not the mediocre one I encountered.

Not as good as it used to be. They claim that they bake their own products fresh. But it tastes like it was processed in a factory somewhere. The pie filling was black instead of meat-coloured. Disappointing!

22 Mar 2020 - Today we visited again and ordered brunch with Bagal buns, but received it with English muffins. when I ask, the Chef said its John's Recipe and thats our bagal bun. :( may be...., He is correct..... but first time I see and tasted that kind of 'BAGAL bread'

(Translated) I had imagined differently. Breakfast offer only standard and inflexible. Would have liked to eat hearty and sweet, but you can only choose what is on the menu. What a shame, it can be done better! (Original) Hatte ich mir anders vorgestellt. Breakfast Angebot nur Standard und unflexibel. Hätte gerne deftig und süß gegessen, aber du kannst nur das wählen was auf dem Menu angeboten wird. Schade, das geht besser!
