I relocated from Wellington to Auckland using a cargo van and Scotties was by far the most economical hire company to go with - the only one I've seen that offers 150km free per day.
The cargo van was in great condition and drove well. Stress-free and hassle free hire all around!
I will definitely hire from Scotties Rentals again, whether that's for a van, truck or a car. Highly recommend A++++

When we first called him in a bind having been let down by another company, he’d already shut up shop for the day and was halfway home but he came back, opened the office and his systems and had us up and running in no time and at a fair price.

J.I had booked online Toyota Rav 7 days and got an amazing savings. Scotties Rentals communication via email and mobile leading up to my arrival to Queenstown was on point. They recommended I did online check in which was an easy process and quick and fast hand over.
The vehicle was good only negative the back right wheel was making whining noises when driving but did the job. Amy and Annie were very efficient and made the hand over and return effortless. I will be returning in near future and as long as the deals are good I will rent another vehicle through Scotties again.

C.Scotties communication prior to rental was excellent. We hired the car during a difficult period of the Covid pandemic. Scotties went out of their way to help us with luggage storage while on a bike tour and their contactless pick up and drop off worked like clockwork giving us easy access to airport. M.Booking a car with Scotties was cheap and easy. I recommend the Queenstown office that I used. Cristian was helpful and the customer service was good.
The only thing to improve would probably be making so that every single office has got their own phone number as well as the central branch's one in AKL. That way it would probably be easier to contact the regional office directly :-)

T.We rented a Van in Auckland and returned it in Queenstown almost 3 weeks later. Yes it took a trip on the interisland ferry. A great trip of a beautiful country. Do it by car and take the time to see all of the sites. Picked up at the airport in North Island. Dropped at the exit airport what could be better.

E.Booked a car with a friend - reservation was easy and pick up from the airport was great (approx 5 minute drive from Auckland Airport). Got the car as promised (a later model Toyota Corolla), however a few things needed replacing... tyres and windscreen wiper blades. Overall we were happy and would use again. Car had a few bumps and scratches but still fine.
Z.The owner was pretty cool. Helped us find a trailer hitch that fit the same size as our trailer. Was accommodating regarding pick up and drop off time. Really reasonable price. The car was good mechanically but had a few superficial things worn out, but we also had asked for the cheapest car he had so there's no real complaint there. Pretty good experience, nice guy, nice business.

D.I got a great price for a monthly rental and I was not expecting a "nice" car. The car itself definitely had a few scratches, dents, 220k+ KMs, but was clean and perfectly reliable which was all I needed!! Service was great from the Scotties team.

Our car was a hybrid so it was very economical with fuel. Cars are collected from the company with quarter tank of fuel & are to be returned with the same amount of fuel. I did find it tricky to gauge fuel usage so the next person to hire our car got half a tank of fuel free - lucky them!
It was not a perfect looking vehicle with scratches here & there and cobwebs on the exterior mirrors but it was a good deal cheaper than other rental companies and didn't affect car performance!
I would definitely hire from them again.

D.For the price, Scottie's was a good move at about half the cost of on-airport services, which over a long trip can add up. For the price, it's a good value, and worth the extra hassle. To Scottie's credit, my experience was super honest and straightforward: no hard sells for add-on insurance, no bogus damage claims for pre-existing damage (which Enterprise has tried to do to me before), an easy return trip to the airport, and they even remind you to pay any traffic tolls or tickets so they don't have to charge you admin costs - whereas Enterprise loves to tack on bogus admin fees to those. They even encourage you to take your own photos when getting the car. So good on Scottie's for running an honest operation.
However, it's not perfect. It took about an hour for us to get from the airport to Scottie's as no one was answering the phone on repeated attempts. Also, we booked through Economy rent-a-car, not through Scottie's directly, and were not given the freephone number Scotties - but got it from the airport help desk (and, to be honest, didn't even know we had a car at Scottie's, thinking it was instead Economy!). When we did get through though, they sent the van quickly and it was mostly an easy transfer. The van could use a magnetic slap-on sign (or even a piece of paper on the dash) though, as right now there is no insignia on it so you don't know which van is Scottie's. Check-out will also be longer than the on-airport lots assuming you're a rewards member with any of them. The car you'll get is older with more miles (we had 130k on ours) and probably some damage, but also had some premium options like a wood and leather steering wheel which you'd never see on-airport.
Returning the car was super simple and easy. I'd use Scottie's again.

D.Edited this review: originally had some misfortune when the quote and the payment for booking were not matching - meaning I paid approx $100NZD more than quoted.
I attempted to sort it out at the Auckland City depot but the manager was rude and dismissive.
Fast forward a few months later, Annie the owner of the business phoned me to follow up on the feedback and much to my surprise, Annie looked into the issue and found I was correct and refunded the difference. I thought her integrity was worthy of an edit of the review.
Long story short, if you think you're getting ripped off, reach out to the owner instead who is much more rational.
C.I rented a Toyota Tarago type vehicle for about a month through Scotties - it was about $2k cheaper than any of the major car hire companies. We arrived into Auckland late at night and I grabbed an $8 uber to their offices where the car was waiting. The vehicle was great, not brand new but we didn't need that. Took us reliably round the North island with no dramas.
I returned the car outside office hours and managed to take the keys with me back to Australia by accident... Despite the fact that they didn't have a spare set in Auckland and it took a while for me to get them back to them via post over the holiday break they didn't make a fuss.
If you're looking for a reliable, easy rental I would 10/10 recommend the guys at Scotties.

C.The service is very good and it is easy to pick up the car and return. Condition of car is also nice, although not very new.
P.They're a little company, and were a bit delayed picking us up from the airport. But overall the car (Nissan Tiida) was pretty reliable through most of the south and north islands (hills and mountains abound). Affordable rate and unlimited mileage was great.

Still a car rental company. They have many policies in place to protect them, which is totally understandable.
Location isn't the best. They send a shuttle to the airport to bring you to their office which is tucked away behind some large industrial warehouses.

T.I'll pay a little more elsewhere to not drive a 13 year old car. When I arrived the staff were complaining about existing customers. The car had about 4/7 worth of petrol when handed to me. But, it was very cheap.
